Something serious might be happening at Motorola - Moto Z Guides, News, & Discussion

I don't know if anyone else here has been following the keyboard mod, but if you haven't the developer of it has posted some fairly interesting things. I'll give a quick rundown but you can go to this link: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/keyboard-mod-a-physical-keyboard-for-the-moto-z#/comments to read all his comments.
Basically he said apparently there are huge layoffs about to happen in their mobile department. He doesn't say exactly what's happening there, but says it's very serious. When asked if it might affect the Moto Z3, he says it looks worse than that.

Then maybe the wait for Oreo will be even longer Was planning for another Moto Z phone because of the mods, but guess that might not happen then.

Well, it might be the end of the line for the Z series or the mods concept... We'll see. Unless they are in full savings mode, we still might see a Z3 with a bunch of mods. Considering that the biggest part of development is in the beginning of a project, they just might have decided to move that part to a lower cost location.

Without interesting mods, I think it will loose a significant part of its appeal for at least part of the current audience ...
Maybe if they reposition it as a solid midrange as the original Z play it will have some success...

Yup I just lost $75 on indienono on another never got to development mod.
12 months of BS and a vanishing developer who took over $50k from backers.

What does it have to do with Lenovo if I may ask?

Lenovo bought Motorola off Google.
Probably after Google ripped all the patents they needed etc.

Actually, the problem is that the MOD in question was part of transform the phone or whatever was the official name for it Challenge from Lenovo, and the same shady-ass Mod that cheated on it's users is actually featured in the second iteration of the same challenge.

That's the one!
Very very disappointing experience.
Has left a bad after taste...

They really should have partnered with Kickstarter. At least with them, if there was a promised product that didn't get delivered, Kickstarter will get you your money back.
That or brought the mod development in house.

They did jack with it and it's now permanent rootable along with the mt4g. People like to be challenged.
From a phone
It will eventually come to all but the nexus series of phones and the geeksphone, and the XDA community will find a way to disable that chip in time.
Why post an article that holds no weight to our phone? And that phone is rooted already.
This is my Captivate. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
If the phone reverts to the original software, how are they ever going to do updates?
I have a feeling that there is a way to make permanent changes. It will just take time for someone to figure it how their updates work.

Nah, I'm with you on that one. This is my 2nd bad experience with Moto, and it's like "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me."
I had a CliqXT which wasn't bad at the time and came with Eclair (2.1), we were on their timeline for the great GB update and it kept getting pushed further and further, finally after half a year of waiting Moto pulled out and said no, you're stuck on 2.1 Fortunately we weren't locked down and Turl brought us CM7.
A few phones later, here I am with the Atrix2, a completely locked down phone that leaves you at the mercy of Moto to update it and do something with it, and we all know how much you can rely on Moto to satisfy their customers. They said that they would unlock bootloaders, technically they did, but nowhere near the capacity that Moto users as a whole appreciate. It's a shame too, because their hardware is solid, but ultimately it's their loss.

I bet if they conducted the survey here on XDA, the result would be drastically different. I have a friend with the Razor, and another with an Atrix HD. My old Skyrocket, running CM10.1 nightly, with a custom kernel and radio, out performs both in almost every aspect. It's a shame that Moto would make such a potentially incredible device and then hide most of that potential behind a locked boot loader under the guise of protecting me from myself. Definitely my last Motorola device. End rant, back to work for me.lol
Brought to you by time and relative dimensions in space.

New update coming soon maybe?

Spoke with a T-Mobile tech support for the problems I was having with my phone I asked about when we could expect a software update like AT&T and Verizon got he told me between the first and 2nd week of March but take it with a grain of salt but we'll see
Please realize T-Mobile employees usually have no clue what they are talking about. I'll take that comment with the entire great salt lake...
Always depends on who you talk to. Occasionally you get that rare gem who is actually passionate about what they're talking about. Or you get someone who just tells you what you want to hear.
That said the timeline seems to be right for a March release.

Updated both my wife's and my G4 hen it came out. The down side was the whole bootloader unlock wiping the phone. I made the mistake of not backing up my contacts prior to updating a d had to restore my lollipop backup so I could back them up to my sd card and then go bacl yo Marshmallow. The other thing that I don't like is the way Marshmallow handles sd cards, fyi, there is no adoptable storage on LG/T-Mobile's version of Marshmallow and the sd card fix does not work on Marshmallow and all Titanium backups will need to be put on internal or it won't backup cause it will tell you that the backup on external sd is not writeable. Over all I liked it just switched phones cause I thought my G4 had major issues last weekend and neither me nor T-Mobile could get my phone to make or receive calls to or from my wife, daughter,. dispatcher, or my boss after 3 and a half hours of trying at a store and I had to have a working phone so I upgraded to the V10 and love it.

The key difference is that we usually have reviews (or at least hastily done hands-on previews) in hand before forking over money for other flagships. Nobody has a review on this yet.
Sure, reviews aren't perfect but they answer a LOT of the questions that we all have about this thing. Face it, Essential's communication has been pretty poor leading up to right now. And specs aren't everything.
Example: If Essential says "Our phone runs Android well and it's buttery smooth", would you trust that as much as if any other reputable reviewer said the same thing?

You're saying every flagship phone is exactly the same. Pick something with an 835 chip and everything else is identical; picture quality, battery life, screen quality, warranty support.... list goes on.
Nobody other than Essential employees know how the camera performs. You're putting a lot of weight into Andy Rubin's name being involved and he really has done nothing to earn that weight, in my opinion.
I'm not getting rid of my Pixel XL just yet. If the Essential sucks (I really don't think it will), it just goes on Swappa, I keep using the XL and wait for the new one to come out. I can honestly say that I haven't been as excited about a phone release as I am about the Essential in a long, long, time. The screen real estate is absolutely beautiful.

15 day return policy
I'm all in. As other's noted, 15-day return policy. If it sucks, it goes back.
Hardware wise I think it will perform, and I think android will operate fine. Just my belief based on who's doing this thing.
My only hesitation before pulling the trigger was how long it will take to have developers putting a rom together that I can abandoned all tings Google. I'm currently on a Nexus 6p with no GApps, running a secured kernel and ROM, FDroid, Amazon, and side loading for apps. I want to get to the same place on this sucker. I'm not developer enough to make my own ROM. Though the idea of building from source seems like a fun challenge.
I think my biggest hesitation is in how they worded the return policy. "Disabling security features" warrants denied return. I wonder if this means the device will be permanently altered by unlocking the bootloader - eg.. Sony with wiping the TA partition permanently degrading photo quality, or Samsung and the knox crap.
Obviously I wouldn't unlock the bootloader in the 15 day return window - but I want to be able to unlock the bootloader at SOME point with the option to put it back to stock without marring the device.
So many questions, so few answers..

And the sub-companies under playground global are not exactly super successful.
I wouldn't say his name brings a whole lot to the table
Bought mine today. Ships within a week w/ 2-3 day Fedex; i'm hoping for delivery by Fri 25th, but i haven't gotten that email yet. No cases for it... hmm. I think they might be taking the durability factor a little far for there to be no cases available at launch. But I for one think Rubin's name brings a lot to the table and will be very surprised if the phone he's essentially (ha) staking his career on is a flop.

Yeah I broke down and confirmed my reserved pre-order. If I hate it, I'll return it. A good 7-10 days of steady use should determine if it's a keeper. I think selling on swappa is not the way to go as I believe initial resale value will be low unless reviews are overwhelmingly positive. Time will tell!

Exactly, I don't understand why people are all up and arms about the monthly being late. Are you in a rush for something? If you have ants in your pants and itching to update something, just reflash your current version to curb your addiction. Everyone needs to relax and stop opening meaningless threads. Be patient and just wait for the update to come out.
Well, maybe because one of the reason they bought the phone is that it should be the first to get each monthly security update. It's google update for google products after all.
Turned out, this month, my S23U is getting update faster than my P7P.
Am not itching or b*tching about update. I just find it funny that google is lagging behind in an area where they should actually excel. Not to mention they only have less than 20 phone models in their portofolio to manage as well. Lol

Probably the same reason people talk about Pixel in Samsung forums. Justify a purchase, feel the need to lord it over if something is presumed better on one, really like their phone and want to convince others to like them too, tribalism, cult status.. all kinds of things. I just take it as entertainment on a Sunday morning. I do like the size specs on the S23 mini but then again it's a Sammy so...
As for the topic at hand I think if Google at least gave a reason for the delay that would appease many folks but that doesn't seem to be forthcoming. There are always little bugs we're hoping to squash with each monthly and maybe that's why everyone is wondering when. Even the columnists at AP and 9to5 are wondering and mashing the update button so for people to say just wait, what's the big deal, cool your jets etc. it is a little disingenuous.

Even the columnists at AP and 9to5 are wondering and mashing the update button so for people to say just wait, what's the big deal, cool your jets etc. it is a little disingenuous.

the one big important thing against Sammy is Knox and Warranty lose when bootloader unlock. You w8 big part of new product because you want to keep warranty.
Unrelated to the update scenarios, I'll say this...I had the pixel 5 and swapped to a Samsung note 20 ultra which I used until getting the p7p. If I'm honest, the note has a way more premium feel to it, holding it, looking at it, using it blows the p7p out of the water. I've been swapping back and forth between the 2 and even at 3 cycles old the Samsung holds it's own.
