I'm very new to the process of modifying android/firmware/rooting/etc... I want to regain FoxFi (wifi tether) functionality on my Verizon HTC One M8, which was lost with Lollipop. I had been fighting the update for months but it forced itself on me a few weeks ago. I believe my only real option is downgrading to Kit Kat.
I have a long post typed up with my plethora of questions after browsing around a number of forums and blogs the last few weeks, but there are so many basic terms, commands and things I don't understand... I figured it might make things go smoother if I just ask my stupid questions first and then proceed. Plus, I'm an engineer and am generally good with technology, and have wanted to pick up the skills needed to do software version changes/rooting etc for years now. I'll keep the other post typed up (took a while), but won't send it until I get some feedback here... so as to avoid undue spam and clutter.
So, with that all said, dumb question time. Please be kind, lol. Note - if there is an entry level video/picture-laden tutorial that will likely explain all of this, please point me that way and I'll get up to speed as much as i can on my own. There seem to be many tutorials out there but almost all of the One M8 ones seem to have lots of terminology in them I don't get ,yet:
1) What is an RUU?
2) What is the CID? (appears to just be a build # or software version associated with new updates)
3) What is the fastboot folder? What is "hboot"
4) Whats an ADSP?
5) Which SDK/Sync manager will I need on my PC? I have the basic HTC Sync manager (some links suggest its needed)
More questions as they occur to me, thanks all!
Well, hate to burst your bubble, but even after understanding all of these terms you can't downgrade to kit kat after taking the lollipop update. On Verizon htc ones, all system partitions/folders/files are write protected and cannot be modified with fastboot or RUU's in order to downgrade. As of right now, the only way to remove the write protection on lollipop is with an HTC Java card (this process / state is called s-off). Several people on xda have them and might help you out, particularly dottat.
Sorry for ignoring the main question here, I'm just offering what I know and I'll leave the explaining to someone a bit more knowledgeable with htc stuff to answer those questions. (I'm stuck in the same "lollipop lockdown" boat as you)

Appreciated, no worries!
I had noticed dottat was a prominent figure in many of the downgrade threads, so perhaps I'll try to reach out to him directly.

For the time being, check the post here. Working solution
Apparently someone successfully rooted verizon htc one m8
Link to steps
You can downgrade back to 4.4.4 as long as you are S-off. It takes some patience to root and get sunshine to S-off. Just make sure you do not try to run an RUU (Rom Update Utility) of an earlier version if you are still S-ON. I would say that if you just want to wifi tether, S-off your phone, flash a recovery, then just flash a 5.1 Rom that has wifi tether working out of the box.

So the order of operations is:
1) disable fastboot
2) root
3) unlock bootloader
4) go s-off
5) use RUU
?
As far as what i'm looking for... with Lollipop, tethering itself works, but they make you go through the verizon service (whereas past Android versions could be bypassed with some certificate trickery, which is what Foxfi did), and I don't want to pay $30/mo for something i was getting for free the last 3 years. I also want to root the phone for a few other applications.
I'm not sure what 5.1 Roms would support FoxFi on this phone out of the box (i've heard Samsung's Galaxy S6 continues to support foxfi with verizon and Lollipop, but i'm not sure i could use that rom), which is why 4.4.4 might be easier.
Questions:
1) Is the above order right?
2) Can you disable fastboot with Lollipop? I didn't see the option when i tried.. and i'm seeing some places online saying you can't. What then?
3) I downloaded ADB.. how to you get a command prompt up when connected to the one that lets you send commands to it? Seems basic but ADB has a milllion settings.
4) What else am i forgetting?
Just trying to figure out the first steps... its easy for a newbie to get buried in walkthroughs and new terms. Thanks again!

When it comes time to flash a ROM, I'd humbly suggest CleanROM. It's stock ROM with the Verizon bloatware removed, and it's already rooted for your convenience. Like you, my primary reason for installing a custom ROM was to be able to use my phone as a hotspot. (Verizon will have to pry my unlimited data plan from my cold, dead hands.) CleanROM's native tethering app works out of the box, so there's no need to even install a third-part app like FoxFi. Sadly, it appears that the developer is no longer supporting this ROM, but it's suiting my needs for the time being.
Anyway, I just purchased a used M8 running stock Lollipop last week and here's what I did:
1. Followed the directions here to achieve s-off. (There's nothing in these directions about disabling fastboot.)
2. RUU (because the phone was used and I have no idea what the previous owner did to this thing and I want to start fresh); I followed dodtat's instructions for Option 1, plopped the 0P6BIMG.zip file on my SD card, and let the phone do the rest.
3. Installed a custom recovery (the latest version of TWRP - installation instructions are on the linked page)
4. Installed CleanROM via TWRP
5. Enjoyed free tethering
Good luck!

Not sure about foxfi but with the stock Verizon app.

Just to be clear... the 3rd step (of 21) in that first link you show is "RUU". Does this mean I should do it twice (and if so.. with different versions?), or will one RUU do it?
Sounds like his method to achieving S-off is just a series of checking the right buttons within a factory reset phone. Is that right?

Hmm, really? Interesting. Stock verizon app works fine, only used foxfi because in the past its met my needs.
Quick question... I've downloaded the java developer kit, ADB, and Android Studio. How do I verify they're working when i connect the phone? Is there a way to send a harmless ping/command/etc to the phone to check?
Few more questions regarding the s-off instructions:
1. Just did a factory reset. Also deleted everything on the SD card. Questions
a) Is a straight delete on the sd card ok or do i need to format? IF the latter, what do i format to?
b) How to I check the 'status' of the bootloader? Is that in one of the hard reset/fastboot menus? Or can i just let the thing start up and check it in the system menu somewhere?
2)
And if I do option 1, as you did... its the file here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934537709
that i rename 0P6BIMG.zip
right?
3) Both kingroot and TWRP seem like they can be downloaded to the phone after the fact. And both seem fairly straight forward. Do I need to do anything else for them to work?
4) Lastly... I believe i can do this all with the SIM card out? (seems like perhaps that is ideal, actually)
Just followed quite the droid root alice in wonderland rabbit hole...
Found some old S-off procedures but they appear to be defunct, which led me back to the 'sunshine' s-off approach you listed.
I followed the sunshine approach listed (the one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61920423&postcount=3652)
and get to:
File Manager App -> Install KingRoot (accept google checking apps)
Open KingRoot - Hit Root (read notes section at this point) and repeat until it says you have it in this app.
Back out of KingRoot, and uninstall the P~~~ whatever app and the KingUser app it installed by dragging from the app drawer into the uninstall icon.
File Manager App -> Install the SuperSU posted

Kingroot is installed, but reports "root is not available" (ostensibly because security is still on). So I still don't know how to turn S-oFF. I'm also not sure what the "P~~~~~ whatever" app he refers to is.
Help appreciated Phone not bricked yet

I didn't RUU twice. I just did a factory reset before following the s-off instructions. You actually have to be s-off before using the specific RUU that I linked to.

No, that's the wrong file. Use that standalone zip if you want to RUU, but you have to be s-off before using the standalone zip that dodtat posted.

Keep trying to get root with Kingroot. It will eventually work, but it takes time and patience. And Purity is the name of the app that Kingroot will install after it gains root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61920423&postcount=3652 - this is the s-off instruction right?
Kingroot is part of those instructions... do I need to root before using sunshine? And is sunshine what finally achieves the s-off?
Will kingroot work prior to achieving s-off? (seems like it would have to given the instructions in the link above.. given enough tries). My first attempt using kingroot said root wasn't available, but the link above suggests I may need to just keep trying / uninstall+reinstall / etc to get it to work.
Thanks again!
Ok... some progress!
After 4 tries, Kingroot finally did its thing and reports I'm rooted.
In the link to achieve S-off, the app Sunshine is mentioned. Just bought a sunshine license for $25... why not.
Or not.
Despite Kingroot saying its rooted and Sunshine initially saying it had gained root and that my phone had passed all the pre-tests, now that i've spent the $25 its saying its "Unable to gain root access to your device. You may need to gain "TEmpRoot" or "PermRoot" through some other means. For HTC devices, unlocking with HTCDev.comand rooting with a custom recovery may work."
Grr. Any ideas?
I have an HTCDev account but when I get to step 5 in the unlocking bootloader process, I haven't been able to get my command propt commands to work. See images below...
By re-rooting with Kingroot Sunshine did its thing... after it finished the app disappeared. When I do a Volume down+power, it does show my software status as "modified", so I guess I'm making progress.
So is now when I put the said 0P6BIMG.zip on the sd card and let the phone find it? And as specific as we can be as to which file this needs to be is appreciated... thanks
lol so I re-rooted (again) and re-downloaded sunishine (because, like i said, after it did its thing it deleted itself), and its confirmed I'm S-Off.
I'm downloading dottat's "DOTTAT_VZWM8_S_OFF_5.0.1_RUU.zip", which is about 1.6GB. This is what I put on the SDcard, rename 0P6BIMG.zip, and 'flash' that right?
Appreciate you bearing with me (though it seems like i'm in a closet talking to myself a bit, which is ok)
Make sure the BIMG.zip is in the root of your sd card (in no folder) then load hboot and it'll detect the .zip and flash from there. Yes.
Are there any custom recoveries for this device? It seems to be identical to the LG Leon minus the 4G connection.
Would this device run an LG Leon rom or recovery?
I wouldn't hold my breath for it since it's a device so unknown even GSMArena and PhoneArena don't have it in their databases. I guess you could backup your /system partition using ADB so if you break something, you can always restore it because as far as I know, LG's phones have ADB enabled in their stock recovery. Keep in mind that you'd need root for this, you could probably root it with tools listed here.
Devices may seem very similar when you just look at the specs but they can be different in terms of hardware used inside, hardware such as the radio, accelerometer, the keys - all of those can be connected differently to the chipset making the ROM cross-flashing a lot more difficult. One example of this is the LG Optimus L7 II and Huawei Y300, both have the same specs but ROM's don't work on one another.
I've already rooted with kingroot and swapped it all over to SuperSU...I wonder how hard it would be to build a rom for it myself... But that still leaves me with no custom recovery.
I suppose I'll back it up and mess around with it
[edit] this phone doesn't like adb too much... Won't show up at all on linux nor windows... Tried multiple sets of drivers... This phone seems like it was made strictly for basic use
How did you get rid of Kingroot and SuperSU installed? I cant seem to get rid of kingroot at all.
As far as ADB, this phone has to be in PTP.

Super sume its on the app store last i checked they wanted like 4 bucks for it but i used lucky patchers modded play store n was able to immediately refund my purchase while still allowing super sume to do its job. It basically does all the work removes kingroot/kingoroot app does sum sorta binary magic or wutever n adds supersu all u gotta do is update the supersu binarys wen super sumes finished doin its thing. Was gunna post a link to super-sume pro on the play store but i guess im too new n xda dont trust me yet lol
So I finally pulled the trigger and ordered a G930F. Sorry for the noob question, but when it arrives, what should I do with it and in what order? End goal would be to be able to install custom roms easily when new roms are released.
I was thinking:
1. Flash new firmware
2. Enable OEM unlock from settings
3. Disable auto updates
4. Flash recovery TWRP
5. Wipe data
6. Root
7. Setup phone
Thoughts?
Also for the firmware, I'm going to be using this on US T-mobile. Should I do UK firmware or German T-Mobile?
Thanks
Any suggestions guys?
Sorry if this question sounds stupid. I've had my current phone (HTC One M7) for 3 years now and it's at a state where I can just flash a new rom whenever I want. It's been a long time since I did the initial setup of unlocking, installing the custom recovery and initial rooting that I can't really remember what I did and what order they have to be done. I just want to make sure I don't do them in the wrong order and have to redo any of the previous steps again.
Thanks

I love root as well, but the S7 is so good, really doesn't require root at this point. If root is what you desire, you can look in the S7 forums, and they should walk you through what you should do, but your set-up doesn't seem bad. I still suggest sticking to the S7 at least for a week and see if you really need root. With Samsung's Theme store, launchers, and etc, besides removing bloat, having exposed and etc, not sure why its important to root at least at this point.
I'm not clear on whether the bootloader on the 930F can be unlocked; you might want to check on that first.
In terms of root, I still use Xposed and Titanium Backup. Yes, you can already hide the quick-connect icon, but the brightness slider is locked on there (SQL Editor needed to get rid of it, another root app). You can also use the fun features of root - I use Tasker to turn NFC on only for those apps that need it and turn it off when I don't, use Keepass2Android's automatic keyboard switching, etc.). I rooted mine within the first hour of having the phone home and turned on. The phone still isn't perfect, and honestly still not as flexible as many of us would like, but it's not a do or die situation anymore either.

awesome sounds like the kind of setup I would do, thanks
but the order of what I'm planning on doing is correct though, right? If I'm understanding them correctly, I need to do firmware before root since firmware flash would get me back to root-less stock I think. I need to do root right after twrp and data wipe because of that boot loop issue they described in the twrp thread. so firmware first, twrp second, then root third?

Seems right. Plug your SIM in first by the way; the phone does a wipe when it gets a sim for the first time (not sure about thereafter; don't have a second sim to test with). But yes, your process is essentially what I did.
Has anyone found root for this device? I've used kingroot and it works to a certain extent but I was wondering if anyone achieved full working root. Also, has anyone unlocked the bootloader yet?
You can unlock the boot loader with the adb command "fastboot oem unlock" but first you have to enable oem under developer options
I foolishly updated to 6.0.1, if there is or soon will be root of it, I don't think i'll be getting it.
As much of an improvement this phone is over the last GSM model, it's honestly marginally so, and I feel it's googles fault.
The System takes up about 9gbs of storage, which wouldn't be a problem if any apps could be moved to the SD card, unlike in the previous version or in 6.0... no app can be moved to the SD card. Stylo's system took up 5-6gbs of the 8 given, there's a lot more space left over but I don't understand how LG managed to take up an additional 3 gbs of space between versions. There are some new features to the 2, but there's a lot of features missing from the 2... so why is the system more bnloated?
Lg Stylo 2 System Data
On my phone, there is only 5.88 GB taken up by the system as shown by 'storage' in settings. But Storage Space shows it as only 4.12 gb. I'm not sure why yours is so much more than mine but that could be because you are using Boost Mobile and I have Virgin Mobile and they have more bloatware or something? And I dumbly updated the system as well. I am not going to try and root it yet, but I probably will in the future once more people have this phone.
Attached is photos of my storage usage:
Ok I want to volunteer my Stylos 2 (Boost) for experimentation purposes. Where do I sign up? Lol

maybe put a post up in the android software and hacking [delopers only] section here http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software-hacking im sure there has to be some developer out there that would like to get there hand on stylo 2 in exchange for developing for it. spread the word im willing to throw in $20 bucks for a root and $40 for a bootloader unlock and $20 for a custom recovery. im only able to get temp root with kingroot v.4.85 it works good i was able to remove all the bloatware put in busybox and can even soft reboot without losing root.I guess there is a tool that has already unlocked the sprint variants bootloader its called GcProKey but i looked it up this thing is like $150 though.

To both, a common method on other phones with problems losing root on reboot is to
Code:
rename or delete /system/recovery-from-boot.p
I'd recommend a simple rename to keep the file intact.
Of course to do this requires a file explorer with root, it also changes a system file, so do this at your own risk. I am curious to see if this solves the problems.

yes i did infact try that method i was able to access that file with root explorer on temp root still no luck with root on reboot, i actually had this phone for like a week and already bricked it i had to send it in to LG to get repaired i was messing around with **** and changed some permissions on system files not aware until afterwards that this could affect boot i could have fixed it if LG would be a little quicker posting there firmware for newer released devices but anyway learned my lesson i guess ill just leave the rooting to the pros. But i also read about another method i will try when i get my phone back since it already gives temp root i read that using a benchmark app such as AnTuTu running it until it gets to about 10% then opening up KingRoot and try rooting supposedly overloading the ram while trying to root has been shown to more likely root also it could take more tries then just one.

I'd recommend a simple rename to keep the file intact.
Of course to do this requires a file explorer with root, it also changes a system file, so do this at your own risk. I am curious to see if this solves the problems.

Im going to try this on the metro variant ill let you know i have my old Stylo to fall back on. Just give sometime to set up
LGMS550 Stylo 2
I'm going to attempt root today on the Metro variant. I can confirm the old LG B2C App reads this phone just fine so recovery should "NOT" be a problem, ALTHOUGH the phone is not listed on the app or on LG's website when I registered it, (LGMS550). I'm Just going to make a recovery (Backup) BEFORE I try this. I will let you know. If anyone knows if TWRP has or has plans for a recovery please let me know. DO NOT TRY THIS, My phone my money so it's on me.
Stylo 2 root
So far so good.
Backup is done.
For your info:
LG drivers for Windows (I'm using Windows 10 Pro. Should not matter if your using Home edition) are the same as Stylo 1 (v 4.0.4)
I have adb and fastboot installed system wide (ADB 15 second installer). Both adb and fastboot see the device with no problems. (adb devices, fastboot devices).
reboots into bootloader with no problems. (OEM unlock and debug mode are both enabled).
both the drivers and adb installer are easily found on this site. here goes nothing.
Any updates to this before I test my Metro variant?
Any luck I just got this phone love to get root I know of a good Dev to get some nice Roms done up
No luck yet. If there were some you would see it here. If you have Devs that will do nice roms for you, see if any of them can root or build TWRP for you.
i just received my lg stylo 2 back from LG after bricking it, I dont know what they did to it besides fix it because now i cant even get temp root anymore so i would just say if there is any firmware updates do not intall them just incase. At least with temp root i could get rid of the bloat but now im stuck with it.

Does the stylo 2 have its own forum here? I couldn't find it, if so could someone share a link?
No respond about the link I see.

Does no one have this phone yet or is it too early to have root

I've already posted about my phone on forum requests thread, but I don't think it could result in anything considering that its not a very popular model (Micromax Evok Power - Q4260).
Its a MediaTEK SoC device (MT6737) with 2GB RAM and Crotex-A53 processor. There are no reliable updates by the vendor (Micromax) and the phone is riddled with ad notifications in the default state. One of first thing I'd like to do is root the phone and get rid of the ads. Since its Android M, I came to know after long-pressing the ad notifications that its the system update app itself which is showing these ads, so any "update" it might provide is obviously going to be unreliable!
I'm not interested in a N update anytime soon, but just want to root the phone, so I can get rid of ads and do some advanced things that I want to do (like installing droidwall, busybox, xposed modules, etc.). So, what's the best approach that I could take in order to root this phone?

Have you tried king root for root ? Also try and find a device with similar hardware as it should be possible to port any custom recoveries or roms

Since it's an unlisted device the Android Q&A section might be worth asking about this, However it doesn't mean you'll get results either.
Any news about this?

Can you please explain the rooting process for this phone? I've been unable to even root yet.
However, for changing the UI, you don't need rooting. You can install any of the Launcher apps from play store such as Nova Launcher or the Google Now Launcher.

I used the magisk manager and a pre-patched boot.img file to root it ..
1) install adb tools and connect your micromax q4260
2)Then copy and paste this boot.img to adb folder(make sure you've installed drivers for your device and unlocked bootloader)
3) type the following commands in adb command window
"adb reboot bootloader"
"fastboot devices" (if your device is listed then you're good to go)
"fastboot flash boot boot.img" (make sure you've to put the boot.img file in the adb folder itself!)
"fastboot reboot"
4) Then make sure that you've installed magisk manager on your phone before all these processes.
5) After rebooting you will get your phone rooted..
NOTE:--I can't post outside links as i am new to xda....so i can't give you the download links..You can use XN Rootkit too to get a patched boot.img
