So I have been researching this for a friend because he wants to root his phone. The thing is, he only needs root so that he can tether. He doesn't want to sim unlock or have s-off or even install a different rom...
The only way to root the latest software that I have seen is to you use the ace hack kit.
There is no root only option...I have read the effin manual over and over and have searched but is there a way to just obtain root and only root?
Just want to remove at&ts tether block without losing the sound and installing the stock desire rom...
Help, please?

your best bet is not to ask this group how to breach your att agreement. this is not for your friend you are just saving face by not asking yourself, why doesnt your 'friend' have google? Yes you can just root the phone but to do so you have to follow the steps because its locked. no you cant just toggle an option and have root, thats the reason for all the steps. Or, just pay the tether fee and life is simpler, please dont use this forum to find ways to get around att fees.
Since it seems to be illegal to try and circumvent ATTs tethering restrictions...

Hey yall, I have some weird issues going on where I can't unlock my bootloader from Motorola (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2377064). So I have to try a different tool and it requires that I have root access. I guess motofail2go was nuked so I was wondering if there was any other hacks that allowed us to root without bootloader?
TIA
Really want to root my phone but actually use android pay on a daily basis. Does anyone have confirmation that android pay works with the bootloader unlocked and systemless root. I mainly want to edit the build prop to allow tethering and change the dpi. Also to install viperaudio if that is known to work on the honor. Thanks!
Hey guys, i'm wondering if it's possible to edit the build.prop so I can enable tethering without root. I don't want to lose Android Pay and i'm trying to keep my phone stock for the time being but I would like to be able to use tethering once in a while. Also, I haven't unlocked the bootloader and am using stock recovery and the phone was bought direct from Google.
Thanks everybody!
Same here. Would love to have unlocked hotspot/tether without root
I don't think there is a way to make the necessary edits to the files that need them without root access.

Unfortunately, there is no way to edit the build.prop without root access. I
Root. Modify. Unroot. Keep bootloader unlocked and install custom kernel to have access to Android Pay if you need it.

According to sd_shadow, modifying build.prop can be done with TWRP and PC (without root).

Any ideas how?
I'm on 7.1.1, bootloder unlocked, Verizon Pixel. Would like to avoid root if possible. That's the main reason I got this phone, I got tired of the rooting-related BS.

I could be wrong, but I think once you modify that file - root or not - you may run into some of that BS anyway (failed OTA's, etc) since the system will have been modified from stock.

So I guess sd_shadow was referring to root-modify-build-prop-unroot procedure. No way to avoid root.....
My Carrier, Cricket, will not enable the hotspot feature on my device. I've read it can be "circumvented" by unlocking the bootloader and rooting the device. Or, by modifying a file related to the hotspot function and changing some characters around.
Is the only option to get hotspot on my Pixel to unlock bootloader and root? Or is there another way? I tried that FoxFi app, and it wouldn't work.
