I already can and do disable auto updates of apps and system so I can choose when/if to do them BUT VZW let me know that updates can be mandated by the FCC and get forced on owners regardless of phone settings.
I assume that if we can find out the url these updates come from then any app can add a false ip (1.2.3.4) to that domain/address but the question is:
Where do these updates come from?
I don't mind doing updates but I can't afford to have issues with an update that did not go well while on the road for work and I as the phone owner should have the choice to update or not. Unless the FCC wants to start cutting out their taxes or paying for the phones - HANDS OFF.
On a side note can we start a "hand off my phone" movement to petition the FCC to stop all mandatory changes to any phone?

My girl has a Bionic on VZW and a Nexus 7 Tablet. I installed FoxFi on the Bionic to hotspot for the Nexus 7. Thing is, after we were done and shut down FoxFi, all of the prior networks she had visited on the Bionic are now on the Nexus 7, passwords included. We didn't realize until she came to my house and the Nexus 7 automatically jumped on my network bypassing all security encryption when it had never been set up to gain access.
This raises the question that if someone jumps on your hotspot even if just for a second, can they potentially have access to every network you have saved in the past? Since there is no way to distiguish who is the actual owner of a device this can mean the casual aquaintance that asks to use your wifi really quick to check his email, or the friend you used to have, or the guy who jumps on your connection because you forgot to require a password, all now have unrestricted access to all of your systems you have ever been on.
Maybe I'm missing something but there is no toggle that I can see to turn this off and it seems to be a very major security hole. I understand the convenience factor but it should be able to be shut off to avoid information falling into the wrong hands. Anyone else notice this?
Hmm, I'll have to try it...
Either way, I never never share any network, mobile or not, with someone I dont know or trust.
Yea I'd be interested to know if it's device specific or a software feature. I do my best as well to protect my networks which is why I think software that gratuitously copies login credentials without consent are dangerous. Granted if you are just using it for your own secured device it is a nice feature I just want the option. Let me know what you find.
Will be interesting to see what comes of this.
Hi all,
I've looked on IFTTT, but I can't find what I need. Maybe someone can help. I work on a cruise ship and sometimes when I leave a port my phone switches from the country carrier (AT&T, which is free on my monthly contract plan) to 'CELLULAR AT SEA' which is a satellite service and costs a fortune. In one day I ran up a bill of £22.00 from the phone just sitting in my pocket. I'd love to find done way of saying 'if carrier = Cellular at sea then switch off mobile data'. Maybe this can't be done without root access. Any thoughts or suggestions? I'd gladly make a paypal donation to someone's favourite charity if there's anyone who could help me.
Hi,
I'm bumping my own post, because I'm SURE my problem has a solution. I'm sure someone at XDA can help! My phone knows which carrier it's connected to, so somewhere there's a software variable which equals the name of that carrier. It must therefore be possible to toggle an existing switch (in my case it would be Airplane on) based on the status of that variable.
Come on guys, someone must know how to do this!
Yours hopefully,
Miles
Have you tried automate or tasker. you can set it on location or cell towers in sure of it. that would solve your problem
Off the top of my head, it needs to be rooted in my opinion. It's worth doing if it coincides with your job?
This is something that could be configured from within the CSC file.
There's actually an app on the Play Store (again, root required) that allows you to search and change the more regularly used commands/code.
It's absolutely doable, even the carrier *could* in theory change this by way of remote update for you, which wouldn't require root.
My carrier allows me to cap my bill by not allowing any chargeable entries unless I specifically ask beforehand.
Maybe something simple, but just to be sure, you've tried manual network selection, correct?
Just a heads up to all the people who have the problem of you browsers being locked in to safe search or no adult content. I had been trying to fix this for 3 months and finally after going thru my carrier and google support also samsung in which no one could figure out how to turn off safe search. All Androids use google so I was assuming it was the problem...no!
Then I contacted my carrier (sprint/t-mobile) because google was saying it was a network issue. But the carrier (local office. Repair center and support) found no way to turn it off...
Then I contacted samsung support who in turn referred me to their local Repair center...in which the tech had found that some how the permissions on my account had been changed and was forcing network to signal all adult content to be filtered. I was astonished because sprint/ t-mobile could not find this and I had no idea even how to access this on my account...long story short. Check your carrier account permissions and make sure all blocks are off..this solved my issue for 3 months.
This is really weird, how could they change your permissions? anyway this is a very useful find, thanks!
Go to the search settings. Find the "SafeSearch filters" section. To enable SafeSearch, check the box next to "Filter explicit results". ... Enable or disable secure search Open the Google app. Click More Settings in the lower right corner. general. Next to "SafeSearch", enable or disable the switch.
Good old Safesearch settings....
The is the safe search settings were not the problem. Google, Samsung software were only doing what they're supposed to...the issue was with the Sprint/T-Mobile website settings. When you log into your account there is a profile page which controls permissions on your accounts. Some how the permissions had been changed (we suspect my account might have been hacked..changed access to it) about 3 months ago...right around the time when T-Mobile made me change Sim card on my phone from Sprint to T-Mobile. Which started the original problem I had which was I didn't have Signal at home but every where else...turns out that where I live Sprint is the only company that has a cell tower close to me so I never had a problem for years...the nearest T-Mobile tower is about 5-6 miles away...thus no Signal at home. So they put Sprint Sim back in to solve that problem. Then that's when I noticed the restrictions..after I had to go back to T-Mobile to unbrick my phone after the forced Update in October....then in November same thing after forced Update. Then again on Christmas day...a forced Update killed my internet service...again contacted Samsung and they referred me again back to the service center (UbreakitIfixit) who had to total wipe the Update and manually install the new Update and reinstall samsung phone software to get my phone working correctly...took 3 days. I'm back up and running for now...
Im keep being hacked by my genius software engineering malignant narcissistic. I've bought over 15 different phones from different carriers and used fake registration info. However, they get hack in 30 mins. I know the fontserver app was remotely downloaded Over the Air because of other apps that are installed to help that process. For ex; GNSS Air Test, Gnss Test 1.2, fused location, gnss log level setting, LAOP test. V1.93, entitlement checkservice , FOTA update, secure ui service, teeservice, dynamic syatem update, hidden menu, hidden operator, G-DEC, GCUV, etc...mobile service apps to install the spyware. From my understanding, all is needed is a phone number to where app is downloaded OTA. Here's the kicker... With every new phone I dont even setup a google acct or call anyone and it get hacked.
So please anyone share your theories or anything about this . i need to stop this bs. Theyve gang stalked me broke in my house numerous time vandalized, hacked my friends and their families threatening them with death threats and non stop harassing calls to my cell and house phones.
So i just need some kind of inkling how this can happen. Sincerely yours truly
There doesn't seem to be a Samsung Galaxy A13 5G subforum on xda, so I'll ask here. If there is, please direct me to it so I can post in the correct place.
My father's Samsung Galaxy A13 5G (T-Mobile) automatically downloads system updates, even when using cellular data. Since he only wants to pay for 1GB/mo and the updates often seem to be 500 MB - 1GB, this uses up his data without his consent. The phone was recently updated to running Samsung's skinned version of Android 13, and is mostly set up otherwise as it came from the factory.
- I did check that it was actually the software update using up all the data. At least according to the phone's mobile data usage, it is.
- I've checked the system settings and can't find a setting to turn off automatic update downloading (or any settings for system updates at all), just one to keep them from *installing* in developer options.
- Since he's not technically skilled, I won't consider rooting the phone or installing a custom ROM to fix this.
- I've shown him how to manually check for and install updates when connected to wifi, but this doesn't always help (I'm not sure whether he forgets, or whether the software just chooses to update the moment there's one available).
- Getting a different phone, from a company that doesn't think the users are idiots also isn't a good option in his case.
- Turning off mobile data when it's not in use would be equivalent to just letting system updates use up all mobile data.
Is there any other way to keep his data from being used up outside of his control?
