Canadian buys brand new US model Axon 7 mini for $109.99 - ZTE Axon 7 Mini Guides, News, & Discussion

I have the PC Mobile version of the Axon 7 mini, and I am disappointed with the lack of support for this phone. It looks like it will be stuck on stock 6.0.1 forever.
I will be visiting family in the US for a few weeks, and I don't have roaming, so I went to bestbuy.com to get a 30 day US plan. I noticed that they are clearing out the gold Axon 7 mini for $159.99, probably because ZTE is mentioned as one of the companies to avoid if you're worried about Chinese spyware. They also have a special deal of $50 off a phone if you buy a Simple Mobile SIM card for $1 and a 30 day plan for $40. A perfect storm for me, so I got the phone for $109.99 with the deal. I will pick up the phone in store when I get there to avoid shipping cost to Canada.
Hypothetically speaking, if there is spyware on this phone, would installing Lineage fix that?

In the OS? Yes.
In the firmware (which operates in parallel with the OS and regulates its ability to access certain hardware features such as the cellular radio)? There might still be some risk.

This whole spyware business is confusing to me. If there was spyware on Chinese phones, wouldn't Google or Symantec or someone/anyone have discovered it by now? Has malware become so sophisticated that it's undetectable?

The weirdly named 'TouchPal' virtual keyboard may or may not be spyware. I installed Gboard and totally disabled all Touchpal software, but various language packs, (also disabled), keep showing up as using the battery. It cannot be uninstalled without root access.
Do a google search. It is considered malware by many.

Why do carriers have to deal with the updates?

http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/ne...tm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss
This article got me thinking. Why the hell do we (e.g. - you, the US people. In Romania, EU, it's not like this) have to wait for the *carrier*, and not the OS maker (be it Microsoft or Google) to roll out an update?
Why should they be in charge, when they actually should only be a pathway between the client (phones) and services (servers which deliver content/functionality) ?
I find it very awkward and cumbersome. I could understand a situation in which customers would have to wait from the OEM (Asus, HTC, etc) to send the update. But carriers? Really?
Could be right, if not someone correct me...
The Carries sometimes make their own "ROMs" for the device. The manufactures will make the basic software updates for the specific device , then send it to the carries for them to make their own software updates. For example Verizon might update their "My-Verizon" app or so on.
Basically the carries will get the update before the end users so they can bloat it up.
or perhaps the manufacturer like HTC, LG, Samsung should take care of the updates

Well, couldn't they just update the apps through the Play store, just like every other friggin' app on any Android phone? 3-4 months delay for some crappy app that no one ever uses is absurd...
I know with my phone (Galaxy Nexus) the updates come from samsung who have to tweak it. Other devices (most in general) need to be tested to make sure that the bloatware that's on them works

Yea they can, but updating the apps itself might not be the only reason why they get to hug the update before the end-user. They could be tweaking the update before putting it OTA. Also not to forget they could also be responsible for the radio updates.
Either way, they get it before us so they can add, tweak or remove some items.
Yea, sometimes I wish we had some kind of subscription choice when you setup your phone. Like being able to choose to get updates from the carrier or the manufacture.

I'd think that the best solution would be to have each and every phone by default on AOSP Android. No modifications, no preinstalled apps, no nothing.
Then, manufacturers, carriers, whatever could let the user choose, by a setup screen that would boot the first time with the phone, what optional components they want (apps from the carriers, UI's from the manufacturers, etc) so that if I'm a Sensehead, I can have the full HTC experience if I buy an HTC phone.
But if I would prefer not seeing the piece of poo-poo that is TouchWiz, but do love the big thug of a phone that is, say, the Galaxy Note, I could go for AOSP.
Heck, sweet dreams. But I have an assumption that the carriers know the bundled apps are c-r-a-p and that any sane person would better rot in hell than use those excuses for apps.
That's my opinion, though.
ByThe carriers "own" the phones they order from the manufacturer. Yes it is absurd. They have full control, and they decide how it is locked down, what bloatware will steal your battery, and what os you are allowed to run on YOUR device.
You think you are getting "xyz manufacturer, but really you are getting a "carrier" phone unless you buy an unbranded phone and pay full retail(even though you pay full retail ultimately because you are under contract and pay every month regardless)
Yes it is a joke.
And on top of it after say "verizon" puts their hands all over a working android os, they ruin it.
This is why xda has become so big. People obviously want fast, unbloated, up to date, and bug fixed roms. When will the carriers wake up.
AND FOR THE MILLIONTH TIME:
WE DON'T WANT THE BLOCKBUSTER APP! IF WE WANT IT WE CAN INSTALL IT! EVERY BS PREINSTALLED APP THAT WE CAN'T UNINSTALL IS WASTING ELECTRICITY, THEY EAT UP BATTERY RESULTING IN HAVING TO CHARGE YOUR PHONE MORE OFTEN! GO GREEN, DUMP THE BLOATWARE ALREADY!

The problem is that many users (obviously ones who don't get on here) DO use those apps, and at the end of the day, it makes a lot of money for the carriers. It's all a money game. If all phones came AOSP, then the carriers would actually have to compete on the android market. They can't do that very well, so they require the manufacturers to let them have at the ROM before it gets into our hands.
The bloatware really ruins the Android experience. For example, look at Apple. They have a complete lockdown with regards to what extra bloatware goes onto their devices, last I checked. This leaves a great lasting impression on the consumers that end up buying Apple devices. The same consistent quality experience (of course, arguable) regardless of what carrier you use. And that's how it should be, because no one is looking specifically for a carrier experience for anything. Bloatware on Android really leaves a sour taste in the mouth. I imagine that's one of the reasons why the Nexus branding from Google exists -- to be separate from all the scummy carrier practices. And even that hasn't worked out so well, if the Verizon Galaxy Nexus is any indicator.

Excellent point! Apple played the game really smart, they built up their brand first, so that people wanted the iPhone simply because it's Apple. Then with that popularity, they told the cell phone companies "If you want this phone, WE set the terms, not you". If any android phone maker said that, the carrier would laugh in their face, and that brand of phone would be gone the next day. Android is open source, so we suffer for the same reason that we love Android, anyone can change it. Apple won't give their clients that freedom, so despite their "bloat-free-ness", their product doesn't appeal so much to us.
Ok, I can see why carriers f**k the hell out of Android by preloading it with apps and stuff.
But what about Windows Phone? Wasn't Microsoft touting a „best of both worlds” experience, in that we would have the hardware choice of Android, and the unified experience of iOS?
Whatever happened to that?

[Q] Looking for information

Hey, as of today I bought the Lenovo A880, I know this is an A850 forum but there doesn't seem to be any A880 forums. I looked at the specs and there are little differences between the two phone, same OS, processor etc. But different GPU (Mali-400), 8GB storage etc.
This is my first time buying a phone from China, or even outside of my home country (Ireland), but may I ask is there anything I need to do to the phone in order for it to work in the European market or even in Ireland?
I'd love some decent advice as I said, I'm a noob at this!
Thank you

Most shops sent the device ready for use (inside Europe). There are some people saying that they have signal problems (in USA for ex.) but generaly i think you will not have any problems
If the phone does not have a playstore, rooted and install it or flash it with a pre-rooted rom... most times all these are by default.

Yes, most times it is like getting the phone from your nead store.
ZTE are chinese phones but you can go out and buy one from a near store. On the other hand, Lenovo has not expand its phone devices in europe, so there may not be your language in the phone (but good devs have cooked the officials ROMs so these things are available).
An other issue is when the phone is "locked" and this means that is ment to be for only specific companies (ex Vodafone) but most phones are unlocked

Root means gaining administrator access over your phone. Normally, when you buy a phone you are a user not an administrator. When we talk about android, root access is having administrators rights, on iPhone it is called jailbreak (also on playstation 3 or PSP ). Why to gain access? Then you will have the full control of your phone, which for a normal android user it is not so usefull BUT since you have an XDA account your are not a normal user
The Google Play is the largest app store on androids (most devices have it as a default) but if you do not have it you need root access to install it. Then you can download apps easily from there
Flash means sth like formating/changing the operation system (ex. windows) of your phone. There are ROMs (phone firmwares) made by some developers that may be better than the one you may have. Example: you may be able to move apps to SDcard, the google play will be installed and the phone will be rooted. Most chinese stores install such ROMs before they sent the phone to you
The difference with the PCs is that each ROM is specified for each phone (drivers issues). So you can't just grap a ROM from a850 and put it in a880. The flashing process is also defferent from phone to phone (most times between companies). Ex: if you want to flash a sony phone you do not use the same program you use for a MTK device (like Lenovo's), and yes you flash your phone while you have it connected with your computer.
I wrote you some general info, you can google anything for more details. I hope you got the general idea

Gotchya, I definitely made sure that the phone was unlocked before I actually bought it, I just can't get over the price difference between Chinese phone companies and International phone companies, for the A880 I paid in the region of €100-€150 I've done a bit of research and what not on it and it's a tad more powerful than the Samsung Galaxy S3 which would cost someone €600-€700

Price differences are true. Lenovo a850 (my phone) costs 120€ from china and 240€ in Greece. This is because of the taxies, some stores order these phones (since lenovo has not open its phones in Europe) so there are more taxies.
On the other hand, there are some good choises made by Lenovo to hit the market with a lower cost. Your screen is not the same with S3, it may have twice the pixels your phone has, with a better screen quality. Is this so important? For me, no, but it is for sure more expencive.
The phone's camera most times is lower, and most people (people that do not know anything of computers) search for a new phone based on the camera and the logo on the phone, plus it is more expencive to have a better camera. Less RAM is an other feature of Lenovo phones, based to other devieces you can compare them...
From my stand point, you take what you pay. The trick is to take the phone from China, its half the price. Since i want to have a fast phone, i am ok with a lower camera, i do not care. About the screen, MY TV IS FULL HD, why the hell should my phone also be??? This is far too much...

I've always had an under-powered phone compared to family and friends, and being into computer I'd much rather have processing power, RAM and the likes. The screen on the A880 will be probably be the best screen I ever had as well as the camera. The most pixels I ever had is probably 2.5 haha

I agree. I have had both the DAV-701L and DAV-703L. Hardware is ok but Huawei is H O R R I B L E at software. The worst experience in my life was with huawei software and their "support" which is hell-bent to "make it impossible". I have sold both phones and will wait for the Zenfone 3 Ultra. **** you, Huawei.
Do not "upgrade" to the Marshmallow (Android 6). It will ruin the phone. Newer is not better, especially with software "updates". Check-out the "changelist" for the Android 6 "upgrade" here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67787826&postcount=83
HiKirin is a horrible chipset.
And for who might be interested in the differences between the two, hardware-wise they are EXACTLY the same. DAV-703L's case finish is rougher/cheaper and the SIM/card slots are also flimsier than the DAV-701L and you feel it instantly as you touch the device.
Also, DAV-703L is absolutely FULL of chinese software crap that you cannot get rid of. You have Yellowpages (for china, of course) in the Phone app and it doesn't come with anything Google (including PlayStore).
If you really want this phone, get the DAV-701L. The 703L is not worth it, even thought it is the same phone, the software (which is already crap) ruins it.
And to finish :
" But I guess there is no cure for stupidity, since every time I "upgraded" my phones ever since the Galaxy Note N7000 got Android 4, they always screwed it up, every single manufacturer (LG, Samsung, HTC). They're not at fault here, I'm the idiot who never learns his lesson and disables the damn updates. "

I assumed that also and just like you, I was wrong. You can uninstall some of the software and install google play store apk, sure.
But the chinese stuff that I'm talking about is embedded into the phone's core functions (dialer, menu, settings, gallery etc.). You can't get rid of them without rooting and doing some very risky editing of the phone's config files which will most likely result in a bricked device.
Bonus points : Absolutely no Huawei service center located in any other part of the globe except ASIA, will be able to fix a bricked DAV-703L. So if you brick it, you have to send it back to China. The reverse is true for the DAV-701L.
The genius that is Huawei, decided that if you can afford to pay 600$ for a phone, then you don't have the money to buy a plane ticket. Idiots...

Idiots...

I am so sorry you cant root your phone and do some simple build.prop changes!
Me too, actually. Programming (even simple text) puts me right to sleep. I really admire people who know how to configure Android so, good on you.
Rooting was not an option for me as in my country (although illegal, they did it anyway), Huawei made it so that the warranty is rendered invalid if I get the bootloader unlock code from them. So you guys are lucky and I'm happy for you but I've given up on Huawei.

You're in an EU country, so it doesn't matter what what Huawei tell you about the warranty, it's against the EU law. So unlocking the bootloader won't void you warranty. And I have no clue of programming, but I got rid of all the Chinese stuff on my 703, and I'm full on google, like on my previous LG G2.
If you're serious about your phone, you have to invest time on searching and editing. I couldn't be more happy about my P8 max since it is now exactly how I wanted it to be at the beginning. No single Chinese app or word, everything replaced with the right software, very long SoT.

That is very cool. Would be nice if you made a tutorial for the other people who are using the DAV-703L to get rid of all the chinese bloatware.
I know what they are doing is not legal but if I argue with them, they just won't give me the code. Weird thing is, even the tech support from UK told me the same thing.

How long is your SoT? I have 701L (unrooted) and get 6 hours max I bet.
I where Surpprised two see both the 703L handset does manage LTE+ 4G here in Denmark.. (a 32GB titanium grey and 64GB silver, both 703L on EMUI4.0)
at least on the celluar-carrier "3" here in scandinavia..(only LTE-carrier i have checked on) (attached screendumps)
NB.. in respons to upper-replys about lacks of 703L vs international 701L version..like getting google-services, like play-store on 703L.. is as easy as just open "Hiapp" and type "google" and take play store from there or any other google international service..// purchased another p8max at the start of 2016, and wonderd about getting the 701L version, but didnt make sense, it costed close too double the price of the 290US delivered' i ended up paying for an 703L titanium grey..

Oppo A73 or F5 Youth Root? Re-post

Hello Xda People,
So I recently joined xda cause I need help, I recently bought a OPPO A73 in Australia (I live here), but I found out that in some other countries (Mostly Asian countries) it is also known as OPPO F5 Youth. Now, I've had this phone for around 5 months now and putting it straight out there, the software is Sh*t, I have had multiple hick ups and performance drops, it is a joke. I tried looking all over the internet for software updates for this specific phone but sadly there is non and this is the same story with rooting the phone, there is completely nothing about this A73. I have come here to find out if anyone has any idea how to root this phone or at least change the software to stock android (Although that might seem impossible as I don't now what the bootloader is) or even lineage (They do have OPPO as a brand they support but without a model ID its hard to tell if my phone model is supported). If there is way please let me know cause colour OS 3.2 is just slow and utterly disgusting to operate on. If you do need any information about my phone (CPU info, model number, hardware etc) please let me know and I'll post it upon request.
Thanks
Rainer

I got mine from Optus unlocked for $259, and same here, if I’ve known I wouldn’t have bought it, especially with the performance drop, it’s pretty bad. And it’s also frustrating how the normal f5 has a colourOS 5.1 update and the f5 youth, its literally the exact same doesn’t have one?? Like, I just want to root it and put any bloody os on it cause colour Os is killing the phone in my opinion. Glad to see I’m not the only one with this problem.
any luck with this yet? I have a friend who is suffering under the exact same issue with colorOS, it would be helpful to know if the bootloader is locked or if something like Kingroot app works on it?

No still no luck, thinking of just getting the Nokia 7 Plus or Oppo r15 Pro, unless I try to install lineage in a very dodgy way but hope it works!! I'll let you know, hopefully someone else out there is looking for a solution to this madness
Just a small update, I found nothing and was not able to root or install any sort of software, seems like OPPO is the Apple of android, their security is pretty high and it's a shame on what their phones are capable of but just held back with software. Going to sell my A73 or F5 Youth (Same phone, different country) and buy the essential phone. At least I'll have a good software experience and performance with a upgrade to the camera compared to the A73. Thanks for everyone who looked at this post or replied.
BUMP
yeah unfortunate oppo is like this
i am gonna try to sell it on gumtree for like $350 and see if anyone buys it. how much did you sell it for? hec i was able to install fortnite mobile on it but gpu isn't supported

Just want to piggyback and get notified if anyone finds a solution as my sister is waiting to get this phone...
OK so I've just seen another post saying Kingo and Oppo Tools doesn't work on the A73 so... hmm.

Oh, I was going to sell it after my essential phone comes in from America, was going to sell it around the same price I purchased it but might sell it for less, honestly it's not worth the money.

Well, I have had 0 luck with kingo and even couldn't have downgraded because the new software has a bug that the lower section of the keyboard (with the space bar, enter and shift keys) would register twice to I'd get random full stops and constant caps which honestly just kills me. You are better off buying a Huawei P20 Lite (OR also known as Nove 3e) or something equivalent, they have decent software updates and specs, just try steer away from Oppo if you can.
recovery mode??
i pressed the power button, volume up and volume down idk but when i did that it booted in reocvery mode, i dont think this will help but maybe theres some way unlock bootloader woth this info
****ing oppo
phone slow as hecc youtube crashes man i thought 3 gbs of ram would be enough -_- man do i wish i could refund but hopefully getting a pocophone f1 soon, remember one plus being a budget phone ooooof, too bsd i never got that in its prime

For me this phone is long gone, I bought the essential ph-1 when I sold the Oppo A73 for $200 on facebook. The octocore isn't actually slow, the processor in the phone is decent and should be able to handle tasks well, HOWEVER, because of the heavy and very un-optimized software (ColorOS), the phone is very slow and is not stable with most apps on the play store. And no the phone can NOT be rooted.

Was the root of the device done?

???
Did you find root him؟؟؟
Please help
Unfortunately I also have this oppo a73 with 4gb/64gb variant. Moreover my a73 has developed problems like "unknown baseband version" and "IMEI null" and it has become totally useless since it can't access any cellular network.
Please help me to find any way to flash stock ROM on it which may correct its baseband version or please guide me how to root this pathetic mobile phone so I can rewrite it's IMEI after root permissions.
Thanks in advance

Nokia smartphones have been SECRETLY sending users' personal data to China

Go Nokia,
now i understand why you do not allow unlocking the bootlocker.

Same thing is sent to Google servers even if we have location enabled. Could this be connected with China GPS system Baidou? I think we should be more open minded and take more attention to Google and cookies handling

The problem is that, when the data are sent to Google, you agreed to that. Not in the case with China servers.

That text in Mirror sounded as continuations of the paranoia regarding Russia and China. It could be true, it could be false, but for sure somebody is gathering info on us by cellphone, mostly US companies. If you need to be anonimus avoid all modern ways of communication. I don't give a crap if they gather info on my location and phone numbers, they can be only jealous where I am

You misinterpreted my thought. I don't care all the data they gather about me.
But on the outside you "should be able to agree or decline" the data collection.
Never buying another Nokia phone again. The situation with the bootloader being unlockable officially was the last straw. By the time they allowed it with Nokia 8 the xda community had already moved on now almost 2 years after its release nobody has bothered to create a custom rom for it, all because of HMD. Nokia 7plus is gonna suffer the same way even though it has huge potential.

Yeah, maybe you should buy a pixel then (3x the price though)?
Or maybe a OnePlus (Chinese also!). Mi A2?
What about a good ol' Samsung? My friend's s8 just got it's first update to Pie (still 'fresh' after half an year), not to mention Knox on top of locked bootloader!
I am not saying it was ok what happend, but was just a mistake with a batch of phones (also maybe that is why all this mess with 2 versions of updates for international model).
Except the pixels and essential phones, I do not think any other phone is with security patch up to Feb.

So not allowing the bootloaders to be unlocked is just another mistake huh? Stop making excuses for Nokia
