I'm a total extreme performance enthusiast with quite the experience of system modifications and development assistance. Delivered some great results though I say myself, I'm just super needy so I never stop looking for improvements.
One of the goodies I can offer is total AD free environment, wether it's in the apps like YouTube and all the countless apps exploding with annoying ADs or browsing the internet, even removing leftovers from where the ADs where placed making the websites much cleaner.
Modified YouTube app with background playback with the screen turned off supporting full media control trough headphones, amongst several custom settings.
Fantastic app that offers fast stream of almost every movie or show available in high definition. You can also get subtitles with most of them and the best part, you can download everything with either the system downloader or your own download manager which I can also include that is the very best out there, even quite better than the ADM.
Then there's the most advanced YouTube downloader. Download any video in any resolution, codec or fps and even metadata like subtitles. Then you can download any music video in audio only, choosing from any codec and metadata offering high quality cover art using the max res thumbnail, title, artist and other info.
Then there's the king of audio enhancement, ViperFX, taking your audio experience to a whole new level.
Xposed and so so many enhancements, modifications and customizations to your liking.
I can also theme the whole system in a gorgeous pure black AMOLED style, including most of the apps like YouTube, Instagram and so on.
Is this a story or a release?
cool story bro
Kinda neither, I'll take requests gladly if anyone would like my help about related stuff.
Interested on the AD free environment, and ViperFX. I've tried ad away, is it something else you've got besides ad away?

AdGuard is my favorite if configured correctly. Only blocker I know of that can block all ADs in browsers and apps. Also removes leftover space from ADs. Free version blocks only browser traffic which is enough for me because most of my apps are AD free or I disabled them. For YouTube you need the vanced mod that you can get with Magisk. Also the ViperFX.
I can provide all the necessary direct download files if you want.
Then there's also two sites that I like that provide paid apps for free but though encourage to support devs instead of you truly appreciate their work.

Thanks 4 the info. I've already got YT vanced and viperFX from Magisk. If you'd be so kind of providing me with AdGuard file, that'd be great. :good:

Here you go. Recommend enabling HTTPS filtering, high quality mode filtering, DNS, and for the filters: add the social, experimental, annoyance, simplified domain, anti-adblock killer.
Then just update the filters and activate.
The useful and content related unblock filter might also be useful if some sites show an adblock warning. Less likely to happen.

I always give more priority to battery endurance than to the performance. I prefer slower phone but lasting some days
You cant use a high performance phone with no battery
Pretty much everything listed here is the same mods every one of us with root are already running ????.

Currently our current doctrine is to be app obsessed, and to admit it, i am too BUT the more apps = less space, higher battery consumption, more FC, more browsing time, slower app market startup times, higher cpu strain and my personal favourite opening the process manager and clicking "kill all"
I suggest something different, Not new, many of you may already know this but still take some time to try it. web apps.
I found that by removing apps and using their mobile web app via the browser to be far more effective and efficient, as the browser is powerful, stable and is an amazingly easy program on that gorgeous 4inch screen. and i suplement the ease of access by putting these web apps on my desktop via the bookmark shortcut
Some examples
Google reader, (via igoogle)
Google mail g-cal and g-maps via igoogle (almost pointless as you cant really remove the pre installed apps , maybe with root)
ebuddy via their website, (only problem is background multi tasking)
i removed the xda app (gasp) in favour for just a shortcut link
google weather
i removed wiki droid and just used the website
i have noticed an increase in performance and my battery too but ill hold that verdict for about another week, but it helps as you actively close a browser window wen ur finished with it without leaving it running in the B/G
post some ideas and alternates you have found.
Its a fine balance...

Well.. I would agree with you about the app obsessed part, when users tend to download all sorts of applications sometime multiple apps for the same purpose. I believe in the "Zen" philosophy (a la Zenwalk Linux), which basically means that you use a single *good* application for a single purpose, sometime select the more featured one which lets say lets you perform multiple features instead of just one... ASTRO file manager is a good example.
For the web part, I have mixed feelings... for example I tried several apps for reading my feeds on google reader, but ultimately realized that the best one was to use the web browser.
However, technically speaking an application (a well written one) should be more efficient than its web counterpart. Take for example Google Maps. Running things in a web browser is essentially adding another layer between you and your app isnt it? Plus, I really doubt that the web interface is expressive enough to allow for all kinds of application areas... background apps is one example.
So... I'm on the side of applications, although one has to take care to properly select them and avoid filling up your phone with crap. So far haven't had to use any task killers etc as I think Android manages that for you.

Good argument, brilliantly written, and i do agree with you But look above you mentioned "well written apps" wel thats the big disadvantage of android, mass incompatibility, the amount if half assed apps ive installed is phenominal, even more surprising is that badly written apps are so common, its not unique to find the abbrevieation "FC" in the comments section of many apps due to the amount of time force closing occurs.
what im stressing is that the browser is strong, its stable, its sexc, complete that sometimes people shouldnt waste time or money on apps but to use a simple bookmark, THAT said there are plenty of apps that are brilliant and stable or dont have a browser alternative (games for instance)
YES astro is amazing, BUT and i hate to crAPPLE quote but there was a hack for the iphone where you could use the browser as a file manager / fttp/ssh/ bluetooth client etc so that would be cool to see on android.
I don't know if this belongs here or is even allowed but:
Is there a way to block advertisements in wp7 yet?
Full registry access?
Windows folder file access?
I have both but I can't find it, and I hope somebody out there is working on this =)

You could just disconnect wifi/data.
But it's not going to do you any good because there will still be an empty box on your screen. So you really haven't accomplished much except perhaps cut some of us devs out of our much earned pennies.

As for blocking ads on web sites (in Internet Explorer), unless you have a developer unlocked phone I don't think there is any way (and there may not be a way even in that case). You will not find any ad blocking software in the marketplace.
is this true, and that there is no way to block ads while browsing the web ?
Thats what im trying to find out,
I think what he/she is getting at is blocking ads in IE which is not possible as of yet. As far as blocking ads in apps just kill the wifi and data connection and no more intrusive ugly ads ruining the experience.

There are a few ways to do it; easiest and legal way for WP7 users is to use ad-filtering http-proxy server, or use custom, your own ad filtering DNS server.
Sorry I can't provide you easy "how-to" way but you have enough information for google now
You might also be able to do HOSTS-based blocking. That requires interop-unlock though; the HOSTS "file" on WP7 is in the registry.
What are the common URLs used for app adverts ?
I have DD-WRT router which allows URL filtering, I've blocked common google ads and admob and its fixed it for my Android, but still getting WP7 ads

Guys, I propose to close this thread and/or move your conversation to PM. XDA is well-known resource, but XDA visitors are not a developers or enthusiasts only. A lot of people are visiting XDA in hope to "get something for free". Ad-supported apps is (probably) very important trend in software business, for the free software future. Let's do not ruin that future.
So this topic is very close to break XDA anti-wares rule. Please discuss it privately and (if you'll find the way) don't share your experience to general public!
Blocking Ads on IE is one thing but, on apps, should be placed as bad as warez.
Devs offer their apps for free to make money off the Ads, if you are trying to block all the ads from the apps, you might as well pirate the app because it's the same thing. Ask the Dev to make a $$ ad free version or stop looking for this.
Mods, I agree, this thread should be closed before it gets worse.

David, unfortunately both methods (for IE and apps) are working same way. So the only way to legally get ads-free browsing is a custom third party browsers (I believe there are lot of 'em on the MP). So better to close this thread.

I hate Ads as much as the next person but, when a good app is free, I feel I should display their ads because it's how they make their money (I'll touch one or 2 time to time if it's a really good app)

Firefox Aurora, which will be Firefox 12, has a whole bunch of new permissions. Do you want your browser to take pictures, discover known accounts, administer accounts, etc.? Me, I just want it to render HTML while leaking as little info as possible. So, if you're concerned about privacy and security, heads-up.
This is too bad, because other than the spyware permissions, it's a big improvement over previous non-ndk Fennec, meaning actually usable.
i noticed the camera ..ect prior to installing went and checked official and beta its the same thing
not new
and the whole account ect. this has to do with new firefox sync app that comes with Aurora
so you can set up an account to sync your desktop browser to your phone

There are no "spyware permissions".
Permissions are just FYI, they're not telling you that an app is a spyware or not. I know sometimes it's hard to figure out why an app includes certain permissions, as a developer i can tell you that most of the times i have to add a permission in order to include code which is so poorly related to the scary permission's description.
Atm I'm having trouble with a user's review, it argued my app was malware just because new permissions were added.
In my opinion firefox products are safe and i'm using Aurora at the moment.
With this i'm not saying "go and install all the worst stuff you can find", paying attention to privacy and security is obviously a good thing... unless it turns into "android-specific-permissions-fobia", sure, because the other systems (PC, Mac, Linux, iOs, whatever) don't have user permissions so you just install a new app and stay happy.
There are a lot of apps that will request things like "read phone state and identity" that have no plausible reason for doing so except tracking/spying. Many run fine with it disabled.
I don't want to keep my bookmarks in the cloud, so the Aurora perms are just a privacy/security risk for me. Note that if a browser process is hijacked by malware, the malware will presumably inherit the permissions, making the trustworthiness of Mozilla moot.
If Aurora only needed the permissions when attempting to set up sync,
that would be tolerable for me, but it crashes on startup without them.
i set up one time sync to transfer bookmarks
then went to sync under the setting witch brings me to my OS account/sync menu
and disabled from attempting sync it still working fine for me
you can also delete the sync account also and still works fine
sync is not integrated into the browser for some reason maybe because it still alpha
but its integrated into official and beta browser and don't have these permission you're worrying over nothing
Actually Aurora got Sync back a few nightlies ago: now you have an icon in Programs and it's in Settings - Account too. Sync is the main reason I use FF on Android, it's brilliant!
I'm sure a lot of people are not concerned with security, data-harvesting, etc. I am, and some other folks must be also or CM wouldn't have added permissions management. A lot of things work fine with half their permissions disabled (Firefox being one). Others don't. Audible, for example, just won't run without "read phone state." I guess Amazon really wants that IMEI #.
Maybe they will patch Aurora so it will run without accounts access unless you try to set up sync.
Google's whole business model is based on data-harvesting. The ICS stock Music Player won't even work at all until you sign in.
Not everyone wants to be monetized in exchange for convenience.
Mozilla is trustworthy enough, they are a non-profit open source company that has been around for years, I'm sure they have a legit reason for the permissions.
Solution = who uses firwdox anyway?.. Boat browser!
Sent from your bedroom with my GT-I9100
Boat is what I mostly use. It wants a lot of permissions but runs just fine with them disabled. I was using Aurora as much as possible until I discovered the permissions.
Boat also stores bookmarks locally, and can save/restore from sdcard, just what I want. No shipping them off to Google or wherever they go for me, thanks.
Why would anyone use Firefox anyways?
It's slower than the default browser and it STILL doesn't support FLASH!
Odd how suddenly permissions became an issue when android decided to tell you what permissions are requested, yet before when you had your nokia/htc/motorola running other OS's, you would install any crap and not worry about it. What is the developer gonna do? Hack naked pics of your gf from your phone? Phone your friends and prank them? Show your mom you browsing dodgy pornsites from her pretty new android phone? Seriously now, everyone is making such a huge fuss about this its bordering on conspiracy paranoia
I put this posting up as a heads-up for my fellow paranoids, people who actually think about who might get their credit/phone/ssn/email etc., not for the benefit or convenience of app writers. It's like the whining from Swype about how they really needed accurate imeis or whatever so they could count unique installs. And dear Google wants everything they can get, now in one convenient location, so and only so they can serve you the right ads, and you can trust that they will never decide to more directly realize the huge shareholder value locked up there, and that they will never be cracked.
Privacy and security are like a gun: you don't need them until you *really* need them.

I understand your point of view, what i can't understand is why some people scream "beware spyware!" while they actually have no proofs at all.
permission + permission = spyware, it's a weird math which tends to damage developers and the whole android's world.

Scared your mom/wife/girlfriend sees an add for fleshlight while playing angry birds? Seriously this is a joke, 99% of developers dont give a rats ass about your bank account, email, pvt sexts. All we want is to deliver an application that would benefit the the community, and warnings like these would be the reason ppl move to other platforms because it spreads the idea that Android is an unsecure platform. So what if it logs which sites you visit? Firefox is one of the software applications that brought OSS software into the mainstream. It has been long established as more secure than IE. If it wasnt for software like this, we would not have had an open platform for our devices, making them much more affordable

+1 both Firefox and this Aurora are horrible browsers. Firefox team needs to get their **** together. Opera is just SO MUCH better. fast, easy, pretty much all options, hardware acc., flash, , and not once it slowed down or crashed on me.
firefox is supporting HTML5 (without h.264 because of licence) and flash is just added, it's still buggy because of AURORA. Aurora is very buggy as you noticed, lets think why? Oh, yes, it's just an alpha relase not even beta. I'm usin firefox beta in my mba 11" and old school 19" pc and both uses sync (which is amazing) I'm also giving feedback all the time with reports, logs and surveys. In mobile I was using dolphin but I can see posibilities.
Firefox is coming with steady steps. Everyone knows ff, and also chrome. Chrome just relased v.17 for pcs and macs. but still no mobile (except ICS beta) (also chrome is a google product and gathers your datas so many times more than firefox) I want to say people could remember time gaps between 3.5 and 3.6 and 4.0 of firefox and you see, now they are relasing new versions on few months which is very good (because now you don't need to wait new features for 5 months or you don't need to install minefield etc.)
About permissions, yes new permissions could be dangerous but hey, these permissions for give you something new like sync, flash plugin or new features. Mozilla is trustworhty and helpful. They are bringing Free Internet Space for years and you can't say they are spying us. there is versions for qr droid, with/without some permissions, maybe firefox can do samething for paranoids.
Also yes I'm supporting and defending firefox but no, I'm not a fanboy, at least I'm still using dolphin for manything and also safari.

I use "spyware permissions" in a pretty loose sense of "permissions which are not clearly essential to the core functionality of the app". I agree that Mozilla is trustworthy, moreso because you can read the source. But the browser is the most internet-facing and thus most dangerous app, most likely to be cracked, most likely to have access to lots of personal info, so needs to receive the closest privacy /security scrutiny.
Unlike the Facebook crowd, I look at my info as my property, and ask not why I should not share my info with the world at large, but why should I, what benefit do I receive in exchange for giving away what someone else can monetize (the whole Facebook/Google business model) and which may do me real harm if for example app writers Ivan Ivanovich and his friend Bala Babangida turn out to be not such nice guys, and use my info to send me spam texts or clean out my bank account.
Case in point: Google+ app just added "record audio", but the app doesn't have any audio capability, you can't record and post a sound. I remembered that some years back Google wanted to be able to record audio on laptops, "purely for analytical purposes". That didn't fly back then. I uninstalled Google+.

Best you can do is contact the developers and ask them about the permissions included. If Ivan Ivanovich & Bala Babangida say their notepad is not able to work without your bank account then ok, let's warn all the other people.
Probably you won't have any reply from google but most of the developers (or app writers, as you prefer) are just glad to answer via email since they're not allowed to reply in the android market.
Instead, the actual scenario is more and more devs who get their clean apps targeted as malware and users who get paranoid by reading too many reckless comments.
In general, devs are not wolfs and users are not sheeps... otherwise there were no open sources (eg Mozilla), no android, no xda-developers!

Hi matgras,
Thanks for the suggestion.
I will add the light theme to the todo list.
The images are by design not meant to be displayed. Lynx browser is designed to be frugal on the amount of data downloaded from the web.
That said, I do recognized the need to give the users more choices, so it is possible that the rule may be relaxed in a future release, perhaps by allowing the user to opt for image download when they are on wifi.

Some of you have enquired about an ads-free version of the app and this is definitely on the cards.
Quick survey:
How much would you be willing to pay for the app?
(I definitely would not want to over-price the app out of the market, but at the same time it has to be at a fair amount to compensate for loss of future ads earnings)

hello everyone,
I am still learning about programming stuff but I use android daily and there are my favourite apps which get worse after every update like UC Browser. This is the best app I've ever had to make use of. The most functional browser and also very convenient, but the way it gets annoying after every update is why I post this question today. I want to remove some features of an application and make it run like nothing happened. UC browser has just way too many ads like:
1- One the top of homepage of the browser
2- Adding sponsored speed dials automatically
3- Notifications about the news
4- Banner pops up anytime when using any application and UC running in the background
5- A whole scrolling feed of news and sponsored content on the home page of the browser
6- Automatically enables its own lock screen saver function
7- Adds widget or floating bubble/icon on its own which is rip off of iOS control centre
8- Asks for too many permissions which it does not even have features of or not required by a browser
Now many of you will say that they can all be disabled or just go with it if you want to use it so bad or suggest alternatives but UC browser is really good if we remove all the things mentioned above and I ask for help on removing these features manually from the apk resource itself.
I've heard about deconstructing apk and editing it but I need some proper instructions from someone to work on this or let someone else do it. If we can achieve this we might be able to remove annoyance from really nice applications like UC browser which will be beautiful and neat.
Thank You

hello everyone,
I am still learning about programming stuff but I use android daily and there are my favourite apps which get worse after every update like UC Browser.

Go here and find an older version, they have older versions of all kinds of apps.

Other than that, you're on your own. We are all volunteers here in our free time, no one has the kind of time to help you learn your way through this, you'll have to research and learn how to do it yourself. If it means that much to you then you'll do what it takes, if you aren't willing then it doesn't really matter to you to begin with.

If you're rooted, just install an ad filtering app
To decompile an app is very tough, if you are not used to it, forget

Ad blockers don't really help very much with ads that run in-app in my experience. Ad blockers are more effective when browsing the web via the various mobile browsers.

Thank you for the reply. it really means a lot to me to actually get rid of all the annoyance from that app which does not even offer a cleaner one which can be bought separately and it would be great if you could recommend me from where to start because this is what i came here for in the first place :].

You can use APKTool to decompile the app then modify it. Where and what you need to edit is something you'll have to figure out. After editing to suit your purposes, re-sign and re-compile the apk then use the app.
I would recommend using an older version of the app from APK mirror that wasn't such a pain. Then add the newer features from the current version that want to keep if you are going to go through the trouble of modifying an app, it may be easier this way instead of trying to remove things from the newer version.
