Editing someone else's ROM and posting it - General Questions and Answers

So I saw an user who edited other Dev's ROMs (he adds a few build.prop tweaks and some other tweaks and a custom kernel to the ROMs) and reposts them (Gives proper credits). I don't have any problems with that, just wanted to know whether it's allowed ?

It's more than likely fine as long as credit is given. If you are still unsure you can report the post so moderators can take a look.

It depends on if the person got permission to use the roms as a base. If not then, no it's not allowed.

no need to be harsh on the guy. Just because someone has the savvy to flash a rom doesnt mean they have the knowledge or confidence to remove apps. Hes sharing his version of the auraxtsense rom for those type of people and they may appreciate it.

Well Catus i`m people like them.I grew into this forum slowly...took the easiest way.Last few days i`ve felt bold enough to put S-OFF on my Desire and used ADB to change my splash screen.
The reason i did that was because of all the helpful posts in this forum.
I am totally impressed by the willingness of the experts on this forum to lend a hand to the newbies. You Sir do not impress me at all.

You berate yourself incorrectly because it looks to me you're not people like that. You've investigated and searched and researched. Zip-Roms like this compound the issue of people not bothering to do any of that.
I'm more than happy to help people. When they help themselves first. I'm sick and tired of people who can't use the search function, and asking what OJ means, or whether you can stick the Sense camera on an AOSP Rom. Not reading posts properly and thinking S-OFF is some magical system that does anything exept full R/W access. People like THAT is who that comment was directed at.

Ok Cactus i`ve you had expanded your oneliner i would have understood your grouse better.I`ve never asked for help in this forum..i`ve read and learned.
why do people argue over nothing?
if no one uses the rom then the thread will die by itself.
useless comments and 'vote to delete' do nothing.
so RELAX
I don't see peterfeter has any bad intention, he gave full credit to Neophyte.x360 and he merely shares the things he did.
While he's not a real developer who knows a lot of things, I've checked the forum rule and apparently he did nothing wrong to violate any of the rule. So I don't understand why he deserves such bashing.
If you don't like it, then ignore it, simple as that
Thx. Good job. Dont mind bored guys

Why are people bashing PeterFerter? He only has good intention to share...
He is not asking for Donation, for thanx, or for recognition
Everyone has to start from somewhere.
This qualifies as a mod, anything that's different to the original is isn't it?
Will you prepare this mod for newer version of ATS ?

bashing this guy sucks
i agree with others on this thread. dont bash this guy. what actual harm has he done. he's not made any untrue claims and if anything he's inspired untechnical people like myself to have a little delve beneath the surface. I may have a look at this rom myself and do a MOD.
This has inspired me to try some editing myself. But without luck, so if you do a zipmod, you just add or remove files from data/app/ and system/app/ ? Is that all? Been trying but I get an error everytime I try saying that a file is missing. Are there a list of files + directories that i verifys with before installing? Been searching the web for answers but I only found guides on how to make a ROM from the start.

I know its a little bit heavy, but to mod ROMs I always use
[KITCHEN][OCT. 3 '10] HTC Android Kitchen, v0.100 [Linux / Mac / Windows]
The kitchen will unzip the ROM you want to mod, you change/remove/add what you want. You can sign new apk files, zipalign the apps and create a flashable ROM.
EDIT:
And thanks to peterfeter to publish his ROM. Ignore the jealous ignorant people posting bad things in your thread. You have done a good job and it is good that you share it. I plan to release my mods soon as well. It will be a mod of an existing ROM with some special apps and settings for Japan/Softbank users.
Thanks alot BeeGee! I will try it out!

Beta testers wanted/feature request thread

Hi,
I'm going to release a new rom based on stock rom very soon. However before I release I want to send it to a small group of beta testers to ensure it doesn't have problems.
I would prefer if you know how to use logcat and know how to send me a logcat file, as well as knowing how to make nandroid backups (and restoring them where necessary ). It would also help if you can follow instructions
If you're interested, please do PM me. Include your phone model (P920 or P925) so I can keep track of phone-specific problems.
As for the feature request bit, comment on what features you would like. I will try not to deviate from the stock rom (v21D in this case) by too much, so I won't do any theming. Don't ask me to solve GC issues, I can't do that. Neither can I make ICS for us. I'm not a kernel hacker either. However, any reasonable feature request should be posted here and I'll see what I can do. Don't bet on every suggestion being included though
Good!!! i am anticipating to see your work!!! btw, i really need a function to tweak the cpu voltage to save battery as i find the battery really drain very fast!!! This is my suggestion, thankyou

I can't do that, it's kernel related and I have no experience with it. Maybe when I have time I'll try to learn.

Hi,
2 things desperately needed --
Internet Pass Through (like HTC devices so that the PC internet can be used on the O3D)
USB on the go
would love to see that in your ROM --

[Q]Who I can ask permission to post a rom if not who would belong?

Sorry if I bother, but I have a question, with the help of some users here that helped me with goodly number of questions I had and managed to visually modify a rom version is "cm7.2 rc5.5 Full" Here I was in the development forum, but I place no longer there, and not to user belonged to him, and searched here in the forum without any result, so do not know who to ask permission to post it, I could do? I have no problems with anyone here, so and preferred to ask here, maybe someone can help me once again to share my achievements
PS: Sorry for my English
could you be more clear???first tell which rom is it.......and what is the prob????
Well, this is CyanogenMod 7.2 RC 5.5 Full, can not remember which user was the post, but I think he had problems when they released the RC version 6, and therefore stopped working, the problem is not whether there is a problem if I post this rom with my modifications, really are not many but I like to share, but not who owns the rom :/ ... and if necessary ask permission to post it, but who? if not who owned the post
well thats a tough one..........his name was ankkdroid try to contact him but he is a bit angry but try he comes online mostly everyday..........
knew that this angry, some users did not reclaim more than ... I like the work you did with this rom, will try to contact him, no answer, I resign :/ Thanks for the info

Including GAPPS in custom rom builds

Hello,
Just wanted to post this so others know where and what we can do with our custom roms on XDA Developer's. It seems that some of the dev's seem to think that we are not allowed to include GAPPS in our custom roms. This is a FALSE statement. GOOGLE asked CM and others not to include them but as third party developers we were not told and have not been asked not to do so. Here is an excerpt from Forum Moderator noellenchris
"Concerning GAPPS: CM and some other were asked by google to NOT include them. But only those parties. Everyone else can include them unless asked by the owner (ie Google) to remove them.
This also means in theory that everyone with a CM kang can include GAPPS, however most people don't (which is obviously fine too)
I don't think any OEM ROM was ever forced to remove GAPPS.

[Q] ART?

I just got a Nexus % i unlocked it and rooted it asap after unboxing..
now i know its againt the rules to ask which qualifies to be the best rom etc..
but what i wish to know is many roms threads have mentioned that the respective roms are ART compatible?
can someone please explain me what it means?
does it mean that the rest run only on Dalvik!
and besides will switching to ART make the battery life any better?

Hi, All or most 4.4.x Roms are ART compatible as it is integrated in stock Rom. It could increase battery life as things require less processing steps to load (evidence needed). The main defect is apps compatibility. Here is everything you need to know about. READ

Hi,
There was a time where custom deodexed rom wasn't compatible with ART, it's why some custom roms have this "feature" (like you said) mentioned... It's more informative for me.
It can avoid also to have always some users asking for ART compatibility if it's listed in the OP of the rom (if they read the OP...) or in the title.
Take a look here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2516646, it could be useful to for the OP
EDIT: I was again too long to type
