Pixel 2, OTA update, and Magisk question - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

Trying to get the recent OTA to work on my Pixel 2, Google edition on Verizon. Rooted with Magisk, but while following the instructions on the Magisk site regarding "uninstalling" Magisk to allow OTA to go through, I am noticing that after I uninstall Magisk without rebooting (as directed), my phone is still rooted. The instructions say not to reboot, else Magisk actually will be uninstalled, so I guess I am confused here.
Furthermore, the update is stalling at "downloading" or "installing" (...after 10 hours still not on step 2...) depending on whether I am on original Play Services or updated Play services, so I am wondering if the Magisk unrooting process is not working properly.
I know I can flash the entire OTA and reroot, but trying to avoid, as I thought this was supposed to work without having to do so.
Thanks in advance!

Search the forum on how to update.
There are a few walk through guides.
Snapshot :
Download factory image
Remove "-w" (so it doesn't wipe user data)
In fastboot, run flashall
You will now be updated without root
Remove pin/fingerprint security (issue with Feb update and TWRP)
Boot TWRP image
Flash TWRP zip
Reboot
Reboot into TWRP
Flash kernel then Magisk (I prefer ElementalX)
Reboot
Reset pin/fingerprint security
Profit.

Understood, and thanks. I was trying to do this with the Magisk website instructions for taking an OTA normally. Are you saying that this can't be done on Pixel 2?

As far as I know, no. OTAs cannot update and maintain root at this time.

Help with Sideload, installs

Unlocked, Magisk-rooted, TWRP 3.1.1 beta working. Updated from .010 to .018 to get rid of "System Update" notice that failed to install, but I had to "flash-all" factory image as I could NOT get .018 OTA image to sideload. Failed immediately.
Cannot sideload .011 (8.1) OTA image, tried with all versions of TWRP. Fails immediately.
And, TWRP 3.2 will both sideload and zip-install from 3.1.1 beta, but after reboot, I'm back to beta.
Please tell me what I'm missing: any help appreciated. TIA
You might try using flashfire to install the ota.zip image. It's worked for me on other rooted phones.

- Uninstall Magisk to unroot
- Flash the system.img and boot.img from whatever version/factory image you're on to confirm you are stock (this should also uninstall twrp if you went with the install method over the temp boot)
- Then follow the instructions on Google's OTA page (download OTA, boot into Stock Android Recovery, hold power and press volume up, select Apply update from ADB to sideload OTA)
- Flash custom kernel if desired (via fastboot, I'm using Flash Kernel), temp boot twrp and sideload Magisk (14.3 worked for me with 8.1)

Thanks for confirming what I was coming to suspect: have to unroot and ditch TWRP to move ahead. I appreciate this.
What is point of "systemless" root, however, if you have to unroot to get OTA update?

Systemless root shouldn't change anything on the system partition. All changes are made to the kernel. Note that when rooting with Magisk you provided a boot.img rather than the system.img. the suggestion to reflash the system image is to nuke any changes you may have made to it. An OTA will fall off you have done any tinkering.
Unrooting should be as simple as restoring the original boot image.

Anyone able to root the Dec update?

For the life of me I cannot root this latest patch. I have tried 6 times either with having the Magisk app repack the boot image or by booting TWRP to install the Magisk zip. Using either method forces my phone into the same state/condition. When the phone reboots, it goes into recovery which says the data on my phone may be corrupt and prompts me to either try again or factory restore (erase data).
i was able to. i booted into twrp, sideloaded the twrp installer, then the magisk zip and sultan kernel and everything is running smoothly for me
Ok, so I was able to recover and root from an answer given in a pixel 3 thread using:
Pixel 3/Pixel 3 XL
- fastboot flash boot --slot all boot.img (from December factory image)
- fastboot boot twrp-3.2.3-1...img
- install Magisk' uninstaller
- magisk-18.0.zip
- reboot system
What happens though is when I use adaway to update the hosts file, it breaks everything and I can't boot into system until I do the above steps again. Strange...
Do you have adaway install by chance?
Hi! I have no problem with last update, magisk nor adaway. I just flashed last update with flash-all.bat script, than fastboot twrp, install magisk ver. 18... and everything is working on 100%.
To successfully root on the Dec update you must use Magisk v18.0
[2018.12.8] Magisk v18.0 - Root & Universal Systemless Interface [Android 5.0+]
If you've used an older version, you'll get a boot loop into Recovery.
Side load / install the uninstaller from @topjohnwu's page linked above.
Then side load / install again with v18.0
Use the uninstaller first.

I'm on the December patch and am rooted with Magisk 17.1.
I actually just noticed the new update and am fixing to update Magisk. But you don't have to use v18. 0 to root December update. I've been on December update since it came out and rooted like always right away and haven't had any bootloops.
I rooted okay today with Magisk 18.0. It sounds like some people have had problems if they did not first uninstall Magisk with the latest uninstaller. That's what I did as a precaution (rather than just restoring the stock boot.img with the Magisk app, before upgrading the factory image).

I had issues on both of my Pixel 2 phones trying to use any Magisk less than v18.0
I also had issues with v18.0 until I used the uninstaller first.
I read that other people were having the same issue.

I guess so. I always open the .bat file and remove the -w so that it don't we my phone tough. Not sure if that makes a difference.

I can't speak to the 3XL since I am on dotOS, but I had no issues installing my wife's P3 with flash-all (minus -w), rooted with Magisk 19.1 and TWRP 3.3.0-0 fully installed using Advanced > Install Recovery Ramdisk method.

Thanks for replay,
I flashed the factory image (minus -w), booted TWRP 3.3.0-1 and installed magisk 19.1 many times but never had luck.
After that i flashed the factory image (minus -w) again, booted TWRP 3.3.0-1 and installed magisk 18.1 and now it worked, after that I was able to update magisk in the app to 19.1.
hopefully it is written understandably.
208.9mb too! Quite large for just a small incremental update too!

Try this first.
Factory reset in TWRP (after installing factory update and rebooting).
You'll have to set up as new but won't lose internal data.

I had some issues getting the May update, TWRP 3.3.0-1, Kirisakura 2.3.0, and Magisk 19.1 to play nicely together. Lots of "rescue party" reboots at the "G" logo of booting after trying to install everything together. I basically did what you did to solve the issue too. Installed the May update (removing -w) then installed TWRP 3.3.0-1, Kirisakura 2.3.0 and Magisk 18.1 and restarted back to system to make sure it all worked (which it did). After that I upgraded to Magisk 19.1 via the Magisk app and everything seems to be fine now. My temp solution until this was just use TWRP 3.2.3-3 which I had been using up until this point. That worked too and allowed everything to play nice from the initial installation.
Aren't you supposed to boot system before flashing magisk?

I was wondering the same thing about whether you finished booting before installing Magisk. I completely boot after every step (Image, TWRP, Magisk, Kernel - ElementalX installed with EX Kernel Manager) and don't stack installs in TWRP. Been doing that for years, and it has saved me some time long term despite the couple of extra minutes during installs. My other thought was possibly a bad 19.1 file.

Looking at new apps to backup in TB, there were about 7 new system apps that I saw and one that had been removed.
since there is an auto reboot after flashing flash-all.bat, I did a reboot after flashing the factory image.

I always reboot to the system after the factory image/monthly update is installed and allow it to finish setup. Then I fastboot into TWRP to install TWRP recovery, my kernel, and Magisk via the "add more zips" option in TWRP. I've been doing this ever since I got the device and never ran into issues until this May update. Doing this with the May update, TWRP 3.3.0-1, Kirisakura 2.3.0 and Magisk 19.1 caused reboots like I described. However, reverting to TWRP 3.2.3-3 instead (my initial solution/fix) or Magisk 18.1 then upgrading Magisk to 19.1 (like @sliding_billy suggested) worked fine. This to me implies a compatibility issue of some type and not an issue with the method of installation.

magisk and gpay dont work after googleplay services version 16.0.91
if i downgrade to 16091 it works - but i cant let it upgrade otherwise it breaks gpay
im not sure if its on all phones or just pixels with the titan chip that GPS is now interacting with, but if you try to upgrade to 17.x google play service with magisk - it doesnt work and detects root.
just FYI for people with issues with updates let it boot into OS before flashing TWRP / KERNEL / MAGISK otherwise you will get a bootloop.
and personally i flash TWRP/KERNEL/Magisk in that order and ive never gotten a bootloop (but have flashing kernel last a couple times)
my rationale behind flashing magisk last is because if you were on stock kernel, you would just flash magisk, you wouldnt flash magisk then stock kernel over it would you?

I sideloaded. Worked fine.
Anyone else unable to root the May update? I installed the update, TWRP, and the kernel I use and everything was fine. After installing Magisk 19.1 the phone boots straight to a "System UI has stopped" dialog box. Substratum overlays were uninstalled before updating and uninstalling Magisk fixes the issue, leading me to believe that it is the cause.
I tried installing Magisk 18.1 instead to see if it would work, but oddly it doesn't seem to install at all. When I boot the phone Magisk Manager was installed, but it claims that Magisk is not installed and no apps can get root access.

AFAIK, your only choices are to sideload the OTA from https://developers.google.com/android/ota and re-root. You can also flash the factory image and re-root. Be sure to remove the -w from flash-all.bat/sh so you don't wipe your data. I prefer the factory image method. You can patch boot.img before flashing the image, which makes re-rooting a bit easier. I believe there have been some reports of OTA working again after flashing the factory image.
well you have root duh lol, off course otas will fail, at least they dont install unlike old times when install would be error
there are many ways to install but this is the easiest for me every month
each month download full system image
copy boot to phone and patch it with magisk apk, copy back to pc
apply full system image flash all.bat but remove the -w from the .bat (Edit the bat)
this will install the lastest ota but you wont lose any data or settings, everything well be okay
root is lost, now you have to root again
boot magisk boot image
apply direct install in magisk apk
restart
this has to be done every month
you can also uninstall magisk every month and let the ota download and install but that is even slower and annoying, this is how is done

[SOLVED] OTA with ROOT...

I ask before in "guide to root motorla g stylus":
really is no way to work OTA while Magisk installed? i mean some Magisk Hide Props Config, or not install TWRP or anything? i actualy have Nokia 7 Plus (unlocked via unoficial method) and last year while not installed TWRP is possible check system update, install over air (while Magisk is installed), before reboot run MagiskManager, install Magisk to other slot, reboot, started from updated slot with Magisk installed, without need flash stock boot img before ota and flash manualy patched boot img after OTA... sure have Moto G Pro additional check or limitation and this not work? thanks...

without reaction, then try make separated thread, i actualy have one week "Motorola Moto G Pro" (XT2043-7), rooted, and wait for OTA, UpdateCheck in Settings not show me, try LMSA Rescue/Download and show me same version as have installed QPRS30.80-109-2-7...
Questions:
- Have any user of same phone, without root, already showed Octorber OTA?
- Is on rooted posible UpdateCheck with show if OTA avaiable?
- Have any working solution for OTA update on rooted phone without need connected with PC? Similar or same as i write about Nokia7Plus?
(i mean without flash back stock img, make ota, patch new boot.img file in MagiskManager, flash it via TWRP booted...
i think without PC be sure posible flash back stock boot.img to boot partition, before OTA, maybe download zip of full "rom" and extract boot.img, patch via MagiskManager, but not flash patched
EDIT: Sollution here
The answers to your first two questions are yes. When on stock I successfully updated. And while rooted there was a notification for ota update, it would download, but fall to install. I came across a way to do it without having to connect to pc. Some said it was successful but I was not able to try. It has something to do with placing your original boot.img into a a folder on one of the root directories but I had no idea how in the hell they came up with the system path to the file (encrypted??) Because I didn't have any of the folders on my phone and was to lazy at the time to ask for help. It was also an older thread so I didn't feel like bringing up a thread that old.
without root you updated system to higher (with Ocrober security patches) version than QPRS30.80-109-2-7 (this version have September security patches) ?
second part of you answer i think not understand, with rooted phone, put boot.img in "a" directory in one (which?where?) root folder and OTA services flash it before upgrade/reboot???
please, anyone with "Motorola Moto G Pro" (XT2043-7), channel "reteu", have already displayed update notification for "QPRS30.80-109-2-8" ?

I installed Magisk Manager via download of apk file (not TWRP). I then clicked on Magisk and chose "Select and patch a file". The end result was getting root. I never actually did a separate install of Magisk or Magisk Manager. I wonder if your step 3 will work in this case.

Understand, but as i write, you must have installed Magisk via TWRP, with this method, Magisk make backup of boot image to "/data/magisk_backup_SomeRandomStrings/boot.img.gz", this file is used when you doing step 3, but if you only patch stock boot file, then ofcourse this backup is not created... i sugest you:
- revert boot to stock via same way as you flash patched before, but using stock boot.img
- boot TWRP (NOT flash, use command is section "Boot") and install Magisk.zip oficial release
- if on your phone/touchscreen variant not work touchscreen in TWRP, then (while still is booted TWRP) install it using adb
Thanks.
I have a couple questions:
1. Is it true that one shouldn't do an OTA unless the corresponding firmware can be downloaded due to the fact that you will lose root and not be able replace it until the corresponding boot.img can be obtained?
2. When downloading firmware from LMSA, does it download the latest or does it download your current version?

Tried the above steps, but OTA update unsuccessful. Discovered that phone still rooted so obviously step 3 did not work for me. What should I try next? How about fastboot of original boot.img?

step 3 restore boot image(what show you MagiskManager as output while you restore images??), but without reboot you have ofcourse still root, and you can't reboot if you want patch boot in other slot after ota via MagiskManager....
but i don't know reason why OTA failed anyway restoring original boot.img via fastboot be i think possible (not try in MotoGPro but manytime with Nokia7Plus)

Thanks. Magisk simply says, "restoration done". Once I fastboot boot.img will I need to re-install magisk from scratch or should I continue with steps 6 and 7?

maybe magisk backup boot.img have already twrp inside if you install twrp before magisk?
anyway, if you flash stock boot.img, then step 6&7 is not applicable, because this need booted rooted system
