Screen replacement and water resistance - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Unfortunately, my S8+ fell out of my locker at work on Friday and the screen is cracked. Via the insurance I have on my bank account, they will repair or replace for £30, but if they replace the screen (instead of the entire device), does that mean the seal which gives the phone its water proofing is broken and the repaired phone is no longer waterproof?
Anyone who's had their screen replaced know?

As long as the old glue/seal is properly removed and replaced The resistance should not be affected But as I tell all Resistance does not mean proof I only use it as an emergency and in if its raining and wet in my pocket and such no shower no pool no nothing I also have a rubber dummy plug to seal the usb port.....

I haven't needed a replacement screen on my S8+ but did have the rear replaced.
The first thing the repair guy informed me was that it wouldn't be waterproof.
Like you I would have thought that if the adhesive used was applied thoroughly it should have the same waterproof level as original.
I don't know if I was advised as above just to cover any possibility of water ingress.

If its going to be replaced by a samsung service center then you're fine, if the local iphone repair guy will replace it then odds are you're screwed.

Thanks for the info.
I don't really make use of the fact that it's water proof so I doubt it will make much difference to my every day use but sods law, if it's not I'll most likely drop it in water at some point in the future.

Warranty replacement question (ATT's website has no responses)

Long story short, I fell into a creek with my phone. According to the stuff I've read on ATT's site, the warranty does not cover water damage. If I took it to a replacement center, would they refuse to replace the phone because of this? I've heard that they sometimes just ask for the phone with no questions and hand you a new one.
Assuming they refused the phone though, would they have the means to sue me for intentionally bricking my phone to get a replacement?
I don't see how it could be grounds to sue. But, it probably means you would have to buy your next one.
Just apply the theory to anything else. If you fell in a creek with your car, would they give you a new car? Insurance would, but not directly from the dealer, hence you are paying for it with the insurance premium.
It will probably have the red void sticker showing that it is water damaged. And I doubt they will cover it.
Every phone AT&T sold has a water damage detection mark in side the phone. The first thing AT&T warranty dept. check is the mark. If it turns into pink or anything else other than white, your warranty is denied. Even if you get a replacement by luck, there are secondary check and you will be automatically billed full retail price (of a new phone) for your refurbished replacement phone.
Water damage is easy to find out. Bricked phone is not.
Hope you have insurance

there is one on the battery as well. Probably also a hidden water detection sticker someone inside the casing (in addition to the one that is in the battery compartment and on the batt)

You haven't stated which warranty you are referring to. If you mean the 1 year factory warranty, then no it won't be covered. If you have the additional $5 coverage then it will be covered after a $125 deductible.
From the Wireless Phone Insurance documentation:
Covered Incidents:
Lost, Stolen, Accidental Physical or Liquid Damage, Mechanical and/or Electrical Failure after the Manufacturer’s Warranty Period has expired.

Yeah, soon we will find that the entire phone contains water detection markers
It must be the #1 cause for ppl to claim warranty replacements. For a few times I have to use warranty service, the first question they ask is what color is the sticker inside the phone.
BTW, if you use you phone in humid places a lot, like bath room while showing, good luck with your warranty
If you have been paying monthly for insurance, then you will be able to pay $50-$80 to get a replacement. Otherwise, no they won't replace it.

Hmmm. So far nothing is pink/red, I'll have to open my phone. Haven't attempted to peroxide/bleach them. The phone, for the most part, works. The leftover residue is causing some issues, though.

You shouldn't be using the phone yet if there is still water inside. Every moment it's on increases the risk of a short or other damage. Stick the phone in a bowl of rice for a day or two. Make sure you keep the back plate off, and take the battery, SIM and SD cards out, and place them in a separate smaller bowl of rice. The rice absorbs the remaining moisture from the phone.
I've saved countless friend's phones this way.

AT&T is a $125 deductible for smartphones. I've already claimed mine once.

For the past 24 hours I took the whole thing apart (screws and all) and let them dry. Not with rice, but they're dried up nonetheless. It's not so much the water that concerns me as it is the leftover particles in any residue that's left behind.

[Q] Hi Xperia Arc S problem

Hi guys.
Basically my problem is, today I was getting my MOT done, waiting around. Was using my phone to text, it was working fine.
Put my phone in my empty pocket, 2 minutes later, felt it vibrate and noticed I had a call coming in, but also the screen had a hairline Y shaped crack in it on the inside at the bottom.
No drops, knocks or nothing and its in a protective silicone case. I'm now having to basically hope that Sony believe me and let me know if its warranty repairable other than this its £50 - £60 charge for something that I did not do. Assuming they accuse me of dropping it.
Ive checked the net and it seems im not the only one this has happened to (albeit on other types of phones too).
Its only 4 months old from new, its a PAYG phone and had no insurance eek: I know).
What ground to I have to stand on if any at all ?
Bumped - Any ideas people ?
Has this ever happened to you guys ?

Thats more in reference to the exterior housing cracking, where as mine is the inside screen with zero exterior damage. But I suppose I see your point. Maybe someone has the same problem there due to heat....
If it's internal damage I don't see any reason for sony to reject your warranty. AFAIK if it was due to user mishandling then an exterior damage would be done before interior damages happen.

Thanks man, this is my view on it too. Although I imagine it wont be sony's.
The phone is only 4 months old and there is the general wear and tea on the case, the odd mark where its in and out the pocket and some scratches on the screen protector. But apart from that its immaculate. There is no significant damage on the case that would suggest It smashed of the ground.
If they tell me its broke because its been in my pocket then.... well, who doesn't put their phone in their pocket ?
As i say, its internal, screen has hairline crack inside, and went black at the bottom and also, unless I pressed the screen it just remained black.

[Q] Cracked back glass panel

Hello everyone,
I sat my phone on my bed and it slid off and landed on a plate. The back glass panel is cracked all over and has two spots of likely impact.
Luckily the camera, flash and front screen is perfectly fine so I'm hoping the cost to replace the single sheet of glass is low.
I know this is a recently released device but I was wondering if anyone has had this issue before and how much Sony charged to repair it out of warranty either on this model or a previous Z.

You are probably better off doing it yourself or give it to a local shop as manufacturers generally have a higher turn around time. I believe I saw a back glass for $30-40, though not sure if it was of same standards.
You can buy the back glass from places like aliexpress (china) from £10-20 and I think they are on ebay too.
There are videos explaining how to replace them (for z2, but should be same for z3)
Waterproofing is probably not gauranteed.

Really sorry to hear/see that, mate. From what I know - replacing it would be ridiculously simple - IF you can get a replacement. Might be worth to look in popular webstores selling parts. Also, try ifixit.com.
Sorry to be of little help but that's all I have right now.

You're right, it does look very simple to fix. The only issue I'd have with doing it myself would be are the parts they (witrigs.com) supply any good/official and would it not be water-resistant anymore.
I believe you need to use heat (for glue) to seperate the back glass. If you are worried just go to a local repair store. If you give it to Sony then you have time wasted in back and forth shipping and then processing. If you can live without your phone for a few weeks ship it to Sony. If you are lucky and have a Sony repair center nearby that would be better.
good to know I can do this myself

As @abhinav.tella suggested - heat does the trick.
I replaced battery in my Xperia Z with a hair dryer, a small suction pad I normally use to hang my towel and some glue that double acts as a sealant.
You simply heat the device up, and then use the suction pad to lift the glass - the glue should have melted by now - just be extra careful not to apply pressure on the cracked parts. Then scrape off the leftover glue from corners, when it cools down apply new one and put the glass panel inside - heat again, push it firmly and wait until it cools down again. ( some kits include glue that doesn't need to be heated up )
You can get all those for literally 20-30$. I'm sure you realize that, but it might be worth to mention that this will probably void your warranty.
Hey bro, I feel your pain it happen to me too.. I just updated my post.. There might be some information, that might help you.. You might want to check it out..

Yellow smudge on screen

Hi guys,
My Z3 just developed an ugly yellow smudge on the screen a little below the USB port . it gets darker when the phone gets hot. Google tells me it's the screens glue that has fallen on the screen. Service centre says it would take minimum of 20 business days to fix it. And these people take 2 months even (my brothers ZL never made it back repaired). Is there any fix I could do myself?? I hate the people at the service centre. They are irresponsible and lazy.

Could you post a pictures?
The only alternative i can think of is carrying out a screen replacement yourself, To prevent a less riskier attempt i'd suggest removing the Glass with the LCD however this requires you to take the back + front glass off i believe? Additionally it could make your device vulnerable to water after putting itb together

crack on top (see pictures) avoids warranty?

guys I have yellow marks on my screen due to over heating so i want to send it to replacement, the thing is , long ago I dropped my phone and it cracked a bit (see pictures)
will they consider the warranty avoided now because of such small crack?
thanks
Normally no, but I guess it depends on your country/store.
You see, for example in our country (Philippines), when buying the phone, the store offered me to get the extended warranty. You basically pay an extra $80 or so to cover accidental drops and water damage. So if you crack the glass (front or back), you damage the phone due to water getting inside, or even render the phone totally unusable, they'll fix it for free (or replace it if they can't repair it). It's best to check with your store, but normally that shouldn't be a problem.

wont they claim that the screen having yellow spots could be due to a fall that caused the crack? i know its not related but might they throw that in my face and start being smart on me ?...
