Difficulty creating folders - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

Hi -
I have had the issue I will describe on previous Android phones, so it is not just the Pixel 2, but it happens with the P2 as well, so I thought I would post here. I often have the need to create folders in the Android filesystem. I have done this with a file manager app on the phone, and from my Windows 10 PCs while connected to the phone via USB.
My goal in creating a folder on the phone is to transfer files to the phone from the PC via USB, such as photos or video files.
Here is what happens:
When I create a folder using a file manager app, I don't see it from the PC
I can see the folder no problem on the phone
When I create the folder on the PC via the Win10 file manager, by navigating to the storage on the phone, the file manager program on the computer will almost always lock up, and will stay locked up until I disconnect the USB cable
This scenario behaves this way when I have tried it on multiple PC's, and not only on the Pixel 2 but also on my older LG G4, so like I said, it seems to be an Android thing, not a Pixel 2 thing.
Have others had this problem, and what to do about it?
Thanks.

I had something similar on my previous device (one + one) but i found the issue was the cable. It would detect fine then if i was to transfer a file it would hang.
I changed the cable and it was fine.
try wifi method via this app called AirDroid, you have to make sure your PC and phone are connected to the same wifi and you can access the phone internal storage via wifi.

USB connection hell

I don't know what to do about this sudden problem. I've had my transformer since early May with the dock. I've never had any trouble connecting to any computer via the usb cable until this past weekend. Now all of a sudden it won't even show as connected when the tablet is connected to the dock.
So I tried it directly connected to the tablet and it will connect and come up on the computer but most of the time it kicks out after a little bit or when loading the files in a folder it just gets stuck loading and will not move so I can't move files to it.
I know I can transfer files with things like dropbox, but I move files every day and don't feel like fighting with the transformer for a half hour every day to get files where I want them when under normal circumstances I can move them in seconds via usb.
I tried calling support but all I got was a bunch of BS about needing to install all the software from their site which I actually did and it didn't fix anything.
Both computers I normally use are Windows 7 64 bit machines.
Anyone run into a similar issue? Any ideas?
Thank you ahead of time.
Try enable USB debugging.
Go to Settings --> Applications --> Development --> Check box for USB Debugging.
There's fews options you can (Do a backup first) try:
1) Reset to factory settings.
2) Format your microSD.
3) Re-flash the ROM.
Besides there's many ways to transfer files from Asus pad to PC.
Wireless Transfer.
FTP Transfer.
Wireless or FTP.
OP, sorry to hear about the issue. In the instances where you are able to connect via USB, if you leave it alone (don't' touch it), then can it complete the transfer? Since the Transformer uses the same connector to charge and transfer, I'm just wondering if the connector is physically getting lose or something.
When I had the transformer, I usually use the micro-SD card to transfer files. But that's just me.

Not to criticize your idea or be a jerk...but what does that mean? I don't think 1) wireless transfer and 2)FTP transfer counts as two different methods of transfer. That's like calling USB and "drag-and-drop" two different ways of transferring stuff to devices. Wireless is wireless, whether you're using a FTP protocol or just downloading using the browser.
Similar Issue
I had a similar issue when (but before) I rooted my TF. My Windows 7 64-bit machines wouldn't notice my device unless debugging was enabled and then I couldn't "safely" disconnect the device unless I disabled debugging.
I'm not quite sure what the issue is there but that is how I connect and disconnect.
Thanks for the reply. USB debugging was already turned on so I tried without it. No luck. I'm on hold with support again. If nothing comes from it I guess I will need to reformat. I never rooted so I doubt it's a rom issue.
As I was typing they said to download and install the latest firmware. I've kept this thing up to date, but I guess it's worth a try.

I got it to work one time. Every other time it just gets stuck loading the content of the folder. If I try to add anything it just sits there as it seems to be waiting for it finish loading. It's just so weird as it has worked perfectly for two months now and then all of the sudden it stopped working. I would maybe understand if there was an update or something but nothing's changed on the tablet or the computers.
I have the same issue with my usb and EVERY device. It all started when I updated the usb drivers with the nvflash certificate. Now when I want to use a usb device or my on board card reader I have to uninstall the general usb driver in the windows device manager, and for new devices. Only then will it recognize whatever I may have conected.

oh the weird usb issues I've seen. Right now my system says that it doesn't have drivers for my vibrant and yet I can connect it and access it perfectly
Try format your microSD yet? Use SD Formatter 3.0.

With wireless (using Wifi File Explorer), you just enter the asus epad (ip address) on the browser to download/upload/etc... files from your asus pad.
With FTP, you will need install ftp client on your windows to access files on your device.

Windows XP and newer versions already have an FTP client - Windows Explorer.
I use the free "Software Data Cable" app. It creates the FTP server on your Transformer, and gives you the address to type into Windows Explorer.
It works great! You can transfer files using your PC, which is a lot easier than doing it on the Transformer.
I haven't used the USB connection since!
Thanks for the replies. I think this thing needs to be rma'd. I just did a factory reset and it's still having issues. I managed to get it connected only through a direct connection and it won't even let me create a folder. It's getting a little late to do it now so I'll call asus tomorrow morning and get it started.

Is there a need for pc to "see" gt-p5113?

Sorry for noob question but I'm stumped-- If I root my galaxy tab 2, will my pc (win7 32 bit) need to "see" my tab to add movies and transfer other files?
I've--tried install/uninstall drivers, different cables, different usb ports, debugging off/on, and just about everything else--even exchanging tabs.
If I can do everything with the sd card switching between pc and tab, I will give up what seems like a futile attempt to drag and drop thru usb.
Please be kind--I've been googling and trying stuff for 4 days...
Thanks
It should work, but if it doesn't consider transferring via wireless or dropbox. The market is full of stuff like this: https://play.google.com/store/search?q=wireless+file+transfer&c=apps
Bluetooth is another option, if you have it on your PC.
And yes you could pop the card, put it in the PC and then replace it but I rarely do that.
Any favorites on the list? Thank goodness there are options...
Wireless file transfer pro is ok if you want a GUI on the PC side. If you have network shares set up try es file explorer since it does other stuff too including drop box etc

Extremely slow transfers from PC over USB & Incorrect folder views

Hey all, googling hasn't yielded me many results but I have a couple of issues:
Connect tablet from dock to PC over USB. Doesn't come up as MTP which has to be safely removed but just as a sync device if you know what I mean. Anyhoo takes ages to transfer files from PC to Internal memory of the tablet. Talking like 10 minutes for 300mb.
Second issue is it shows folders which are under other folders under the root of Transfomer 700 on PC
eg I have folders like Music/Pearl Jam/Ten
When I connect to PC it shows the Ten folder under the root folder not under Music/Ten
Weird.. on current firmware. Rooted and have USB debugging turned off when connected to PC as I find having it enabled doesn't show the device at all.
In settings/Storage have option USB computer connection set to MTP mode
Thanks

I believe what you are encountering is the infamous I/O issue. Most likely hardware limitation of the internal storage used in infinity. This may potentially improve some degree with software update, but won't be completely eliminated.
As I have not transferred file to internal storage for a long time (I like to keep internal storage clean) so this is more of a subjective opinion, but I feel like transferring to microsd on the unit (I use San Disk UHS 32GB) is actually equivalent or faster than the transferring to my iPad 2. So have you tried to copy to microSD instead of internal storage?

Same here, using a Windows PC. It's actually even so that some folders simply do not show up at all - whether they were there already or newly created. Dis- and reconnecting the cable changes nothing. Permissions are ok/equal to the folders showing. And: some folders and/or their contents I can't even copy at all, the progress window simply disappears and nothing happens. I have not found a solution yet.
Having been fed up by the fact that I simply couldn't copy the contents of my internal SD storage for backup I connected to Wifi and copied the contents that way. THAT worked amazingly fast. Yet, that of course only works if you can connect the tab via Wifi to whatever target you want to send the files to... I did so via my router. I didn't even bother to try if I could do a direct Wifi connection between the tab and my Laptop - which in theory should work too, I guess?
Can't say I've tried copying direct from PC to Tablet but I've copied a number of movies using USB and they've been pretty quick - I didn't time it or pay much attention but a couple of minutes for 1GB movie sounds about right. Hope this helps you!

[Q] Mass Storage doesn't work after OTA JB and Rootkeeper

So I finally got my phone and went through the rooting process, I have root and I'm on JB, I triple checked, but I put my Titanium backup folder on my old SD card which before updating I could access on my new phone, but now I can't seem to get to pull it up. I keep getting "Unfortunately, com.motorola.huxvmm.settings has stopped when I choose the storage option in settings. I also can't get my phone to show up as a removable drive to drop the files onto the internal memory. Besides that everything seems fine, any ideas?
USB mass storage option was removed in jelly been. It sucks.

+1 :good:
You could try one of the apk'(s even here on XDA putting a widget on and having mass storage (USBMassStorageToggle, Multi-mount-sd), but since I've lost root (sigh....) when passing the OTA, I can't tell if that actually works....
They switched to MTP mode as it is more secure (something about allowing the app storage and user storage to be the same to increase memory) and allows the device and PC to have access to the memory at the same time.

MTP is supposed to be compatible with the USB spec, but there seems to be a problem for some/lots of users: When you plug in and select MTP, the phone mounts under "Portable Devices" (not "Devices with Removable Storage") like it used to in the past. This in itself is not a big deal, but the issue seems to be that though you can navigate to "Internal Storage" in Windows--that corresponds to /storage/sdcard0 on the phone (at least, mine)--some files on your phone may not be visible on your computer.
For example, I can create a folder in Windows in Internal Storage and see it on my phone, but if I delete that folder from my phone, it doesn't "sync" that delete to the computer.
I've made sure I have the latest Motorola drivers, and tried different USB cables, etc.
The fix I use is a bit complicated, but it works for me: I downloaded Total Commander (TC) on my phone, but I suspect you can do this with any other Android software that allows you to connect to a shared folder on your computer once connected to a USB.
In my case, I did the following:
On my computer, shared the folder, C:\Temp
in TC (on my phone), used the LAN (windows Network) Plugin to connect to that shared folder
Copied files from my phone to the shared folder on my computer
Great job. I've been using total commander too. It's the best and the fastest file manager I know. It has much more functions than (known from Linux) midnight commander.
Well worth the money with plenty plugins. Download shareware version from ghisler.com
Also there is a plugin for web dav too.

Transfer from Android to Windows, deletes 3/4 (size and time length) of multimedia file (preserves 1/4)

Hello, I have a Motorola Android phone that is up to date on all updates and a relatively new Windows 11 computer. Yesterday morning I tried to transfer a multimedia file from the phone to an external hard drive connected to the computer.
The computer makes all kinds of background sounds but seemed to be working on the transfer. It did seem to speed up unusually at the end. However when I checked the file that was transferred was 1/4th the size and time length of the file that was on the phone (that phone file was about 1.2 GB) and the original file on the phone was deleted.
What happened? The file was cut from the phone and pasted to the external drive. I tried Recuva but it did not find any type of similar file on the external drive and it did not recognize the phone. I have done this type of transfer hundreds of times. The file was just created so there was no backup so I am guessing the full file is gone but it's still strange to me how this happened.
Thank you for your help.
