ads suddenly popping up - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

I've installed an unofficial fork of aosp extended rom . I have not installed any new apps aside from what I had previously: Reddit, Instagram, etc. I started getting these over the air ads and I have no idea how to get rid of them. I've tried adaway, Adblock plus, dns66, etc. They randomly pop up while I'm texting or browsing and it's annoying as hell.

Rogue app or rogue rom or it's part of an April fool's meme similar to lineage os

No AOSP yet?

Kinda disappointed there's no Pixel love, any devs out there looking to make an AOSP ROM?
Honestly, is there even much reason to when stock is so good?

The reason is simple. No carrier Bloat!!!
I'm sure it will come with time.. I'm just putting it out there ? no disrespect meant in anyway.

If you put an active Verizon sim in any pixel it will install like 3 apps. No big deal at all they can all be uninstalled but for some reason people think it's a huge deal lol

The Verizon apps are always there just deactivated. Verizon sim just lets the apps show up in your app drawer. Also the Verizon apps are always running in the background. Don't know why; I don't even have a Verizon sim in my phone but there they are.

Where are these apps?
Edit: there are no hidden disabled apps at all. They do not come installed on the phone. They get installed during setup if you have a Verizon sim card in and sign into a good account in the setup. I've had two pixels and done at least 10 factory resets and flashed full factory images. I've never had one of those apps get installed

hi,
technically, u can build a working aosp 7.1.1 Rom for the pixel now, but its still a bit rough around the edges... I've already done it a couple of times. it comes with a few caveats though, by default its setup to use google's prebuilt kernel in the build, opengapps wont install without patching aosp and the build.prop in /vendor needs to be adjusted to match the fingerprint in /system to avoid an error on boot... all of these things are trivially fixable, but pixel on aosp isn't ready for primetime yet, Imho...
the stock Rom is much much better... I think until cyanogenmod and other Roms get working builds out, idk there's any compelling reason to switch to aosp....
lastly, idk aosp builds would be as fast ot optimized, im not sure how google's internal toolchain differs; are they using sdclang? are there optimizations in art, bionics, etc that haven't hit aosp yet? etc, etc
I too am keeping an eye on the custom ROM scene. I've always preferred the "lack" of carrier bloat, etc. Being a tester for some time has taught me much. Since the demise of my last device I am forced to take a break.

I've been using substratum but just for theming the navbar on stock/pixel rom.... Obviously, if you try to theme systemui you will get a bootloop though (as expected. lol)... On top of that, I did also play with theming individual apps, mainly phone and google play which both worked, with the particular theme that I was using...
Theming would be nice on stock, it's too bad that google ripped out the dark theme that was in the N previews, I would have been happy with that, myself.
I think I'm most looking forward to the extra features that get baked into custom AOSP Roms and the full substratum support. I'm not a big fan CyanogenMod, but I do try them out from time to time. Always seem to go back to AOSP tho.
I am using substratum to theme everything but system UI. All individual apps, settings etc.

ya, I've contributed some patches to CM - but since getting the Pixel, I'm fairly happy with Stock. There are only a few features that I miss in CM that aren't available on the Pixel and even when I was using CM on my s5 - I always had to rip out a number of CM's features; all of the CMstats (analytics stuff), a number of their apps + adding my own keys since it is insecure (and arguably quite silly) to be using public known keys on ROMs (although, afaict - many third-party roms tend to do that.).
I'm thinking about rolling my own AOSP for Pixel -> pulling in only the features that I want, most of which I have patches for and only a few bits would need to be tracked down that I don't have. not hard to find though... Now that TWRP (RC1) can actually restore backups I can start actually looking at playing with AOSP without losing my stock rom that is already setup.

Xposed for 6.0

I'm rooted on stock with twrp, wanted to install some tweaks for the reboot menu and status bar and I know we need xposed for it.
Can anyone guide me as to how to install it? I've read tutorials but wanted to ask the people here. I'm new to this phone.

good info, im just not sure why people use xposed as opposed to a custom ROM with the features that theyre looking for baked into the ROM
Because sometimes, there are many things "cooked", and if I need 1 or 2 mods, then I don't need to deal with all the bugs that came with custom ROMs.

thats pretty fair, but i dont really get many (if any) bugs with custom ROMsif installed correctly. Im not bashing xposed, i just think that custom ROMs are the way to go for my taste
plus, in my experience, using xposed on a stock rom is better, you don't have to deal with any bugs

It can screw things up fast and often! Haha. I use XPosed purely for boot manager and greenify. Those are safe on any rom. Unfortunately there are so many modules you can use on your phone that aren't meant for it. If you're not happy to screw things up to learn what works than it can be a huge headache. Lol. I gave up screwing with many of the modules. Oh. I also use it for no ads and background play for YouTube.

no, im on resurrection remix nowadays and very much miss the TW camera. I ran MOAR for over a year and wanted to try out the AOSP ROMs that everyone was ranting about, and i rather enjoy several things about RR, but the camera is rather lackluster on AOSP. TW ROMs have access to the stock Samsung camera, which is awesome!! I really havent found much that just WOWs me about AOSP vs MOAR other than the fact that MOAR isnt being updated anymore (yes, you jsut witnessed someone remind themselves about why they decided on something that they had totally forgotten LoL) I spent a little time finding out if one could port the stock TW cam to AOSP, but apparently its not possible

"Thanks for reaching out! Android Pie changed the way all apps interact with the space around the notch, and introduced standardized methods for app developers to support full screen mode. This should drive app developers to update their apps with native full screen options, without the need for custom notch settings.
For our first Android Pie release, we are using Google's standard implementation of the notch space. We will continue to monitor adoption of Pie's full-screen capabilities and evaluate whether it makes sense to customize and re-develop our own notch settings.
Hope that helps answer your question. Have a great day!"
Using horizontal app switch is so fundamentally and ergonomically wrong to the feel of Android. HTC (whom I love) used this horizontal card system in 2012. It was awful. Custom AOSP ROMs saved us. Now Google is doing it. !amazing! So wrong. And the PIP or WIW is way harder to do now compared to Android 8.1 and below.
Google you really botched this BS.
Nah it's just you aren't used to it. This has been the norm in the iOS world for several years. Point is it's no better or worse
On the first day of getting the Essential the Pie update was there... LOL
Well the swipe up drive anyone else crazy, with it always swipping the launcher up slightly too? I hope they can change this, so it's not also always moving up as well... hmm
Oh its terrible for sure...I have one PH-1 rolled back to 8.1, but I am holding off on mine for the moment being You have to wipe data to go back 8.1. Tried flashing the No wipe BTS package and it was boot loops for breakfast.
Got mine today, came with 7.1, thought it MIGHT update to 8.1 before 9, nope, went right to 9
DO NOT like the new menu structure. Installed Nova, it crashes on launch. So far, NOT impressed with 9.
Phone looks nice, just not the OS's UI.
Did you factory reset after the jump from 7.1 to 9?
Actually I'm getting the hang of it, you have to make a really fast like flick up to not have the launcher move... It takes practice... LOL
Adaptive Brightness not working in Pie, anyone else?
@p51d007, I hear ya, starting to feel like iOS around here... LOL
To be honest, so far working good here, just that darn flicking up fast action needed to get to the windows, without moving the launcher has been the only complaint I have at the moment... Haven't had much time on it, maybe something else will bug me later... LOL

Are you actually able to get that camera app to save the slowmo videos? I can't seem to get it to actually save. It seems to be taking the video then when pressing stop it crashes and there's no video there. It does work with a 5.3 version of Google camera.
I've tried playing with some setting in the new 6.1 camera to get it to save with no luck, what setting are you using to have the slowmo videos to save?

Personally using RR. It's los but with more added in.
Slim is just that, a slimmed down version. If you don't need a whole lot and just add apps, go for that. If you like to change buttons and stuff, go los, if you want fonts and extras go RR. They each add a little onto the next.
There is obviously a lot more involved, but you get my point
LineageOS (my ROM so i'm biased):
- The only ROM driving forward development at the moment
- Has extra customisations, but definitely not as much as RR
- Is what other ROMs are usually based on
Resurrection Remix:
- device tree probably almost identical to LineageOS. Kernel is practically the same too.
- On the ROM level, it has extra layers of customisability over LineageOS
Slim:
- Very cut down as the name suggests, less "Google" and more AOSP-like right now
Just installed LineageOS and still in the middle of setting everything up, but my review do far is "wow".
I feel like I'm using a Pixel.

I'm looking at Calyx, and it seems like it would actually work. Graphene didn't work for me because all of the apps it came with were out of date and didn't work right, but given the fact that Calyx uses well known privacy focused apps, it looks like I'll be good to go once they've come out with their Android 13 update lol

To be fair, the graphene apps have a popup that tells you its apps are not meant for your current version of android. Also they're in my opinion painful to look at because they don't comply to the system theme
