Need a Pixel 2+ - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

I love my Pixel 2, but really wish it had a bigger battery.
Ideally I would like a Pixel 2 with a 4000 mAh battery. I would be fine with with it being thicker and heavier.
I won't go to a "XL" because that phone is way too tall and won't fit nicely in pockets and some phone holders. I found that first hand on my Pixel 1 XL and Galaxy S8+.
Oh well, 1st world problems I guess.

The battery on my pixel 2 last extremely long. Is yours not lasting long enough? My previous phone was a rooted S4 and the battery didn't last 1/2 as long.

Pixel 2 now, or wait for Pixel 3 (my phone is dead)

I'm trying to decide whether to buy the Pixel 2 now, or wait for the Pixel 3.
If my current (and only) phone wasn't in such a dangerous and dire state, I'd wait a month. But the battery on my phone is so badly swollen that it has forced the case open. I'm afraid it will catch fire or explode, and I don't dare take it outside in the summer heat. I need a new phone ASAP. And I don't have a landline. This is it.
So what do you think? Are the improvements in the Pixel 3 worth the wait? Or will it just cost a lot more and probably have a lot more bugs?
Opinions please!
I have the smaller Pixel 2 and it's an amazing phone! I would try to hang in their to see what the new Pixel 3 has to offer. If you feel it isn't worth the high price the Pixel 2 will drop in price a bit making it that much more desirable soon after the new one comes out.

I saw the Pixel 3 will be a little larger. I don't need a giant phone, but a little larger is appealing.
You're right that whatever the Pixel 3 costs, the Pixel 2 will cost less after its release.
I sure hope this battery can last another month. Every time I charge it, it gets alarmingly warm.
I just googled swollen batteries, and I don't think I dare keep this another month, unfortunately. It's too dangerous.
I'm worrying that the Pixel 2 is too small. I bought a Samsung Galaxy S9 and was going to return it because the Bixby thing irritates me so much. Plus Samsung has invasive terms of service. But maybe I should just keep it, given that my old phone is basically a bomb.

get rid of it, is not worth the risk.
Get rid of swollen battery phone ASAP. Perhaps buy an Essential phone at low cost ($300). Then, decide between it, the Pixel 2, or Pixel 3. (The Pixel 2 is wonderful.)
Time to move to another device quickly...then decide on a future one!
Yeah. Boo. I'm pretty scared of the phone-turned-into-a-bomb. It's off now. I keep it on the fireplace mantle in case it decides to burst into flames.
I bought a Samsung Galaxy S9 from T-Mobile online and had it delivered overnight (since I was afraid of dying). Then today I went to a Verizon store to look at the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2XL to contrast and compare. I have 10 days to return the Galaxy S9. If it weren't for Bixby, which drives me bonkers, I might keep the S9. I kind of like it. It's quite pretty. I have to say... The display is nicer than the Pixel 2 - much brighter, better contrast. These basics matter to me because just looking at the thing is a big part of what I do with my phone. There's a lot of bloatware on the Galaxy S9, but that can be disabled.
On the other hand... I really like buying Google devices because they're pure Android and updated all the time. I have a Nexus 10 that I really like (though the hardware is so old at this point that it can't be updated past Android 5 - or maybe I have 6 on there, can't recall).
Just now I was looking at specs for the new Sony phones. I like that the displays are IPS LCD because that technology is super bright, great contrast, and has no burn-in issues (I like using my phone as a clock at night).
I have 10 days to stop waffling. lol
Who will take this dangerous phone with the swollen battery from me? I don't actually know what to do with it.
Let the battery drain and take it to a Best Buy for recycling.
If you really want a Pixel, get the Pixel 2 now, put it in a case, and baby it for a month, then trade it in through the Pixel upgrade program for the 3 if you like it better.
I love pixel 2. There is nothing in pixel 3 that would make me trade my current phone. I hate the look of that chin anyway.

Remember that "larger" means "larger diagonal" as the aspect ratio will change. Most likely the phone won't get any wider but the display will get taller and the top/bottom bezels smaller (which IMO would be an improvement). All of the rumours indicate that the smaller Pixel 3 will not have a notch like the 3 XL (a phone which seems designed to bring the whole notch concept into disrepute).

If a swollen battery is completely drained of charge, is the danger of fire or explosion gone? Like - could I then mail it somewhere??
Wait? Shouldn't you still be in warranty? Pixel 2 has 2 year warranty from Google.

Ask Me Anything on the Google Pixel 3 XL and Pixel Stand

Hello everyone,
I'm the Editor-in-Chief of the XDA Portal. I received the Pixel 3 XL in Just Black for review from Google. I also have the Pixel Stand and Pixel USB-C Earbuds.
I posted part 1 of my review here: https://www.xda-developers.com/google-pixel-3-xl-camera-software-design-pixel-stand/
Have posted a ton of little tidbits of information here: https://www.xda-developers.com/google-pixel-3-google-pixel-3-xl-minor-features/
And my announcement article also has a ton of information: https://www.xda-developers.com/google-pixel-3-google-pixel-3-xl-specs-features-pricing-availability/
But if you have any other questions, I'm happy to answer them now that the review embargo has been lifted.
How long does it take to fully charge the Pixel 3 Xl using the the stand ?

I've only tested one full charge cycle with the Pixel Stand, but it took about 2 hours and 37 minutes to go from 5% to 100% battery. About 59 minutes to go from 5% to 50%.
Does audio sound '40%' louder, as Google claims? (I know it doesn't, but is the difference appreciable?)
I visited Best Buy to try them out, but the display units are crippled, and have no internet, and no pre-loaded media, so i could not compare anything other than ringtone previews. Of course, those only play out of one speaker, so I couldnt compare at all really.
Does the 3 XL ship with 9.1 or slightly updated version of Android 9, compared to what current Pixel 2's have ? Dark mode is rumored to be coming in more stock Google apps, like the Phone, the Google Now news feed panel, etc... is that on the Pixel 3 ?

I don't know about "40%" louder, but it definitely sounded louder than the Pixel 2 XL.

It doesn't ship with Android 9.1, but it does run a newer version of Android 9 than what's in AOSP. Fun fact: when you enable "dark theme", the Google Feed (now called Discover) does seem to react to it and turn dark mode on. I believe that's new with Feed.
Hello,
Thanks for the insightful review. So given what you've seen on the pixel 3. What would you want and expect google to execute with the pixel 4?

I don't see the Pixel 4 getting rid of the notch, but I do want to see the bottom bezel mostly eliminated.
Faster wireless charging. Google came out the gate with a 10W wireless charger in the same week that Razer came out with a 15W one and Huawei is coming out with a 15W one also tomorrow.
Can't speak about battery life yet, but more mAhs can't hurt.
4GBs of RAM is starting to show its age, especially for anyone who plays mobile games. 6GBs of RAM would be a nice bump.
What do u think about the scatches on back issue? Is it really an issue or people have blown ot out of proportion?

Physically yes, they fit. They are almost identical in size.
However, the 3 has buttons in different positions, so if the case has button covers, it likely wont work too well.
Have you rooted it?

Yep, this is XDA where the first question on this page should have been "How did you root it?" Keep in mind not, if it was rooted. We shouldn't have to ask that...
Anyhow, all kidding aside, while we all figure it's a go confirmation would be nice.

Nobody has used it long enough to say if it's really an issue. I baby my devices so it's less likely to happen to me, but we'll find out once it's in the hands of the general public.

Yes, my Pixel 2 XL's Fabric Case does fit on my Pixel 3 XL. However, the volume rocker is a bit loose. Also, the position of the top microphone is different on the Pixel 3 XL and Pixel 2 XL, so you'll be blocking out one of the 3 microphones by using a Pixel 2 XL case on a Pixel 3 XL.

Unfortunately, I, and nobody else really, have used it long enough to give you an accurate estimate of the battery life. My Pixel 2 XL's battery life was decent (5-6 hours of SoT), and I don't expect worse on the Pixel 3 XL.
Thx for the info, can you keep us updated once you get more info?

I don't have numbers but battery life seems to be much less with the 3 than the 2xl. I do make it through every day without worries though. At 1st the size was kind of shocking and hard to type on but now that I'm used to it it's no problem. I appreciate the smaller size.

I agree that battery seems to drain faster than my 2XL with same/similar use. I feel like the display is much brighter, not sure if adaptive display is doing that or if the panel itself is just brighter? Could still be some software tweaks to iron out and bundle into 9.1, we'll see. I have a wireless charger on my desk at work so I just plop it down a few times throughout the day so I'm >80% when I leave work and I have no issues.
Last weekend I was laying on the couch all day Saturday and I think I had about 7 hours of SOT before battery saver turned on. I was just on reddit and playing games all day. That's pretty similar to what I could get from my P2XL.
If I get 7hr on wifi and 5.5 to 6 on lte what would I expect on the 2xl?

Just a guess, but probably around 2 hours more for both. I generally pull about 8-12 hours of SOT on my P2XL. Then again, I'm a light user with no social media or gaming :good:

I'm interested to hear folk's thoughts on this as well. I too will be making the switch from the 2XL to the 3 (should be here tomorrow!). I'm obviously not expecting similar battery life as the battery in the XL 2 is bigger ... Just curious to see what folks that made the switch think about their experience - pros, cons, any regrets, etc. TIA

I made the jump from the 2XL to a 3. The phone obviously "feels" smaller, but this is definitely the form factor I want. I have no problems with using the phone at all, in fact I think I type a little better on it for whatever reason. 2XL was my absolute limit size-wise, as it barely fit in the center console of one of my cars and had to be sideways jammed in the other to fit. I had a Nexus 6 at one point and that was just painful (bigger than the 2XL actually). Anyway, don't fear the jump to the regular 3 now that it has a slightly larger screen than the 2, plus the better screen resolution. I know in a matter of days I won't even be thinking about it because the phone is totally fine coming from the 2XL, the only difference being I won't notice the phone in my front pocket as much when I'm sitting down.

Can't decide between a Pixel 3 (at $200 off) or a Pixel 3a

I am in the market for a new phone to tide me over until the Pixel 4 comes out. I'm currently torn between the Pixel 3 which is currently $200 off or a Pixel 3a.
The 3a seems like a logical choice due to price for short-term use, but if it turns out I don't like Pixel 4 I'm learning more towards the normal Pixel 3 for long-term use due to better specs.
Do any Pixel 3 users think it's worth it at $200 off? Any feedback or thoughts would greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I've owned both. I like the 3 better. The size and form factor are almost identical. The build materials don't bother me because it goes in a case anyway.
Reasons I like the 3 better:
1.The 3 feels much faster.
2.i love wireless charging
3. The water resistance factor. I'm no longer worried about getting caught in a caught in a storm or taking pictures by the pool or in the boat
4. The true stereo speakers
Just some food for thought

Same situation here. here are my reasons to pick the 3 over the 3a:
1. The 3 feels a bit sturdier IMO, even with a case
2. The 3 has better front camera, and the wide angle lens is great for group selfies
3. Water resistance
4. The 3 is just a tiny bit smaller than the 3a.
As a tide-over, I'd probably try to get a dirt-cheap Pixel 2. Long term, the 3 over the 3a for the reasons you mentioned. Headphone jack is the only advantage of the 3a (aside from price).

Probably so. However, if it's like the one for the P2XL....it's about the size of a brick! I tested that version. While it did it's job as advertised, the device was simply huge, heavy, and didn't fit in any pocket other than my coat

the 3xl was much slimmer and useable, albeit at the expense of capacity. I never found myself needing the monster capacity that the 2xl (and other older models) had, so the 3xl was a great case for me when I knew I'd have heavy usage without access to plug in. hopefully they'll do the same thing for the Pixel 4, especially now that they don't have to worry about the fingerprint sensor
I'm rocking the ZL on my 3 xl right now. It is heavy. But it will make my 4xl feel light. I keep it on every day and love it. I did email them asking to test when available. They said they were unsure of a release at this point. I really wish they made a rigged version like they do for the iPhone.
Anyone ever used I blades? They already have one for order or pre-order.
