My Carrier, Cricket, will not enable the hotspot feature on my device. I've read it can be "circumvented" by unlocking the bootloader and rooting the device. Or, by modifying a file related to the hotspot function and changing some characters around.
Is the only option to get hotspot on my Pixel to unlock bootloader and root? Or is there another way? I tried that FoxFi app, and it wouldn't work.

I read that the reason Android wipes your data and apps when you unlock the bootloader is to protect this info from unauthorized access. That seems a little odd, since unlocking the bootloader requires unauthorized access to do - i.e., if you can run adb to do the unlock, you can use adb to get at the data that unlocking wipes to 'protect' you from the unlocker. Doesn't make any sense.
That said, are there other more real security considerations to unlocking your bootloader, or to flashing a custom recovery module? As long as I consider my lockscreen password to be 'secure enough', are there best practices to make sure that somebody without this password can not access my unlocked phone through the usb or recovery options?
Also, if I root my phone (or tablet, in this case), does that grant root access to all users in the new Android 4.2 multi-user world. Or is only user '0' granted root? Again, what are the security implications?
I'm currently running 5.0.1. I accidentally upgraded to this OS a while ago. I've used Sunshine and Kingroot to S-off and unlock my bootloader. All I want to do is enable the hotspot so my tablet can connect to it. Do I have to root it as well? I have PDAnet, but I can only use the bluetooth tethering option, the wifi hotspot does not work with any app I've tried. Can anyone let me know what I'm supposed to do from here?
Before I do this, can ANYONE confirm if this works with my version of j7 SM-J727T1 before I turn it into a brick?

After searching and reading related threads on other version I think i found a thread that's already talking about this particular model. Sorry if this is an unnecessary thread.
I tried it, didn't work.
It get's stuck at the downloading part and says "secure check failed - [recovery]"
I have tried this method and it didn't work. It requires that your bootloader is unlocked. I have MetroPCS j727t1 and my bootloader is locked and the option in developer options to enable/disable is not there. Because of this I could not root. If your bootloader is unlocked then I can only assume it will work.
How to Unlock without the option in developer menu.

there is a app called "unlock device". When you run it, it wl
Fail at the end. To get it to work call metropcs customer support and they will enable that app to work. I have done this on three SM-J272T1 phones two 16gig and the 32 gig verson.
I attained root, here is my guide.

Is there a way to enable tether without root?
If not, is it safe to use the method of root that involves flashing modded 11z rom?
Thanks.
Is it possible to root the t-mobile version on the latest rom? "OEM Unlocking" is greyed out for me. It seems like most content on this forum is for the international version so I'm a little weary of trying anything without clarification. All I want is for usb tethering to work properly.
You need to get SIM unlock before starting anything. Permanent SIM unlock. Then you can use a couple of guides around here to bootloader unlock (after checking OEM unlock AFTER you get SIM unlock), then from there you can use other guides here to root/magisk.
