Device charges but does not recognize USB data transfer - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

Hello all,
I'm fairly new to this phone but I have been loving it so far. I've had a few issues with it, which most have been resolved (such as the phone defaulting to loudspeaker on phone calls).
Now my biggest issue is the USB connection. I first noticed it when I used to llug the adapter in for my headphones. The port worked great for a time and then I believe it was a security update that was released which seemed to jack it all up. Now I cannot use the port in the bottom of the phone for anything other than charging. Cannot use the headphones, cannot plug in my drone mavic pro (requires the phone app for on-screen first person flight), and I cannot plug the phone into the computer for data transfer.
I have pulled out the book of from my IT troubleshooting days and tried these solutions with no luck.
•various USB cables
•went into settings while phone was physically connected to the computer under connected devices, the USB section was greyed out stating not connected.
•checked in developer options us debugging on and off. I tried both ways for good measure.
•checked USB configuration type. I tried MTP, PTP, and RNDIS.
Any ideas?

I recently had similar USB symptoms on my Pixel 2 XL after the March security update. Also tried it in safe mode and tried factory data reset, but neither helped. I asked Google to replace the phone. Replacement works great, even after March security update.

Umm..I just recently had this issue. TBH I used a 3rd party cable but until last week it could 1. fast charge and 2. transfer data (included adb/fastboot), now however it does only charge, no whatsoever signs of connected device. Bought a new one, it does charge, sync(fastboot, adb,..), no fastcharge but ok.

Have you tried reflashing the March ROM (with the -w removed)? I'm running the March update (did the February too back in February) and I can still enable MTP (I just don't like that it doesn't stick in Oreo - coming from KitKat, that was - and still is - annoying.)

So I tried flashing the March update again and still had no luck. March update was a security update so whatever they did it must be in the coding. I got a warranty replacement for the phone and it works fine. I'm able to do data transfer and fast charging. I was very reluctant to install the March update again but after ignoring the notification for about a week, I installed it and it is working fine.
I talked to Googe about the issue and they said that the bug was fixed but for those phones that had the firmware installed, it has the issue permanently installed. The only option would be to replace the device.

[Q] Windows PC will not recognize phone connected on USB

So, a month or so ago I updated my phone to L without a hitch. This morning, I tried to begin moving to M, but I can't get my computer to recognize that the phone is connected to a USB port.
I'm running the latest Win 7 Pro build (current patches), I've tried using every USB port on the box, and I've tried four different cables. The Nexus will charge off the USB, but the PC will not connect to it, so I can't perform any of the flashing commands. Dev options are set on the phone, ofc.
Any idea what the problem might be? I've had this same computer since the phone came out and, as I mentioned, I just used it a month ago to update the phone. No clue why the computer won't see the phone as connected.
I should note that I can't get the Device Manager to see anything connected, either, so it's not trying to update drivers or anything. Besides, I believe those are current, since everything worked a month ago.
Thanks.
MSFT issued a bunch of security patches on 10 NOV. I wonder if that screwed up something? Is anyone else having issues with Windows recognizing that the phone is connected? Neither MTP nor PTP storage mode makes a difference.
FYI, looks like the culprit. I rolled back all the system updates and now the phone is recognized. Now I just have to go one-by-one and figure out which one broke ADB...

USB Problems

Probably an old issue, but I have several Galaxys phone, all work okay with the various leads I have on the laptop I use, but.... my S7 doesn't. Standard stock rom, no mods. I've changed the developer setting, reset, rebooted, changed leads, changed laptops, changed phones... all to no avail..... No pop up, no recognition of it being a USB connection - but it charges via usb through any lead, any laptop.... just will not act as a USB device...
No changes made or happen to the laptop either - tried looking in device settings to see if it's there - nope!
Now I'm sure it used to work before Nougat update...so could this be the issue? UK Vodafone on Nougat 7.0.. any advice would be welcome!

Oneplus 6 not connecting to Android Auto. Oneplus 5 works fine.

I've just had my 2016 Mazda MX5 Miata's original equipment MZD Connect head unit upgraded to run Android Auto via a USB cable.
They tested it in the workshop with a couple of different phones and it all worked fine, but, alas - not with my Oneplus 6.
I'm running Android 10 and OxygenOS 10.3.0 and I can feel the phone vibrate in my hand as it repeatedly connects and immediately disconnects again. My wife's OnePlus 5 with Android 9 and OxygenOS 9.0.9 has no problems.
I've tried different cables, but it seems clear that it's a phone issue as all the other phones seem to connect with no problems.
Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Make sure it is not in charging mode from the menu when you plug it in. Also check the USB debugging. I connected easily to a 2019 Subaru.BTW, assuming Android auto app is on phone.

I've just set the default USB configuration to File Transfer. USB debugging is Off and Android Auto is built into Android 10, I believe (so you can't install the app anymore), but I have installed Android Auto for phone screens anyway - which is what you do if you still want to see the app on your phone. Does all that seem correct?
I had many issues with android auto and my O+6. I solved it with the solution given by "johr claessens" in this post : https://support.google.com/androidauto/thread/4455995?msgid=15130627

I'm actually doing a very tentative victory dance ATM. I think I've solved the problem.
I opened the Android Auto for phone screens app, went to settings and found there were no 'Accepted Cars' and the 'Add new cars to Android Auto' was switched off. I switched that on, it then connected and added the MX-5 as an Accepted Car. And seemingly all is working fine. I'll do more tests tomorrow.
The bit that is odd, though, is that the Android Auto app is no longer required with Android 10 - it's built in and does everything automatically. If I hadn't installed that extra 'Android Auto for phone screens' I wouldn't even have access to those settings.
Also - the solution may have had to do with the steps Right2Bear suggested. Something seems to have worked. But if it all goes wrong tomorrow, I'll certainly try your suggestion, bilool. Thanks!!

Can't connect to Windows 10 PC?

For some reason I can't connect my Pixel 4a to my PC with a USB C - USB A cable (or USB A - USB C, not sure what the official name is) , even though it worked fine on my previous phone.
Included with the phone is a USB C - USB A adapter, but I see no use for it unless you have a special USB A cable which I don't.
My motherboard does have a USB C slot on it and it does read my phone when I plug it in that way but for some weird reason it's really loose and doesn't stay connected unless I keep physical pressure on it.
I'm not going to update to Android 11 until the November update because I've heard the current build has a few bugs, but does anyone know if Android 11 fixed the USB C - USB A issue?
Have you made sure to switch to file transfer mode? It defaults to 'no transfer' mode when I plug into my laptop.
Most likely you need to toggle the phone connection settings to data transfer, originally it will be set to charge only I think.

I had this issue too. Windows file explorer would just crash after one or two files and stop transfer, no matter the size and type. (Yes I had file transfer selected on my phone ?)
Then windows update gave me a driver called "Google Inc. - Other Hardware - Kedacom KDB Composite Interface". I also updated to the newest firmware on the phone. No idea which of these did the trick or if it was the combo. However. Smooth sailing now ??
Hope this helps
(If windows update refuses to give you the driver, you can get it from Microsoft's update catalogue online. A Google search will do)
Ok it's completely messed up. When I search for USB settings it doesn't let me change anything at all, even though when I first got the phone I could and I changed it to transfer files. EDIT: No actually the setting that I changed was a developer option called "Default USB configuration" which I changed to transfer files but that still did nothing.
I just plugged in my phone and looked for the USB setting in the notification area but it wasn't there, but I noticed an option called "manage"
I went in there and noticed this. (see attachments) it's locked to be off and I can't change it. Very odd.

You're in notification settings. Try short tapping rather than long tapping to get the menu to pop up allowing you to select data transfer.
Changing default USB settings in developer options doesn't work for me either.

My point is that the notification that normally comes up when you plug in your phone to a computer to change to data transfer, charge only ect ect isn't even coming up because the firmware is stopping that notification from coming up altogether and I can't change it so it does.

Almost certainly a cable or host port issue. Swap cables and see what happens. Same for hosts/host ports. You're not going to have toggling options if the phone does not 'see' all expected lines/pins.
I had the same issue and changed to a different cord to fix the problem.
You have an non certified cable it seems, I've confirmed this pixel 4a works with only certain cables for usb transfer, also the usb a to c cable you have will not charge the device as well.
Get a cable from know manufacturers like Samsung, it worked for me.
Yeah turns out it was a cable. Strange how my cable worked with my old phone but not with the Pixel 4a
Had this issue with my new 4a just now. Cable was fine, even used the new cable that comes with it using a Usb C to Usb A adapter. Nothing worked. Upon opening Device Manager I found a new device called 'Kedacom USB Device'. After trying random things, I decided to uninstall the current drivers by right clicking on it and clicking 'Uninstall device'. Suddenly the phone connected, and even showed the adb prompt.
So for anyone still facing this issue, hopefully this solution might help

My S10e can't connect to PC through USB

Hi, I have a S10e T-Mobile which runs Snapdragon. When i used my phone on May security patch, the phone was okay. I can connect it to my pc without any problem. But yesterday, when i update it from May patch to September security patch then when plug it to my pc, the phone shows only charging. I even try to go to download mode and odin can't recognize the phone as well.
Yeah, yesterday on May patch i plugged my phone once and still okay til i updated my phone to lastest update. Anyone has the same problem?
Update: I changed my phone case and the phone now can connect PC and charging faster than before. Maybe the cheap phone case is the problem.
Update 2: After October patch, the problem now comes back. T-mobile forced me to install so i think after a few week the problem will be gone
Update 2022:The problem now is gone, i tried serveral update and I can't trigger the bug anymore. Thanks everyone.
If it doesn't show on Odin, you're screwed. The only way is to report and wait for an update. Have you considered doing the common steps?
Another USB cable? Another PC? OTG? Fast charging? Port clearance of any obstacles? Reboot? Wipe cache? Factory reset? Safe mode?

Yeah, i try everything like:
- Clean usb C port but it has only some dust and still can't do anything after that
- I have about 5-6 usb C cable and i only use one. The others are all new, i just buy them about 1 month ago. My redmi note 7, redmi 8A... still can connect but not my S10e
- I try other PC but it couldn't recognize my phone
- Disable fast charging but still can't connect
- Reboot, clean system cache, factory reset but nothing changes
Maybe new update just broke the ability to connect usb?
The bug may not affect me much because i use FTP and cloud services but may be for another it'll be a huge problem.

Yeah you're totally screwed. That update was definitely bugged. The only thing you can do is to file a report through Members app and wait for a hotfix.
I got a semi-new device that was working great, on One UI 3.1, but once an update came, I updated the phone, and ever since, the green tint problem showed up.
If I ever bought another Samsung phone, I'll never update it. The only exception is through custom ROMs.
Try this:
1. You basically need to perform hard reset on the phone while S10e is connected to the PC through a USB-C cable
2. To perform the hard reset press POWER + VOLUME DOWN at the same time until system shuts off
3. Now it would either reboot on its own or you would need to reboot yourself
I tried this as my phone was neither charging nor connecting to PC (error about something wrong with my phone's USB)

When i changed my phone case to a brand one, Ringke, usb now works. I just don't know why

I have the same issue on a G970F. Unfortunately the POWER + VOLUME DOWN method didn't work. Am now wondering if there's a hardware issue. My other G970F is fine. Both are running LineageOS 18.1.
