I'm trying to install the new Oreo update through Odin but my download mode doesn't seem to be working. I hold Volume down, Bixby and Power and it looks like it goes into download mode, but in every video tutorial I've seen, there is also a list of green text to the left of the Downloading icon. Mine does not have that. When my phone is hooked to my computer and I'm running Odin, the program recognizes my phone but after I load all the files and hit the start button, it doesn't actually load anything. I've tried multiple times and always get the same result.
Nevermind. I still don't know why the download screen looks different on my phone than in the videos, but it's working with a different version of Odin.

I was trying to get 2.2 on my captivate. It got hung and after about an hour, I powered down phone (battery out).
I'm now getting [phone... (!).. COMPUTER] picture
Trying to get back to stock ROM 2.1, but I cannot get device in download mode
I had to use adb to get in download mode originally.
Is it possible I got a phone that doesn't go into download mode based on button combinations? If so, what do I do?
Unplug your phone from USB
Pull battery
Close Odin
Open Odin
Put in battery
Hold both volume buttons (NO POWER) and plug in USB
Hopefully this gets you into download mode
Still Fail
I've been trying that, but without open/close of Odin.
Still failed when I added that step.
get to that screen again: hold volume up/down and power at the same time.
When the screen goes black, then release power button but keep holding down volume up/down

Yes, and remember to keep the volume buttons pressed in while plugging in the USB... I always hold them in until the droid/caution sign comes up.

Try the methods prescribed. There are several minor variations but you may have a phone that doesn't do three button recovery. In order to tell, we need some history on your phone. What is the RF Cal date? Were you able to three button into download before? Do you know if it was one of the ones that had the three button problem?
autocorrelation,
I tried that with the usb cable plugged in and without it plugged in.
Still no good.
joeybear23,
I've been trying that all afternoon. Probably about 50 times.
ianwood,
How do I get the RF Cal date? I don't see it under the battery where the S/N is located. I tried to do 3 button recovery to put phone into download mode when trying to install 2.2, but it wouldn't work. I had to use "adb reboot download".
I've never tried it before today. The only issue I've had was that it could NEVER connect to AT&T server to check for an update.
can you get it into recovery mode?
no recovery
No. It won't go into recovery mode either.
The only thing it WILL do is respond to all 3 buttons being pressed by the black screen flash after about 8 seconds.
If you keep holding all 3 buttons will it flash again after the initial black screen? Try releasing the power button and keeping holding vol up/down after the second black screen.
If I keep holding all 3 buttons, it just keeps flashing.
Also tried to let it flash twice (and even more) and releasing power right when it goes to black 2nd (or 3rd) time. Also tried releasing power half way through black screen, and right before black screen re-appears and also just as the screen powers back up. None of them work.
I ran into this yesterday and about freaked out. Don't panic - apparently one of the guys had this happen to them a lot. Take a deep breath, have ODIN open, plug your USB cable in, hold the volume buttons down at the same time, press and hold the power button till you see the phone to computer, and let go. You should get to the download screen again. Good luck; sucks when something like that happens and you don't know what's going on.
I know this wont help much, but I have one of the no 3 button phones, and after 20 minutes of trying all these methods, it did go into d-load mode. Unfortunately, I don't know exactly which combo I used since my brain went into overload when I finally saw the triangle appear. There is hope though, and please PLEASE post which one works for you(I'm afraid to mess with mine until I find a foolproof method)
I had a phone that wouldnt respond to ANY 3 button combo I tried. I bricked it (sorta on purpose) to the phone-!-computer screen and went and replaced the phone at AT&T (under the 30 day deal).
It didnt initially work with the 3-button but after the JH7 OTA DL mode and recovery mode work perfectly now. Also, GPS has been completely spot on when testing on my motorcycle with the phone in my backpack running my tracks.
If you are under the 30-day return policy, bring it in and come up with a good reason as to why they should give you a new phone. If not, then you're sorta SOL....

This method just saved my butt!!!
I have never had trouble getting into recovery or download mode until today when I did a dumb thing. The phone would lock at the ATT screen when trying to power on and if the phone was off and I plugged it in to charge it would freeze and the circle logo that comes up before the green charging battery does.
Every method of getting into download or recovery failed up till now.
Thanks Zilch!!!
Hey guys gonna move this to Q&A.
I had this problem a few days ago after updating to 2.2. I tried every single button/usb/battery combo and nothing worked. FORTUNATELY I was within 30 days of purchasing it (I guess there's a silver lining when diving right into "hacking"), and I brought it to the store with the box and receipt and just told them it gave me an error when turning it on (played dumb) and they swapped it out without even testing. If you're over the 30 days then I think you're pretty much SOL... gotta pay for a replacement.
bricked
I declared it to be bricked and took it back to the store. I have only had it 2 weeks, so I basically pulled the same move of playing dumb and they gave me another one without any problem.
I'm wanting to try to see if I can put it in recovery mode and/or download mode with the buttons without even attaching it to anything, but now I'm paranoid about bricking it.

Buddy, we need you to remember I'm in the exact position, no combo works and I bricked it after trying to load 2.2
Going into recovery or download will not brick it, its only everything after that point that might get you bricked.
Hey guys, I was flashing back to the stock ROM when it got interrupted. The phone displays the phone-!-computer icon when it's turned on. I've had this happen before several times but each time I've been able to get back into download mode by removing the battery, sim and memory card, reinsert the battery, hold the volume buttons, and then plug in the USB. This time it will not go into download mode. I've searched the forums and tried all the variations but nothing will get it in to download mode. The only think i haven't tried is the soldering the resistor to the USB connector trick. Does anyone have any other ideas? I would really appreciate any help.
Make sure you have Odin3 One Click [Stock] downloaded.
Try pulling your battery, hold down your power button for 10-15 seconds to drain flea power so your RAM will totally clear in case anything is still on it.
Open Odin3 One Click
Put your battery back into your phone
Hold down the up and down volume buttons on your phone, and simultaneously plug your phone into your computer.
Your phone should go into download mode which will show a yellow triangle with the android digging, and you should see your phone show in a com port in Odin. At this point, just click start and hopefully the Stock Rom will flash successfully. You can find how to flash to stock and the link to Odin3 one click in the captivate bible post in the android development section.
Hey, thanks for taking the time to reply. I still get the phone-!-computer icon. It just seems like the download mode isn't enabled or something. I've seen this screen before but i've been able to get into the download mode without too much trouble.
How long have you left the battery out? Try leaving it out for at least 5 minutes before trying again. If that doesn't work, build a jig.
Hey, i'll give the 5 minutes a shot but it sounds like i need to make an emergency trip to Fry's on my way home from the airport. Thanks for the info!
Hey, just wanted to post a follow up... the jig cable DID work! It was a tense couple of moments after i plugged it in but it worked! I was able to reflash with odin and the phone is back up and running! Thanks a lot to the people who helped out!
Hi, I was flashing my phone with Odin and got a blue screen on my phone, then i took the battery off and on again, but now the phone does not even turn it on... Does any one have any idea, what can i do?
Thanks
Can you get into download mode
No, not even download mode... it does not turn it on at all...
Have you tried all the button combos to get into Download Mode. The one I remember is:
1. Remove battery, SIM, microSD (if you have one) from your phone
2. Wait at least 10 seconds with the phone in this state
3. Hold volume up/down, do not let go
4. While holding the volume keys, insert the battery
If the above worked, your phone should almost immediately be in Download Mode. If not, do some searching for the other variations of key combo/process to get into Download Mode.
You might also want to try a JIG. You can build/buy them, and it's something that will force the phone into Download Mode if at all possible still.
Didn't see anyone mention this so I though I would just throw it on here. (sorry if someone already mentioned it)
You can access Gear 2's Recovery/Download mode the same way you could on the original Gear:
-Hold the "Power Button" until the unit reboots and you see the orange "Rebooting..." text then press the "Power Button" 5 (ish) times and
you will be taken to the a menu where you can select "Continue/Download/Recovery/etc" just like the old Gear.
Hopefully this means we can eventually install custom recovery and roms on this thing!
No one mentioned it because it's the same as the gear 1. If you Google galaxy gear download mode or flash custom image or look at the gear 1 forums it's there

Ok I dont know if I am doing something wrong, but I have tried this and still cannot get download mode....I get into the reboot menu, I highlight download, but it still boots normal. Is there a special download screen like on the android devices or does it just go to the clock face?

don't go into the reboot menu, but keep holding the power button until it reboots and then press the power button 5 times.

I also had this problem, no matter how many times I chose download mode, the watch would always boot normally.
Very frustrating as I was trying to get into download mode for about 3 damn hours!.
OK very simple step that for some reason no ones seems to have mentioned, once you have gotten into the reboot menu, select download mode, on my gear 2 its highlighted blue, then simply press and hold the home key once again, and voila download mode should come up.
Cheers Alan

I can't get my gear 2 neo to reboot at all. It stay's in rebooting mode. Then the gear 2 sign shows up. Then screen goes black. If i push again it goes to rebooting. And we start all again. I had to go to factory reset to pair with s7 edge and all this crap started. samsung won't do anything. Does anyone know of how i can connect to computer? As gears doesn't reconize the watch. Or if there's a patch, something to help me get it functioning again. Got the latest gears manager app. Even tried to pair back with s5. But nothing. Both phones, and computer won't do anything. Samsung told me that the gear 2 neo was compatable with s7 edge.
on my gear 2 i am stuck on download ... Do not turn off target! , after pressing power button is switching off and again the same message, please can someone help
OK so 15min ago my phone was working fine.
I plugged it into my computer via USB to I could copy some videos and my PC didn't detect it so I rebooted the phone to see if that would help....
From that point on, it doesn't go past the initial "Samsung" screen. Well, it sort of does... regardless of any button combinations I press while booting up it always goes into a bright write and green screen that isn't normal. It is some sort of ghosted or washed out image.
From there the only thing it responds to is a forced reboot and it loops back to this again.
I've tried every button combo available and they don't respond. I cannot get to the download menu or the recovery menu so I can't reload the ROM or the TWRP recovery.
I've never seen anything like this in over 10 years of rooting phones... and the worst part is that I wasn't making any changes, just doing a reboot.
Any ideas of the problem?
