Hello fellow XDAers,
I am waiting for MIUI 9 to drop so we can pull that into the kitchen and cook. I am going to attempt to work with the new system, I haven't ported anything after Jellybean. So with that, I wanted to see who was on-board to potentially want to try MIUI.
Two things; One - I am not saying I am for sure going to be successful, but I will try. 2; MIUI 9 release date is expected to be end of May or early June 2017.
Feel free to have a discussion of MIUI here, I will also use this thread for small updates in regards to MIUI.
--- Small Post Update ---
MIUI 9 ?
Here is a small list of features to potentially look out for in the new version of MIUI. This is a leap forward into Nougat from MIUI 8.
Multi-window support
Quick-reply from notifications
Optimised dose mode
RAM optimization
Improved data saver
Always-on VPN
Call screening feature
Dual space feature
Dual apps
I have honestly never once run a MIUI ROM. Im not quite the flashaholic i used to be (especially now, as finicky as the v20 seems to be), but i could be game for flashing it a few times to kick the tires, see how it rolls.
Am i to understand that it does not have a home screen/app drawer for stock launcher ala iOS? it does retain androids ability to change launchers?
Is there anything "must see" on MIUI? ...not so much eye candy·· I don't care about bling so much, im all about that utility.

Hello! We have all been there with the flashaholic syndrome. It's a fortunate disease ? the V20 is a unit that is quite more finicky than most, but surely not the worst.
Initially, this will be a project starting off with the 918 and working into other variants as I relearn Android and what the new systems look like. It is a launcher that emulates that of an iOS landscape. Yes, you still have all of the ability of changing launches, etc. Must "see" would be animations, style, small 'functionality' pieces like that of the battery bar rather than a battery icon and so on.
It's more or less a eye candy piece of OS rather than something slim, although it is still smaller than a factory image. More "bloated" than a aosp rom but still functions greatly under the right environment.

I'm excited to hear that, good news for our v20 , thanks on avance bro ???
I have attempted MIUI 8 but there are too many differences in the framework(MM vs N) to patch correctly. I was going to patch 9 in once it releases but if you want it you can have it.
Last time I had miui is when i ported it to the skyrocket in the jellybean era. Would love to see it again. Back when porting ROMs was simple

Collaboration is better when its on big projects. something like miui wont need a collab. Now if you do get stuck then sure ill certainly help.
Would love to have someone seriously try to get a stable Miui going. Ran it back in my old Droid X days and really enjoyed it. Good luck and I hope you can do it.

Added some minor information to OP about Miui 9 itself.

Even if we manage to make treble work on A8 it will be an useless feature since Samsung's treble implementation is bad and isn't seamless (A/B treble) so you can't flash GSI imgs on-the-fly

Personally I don't care much about AOSP's, not just because I don't like it but also because I buy a Samsung phone for the hardware/software they offer, so I don't expect someone to do necessarily an AOSP ROM for it (even tho I'm willing to help the devs that will be interested on it). So my reply is the following: Have you got enough patience to wait someone works on it? Yes, you wait for it while you stay on Stock ROM (it isn't bad tho, TouchWiz 2012/13 times are a far memory); No, you try to code yourself a working device tree/kernel or sell your A8 and get another phone that isn't a Samsung one

have any tips on building a device tree? if the device was on 7570, it would be easy but there being no 7875 devices.... should i bulid it from the bottom?
Well Exynos is headache for this same reason(unless some other OEM adopts it to ease things up), and also Samsung usually makes it hard for us to get any kind of opening with it's devices to build stuff for it. If you ask me, at this rate the pros of getting a Custom ROM in your device is getting outweighed by the cons. I would also agree that 'Samsung Experience' is far better than the 'TouchWiz' nightmare.

I would like to work on A8 more deeply, after TWRP and my custom kernel (which is still under heavy testing for v2 lel) I would like to work on a Custom SE ROM for it. Unfortunately I can't do a lot since I still don't own the phone and I'm waiting the prices drops down to buy it (or that someone gifts me one instead ?)

Sounds great! Good luck with your ongoing projects, and for A8/A8+, price may drop with all the Galaxy X and S10 hype. So far it has dropped from $458 to $408 here in India (for A8+)

That sucks a lot since i had this device not by my own will it was a gift and from day one i loved the design rounded corners glass all black and most of the specs camera, ram, battery not the cpu so much but the software omg it suck so much ,i have a nexus 5x with a recent pie beta rom and even for an outdated phone it runs way better,i just wish someone had made a stock rom for this cause the specs are just a shame to throw way.
I would love to get LineageOS on my Samsung A8. I'm sure I'm not alone. Please keep this thread updated with developments.
I am interested too in a version of Lineage OS for the A8 2018. The Smartphone is very good for the price. But Samsung's Software is awful and I love the possibilities to customize the Smartphone with Lineage OS. I am looking forward hearing from the developers!

Graphene didn't work for me because all of the apps it came with were out of date and didn't work right, but given the fact that Calyx uses well known privacy focused apps, it looks like I'll be good to go once they've come out with their Android 13 update lol

First of all, they're not out of date. They're the latest from AOSP. Oh, and they DO work right.
Second, if you don't like, that's what makes Android great -- install alternative applications, I suggest from F-droid.

Please don't write things that are demonstrably false. The truth is inverse of what you have written.
To be fair, the graphene apps have a popup that tells you its apps are not meant for your current version of android. Also they're in my opinion painful to look at because they don't comply to the system theme
