Just want to make sure I understand how this works (G930FD International) - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys! So, I purchased a Samsung Galaxy S7 (G930FD) from Amazon almost 2 years ago. I ordered what I thought was the International EU version, but they sent me instead it seems the Asia version. I say that because the keyboard switches between the qwerty keyboard and a chinese keyboard. Also because it looks like the phone is still available on Amazon and the model G930FD is now marked as the Asian version, likely Hong Kong. It's worked great, and I've really liked it. A while back, Samsung Pay was finally pushed to it, but it was all in chinese, and very difficult to use. I tried to update it with a newer version the other day and I think I screwed it up. It keeps trying to update it and failing, so now I can't use it anymore. So, I figure maybe this is an opportunity to try something new? So, I've been trying to read as much as I can from this site and others to see how it works, and I think I understand, I just want to make sure...
It sounds like the model G930FD and G930F are mostly interchangeable when it comes to OS's. It also sounds like there are OS's (aka ROM's I think?) that are native to different geographic areas, and each has it's own software and features etc. I Don't know that a US ROM would work on this model as it's an exynos, and the US models are not, so what if I chose a UK ROM to replace the Asian version with? Will that work? Also, if I put on an official ROM, does it still allow the OTA updates to occur for that country? I'd like to keep that happening if possible. Makes it a lot easier to keep things up to date... I have no interest in rooting, nor in using some hacked ROM, or anything like that. Just keep it simple.
So is that possible to do? I've found a couple of instructions here and there for how to do the actual flashing, using an app called Odin, and I've downloaded a ROM from the UK, the most recent one I can find from last month. I assume this will probably erase everything on my phone and I'll have to restore from a backup and re-install all my apps, etc?

Should I, shouldn't I

Hi folks,
I'm thinking of picking up the galaxy s, the samsung vibrant from t-mobile to use on my carrier.
i had a few questions and hope you fellas can help me out.
1st, what would be involved in unlocking it? Would I have any problems getting it unlocked?
Also i'm a total noob to android but i've been reading up. What exactly is "rooting"? will rooting allow me to put a stock 2.2 on it? is that even possible and is it recomended on this phone?
and lastly from people who have been using this phone, do you recommend getting it?
thanks
oh snap! i posted this in the wrong board. it should have been in the "Galaxy S I9000 General"
sorry mods.
Rooting allows you to get access to parts of the phone you otherwise wouldn't have access to. Compare it to having administrator rights on windows, you can access more files, do more stuff. Programs can perform more actions when your phone is rooted.
Putting 2.2 on it is completely seperate from that and at this moment is not possible. However, Samsung already stated that the first 2.2 update will be somewhere in august (not for euro/usa regions though) so perhaps withing the month after that it will also be available for other regions. Samsung has officially announced that it WILL be updated though, so no need to worry about that.
Without the 2.2 update it's already pretty damn fast though (with some tweaks its faster then the Nexus one WITH 2.2) so I would certainly already recommend it.
This is my first android phone (after symbian, windows mobile and more) and it's really easy to get used to and works just great. The screen is beautiful (good colors, vibrant although reading text on it is a less great experience) and it's very fast. Also feels light, in a good way, great screen, etc. I can totally recommend it.
ps. No idea what the status on unlocking is, mine was unlocked already so never looked into it.
you might want to make sure the frequency bands of the one you acquire will work on the carrier you want to use it on
if not, it may not work at all, or may not give you 3G data svc
personally i didnt think any phones are locked down anymore, at least not in the UK?
you should buy the phone, its the best ive owned, not saying its the best on the market but id like to hear of an arguement for why it isnt.
rooting was done on this device even before release, and with already 300k sales in south korea alone it looks like its going to have some great support and updates in the future

Recently purchased the Sensation, no US English :(

So I recently purchased an HTC Sensation online from Welectronics. So after getting the phone and trying to set it up, I noticed that it does not come with US English or even UK English in the Locale, it comes with English from Asian countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia etc.
I can live with it, as long as it's still English, but I would prefer to use US English or even Canadian English if possible. Is there any market apps I can use to get other locales installed onto my phone?
Furthermore, because I am in Canada and am using Wind Mobile, the notification bar does not display my "Wind Home", it only displays the operator network code. Again, any way I can change that?
Despite all this, I do hope HTC releases the S-Off ASAP so I can flash other roms onto it! Cheers
Bump. Same here, purchased from expansys.
Try this app:
https://market.android.com/details?id=jp.co.c_lis.ccl.morelocale&feature=search_result
haven't tried it on the Sensation, but it worked on my Desire HD.
Yup, tried that app and it's alright, at least I have standard English language now
hey mixmaven, did you purchase from expansys-usa. i haven't gotten it yet but want to know because i ordered one from them and they told me it was a US version with no bloatware, so i assume it would have US english on it.
hey chris, yes to expansys usa - and the more I used the phone the more I found that everything appeared to be correct, it just didn't have the English US option when I booted which was annoying. Selecting another english language triggers a few strange input screens. I see no major bloatware, looks like a clean version of sense. Has sound hound and a few other common apps.

mixmaven did you try the app that kuba1410 say to use and did it work. also how are you liking the phone. thanks for the reply.
not yet, I wanted to pull down a sense 3.0 rom and pull out the en us file. Haven't had time. I wonder if the dictonary contains more words if you are using the correct language.
Differentiation, assuming it work perfectly on your sensation did it change everything to US english without problems?
Anyone willing to provide a system dump off a US edition phone with no bloatware?
Locale2 did not fix the keyboard settings screen (Thai Keyboard is shown) and Vietnameses IME. However the keyboards are in english and work correctly so far.
Not sure where the files are saved in a US rom. I was hoping I could push them to the rom and then run setup again. S=On is killing me.

I just chose Canadian English, so far it seems to be alright, haven't really had too much problems.
Is there anything you would specifically want me to look at?
Differentiation just want to know that when i get mine that i can set things to US english using the app and work fine. is there any areas that are not working like google maps, weather..etc. thanks for the info.
thanks mixmaven for trying the app. Differentiation said he used canadian engliah and seems to work with little problem. dont know if you seen his post. you may want to try it and see what happens.
There is a thread in the development forum for the sensation that includes links to the official RUU roms for various regions of the world. I'm wondering if you would be able to flash one of these official roms to your phones. I think you should be able to flash a rom for an unbranded phone since I'm assuming your phones are unbranded. You might want to try it.
I don't have Canadian English only Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Philippines.
Time to look at the other ROM's

Yes my phone is unbranded.
As soon as S-Off becomes official, I think I will flash a North American rom onto my phone.

I don't know if the radios are compatible. North American Sensations are the T-mobile branded one, with 1700,2100,1900MHz 3G bands, and the one that went thru the FCC with 850/1900MHz bands for an unknown carrier. As far as the Vodafone/unbranded European/Asian phones, their 3G frequencies are listed as 900/AWS/2100MHz. I would make sure it won't brick your phone before trying to flash a "North American" rom onto your Sensation.
In the mean time, you might try one of the unbranded European roms and chose UK English.
Oh you are right! I have the 3G version, not the 4G.
I tried 3 different HTC Roms, all 3 ended with the 131 error of invalid ID.

Still no Lollipop UK

Hi guys.
I can see there are some threads with leaks of the rom or other country's releases but was hoping do get an OTA to install the Lollipop update.
I have read that apparently the UK has started to receive it not so long back but i have tried to request the update via the settings menu and also via Kies but it just says that it is up to date.
Any ideas when i should receive it or if any of the other zips in those other threads are complete and official and also okay to use for the UK?
My phone is the unlocked international version. It was originally from Three network but early on in it's life i grabbed an official zip from on here and installed it to remove the Three branding etc. It is unrooted.
i flashed the official firmware from sammobile its vodaone uk but i think they have made a mistake with it because its got german apps on it.
so i dont think there is one for the uk yet.
cheers mate.
thats what i didnt want, any sort of incorrect rom or even apps on it. seems odd that some info across the net state the UK as havcing started receiving it a while back but it still hasnt actually started to speed up with it's rollout

Same here. Have been expecting it since I heard Russia started getting it a number of weeks ago. Russia!
No OTA available to unlocked European phones - how can carriers be getting it before unlocked phones???
It really must be any day now here in the UK.

i should mention that my update seems to be from vodafone (my network) not from samsung.
im going to flash the vodafone stock kitkat see if i get the update that way. ill let you know how i get on.
UPDATE:
so i flashed the vodafone stock kitkat didnt get no update because i was still on BTU csc so i changed the csc to VOD and checked for the update again and it was there. both in software update settings on the phone and in kies.
Its rubbish isn't it, I got bored waiting and flashed the stock Poland rom....once again the UK is at the back of the queue ...
whats with the delay for BTU for UK ?
are there carrier timed exclusives ? bit of a joke that we're what up to 3 weeks now ?
Yeah I'm getting impatient too, been checking every day only to get disappointed, and SamsungMobileUK twitter doesnt help by saying its "Top secret knowledge", why they wouldnt want customers to know a date is beyond me.
I would like to think it should be soon, but I have really no expectations for them anymore, I don't even know how carrier versions went up before the UK international version, I thought the international version would be up first no?
Still have the beta(?) lollipop rom on my Note 3, seems pretty fine for now, haven't noticed any breaking bugs really, but I am still eager for the final version (And espicially 5.0.1 to bring mute back, which will be an EVEN longer wait probably, unless the wait is because they're going straight to 5.0.1?)
Blame Vodafone. They paid money to get the exclusive Lollipop release .That's why it's only available to the Vodafone and daughter companies, and not the unbranded and other companies. They do that quite often.

Honestly? That's really crap if true. Pretty bad deal for Vodafone too imo. I haven't heard of any promoting from them they're the only ones offering lollipop for note 3 and I can't see people selling their note 3's and buying a new one from Vodafone for lollipop either. This type of deal just seems like screwing most owners off and making Vodafone owners feel happy buying from them. Helps Vodafone look better too as they may not have been first providing the update if there was no such deal.
Still nothing for me. I've been restarting my phone some mornings before going into settings and hitting the check for update.
I seem to remember before, a method of clearing the data of a Google app that reset the clock i think and it sometimes helped get an update sooner. I can't remember what app it was though.

none of that is true, its works of your csc code. BTU is unbranded, VOD is vodafone H3G is three O2U is o2 EE,EVR is ee and so on lol
so what ever you got on yor phone if its unbranded or on a network is when you get it.

That's pretty much the general idea with these deals, customer binding. Keep your customers happy by being able to tell them 'We're faster than everyone else. Look, they don't have Lollipop yet, and we do!'
They don't advertise with it because the decision came from HQ, but every country has its own marketing team. Most of the time the marketing team has no idea it was even done.
On top of that, people don't care enough to go to a provider because it got the firmware first (They'd all buy or flash Unbranded if they did), but they're exceptional good at whining about it when others get the update first and they don't have it yet.
(The T-Mobile forums are a nightmare right now. And they(Samsung) cancelled 5.0 for the S5 temporarily before rolling out a new one, making it even worse as the branded version is always spectacularly late.. "Why do they have the update? I can't download it, but my [neighbour, sibling, friend] has the same phone and same provider, and they have the update? Are you blocking me?"x500 *sigh*)
That's how marketing works, make people feel bad about other brands, and better about yours.
I know it sounds a bit... conspiracy theory-ish. But if you look at the list of released updates, it's pretty obvious.
The last one came out on 01 February 2015, so with luck we'll see the rest in a week or two. (My attempt at optimism isn't working, is it? ) Depending on how much they paid it's either 1 month or 3. (HTC once paid several million to Google to get the exclusive release for 3 months.)

On Sammobile! It's from today! (It's the second Poland version. That's promising, because the rest usually follows)
Your updates are all dependent on your Carrier / CSC.
Just think for a minute. Samsung have you by the short and curlies. If you go custom rom, they jump up and down saying that your warranty is invalid due to knox counter. Biggest pile of poop ever!
The carriers have you by the short and curlies because of this CSC junk. The carriers have you by them as well, because of the CSC's.
Why would any business want to upgrade you at the same time as releasing 'flagship' models. A carrier / manufacturer would want to shift more 'new' units rather than look after it's current, loyal, customer base. Samsung have released the N4, S6 and edge in a relatively short period of time. Considering their market share is falling, what would you rather do? Sell boatloads of new stuff, or encourage people to keep their older phone? Realisticaly, just HOW much better is the N4 or S6 than it's preceding model? The S6 doesn't even have the option of an SD card!! As I have said on other boards, how many times can you re-invent the wheel?? I turned down a note 4 upgrade because it didn't do things, noticeably, better than my N3.
As you are probably aware, loyalty is worth nothing to businesses these days. Who gets the best deals? New customers. Once the S6, edge and N4 sales slow down, the N3 will probably receive the Lollipop update.
If I were in your situation, I would download the Vodafone BTU or Polish XEO and use the app manager to freeze the apps you don't require. Lollipop is OK and it is very smooth, apart from the material design and WAY too much white, but as you are aware, you will end up with an updated bootloader. You need the updated bootloader etc or your camera will misbehave! I have the Vodafone BTU, Echoe Rom based rom and have no issues. I have also tried the stock Vodafone BTU and the Polish one and report no Issues. My wifes N3 is running the XEO, and it is rock solid. The polish rom only has a couple of polish apps that can be deleted without any worries. Best of all, they are official, and can be flashed via Odin without tripping Knox.
I also heard that Vodafone 'paid' to be first for 5.0. The reason vodafone probably did this is because they are now pushing sim only tarrifs and have an advertising campaign on the telly. O2 have also started the sim only push, but their updates are usually so late, people forget what phone they were for!! The Polish XEO usually get the updates pretty quick as there is an R&D department tied with samsung, and sim only is big over there.
Samsung are losing me.
I'm also not happy to wait so long. Checking every day and no luck. Very disappointed in Samsung. Sick of my buggy Kitkat firmware from them that can't remember default apps to save its life and having to constantly choose Chrome to view internet links.
Oh yes, they are good enough to update the 1 year old Note 3 and say that they will even update the Note 2 with Lollipop eventually, but who would want it, when Android M will be released right after, as they took so long.
Funny how LG and Motorola especially were able to be so quick to give their devices the Lollipop update.
My next phone won't be from Samsung.
I got bored of waiting for the UK release so this morning and have flashed recent Polish update, I'd advise you guys to do that same.
Doesn't trip knox, don't have to do a full wipe, English language maintained, very simple.

Been more and more tempted to do this, but wasn't sure if there would be a problem flashing it on a UK unbranded Note 3?
Also is there a way to back up data and restore it? I read helium could do it, but not sure how well it works. I just want to keep my game saves and etc.
Also there will be no problem flashing the UK version of lollipop when it eventually comes out?
I do have the beta version of lollipop already though. Not sure about the whole CSC thing either
I have the retail UK unbranded note 3, no problem at all flashing the Polish bob6 rom over it, just follow the simple steps on sam's firmware.
In terms of backing up I think you would need to root and use something like titanium, I didn't bother, as I said you don't need to wipe so all things like sms, game progress etc is not erased.
If you want to flash the UK version when it comes out I suspect there will be no problem at all to do so, I doubt I'll bother though, to all intents and purposes this behaves like the stock UK firmware would.
Just flashed it with the lollipop poland firmware before. Phone felt RED HOT after updating, ha ha. Seemed a little laggy after the first boot, but a restart seemed to fix all that.
It feels a little faster than previously actually, will see if the battery life is better on tuesday where the battery is put to the test really.
Good to see there doesnt seem to be any issues! Will flash to the UK version when samsung decide to release it...really bad these sort of exclusivity deals go on.

No root at all. Apparently Samsung isn't a fan of root anymore. Or, carriers aren't. No progress at all so you'll be better off buying a new phone. This one is junk. A major downgrade from the original J3, which had 2 gigs of RAM and an AMOLED display. Oh, and it had NFC.
Well honestly imho this phone is worlds better than the core prime i was using. And it is fast especially how i got it set up. Carriers are what ruin the devices we buy as they want things locked to their spec list, i know this personally as i used to work for radioshack and was able to compare the same devices for different brands. Each had slight mods done to the setups but mostly the hardware was close to baseline over the big three, att, sprint and verizon. And essentially most straight talk stuff is either verizon or att anymore so if a root works for that device it should take for ours one would think.
Also its nkt that samsung wont allow root, its a deal thing with certain providers. My wife has a phone from life wireless and we asked around if it could be ported to another carrier and life wireless said it could not as the refurb stuff they provide for people is software locked to their system. But we ended up getting another device and was able to use the life sim for the new phone and kept her number and service. We just recently in the U.S. pass a law in federal court saying its illegal for any carrier to deny service or warrenty for any rooted device. But of course apple isnt a part of that. Only androids as far as i know.
Literally just took this out of the package for my sons first phone. I figured all these cheaper smart phones would be easily rooted. Im bummed out now
And still no one has tried to get this model rooted. I have lost faith with xda on this phone
Here is a qeustion for you. Since I know that the unlocked variant j3 firmware can be used to flash on to att he and be able to root, is there any way being they come from the same hardware and all that the Verizon j3 7.0 firmware would work on our Luna pro straight talk model. I know that all of the hardware is the same between the Verizon and my S.T. models from all the spec sheets I have came across. At this point I don't care for root, I just want the update to 7.0.
By the by I'm currently pulling the firmware off Google drive right now.
well i have searched and dug and so far have found that these phones use the very same logic board: sprint , verizon , tracfone/straight talk and a smj327r4(u.s cell?). and i managed to get the verizon firmware downloaded for the smj327vl, but really need an extra device to test if it works to install on the st/tracfone variant. if it works then we would have a valid android 7.0 on the luna pro model.

I have a spare sm-s327vl to try the firmware flash what is the google drive link???
I'm not sure on how to add the drive link. am adding it to my Dropbox so I'll post it here in a couple minutes hopefully
Found a way...lol

It's labeled j327vl. And thanks for being a guinea pig for testing it. Let me know if it works!
What I do know is that it is in multiple parts..... For flashing in Odin. So I guess that's how the newer phones get their files now thru Odin for a stock flash. The last phone I odin'd was a galaxy core prime and it was a single file flash.
Any news on how it went with flashing the Verizon firmware?
Im going to purchase a spare Luna pro on payday and test this out myself to see if it works.
Joker do you have any news? Did you get it flashed. Anything it would be nice to have some input.
Nobody can download it because it redirects back to their own Drive. That's not the link to share. You have to go to that file & allow link sharing. Then copy/paste that link here

g955fxxu1aqj5 flash

Hello XDA,
So, this is my first question ever, even tho I have followed XDA for about 10 years now... I used to flash phones back when xperia x10 was a big thing, however I have not done it in a while, now I'm looking to upgrade my phone S8+ to android 8, as I got it from my carrier here (Kolbi) however I'm possitive there will never be an update from them as is a local-only carrier, and no-one here cares about this so I really don't think it will ever happen. (anytime soon that is)
Anyway, I have g955fxxu1aqj5 and I was wondering if installing another firmarware for say just G955F, would work? (I dont need to have carrier specific firmware) I just care about the phone working fine, camera, conectivity, hardware basically, so my questions is if I can try installing other firmware like this for example:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/how-to/guide-flash-oreo-g955fxxu1crb7-using-t3755789
Thanks in advance.
