Lineage OS? - Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) Questions & Answers

Any idea on the status of development for a Lineage OS ROM? Is there anything we could do to help? This phone already have a great battery life but I'm sure it would be even better with a clean ROM without Samsung bloatware.

At this time none

@Le Penguino and @McFy are interested on it so there's an high chance A8 will actually get a working tree, but not in a less amount of time since it's summer now and since to get a really stable tree it needs lots of work and testing, expecially on Exynos lol

Why do you find the stock one absolute?
What a new rom can "really" improve?

for one the design. i love the aosp designs, and im not in favor of samsung experience.
second, the bloatware. too much bloatware in the stock. finally, the great customizing you can do in aosp roms

That sucks a lot since i had this device not by my own will it was a gift and from day one i loved the design rounded corners glass all black and most of the specs camera, ram, battery not the cpu so much but the software omg it suck so much ,i have a nexus 5x with a recent pie beta rom and even for an outdated phone it runs way better,i just wish someone had made a stock rom for this cause the specs are just a shame to throw way.

I would love to get LineageOS on my Samsung A8. I'm sure I'm not alone. Please keep this thread updated with developments.

I am interested too in a version of Lineage OS for the A8 2018. The Smartphone is very good for the price. But Samsung's Software is awful and I love the possibilities to customize the Smartphone with Lineage OS. I am looking forward hearing from the developers!

I think Google has dropped the ball with Android by not requiring phone manufacturers to enable their hardware to run strictly vanilla Android without any difficulty. If Google had done that, every phone which has the basic hardware for a specific version of Android would have it now. Open Source Android and Linux is a farce because manufacturers have made them essentially closed source due to not releasing the source code for their drivers, etc. May as well have an iPhone.

At least the iPhone is less frustrating because it is a closed system that can't be modified except by Apps and, even then, only those which comply with Apple's requirements unless the phone is jailbroken. I've got an iPod Touch 2nd generation, jailbroken, which I still use and enjoy using but I highly doubt I will still be using the G2X for as long.

I wish I had your optimism. These 3 that are playing in the arena are good. VERY good, but I don't believe Google or LG or nVidia has given us enough to work with to get the radio going. Call it the pessimist in me.

A iPhone ?
You know what's nice with android phones ? You want a overclocked kernel, I can make you one. You want good battery life, I can make something out for you. You want your favourite theme, download it. You want to install a incompatible OS update, give thanks to your devs and they'll make it compatible for you . You want a ROM with nice flames when it boots, then give thanks to your favourite ROM cooker out there.
You want a iPhone, then you get a iPhone, that's it. Gotta like apples.

[Poll][Discussion] MIUI

Hello fellow XDAers,
I am waiting for MIUI 9 to drop so we can pull that into the kitchen and cook. I am going to attempt to work with the new system, I haven't ported anything after Jellybean. So with that, I wanted to see who was on-board to potentially want to try MIUI.
Two things; One - I am not saying I am for sure going to be successful, but I will try. 2; MIUI 9 release date is expected to be end of May or early June 2017.
Feel free to have a discussion of MIUI here, I will also use this thread for small updates in regards to MIUI.
--- Small Post Update ---
MIUI 9 ?
Here is a small list of features to potentially look out for in the new version of MIUI. This is a leap forward into Nougat from MIUI 8.
Multi-window support
Quick-reply from notifications
Optimised dose mode
RAM optimization
Improved data saver
Always-on VPN
Call screening feature
Dual space feature
Dual apps
I have honestly never once run a MIUI ROM. Im not quite the flashaholic i used to be (especially now, as finicky as the v20 seems to be), but i could be game for flashing it a few times to kick the tires, see how it rolls.
Am i to understand that it does not have a home screen/app drawer for stock launcher ala iOS? it does retain androids ability to change launchers?
Is there anything "must see" on MIUI? ...not so much eye candy·· I don't care about bling so much, im all about that utility.

Hello! We have all been there with the flashaholic syndrome. It's a fortunate disease ? the V20 is a unit that is quite more finicky than most, but surely not the worst.
Initially, this will be a project starting off with the 918 and working into other variants as I relearn Android and what the new systems look like. It is a launcher that emulates that of an iOS landscape. Yes, you still have all of the ability of changing launches, etc. Must "see" would be animations, style, small 'functionality' pieces like that of the battery bar rather than a battery icon and so on.
It's more or less a eye candy piece of OS rather than something slim, although it is still smaller than a factory image. More "bloated" than a aosp rom but still functions greatly under the right environment.

I have attempted MIUI 8 but there are too many differences in the framework(MM vs N) to patch correctly. I was going to patch 9 in once it releases but if you want it you can have it.
Last time I had miui is when i ported it to the skyrocket in the jellybean era. Would love to see it again. Back when porting ROMs was simple

What is the hold up with these sorts of ROMs? Are we still waiting on HTC sources to build?

You are welcome to learn how to build a AOSP ROM anytime you want. Doesn't look like there is any developers for AOSP at the moment. Never a dull moment here with the rudeness.

Personally I don't care much about AOSP's, not just because I don't like it but also because I buy a Samsung phone for the hardware/software they offer, so I don't expect someone to do necessarily an AOSP ROM for it (even tho I'm willing to help the devs that will be interested on it). So my reply is the following: Have you got enough patience to wait someone works on it? Yes, you wait for it while you stay on Stock ROM (it isn't bad tho, TouchWiz 2012/13 times are a far memory); No, you try to code yourself a working device tree/kernel or sell your A8 and get another phone that isn't a Samsung one

have any tips on building a device tree? if the device was on 7570, it would be easy but there being no 7875 devices.... should i bulid it from the bottom?
Well Exynos is headache for this same reason(unless some other OEM adopts it to ease things up), and also Samsung usually makes it hard for us to get any kind of opening with it's devices to build stuff for it. If you ask me, at this rate the pros of getting a Custom ROM in your device is getting outweighed by the cons. I would also agree that 'Samsung Experience' is far better than the 'TouchWiz' nightmare.
