I just got my Captivate a couple of days ago (refugee from a Tilt2). I am slowly learning about Android.
I used the Pimp My Android PDF, rooted the phone and installed Launcher Pro. I charged the battery overnight and a message was on the phone that it is fully charged. When I unplugged it, I immediately got a message that the battery is low and I should plug it in. I have plugged and unplugged it a couple of times and it is behaving like the battery needs to be charged.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
That doesn't sound good. May need to take it back and get a new one. The only other suggestion I have is i've seen some folks say you need to condition the battery meter so it reads right. Leave the phone unplugged until the battery is so low it's flashing... wear it almost all the way down. Then plug it in and charge it up till the "battery full" thing pops up. Wash, rinse repeat. I saw several folks say after a few times of that, the battery lasted a LOT longer. Maybe yours is just really confused or it's bad. If you don't want to take it back (considering all the stuff you've done to it) try charging/discharging a few days and see if it's any better.
That happened to me one time when charging through a front USB port on my computer. I think it was the 3rd day I had the phone. I no longer use the front port for charging or data exchange, and haven't seen the problem again.
After Spending the day with the charger plugged in, it seems to be OK now. Maybe it was something I did. I will be keeping an eye on it for a while. Thanks for your responses.

I am currently running CM9 (bhundven's 7-29 herring build) on my Galaxy S 4G, and I am having some problems with random shutdown. This has only been happening for the past few days or so (EDIT: and I have been running CM9 for about three months with no issues). It seems that the phone works perfectly fine until the charge gets to about 60% starting from a full charge, and then the phone randomly shuts off. The phone will not start back up unless I have it plugged into the wall, and the results are a little unpredictable. The first time it happened, I turned it back on and it said the battery was at 1% and charging. Now, after clearing the battery stats, it reboots to 60% battery. It seems to work perfectly fine after that, and yesterday it went all the way down to about 12% before I started charging it again. It just happened again today, and when I turned it back on it said it was at about 60%.
My charging habits are pretty bad for Li-Ion batteries; I tend to let the charge drop all the way to about 10% or 5% before I plug it in and charge it all night, way past what is necessary to get to 100%.
The battery does look a tad swollen, but I might be exaggerating.
I just wanted to know if this is a bad battery with 100% certainty, or could it be a problem with the OS or internal parts, etc. I can easily buy another battery online, and I probably will.
EDIT: Also, I have had some overheating issues with this phone, and I can often smell electrical smoke in the charger port area behind the speaker, which is why I say it might be an internal parts issue.

You need a new battery. I was having the same issue lime 3 months ago; phone was dying at half charge the when it rebooted, battery would be dead. Then when I plugged it in, it would charge in 20 minutes and the repeat the cycle. Put the battery on a table to see if its still flat. If it rocks or spins excessively, its usually an indicator of a bad cell.
Mine JUST started doing the exact same thing last week. Battery is definitely swollen. I replaced it just this evening and I'm in the process of doing a full charge from 0->100 to see how things go. I'm 99.999% sure the battery was dead. Replace yours.

We just had a heat wave here and maybe coincidentally to that, I've been having random shutdown problems. Having looked at this thread and my battery, I can tell that I definitely need to replace that. So thanks, all!
I was wondering whether anyone else is having issues with their Nexus 5 not charging, or at the very least charging super slowly?
Mine has been plugged in for about 3 hours and only charged up about 10%. Could it be a teething issue (it's the first charge out of the box) or something worth contacting Google about?
Any input would be gratefully received.

Yeah, I've rebooted a few times as I've been installing odds and bods and getting it how I like it.
I plugged it in with a different charger which took it up to 100% in about an hour, but after unplugging it and using it for about 45mins it's dropped like 35-40% - and that isn't media consumption, that's just settings, web, etc. I'm not sure whether its me or the phone!

Definitely the phone. But I can't figure out exactly what.
The drop to 40% could some from brightness, data, you using and playing with it. In that case, the charger is broken, and needs sending back.
When it's charging go to settings > battery and see what it says at the top next to the word charging.
If it says (AC) then it should be going up around 1% or so every minute, if it says (USB) then it will be anything from 1% every 3 or 4 minutes to every 15 minutes. If you're using the stock charger (plugged into wall socket) it should always say (AC), if it says (USB) then something is wrong.
I'll keep an eye on it over the next 12-24 and see if I can isolate what's responsible. It's an odd one though, for sure.

Glad it's not just me experiencing this. I noticed yesterday that when I took my new Nexus 5 out of the box and plugged into my computer's USB port to charge it the phone's battery percentage was rising painfully slowly, and the percentage wouldn't budge at all when the screen was on.
I charged it to 100% over night using the supplied charger. Drove to work this morning with it plugged into the USB port on my car stereo, and unlike my Nexus 4 which would usually be on 100% by the time I get out of the car, the Nexus 5 was on 94%.
I've been at work for an one hour and 20 minutes now, and whilst my nexus 5 was sitting in my pocket doing seemingly nothing it has dropped from 94% to 80% battery. At this rate it will be on red before I leave work, and even sooner than that if I have to actually use it.
BetterBatteryStats doesn't work with Kit Kat yet so I'm unable to gain any further clues... Will be interested to hear what happens with your Nexus 5.
I've been keeping my eye on it and it seems that Google Services is using the most battery, 24% at present, and my screen - which I would expect to be sapping it the most - is only at 9%.
That said, I charged it up to 100% last night and left it and it was at 91% by morning without being used at all. By lunchtime it was down to 73%, again, without any use save for half a dozen text messages sent.
It's not terribly impressive so far, it has to be said. I'm hoping it's just a painful breaking in process rather than an RMA issue, because Google offers shocking after sales service.

You don't need to RMA. It's the software's fault. Maybe the fact that Google Now listens to you continuously when you're on your homescreen has something to do with it.
Sounds like the phone is performing some sort of heavy background task? Maybe backing up your app settings?
Mine also seems to be discharging very quickly and charging very slowly. It charged the same way on a few different chargers. My SIII can usually go from 10->80 in like 30 minutes...
The always listening thing doesn't seem to be activated on mine (it's a UK model), but I've been surprised by the drain when it's on standby, without even being touched. I'm used to battery life being a bit iffy, as I've come to this from a Nexus 4, but I was expecting a little bit more so far.
I've tried factory resetting in the hope that it might iron-out any potential software issue, so I'll keep tabs on it today and see how it progresses. Fingers crossed, eh?!

I thought I was the only experiencing this issue it takes awhile to charge and battery drains very quickly. Last night battery was down to 20% this morning woke up and found battery was completely dead, not impressed at all. My biggest concern here after using note 3 for the last month this is very worrying indeed.
Mine is also from the uk.
What are google like on returns and s&@t?

I think this is definitely a Play Services issue.
When I checked my phone late last night I noticed that Google had forwarded a Play Services update to the Play Store. I've been playing with my phone this morning and battery seems hugely improved. Watched YouTube videos for 45-50 minutes and the battery dropped from 100% to 91%, which would suggest a potential screen-on time of around 8 hours and 20 minutes in total. Not bad.
I've had my phone in my pocket for 30 minutes and the battery hasn't budged from 91%, which is again good news. Yesterday it was dropping 1% every 5 or 6 minutes.
It will be interesting to see how it holds up when I stream my Google Play Music library in the car on the way to work, or how it is when I get to my office where the signal is horrible. "Play Services" battery consumption was high on my device yesterday but"mobile standby" was just as bad. Will report back later.

Change your google now voice setting to US English and the hotword box should appear when you back out and go back in.
I have a slightly different issue. My Nexus 5 ONLY charges at USB mode with any other charger than the one supplied. I've tried 5 chargers including the car charger and BB PlayBook high-speed charger. I've also tries using the supplied USB cable with another charger but it's a slow-go.
Very disappointed. May have to RMA because my buddy's phone does not show this problem.

In my experience Google Play customer services has been bloody awful. Got dicked around on a simple RMA request (the screen on my N4 went nuts spontaneously) and received no updates or anything. Every time I wrote to them I got told "We're waiting for a specialist to deal with this". It ended up going on for over a month before I said "Sod it" and just sent it to LG. Who, it has to be said, returned it as 'repaired' without even looking at it, leaving the problem still present. Had to just pay the extra out and get a door-to-door replacement from Google in the end, which I wanted to avoid.
In re the problem, have you had the Google Play Services update that @Stylus_XL mentioned? I haven't yet, I don't think. My battery is still draining too fast. I haven't touched the phone for hours, then picked it up and made one 2 minute phone call and it dropped 4%. Stylus, is yours still stable after the update or have you seen any other issues?
My first battery cycle was weird. Took a few hours to reach full, behaved normal on the way down. Second charge from about 40% took about 90 minutes to reach full. It may just be the first cycle or two.

I have been, mate. It's been all original accessories.
So, I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 3 that I got around the time they first came out. It's never gotten wet or really had any problems until the past few months. The first thing that happened was the power button broke and it was stuck down for quite a while before I figured out how to "fix" that. A little carefully applied WD-40 around the power button did the trick. I got a new battery and everything seemed fine.
Lately, however, the charging is not working correctly at all. I'm using the same charger that came with the phone and it will seem to work fine most of the time, but it has problems once unplugged. For example, I'll charge it overnight and wake up to it being at 50-80% battery. Other times, I'll charge it overnight, it will then show 100%, but after unplugging it, it will very quickly, like a few minutes, drop to the ~85%. What happened today though was the final straw. I turned it off and let it charge for about 4 hours until it said it was full. I then took the battery out for 5 minutes before putting it back in and plugging it in again. It then said it was at ~15% battery. I turned it on and, yes, 13% after ~4 hours of charging. I still occasionally have problems with the power button getting stuck and causing a rapid discharge, but I can fix that now and I carry two batteries usually. Not being to charge them though isn't going to work.
I currently live in Taiwan and use Chunghwa Telecom. I constantly have a little notification that says "This SIM card is from an unknown source", but I didn't have problems until months after moving here.
Any thoughts on what could be causing the charging to malfunction and how to fix it? I love my phone and would hate to part with it.
Hey guys, As title says, So the story on this thing lol Bought it new I believe 1.5-2 years ago, battery got bad, so this spring in february I replaced the battery my self, I had ordered 2, Both certainly a genuine battery, I had a S7 so I wanted a spare for mine when IT came time. After battery replacement phone was great again, good as new! then as of 3 days ago random shut offs. battery reads 80% shut off, Then I noticed If I left it off for a few hours or all night and turn it on in the am 0%! Tried charging and It's not taking a charge really, It went to 9% and stayed there for ever and was getting hot so I didn't want to risk it. ok so bad battery, this morning I swapped in my OTHER spare new battery, and Let it run up to 100% before turning on for first time, All seemed good! then all the sudden after 6 hours (before it was like every 10 minutes it'd shut off.) It started doing it again, Same thing battery is dead it figures, But it can't be.
Thinking perhaps the board it's self or something just ain't right? :\ Any thing to check or tips/tricks? I tried googling and came up empty handed.

It's likely the batteries you have are not genuine. Fake copies don't have a control chip which interfaces with the device. Your phone is shutting down to protect itself from overheating and other problems caused by copies.
There are some great copies out there but trust me they're still copies.

Yeah that's for sure on the copies, I had looked at how to compare what I had VS the fake ones and they seemed to be genuine? The batteries came from 2 seperate sources as well so hard to say, if the first one I put in was a copy then it did last a while but surprised then that my 2nd one never made it more than a few hours and the same issue. But you just never know. Everybody claims your buying a genuine battery but I'd assume the listing prices are tell tale of a fake/copy lol
Monitoring the battery and either the voltage sensor is bad or the battery, it'll chwrge and say it's full but yet voltage goes to 3.4v, then if I plug it in again it'll go up to 4.2v, once I unplug it, it drops of course, I was using a battery burn program and Itll drop from r. 2 to 3.4 right away, I got it to run for 15 mins one time then it dropped off, otherwise another time from 4.2v it dropped to 3.0 then shut off after starting th test in like 20 seconds, reports battery immediately as 17% after re booting.
This battery sat for a while so will try a 3rd fresh battery and hopefully genuine, though I suspect my past 2 were genuine.
Wanted to update this for anybody who may find this thread off google. I got the same replacement battery again Which was the fix, Asked the seller and they said they'd shoot me a new battery, Again whether genuine or not... Well they claim genuine. I let the phone charge to full and Performed the battery draw test by running the 2 apps to bog the phone down and make everything run to 100%. ran like that 0 issues for about 2 hours, Voltage was very stable the whole way through, before It would maybe hold for a few mins then shoot right down from 4.0 to ~3.2V. Even now after a hour It was still well above 3.7V. My old s7 battery was exactly that, sat unused on my shelf for ~2 years because it was mis-placed and even installed it was no good either.
