Why do some phones send MMS Automatically and some don´t? - General Questions and Answers

Hello, I'm a normal (not expert on rooting etc) android phone user and even after googling i couldn't solve or answer my question/issue. The past phone I had was an xperia z3 compact. This phone was able to send mms automatically (even with data off i could see the lte working for a few seconds and then the mms was sent it stopped). Now with my latest phone Lg Q6 i need to put the data on (and off) each time i want to send or recieve and mms. I checked on the Android messages app and my lg q6 has acces to my network. So i believe it should be able to also send mms automatically but it doesnt. So what is it? As i said i did some googling and i found nothing. Some people said it was the apn, and i checked, is the same info that i had before. I don't want to download any 3rd apps either. I know that i could just leave the data on but i don't want to risk it as i have a small data plan.
I contacted lg, google and Fido. Fido and google said that Lg is the one that should be able to help me with this (even if the app is from google) so i call Lg and they suggested a reboot, and factory reset. Still the same.
I have the idea is like some coding (ors something like that) on the app that doesn't allow it. After reading some forums i saw that HTC and some samsung phones also send mms automatically.
Any ideas on what else can i do?
Thanks!

Have you tries all the tips on this website: http://www.talkandroid.com/guides/beginner/how-to-automatically-receive-mms-picture-messages/
If you have and it's still not working, then I think it may be a factory problem.

SMS not working after Froyo update, please help.

Hi:
After Froyo update my texts no longer send. To me, everything appears normal, sends normally etc, but the recipient never receives them. I am receiving sms normally though.
Any thoughts? I'm desperate to get this fixed.
Thanks so much!
EDIT: MMS seem to work fine, it is only standard sms which do not work.
Anybody? Any suggestions at all would REALLY be appreciated.
Thanks again!
thats weird, mine in ok after the update. but before I update to froyo, I factory data reset my phone. did u try it?

Check the message center number, I use the aosp mms.apk so im not sure how to do it on samsung mms.apk...att has a device tutorial on their website, might be able to use it and find out...I use to work tech for att and 99% of the time if you are able to receive but not send, its the msg center number...its something like +13123149810 ..if I remember correctly (might be wrong but check)
EDIT
here try this ... http://www.wireless.att.com/answer-center/solutionDisplay.jsp?solutionId=KB115194
EDIT 2
also make sure its not the recipients fault, (problem with their network..etc..try sending a sms to yourself, and try sending to different people on different networks) ..its probably the msg center number, but just to make sure...

My wife was having a similar problem after upgrading to Froyo, but only when sending to certain contacts. Not all. We ended up noticing that some of her contacts numbers looked like +xxx-xxxx. When we added a 1 after the plus (so +1-xxx-xxxx), it started sending correctly. Kinda weird, but it worked for us. So check your numbers and maybe either remove the + or add a 1 before the area code and see if that works.
You can try taking out your SIM card, putting it onto an older ATT phone. Send the it a message and make sure you receive it , send one as well. Then put the SIM card back into the other phone. This method worked for me when I had similair issues.
Take all parentheses and dashes out of the contact numbers - 8001234567
Trust me, it will work.
If all of that fails, swap the sim card with a friend. See if texting works with his sim card. I know it sounds weird, but my daughter had a similar problem with her samsung phone. It turned out to be the sim card.
Hi Everyone:
Thanks so much for your replies. Sadly none of them seemed to do the trick for me.
I am going to try a hard reset, since nothing else seems to work. I just haven't had time to re-install everything, so I haven't done it yet.
Thanks again!
PS: If that fails, is there a way to re-flash the froyo update from AT&T, I originally flashed through Keis mini, but it will not let me do it, since I am now up to date as far as it's concerned.
Hi Again:
I just discovered that sms do send if I use Handcent, or any other 3rd party software to send them.
Is there a was to re-install the stock messaging app only?
Thanks!

Unable to send message after multiple attempts

Hi guys,
I searched the forums and haven't found anything that has any good answers or is fantastically relevant to me, so I'm making a new thread
Over the past couple of days I have not been able to send texts atall. I can receive them, I can receive and send calls aswell.
I get the error 'Unable to send message after multiple attempts', and I cannot text anyone atall.
I am using a HTC Sensation with Pyramid3D v8.2.1 XE Rom on Vodafone.
I have tried copying my APN settings to a new one and using them, I have tried re-connecting to Vodafone Contract using the Mobile network settings. I have tried deleting and re entering my contacts, and also I have tried the obvious turning off and on again.
I do not think I did anything related to the problem at the time to trigger it, only that I added a new contact after a friend sent me a text. After that point I could no longer text.
Hope that's enough info, any help is welcome!
Cheers,
Jack
It could be your rom. But have you tried to download any other sms apps from the market? Try them out, maybe they can solve the problem.

Well I have just found out that I can't even connect to the internet!
So now I can't even download a new app if I wanted.
It says I'm connected to the internet, and I have signal, but it just gives up as soon as I try to do anything online or send a text.
Just wanted to post saying what I had to do to solve the problem incase someone else has the same problem.
I had to completely reload my ROM and then load on all my my apps and data. After everything was reloaded I then had signal and internet back. I still have no idea why it happened!!
I had the same problem....
and here is what happened: my text message was too long, so it was automatically converted to a MMS. (this seems to be done when the message contains more then 765 characters!)
and not every phone is equipped to receive mms... That is when I got that error message!!
When I divided up my text into 2 parts... it worked normally again and send it !!

[Q] SMS Issues

Hey guys,
I just got my OPO today and have been loving every bit of it, but it seems that my SMS isn't working correctly. I checked the APN settings multiple times and even tried some of the preset ones with no luck. My issue is that I can both receive SMS messages as well as send and receive MMS messages, but when it comes to sending an SMS, I get a "Message note sent. Touch to retry" message. I've tried both the default app AND Google Hangouts with no luck from either. It's not a huge issue because I use mostly group chats and my gf can use hangouts, but it's still incredibly frustrating. Do you guys have any hints or tricks I should try out? I seriously love this device, but I am going crazy over the SMS issue.
I'm running the stock CM11S rooted with TWRP 64GB model on AT&T. Mobile data, LTE, everything else works. Just not actually sending SMS. I thank you for the responses ahead of time.
Hey @Bliznade.. .i see you posted about this sms issue. I am also having exact same issue now with my oneplus. Did you manage to find a solution of your issue? If yes, then can you share it with me? It is driving me crazy.
OR if anyone else can help me here?
Guys, basically you have to get the apn that is used by AT&T. Idk if you already have that apn, but the preset ones are made for the T-Mobile bands not really AT&T as I know it.

Yes, I was! It was actually Google Voice setting itself up wrong or something and after I factory reset my SMS/MMS was working fine. I turned off Google's auto-app-restore and installed only the apps I needed and one at a time, trying SMS inbetween, since I knew it HAD to be an app if it worked after a factory reset but didn't after setting up my phone. I'd say if you have Google Voice to uninstall it completely. Some setting in there messed up my phone. If you don't have Voice installed, honestly the best thing to do is factory reset and makes sure SMS is working, then install each app one at a time. I know it sounds like a lot but that's what worked for me.
If that doesn't work, this is what OnePlus's customer service had to say. It was seriously a lot of back and forth, and they were incredibly helpful, even if it didn't fix my issue, it might fix yours, so I'll post out conversation below:

I got my device today, the 64GB sandstone black, and put in my AT&T sim card. The phone worked as usual-or so I thought. My data works. 4g LTE on the wireless network, group MMS works, and I even receive SMS fine. But I'm not able to send out any SMS for some reason. I get left with a "Message not sent" notification. I tried this first with the stock app then tried Hangouts and neither worked. I checked my APN and everything seems to be correct. I'm just at a loss, as it's odd that I can receive both SMS and MMS and even send MMS but I can't send out SMS. Is there something I can do to resolve this?

Hi Jacob,
Let's try a few things to help you solve your SMS problem.
First, turn off your OnePlus One, carefully remove the SIM tray, and then power on your OnePlus One. Let it finish booting up. Obviously it will say there is no SIM inserted, cause there isn't!
Next, turn off your OnePlus One again. Carefully put the SIM tray/card back in the same way you took it out and power on again. Give your phone a few minutes to register on the network and get settled. Now, try to send an SMS, see if it works.
If we are back to square one, I'm going to have to gather a bit more info. As you probably already know, this problem is typically APN related. Are you using the PTA APN on At&t?
Would you mind downloading an SMS app called Textra (free) to see if you can send an SMS using this app please? Let me know if any of this stuff works, or not. Thanks.

Alright, I tried all of the steps you gave me and it didn't work, so I tried again waiting longer in between each step and no luck. I also tried Textra and upon hitting the send button got an immediate notification that the message failed. I realize this seems to be a very specific problem because I've searched all over the internet and I've come up with no solutions. I posted in multiple forums with just one reply from someone else with the same issue. But since putting the ticket in I've also tried inputting the correct AT&T SMSC in all 4 formats to no avail. Every time I press update and re-enter it goes back to the old, which is in fact one of the correct SMSC's for AT&T (the one in quotes) with a ,145 tailing it (not sure what that's for). But any information you need I'll be glad to provide, and I greatly appreciate your response. I've been living off of Facebook messages and group chats the last few days, haha.

Hey Jacob,
Cool, thanks for enduring a little troubleshooting and glad you understand the language of tech. Just to remove another obvious layer of doubt, please make sure you have updated to the latest version of CM via OTA. The fact that you can receive SMS messages makes this an interesting puzzle to solve.
For our next attempt, we will try something a little more drastic before I ultimately suggest a factory reset, but lets put that on the back burner for now.
Go to settings/apps and then swipe right 2 times to reach the 'All' category
For each of these apps: Phone/Messaging Storage , Messaging , Hangouts , and com.android.smspush
Perform this process: Force stop, Clear cache, Clear data
Do a restart when you are done and fire off an SMS when you are rebooted to a stable state. Any luck?

Alright, no luck with that either, so I just sucked it up and did a factory reset. I tried sending an SMS immediately after and it worked, so I thought I was good. But then after I allowed Google to install all of my old apps, I tried it again and no luck. But I did notice when Google Voice installed, CM asked me if I wanted to use Voice+ (or something along those lines) and I said yes, chose my Gmail and allowed it to access my G+ info, but after that it asked me which email to use again and wouldn't go away until I clicked out of it. Then I had to swipe the notification away, so I figured Voice might be the culprit, uninstalled and voila, working SMS.
So maybe something in the Voice settings was messing things up, or maybe the CM Voice+ thing messed it up since it worked fine on my old phone. Not sure, but I'm happy to have fixed it. Everything works great now! And even though we weren't able to fix the problem through the troubleshooting steps you provided, I realize this was a difficult and very specific and local issue.

Well I got to know the real reason behind it. It is Google voice but you don't need to uninstall it.
When you install Google install, there's an extra setting of voice+ in connection settings. (click more in connection settings to get it). If you enable voice+ which then says it'll use Google voice to send all sms from handset, then your sms won't work. If you disable it, then sms work fine just as before.
So no factory reset or uninstall of Google voice is required. Uninstall of Google voice worked bcoz it removes that voice+ setting as well.

Parvinder25: Could you perhaps elaborate on exactly where these "connection settings" are located? I could not find them anywhere within the Google Voice app. I'd like to keep using GV for its visual voicemail feature, however it seems to completely disable my ability to send MMS messages (although they do send after GV is uninstalled). I've located a toggle to receive text messages either within google or through the messaging app, however the messaging app was already selected. That would be the only toggle I could locate within GV that remotely relates to messaging. Thanks in advance.
Hello Parvinder,
It was glad that you have resolved this issue, i am also facing similar issue with my One Plus One mobile - MESSAGING. I am using AT&T network. I couldn't fine Google Voice+ in the apps or settings. I can just see Google Voice but, i am not able to find which setting needs to be disabled or Uninstalled? Could you please provide exact navigation for the same would be great help for me and other users on this blog.
Appreciate your help.
Thanks,

mms messages

ok 1st allow me to say that i looked briefly through some other threads and have done some searching on google and still have a major problem. i cannot send nor receive any mms format messages at all. (whether simple data messages or pics. nether will download or send) i made note of the fact that there is a port that sends and receives these message types however i have no idea how to check if that port may have been closed at some point, i have my phone rooted however am not sure if something that i may have messed with could be a result of this. when the phone was new i had no issues....lol any help would be appreciated thanks
ok upon checking settings i found that the apn settings are either wrong or not there (as in says things like "blank") tried using an app named "apn manager" used a tutorial i found here on the forums for how to install and use (using titanium pro) and i cant get it work =/ again thanks for any help

NO connectivity even after factory reboot. Big problem, need help!

Sprint Samsung Galaxy S6 G920P.02
Android 5.1.1
Rooted, No ROMS
I am very, VERY confused. This makes absolutely no sense to me. I believe my phone is just fried but I will find out when I take it into the sprint store tomorrow. I will most likely get a new/replacement phone but they will have no idea what caused the problem and I need to figure out how this happened so it won't happen again. I'm also very curious as I don't understand at all.
The problem: It started with me not being able to connect to the internet on ANY of my apps. No crashes or anything, just no connectivity to the internet. Calls and SMS still worked like normal. After calling sprint support they told me dial ##72786#, which then just simply broke calls and SMS. Now NOTHING works.
What caused the problem: This is where I am most confused. I was trying to setup a VPN (purevpn, to be exact) on my Xbox One. In the process of this, I was modifying my router settings on my Windows 8 PC, plugged in a 2nd router, and constantly turned the wifi off and on. I was using my phone to test if the wifi was still working. (e.g. going to google.com on firefox or launching clash of clans...literally that was it) The only thing that I can think may have messed it up was a step in settings up the VPN. On my computer, after I installed the purevpn software I located myself to "Network and Sharing Center", then clicked "Adapter Settings", then clicked on "Pure VPN", then "Sharing", then checked the box "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection", and lastly from the drop down menu, selected "Local Area Network." This allowed all devices on my network to use the VPN. Somehow this messed up my phone that hard?
See image below for clarification:
i.imgur DOT COM /cnAmC6h DOT PNG
Steps I have taken to fix this: I tried rebooting my times a million times. Then I cleared DNS cache in firefox and tried to connect. Then I tried hard rebooting my phone to flush DNS cache. Then I called sprint support, who told me dial ##72786#. After dialing this, calling and SMS DO NOT WORK. "Hands free activation" starting running after dialing that number and fails to work everytime. When I wasn't able to call the phone rep back, I used the sprint online chat support. I told the online rep what happened, and they assured me the only way to fix this was to factory reset my phone. As frustrated as I was, I did it. After the factory reboot, my phone STILL CAN'T CONNECT TO ****. Exactly how it was before the reboot, except I lost all of my stuff. I have done countless google searches and am clueless and need help.
Google will push all your stuff back to the phone after you log into your account. But you'll need the internet for that.
How did you get root?

I really don't remember, It was months ago. I paid $30 for it though and have never had issues with it.
Just brought it into a sprint tech store and they fixed by putting in a fresh sim card, reseting the phone, cache, dns, and everything they could reset. After that did not work they flashed an updated version of my phones software on the phone, which removed the root , and fixed the issue.
I explained what I did to all of the employees in the store (I was the only one there) and they were all as clueless as me.
Does anyone know what could have possibly caused this?
