Very cool. I didn't think twrp would run under a stock kernel. Thjs will make flashing stuff much easier.
Just so it's clear exactly what is happening, thfis will have the ability run + multiple system roms and select one at boot time (which is HUGE! ) but technically this won't be "full" safetrap as the part that allows booting new kernels won't work here as none of the s8 kernels have kexec support and none can load modules, right? Not to take anything away from this incredible achievement though! I just wanted to make sure both myself and others understand what this means exactly and to be sure no one gets the wrong idea
So glad to have another dev putting stuff out there!

Nice to see this device didn't die before her time like many others before her.....I figured she would get cracked eventually

Technically slot rom works on S3, S4 and S5. As we only flash stock custom ROM's only.
On S8 its broken for now as stock init binary have selinux mount issue.
Any way will do more test and release it soon.

That sounds great! So it means we will be able to flash custom ROMS?

I'm skeptical since it was posted in April fools day. If this is true tho, this is fantastic.

Stock based as we still have a locked bootloader

if someone has Note 8 N950U can grab partition list
Code:
adb shell su -c "ls -al /dev/block/platform/soc/1da4000.ufshc/by-name"

Ya rom slot will work for custom TouchWiz roms, just no aosp unfortunately*.
Having twrp will be amazing, so much easier to deal with bootloops, and true nandroid backups! So many things will be easier. My mind has been spinning with ideas ?
Send me a message whenever you're ready to go about rom support. I definitely will at least make partcyborgrom support it.
Although it might be possible on Oreo, given that tw on the s9 has to play nice with Android and vendors now, maybe enough of those changes trickled back to the s8.

So I guess unfortunately this only works on rooted Nougat. That's okay... this is progress! If S8 Snapdragon Oreo gets rooted in the future, will it be easy to make it compatible with that as well?

Safestrap is already up.

what's this mean for mf3 users using safestrap?
Will have to see if the MF3 kernal modules work on the new version. We still have to wait for a kernel Dev to fix things or Sammy to release source before we get a working ROM though.

I was wondering the same time, according to this YouTube video you can flash I9505 ROMS on the I337 & I337M.
Here the link to the ROM thread: Foxhound ROM
And you would also need this kernel: Faux123 US/Canadian kernel
Hopefully 4.3 can be installed as well

I doubt it will boot with any 4.2 kernel, but it will boot with the right 4.3 kernel (more on that later).
So far:
Everything seems to work except wifi. Even dirty flashed over 4.2.2.
Just got it booting this morning right before I left for work, so I didn't even try to root yet. (root from the kitchen didn't work)
Edit:
Got root access.

Is the S5 slipping away?

Is it just me or has development waned for the S5 due to the locked bootloader? There's just so much you can do with safestrap and modifying Touchwiz. In reality, the odds of a bootloader unlock being discovered is rather slim. Look at the S4, the newest firmware releases are still not unlocked and you're forced to use safestrap. I realize we rely on a talented hacker out there to find an exploit that lets us replace the bootloader with a custom one OR the carrier allowing the bootloader to be unlocked. I've read somewhere that the S5 is approved for use by the U.S. Government so the likelihood of Verizon making the phone insecure by allowing people to unlock the bootloader is close to nil. I just really really want to see this phone not slip into XDA obscurity.

it is slipping away, but not because of the bootloader being locked. Not as many people (devs included) bought the phone as early adopters, so i'm guessing there's just not enough interest or intent in the phone.

That right there is why development is slow. There's only so much one can do with a stock system to work with. Expect to see development have a boost after each OTA until all mods are worked in, then the same downward slope until the next OTA. Repeat. :good:

There may be hope for that. Over in the Verizon S4 forums, they got kexec working. No aosp yet, and its very unstable, but they found it. It should work on the S5 with a little more work. Hopefully this happens this month.

I'm not sure if kexec is possible without having a SELinux permissive kernel. I believe the Galaxy s5 is enforcing unfortunately (not vulnerable).

Actually I'm running a GPE ROM on my Verizon S4 right now. It's SafeStrap compatible. I love AOSP vs TouchWiz.
Being pessimistic it does seem like the beginning of the end for s5. By this I mean to say that safestrap just doesn't cut it as I do not like stock kernel. But everyone's done an amazing job thus far so haven't completely given up but I think nexus devices are the route I will take.

to my knowledge it is in the kernel. on vzw s4 mdk devicds were unlocked allowing you to flash custom kernals that were modded by devs like ktoons to make it permissive..
The later firmware builds (cant go back to mdk if took ota to a newer firmware) are in the same boat as the s5 so if they have it on later kernal builds for the s4 then it might b possible.. then again, they have it on the note 3 but doesnt work on the s5 so that concept isnt always possible
Not slipping away. Just at a road block. Everyone has done all the modding they can do on the device. I think everyone is waiting on 5.0.

I'm working on it. It's rather difficult. It appears the kernel was compiled with no /dev/mem(kmem) character devices in the config. After going through the kernel source, it looks like SELinux was set to always enforce. This is where ro.build.selinux.enforce=1 comes from. The bootloader checks the boot.img hash and for a special cookie
Code:
SEANDROIDENFORCE
which appears before the hash. If this cookie/magic isn't present, the warranty bit will blow. Since I can't access memory directly, and the methods I could use are significantly limited because of the Enforcing status, some sort of vulnerability in the kernel will need to be present. As soon as we can get Permissive, I can get us kernel modules, and hopefully kexec with the help of a few other great devs @Surge1223 @CalcProgrammer1
Your efforts are truly appreciated!

The OP is originally from September something. I just seen this post and was interested in it, it is now November and if you ask me, yes it has slipped away, technology moves on quickly, i6+ is out and now we will start seeing things about a s6 in the works and it is what it is.
I blame the locked bootloader on a ton of stuff not being created. You have to grab ahold of technology in the moment and use it fast or else its gone before you know it.
It is certainly nothing like the S3 forums. That place is still kicking.
From what I understand they're close to kexec on it and the S4, since they only need KK-compatible kernels and they previously had unlocked bootloaders. That isn't the case here.
Samsung really screwed up with this one. If the N6 wasn't assured to be a failure on Verizon and it didn't have a massive footprint I'd be all over it.
Everybody panic.
Wish we can get some good news soon.
Dead is all I'm seeing, except for the few amazing devs we have now. Those still building, thank you

I flashed a zip yesterday so I would think a properly made ROM would flash. I did try one yesterday but it didn't flash. I'm pretty sure it was a updater script error on my part. I haven't had the time to look into it further. As for our kernel we will have to use the stock one.

It's not going too good on my end. I'm sick of Odining back to stock. I must have done it about a dozen times after various failed mods. I'm pretty much calling it quits until a better recovery becomes available. FlashFire restore doesn't work for me so when a mistake is maid I have to go back to stock. Hopefully there will be some updates to make this more reliable. I'm OK with the few mods available and debloating for now.

Just out of curiosity are you trying to port roms already made for other devices? If so I would assume that the kernel on your locked phone cannot work with the system.img in the ported rom. What you could do is find a rom that is stock rooted only, no other mods or lightly modded and grab that script. From there download the verizon s6 system, extract it and add the su stuff then wrap all that in a zip. The permissions and symlinks should be close enough to get you booted and if it boots you can start working out all of the bugs
Sorry if you already tried all that, just want to help if I can.
*Edit*
Almost forgot Im sure you figured this out already but you would need to edit the boot out of the installer script
*Double edit*
Here is a non aroma rom for your installer script. He is planning on implementing aroma so you might want to grab it asap

misterxtc has helped me develop roms for the vzw s5 as well as his own roms. were not a+ devs by any means but we do have experience with it.. the rom created was im sure from his own build from the stock base rom for the vzw s6.
the vzw s5 also has a locked BL so we are very aware that you can only use roms compatible with the stock BL and kernel.. Flashfire does not appear to flash the BL or kernel at all but also cannot write the whole system without the kernel.
it has been tried multiple times by him and myself on my s6 edge and each time results in having to odin back to stock and start over.
We also both talked to hsbadr and his multisystem unfortunately does not work for us since we have no ext sd card.

Turning your Galaxy S5 into Galaxy S6 by using a custom ROM like Sixperience ROM.
It seems pretty cool but still waiting it to support Verizon S5.
yea this is interesting
would it work on the dev edition?
This looks awesome, would also love support for Verizon S5

I tried an earlier version of this some time ago with jrkruse's ROM patch. It worked, with a few hiccoughs, if IIRC. Just flash the ROM and then the patch.

How did you flash this.. is it not an aroma rom?
Sent from my SM-G900V using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Just pick what you want installed and rip out the AROMAtization.

I just flashed the rom but after flashing youll see a verizon error screen, youll boot into download and flash the OD5 kernel ( I used OC4 kernel) then it will boot but youll mainly see apps crashing if that happens hard reset it. boot up may take a while but youll be there

Why not just flash the AT&T rom and then the rom patch? Or will that not work?

Custom ROM's ?

Hi,
Recently got a Galaxy S7 (up from Note 5)....
Came to the XDA forums and theres absolutely no custom ROMs out for this device....
Why is this so? figured this device would be pretty popular?
Will this trend continue or will some appear soon?
Cheers
The reason is the device is still quite new and the developer friendly snapdragon version is all bootloader locked and can't be rooted, let alone flashing custom rom.

I'm waiting for a rooted stock rom (exynos) :/

True the phone has only been out for about 20~ days or so. But generally theres at the very least a stock ROM with root and a few of the other adjustments and alterations made to it by now.

Should try the TWRP + Root (SuperSu) function available on the ROMS and KERNELS forum. Worked fine for my new S7.
Just install xposed, that should feed your thirst for the time being.

yeah I already have twrp and root installed, just saw that there are newer firmwares available already and don't want to go through the whole process again.
installing an already rooted stock rom would be easier than having to go back to stock recovery etc...
let's hope rooted stock roms aren't far. if I knew anything how to do it myself I'd try my luck in making one
