Hi,
When we made a call or receive, the screen goes black while we take to our ears.
But, my phone is still black after taking away from ears while in conversation. I have to swipe the sensor area to have a visible screen.
Do i have to replace the sensor or just have to adjust the sensor ?
Hi if you have an EU version the light and proxymity sensor was directly on board...hard to replace...solution for you and others are changing back glue because if you pres top of back glass near the camera the sensors are working....back cover glue wont stick and thats the issue or if somebody replace the lcd there are another issue because the board is too far from front glas and the sensors are not working good...there is a solution uv filter sticker on glas..
Hello,
It is a problem for all Xperia Z# lineup.
The proximity sensor tends to be too far from the glass after some time.
If you have root and Xposed, you can install Sensor Disabler and then mockup the value of the first proximity sensor to 5cm and the second to 0cm. This way, the screen will not go black when calling (it will after a short time but won't be blocked by the sensor so you can re-light it by pressing start button or volume buttons).
If you don't have root :
- go to settings => accessibility and tick "end call with start button" (or something like this)
- Or use headphones !
If you are stuck on black screen, your can force with your fingers on the top right corner of the Xperia Z5 (where the sensor is) to make it work shortly. Or you can press start button + volume up button to reboot.
I hope this will help you !

lol my xperia z5 had exact problem and gues what happend with my mothers z5 LFMAO same sensor OMG what the hell is wrong with Sony...also i always got white dots on the screen after more then a year of usage...no wonder i dont buy Sony phones anymore...my last one was XZ and this one also had bright dots on screen but this time its red color and it can be seen on black background...also xperias overheats very fast and then works slowly after and so on...i can clearly say that after xperia z2 every Sony phone is rubbish and made with poor quality PERIOD
Same problem since I have my Z5. It happens only sometimes and when I clean the sensor (also only with my finger during a phone call) it works again.
Maybe its because of some application which use proximity sensor. Did u install any notification or screen wake app ?

we can asure u that it is a hardware problem.i for example had a two xperias z5 took it to waranty and they fixed the sensor...the other z5 sensor broke 1 week before waranty but my brother couldnt find documents and we didnt send to reapir then...so it is definetly not a software issue....2x xperia z5 2x same issue LOL
Its a sensor problem, the sensor is weak.

Check your tempered glass.. The tempered glass must have an opening on the proximity sensor location.
It doesn't have a tempered glass...
This app fixes that issue (root only) :

Hi, I have noticed a problem on my M2: during call the display is turning on and off and i am pressing the display with my ears. when i have tried to put my finger on the sensor, the screen went black, but placing my finger a few millimetres over the sensor turned it on again. i have also noticed a strange faint pulsing red light coming out of the proxymity sensor during call.
do you think its a hw problem, or is it something what may be fixed via an update?

Hi, I had the same problem with you before.
then I fixed it, by doing this following steps :
1. Removing the screen protector(was not the default one you sometimes get with the phone), just check you don’t lose your warranty
and then, this is the stupid ( but magic ) steps:
2. Switch off the phone
3. Press firmly on the entire top of the phone for about 3-4seconds (top part of the screen, left side from your speaker)
4. Switch back on
5. Once started up, press again on the top part of the screen.
6. Finally you can try to dial *#*#7378423#*#* for check your Proximity Sensor is ON or OFF.

Profimity Sensor i see OFF, I can not change it.
I have OPO with CM12 nightly firmware.
Problem appeared also in CM11S, CM11 nightly
When in call screen turns black and i can't turn it on.
So if i accidently press to call to wrong person, i cant cancell call.
Found temporary fix: swipe over proximity sensor, then press Power button, and it will turn on in couple seconds.
But it doen't work always.
Hello, fréquent problem when you put a screen protector too near the proximity sensor....
Use Proximity Sensor Finder on play store to test it.
If you see 0.0cm every time remove your protector

Hello,
i see 0.0cm every time, but i have no any screen protector or case, its "as bought"
The "sensor last covered" timer resets every time when i SWYPE the green area (dynamic), not over black something near camera, not when i just put my finger there and thats weird.
The issue is modem. Flash the Alpha modem and it will fix the issue. (I'm too lazy to link but just search and you'll find it)
problem solved with flashing CM11s with full wipe including userdata_64G.img
thanks
Lately, my proximity sensor has been giving me trouble - at least, I think it's the proximity sensor. The symptoms:
1) I can't unlock the phone unless there is enough ambient light. Generally not a problem, but a little inconvenient.
2) As soon as I start a call, the screen goes black and will not turn back on no matter what, making it impossible to bring up the dialpad or hang up. I've enabled the "power button to hang up" setting, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. The only way to end a call is to wait for the other side to hang up or remove the battery. The former is fine if I'm actually talking to a person, but if I get into an auto-attendant tree I'm screwed. It happens regardless of whether I'm holding the phone to my face or not. Flat on a table, same behavior.
The phone is rooted, are there any apps or things I can do to verify that it's the proximity sensor? Is there any way to just disable the proximity sensor in software?
Use the hidden menu (3845#*850#) and go into device test.
There is a proximity sensor test there. As you move your hand near the sensor it wall say near and as you move it away it will give you a light reading.
Thanks - the top always says "Proximity: NEAR". The bottom one says "Light: off" If I wave my hand hear the sensor, it turns blue and give me a reading hovering around 10. Closer to the phone and it's red and gives me a lower reading. Holding my finger on the phone, completely blocking the sensor, gives me the "Light: off" reading again.
I'm not quite sure what to make of that.
I've had similar problems with my international version G3. Both times I have had to take off the back cover, remove the various screws around the top half of the phone, pull off the plastic casing, and then use compressed air to spray out the area around the proximity sensor. After this the phone works fine for a month or so.
Somehow dust seems to be getting into the phone quite easily. I'm wondering if the area around the speaker grill is not fully sealed.
I finally took the time to disassemble my phone and sure enough, the proximity sensor was filthy. A couple seconds with a can of compressed air and things seem to be back to normal.
Thanks!
I have a lg g stylo the sensor is so sensitive .. I wave my hand over my phone and the screen goes black I am trying to figure out how to turn it off ..

Proximity Sensor Issue Solved
Just opened the Mobile yesterday night, and after a little hectic; i had managed to clean the dust from board sensors.
Working Perfect now, like a charm !
Hello everybody!
I am looking for a little help. I am using screen protection 'hardglass' from 3mk for the front screen. It's covering entire screen and does not have any 'cuts' for camera etc..
Problem is when i want to call, the sensor does not work correctly. Usually when you put your phone to ear, sensor is detecting that and closing the screen. Here I have issue that after hitting the call button screen goes immediately black, so I think it 'detects' the protection of the screen as not transparent. I remember for some time it worked ok but for few months its always going black when i call - it is quite annoying, ain't gonna lie. So I searched some info but there is no chance I can cut this protection glass at home without destroying this little piece cause entire layer gonna crack. I could search for a glass with a hole in place of sensor but cannot find. When i Service Test the ' proximity sensor' it is always ON when i have cover on my screen. As I really find this protection helpful (I got my phone maaany times on the ground and cracked that protection not the screen from phone, I would like to find a working solution with the hardglass on my screen.
So I wanna try the other way - is there somewhere in advanced settings (edit files) that I can have touchscreen active when I call (normal call or whatsapp call) ? I am pretty sure there is some file responsible for actions and could be modified? Anyone have some knowledge regarding this particular matter?
Cheers!

Solution on 2nd post.
Hi.
Lately I'm having problems with proximity sensor.
1. During phone calls, after getting phone to my ear, screen turns off and that's fine, but after ending the call screen never wakes up. I have to press the Power button to wake up the screen.
2. After pressing the power button, screen turns off and AOD screen shows up, that's ok, but after putting it to pocket or after covering the proximity sensor with hand and taking it off the AOD screen doesn't show up. It's black screen always. I have to wake up the phone and off for AOD screen to show up.
I was testing the proximity sensor with different testing apps and it is recognizing near proximity but it never recognize that there is nothing near anymore. Ex.: during testing I cover the proximity with hand and it is recognizing it, but when I take my hand off, proximity sensor is still saying there is something near.
Problems started some time ago occasionally but since yesterday it always like that. It started on Android 10. Downgraded to 9 (ver 1.9 from zte de site) and it was ok for 2 weeks like. Yet it started to get stuck for good, even upgrading back to Android 10 (v 2.4) didn't help.
I looked where the sensor is, left side from earpiece and I swear I could see some dust under the glass, but since the phone is waterproof (IP68) how there could be any dust inside? I was shaking the phone to get rid of the dust from the proximity sensor to no avail, sensor is still stuck.
No glass protector applied, no any cover.
What do you guys think? Should I get RMA for it? Or s there anything can be done? Anyone else having these problems?
FIX for proximity sensor getting stuck/not working properly
Found fix by myself.
Proximity sensor in my case got some dust in it or it de-calibrated itself. If proximity sensor is broken on hardware level, probably this solution won't work. Yet, you are free to try it anyway.
If your proximity sensor de-calibrated somehow or got dust on it and it is misbehaving, do the following:
1. Go to Phone app, enter:
Code:
*983*673636#
to enable EMODE (self-testing app), toast info about enabling EMODE will be shown,
2. In the Phone app enter:
Code:
*983*0#
to start the EMODE, menu for various test will be shown,
3. Go to SENSOR TEST
4. Cover the proximity sensor with your hand ? (upper side of the phone ), test will say something like PASS in green color),
5. Swipe to the bottom of the menu, place your phone flat on the table in not so bright environment and hit CALIBRATE.
6. Your sensors are now re-calibrated and proximity sensor will work like new, even if it is dusted.
7. If you want to disable EMODE, go back to Phone app and enter
Code:
*983*2567336#
but refrain from doing so, if you want to run EMODE again in case of any of sensors misbehaving again and wanting to recalibrate later.
That's it, my proximity sensor is working again like new.
Sidenote: if there is dust inside the phone, phone is not so waterproof (IP68) after all. Just be careful with water with it
