Huawei Mate 9 Fingerprint sensor - Android 8 Oreo - Huawei Mate 9 Questions & Answers

This thread is created to find a fix to the Huawei Mate 9 fingerprint sensitivity (or lack there of) sensor issue, an issue that also plagues the Google Pixel phones.
Since upgrading to Android 8 I have found the registering a fingerprint with the phone is next to impossible. The sensitivity of the sensor has been cut down from Android 7.x. I have left messages to @HuaweiUSA in a DM to them and in the general public areas of Twitter. I have also posted this to other social venues.
Now, without resorting to rooting and changing a kernel file, I am asking others what can be done to fix this. Before you respond, please note:
1. Yes I cleaned the sensor
2. Yes my fingers are clean.
3. Yes I actually have fingerprints.
4. This thread is to see who else has this problem and to provide fixes/workarounds for those with the problem.
I do note that the fingerprint sensor does work somewhat well after to register your fingerprint. It is only the enrollment of a fingerprint that is the hardest.
If anyone has fixes, please note them here. Many thanks.

UPDATE: Huawei's official answer to the fingerprint sensor problem is to perform a factory reset after you upgraded your phone to Android 8.
Another issue that will affect fingerprint resolution: users REBRANDING their phone.
Huawei has specific firmware to specific brandings. So if you changed your C185 or C900 to C567 (or any other rebranding), you need to change back and then try the upgrade, reboot, factory reset method to fix things. Tech support said this would solve a number of issues beyond just fingerprint issues. Including call quality issues, networking, etc.

My wife updated her Mate 9 to Oreo using OTA, she received the 363 (C432) version directly.
After the update she lost her SD card, ringtones etc...
After a factory reset she struggled to get her fingerprints recognised, as if the phone could not "read" her finger. I did at the end but it was clear the sensor lost its sensitivity...When I tried to store my fingerprint in her phone it worked a lot better but still more difficult then on my Mate 9.
Her phone is an original German phone and not a rebranded model and the factory reset did not solve the issue...
So your not the only one facing this issue.

i use my m9 with OREO (b361) without problems so far! I have no recognition delays more than on my Honor 7 or my LG G5!
i did a factory reset after upgrading and have registered two fingers twice! This is a little bit tricky because often i got the notification that my finger was known by system. But it is possible to register every finger twice if you are a little bit patient.
Please try different finger positions too.

We tried different positions...I stated that compared to my mate 9 running on Oreo the mate 9 from my wife - also running on Oreo has a fingerprint reader who became less sensitive after the update. We have 2 mate 9's so we can compare both of them...

Our both mate 9 too.

How do I downgrade from android 8 (oero) to android 7 (nougat) ? I have serious problems with the fingerprint sensor after the upgrade.
Thanks.

Depending on your model, connect your phone to your PC annd open hi suite (if it doesn't automatically), click on update and if your model version is supported, you'll have an option to go back to an earlier build.

Couple things I find that works. About once a month (more if you use your phone more), I will take an alcohol wipe, and clean off the fingerprint sensor.
Next, I have found that once in a while, my index finger on my left hand is REALLY hard to use, but the index finger on my right hand is very fluid and fast. I simply go into the finger print settings, delete the one that isn't working well, recalibrate it and everything is good. Only had to do that once.

I find the sensor pretty fast, even the smallest portion of the finger seems to be registered and the phone opens, hundreds time per day.
BUUUUT, when trying to answer I call I have to rub my whole finger several seconds until it actually answers, I end up with a ringing phone on my ear waiting for it to recognize me.

I had the same problem after updating. Had to reset from factory and fingerprint management was impossible. It would vibrate after every try then fail. Tried dozen times, then factory reset again, same problem. Finally got it to work by pressing my index very hard against the sensor while rotating it. Took a few tries but it worked. Once it was recorded it now works perfectly. Strange. Hope it helps someone

Haha
cuz you need to hold your finger on sensor a few sec in order to answer calls xD
to avoid mistakes

I rebranded my Mate 9, re-installed a factory image -- thank you FunkyDruid, and then the fingerprint menu settings disappeared. I would hate to format it if it's not gonna help.. Annoying though..

Mess around buggy Marshmallow update for Moto G 2015

Hi everyone, moto global
Not a surprise in such a short time after Moto G 2016 has been updated to MM 6.0 internet is flooded with complaints. I had my update in UK for around a week now.
I have manufactory reset device since then twice due to following reasons and which did not solve the problem :
I am literally fuming because new update took everything away that made this phone super phone.
1) Battery time got much worse, neither my habits changed nor apps I use. I would say by 30% .
Simple browsing and reading drains 40% just in one hour.
2) Other thing is display touch issues. No matter how gentle or harder I press my finger or use fro same purpose other thinkers display thinks I want to open link, photo, jump into other page. In general open something or anything that is possible on current page. That happens flickering finger up normal speed , slower ,or faster doesn't matter.
There is clearly an issue because I had none of it while phone was on Lollipop.
3) I also noticed phone is slower opening apps, getting in and out of app , inside browser loading time got longer.
4) Why on earth would Moto not allow to downgrade it to Lollipop? I don't care you have MM6 I want to get back to Lollipop until you sort out mess around buggy MM.
......
What problems do you have?
People, please, stop exercising your flashing, roming muscle and how cool you are at that. This thread is for identifying actual/present problem on MM based Moto G 2015 .
The issue with the behavior of the touch screen is what really gets to me. I scroll and let my finger of the screen and it registers that as a press and opens some link if my finger happens to be over one as I lift it off.
I have two decent ways of reproducing some of my issues with the screen (being able to reliably reproduce problems is paramount if you want to report problems).
1. Go to http://www.msnbc.com/videos . Scroll a bit down the page and then move your finger rapidly up and down. No issue. It follows your finger perfectly. Now start playing a video on the page and try again. At least to me, after a fairly short while it simply stops moving and no longer registers my touch. I can lift my finger and put it back down and now it moves again. There's no freaking way playing a video should have priority in the kernel over keeping track of my touches. I get it's not the fastest phone in the world and i would be fine with a lot of lagging. But don't just "forget" i have my finger on the screen. Something is very clearly wrong. Not exactly sure how this was in lollipop, but I'm noticing a lot of touch screen issues in marshmallow.
2. If I scroll to the top of my app drawer (by moving my finger down) and try to scroll even further (which obviously I can't) it often takes the place where I lift my finger as a press and opens that app. If anyone can confirm this kind of behavior it will.be eaiser to go to Motorola with this
I erased the stock rom and put CM12.1 ... Solved my problems!

1. I have this issue to though it takes me quite a few times to move my thumb up and down before it freezes.
2. " and try to scroll even further (which obviously I can't) it often takes the place where I lift my finger as a press and opens that app" that's exactly what I have on facebook, androidauthority etc. Instead of page gliding further it registers finger as for press. This issue is so obvious on my phone. I can reproduce it fairly easy.

You can downgrade to Lollipop 5.1.1 from Marshmallow..
Upgraded my Moto G 2015 to MM and had same issues like yours so I decided to downgrade to Lollipop and battery life is awesome in Lollipop... 5+ hours Screen on Time.

Once you upgraded to MM factory resetting will not downgrade...
You have to manually flash the firmwares files for Moto G 2015 Lollipop
I am also suffering from the touch issue
I tried downgrading but it fails to write the bootloader, etc. Some detailed instructions on how to do this using fastboot would be awesome...
Can you downgrade to 5.1.1 without an unlocked bootloader?
And since the ghost input issue seems to be a software issue, can't we just tweak it somehow?
I don't experience the same issues. I really like MM, but I don't think that is much better or different from LL. But I think I have better battery, better image and no touch issues. Performance doesn't appear much different.
I upgraded from OTA and have a XT1541. Did a factory reset after the upgrade.
This upgrade to android 6.0 on my Moto g 3rd gen is killing me
- Random bouts of slowness, if it had a hard drive with spindles I'm sure I would hear it ticking away constantly
- lag when typing into search bar etc
- lag when hitting home button
- the unintended link-clicking thing when simply browsing a webpage is infuriating especially considering how SLOW it is to bring up the link then go back because you don't bloody want it opened I. The first place. aGhHHHhG!!!! ajdfhaahbs#!&#@[email protected]
- I've started receiving low battery warnings on a daily basis when I have in general not considered battery EVER during the day with this phone
- apps have been crashing or constantly bringing up the dialogue box about not responding and wait/kill it
- Gmail notification is inconsistent - I'm not getting status bar notifications for all new email, can't find a pattern - does work sometimes
Basically what was a decent phone has now turned into a P.O.S
What is actually better about MM ?
I want to downgrade to Lollipop - considering I'm taking matters into my own hands is Lollipop the best option?
Whats the best way to safely flash the phone to proposed O/S? Link to approved method please and THANKS

I did twice. Didn't work for me. Now I did hard reset. Just signed in with my google account and nothing else. Not even updating apps . Will give a couple of days and see what's happening.
I can confirm after few days of hard reset issues persist. Sending phone back.

I have problems with touchscreen too. I've documented them here: https://youtu.be/_hMp9vb2WUI
Same here. Touchscreen is driving me crazy since i updated my xt1541 to stock MM.
Specially when i scroll up/down but the phone reacts as if i clicked. (factory reset and wiping cache didn't solve the issue).
i fixed the issue wirh touch screen by just removing the screen protector (glass)

I have exactly the same problem. I think is related to the size of finger. Also at mine moto g, with the app that you used in your video, using 2 inch i having the problem, using the indices no So, with smaller touched area the problem not appear
About the ghost touch, i have no idea what they have combined in motorola, but seems that the touch is "software" managed (like a 3d render made by the cpu instead of gpu), and it seems that with the cpu under stress the problem worsens, and problably this is why it does not always happen.
I made another test: if you enable developer option and you activate the cursor position option (i don't know if is the exact english name, i'm italian), with 3 touch have a huge lag, with 4 is impossible to draw cursor positions. About this test i don't know if is a problem of touch or is a problem of developers tools. Is necessary to check with another android 6 smartphone.
I also found another bug about the energy saving. Yesterday, when the battery has dropped below 15%, the energy saving has been activated automatically, as i set, but after connecting the charger it is not deactivated. I had to repeatedly juggle with the power saving enabling option to disable it (notification bar and buttons bar still remained red even with the power saving option turned off). Today I realized that the phone lags so obscene and discovered that, although it was not notified of the power saving mode, only 1 core was active with variable frequency. I had to again turn on and off the power saving mode to have all the core active (in cpu-z the governor was ever interactive but with only cpu0 active before re enable and disable power saving mode). Some happened this thing?
F...k, i was so glad I bought a motorola moto g i hope they solve these problems.

anybody else problems with the fingerprint sensor?

Hey all,
I experience problems with the fingerprint sensor. It often doesn't recognize my finger on the first try but I need to try it several times before my finger is recognized. Or face unlock solves the issue and thus the finger print problem is avoided. I also deleted the finger print and set it up new several times but the problem persists.
Anybody else got the same problem?

Nope, my fingerprint sensor works perfectly fine.
Yours may be defective.
Take off the case from the phone. Make sure u scan ur finger correct.
If is not helping factory reset.
If is not helping call oneplus...open return due defective hardware
This finger print sensor reads much differently than what I am used to. For me it's literally a quick tap with my finger. If I hold like I would with Nexus 6p it won't read.
Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app
The sensor is really quite small and not perfect. I scanned the same finger three times (different parts of the tip) and now it works quite well. You will get occasional errors stating that the same finger has been scanned already, but if you keep trying it works
It's not a perfect sensor or even close, I've had to add a finger twice to get it to unlock properly most of the time. I add it as a new finger.

I bought the OnePlus 6 and I came from the OnePlus 3 and I ran into a similar issue. It helps if you input your fingerprint multiple times
For me its not that it doesn't recognize the finger, but sometimes it just doesn't even recognize that I have placed my finger on the sensor to check if it's mine. I have no idea why this happens
Mine works great. Sometimes I think it's even too sensitive, I turn the phone off and it comes back on when my finger is still in the vicinity of the sensor. Try to wipe it off with some mild water-dishwasher solution to get any dust/body oils off of it.

Are you running a custom kernel? I had this issue on Stock OS using Flash Kernel. Reflashing back to stock fixed it for me
My fingerprint recognition was always failing. The sensor was working because it would vibrate whenever I put my finger on the sensor but it never recognized it. I contacted OnePlus Support and the first thing they recommended is to see if there was an upgrade available. There was one - so I upgraded - not really thinking it would help at all. But miraculously, after the upgrade, fingerprint recognition works like a champ.
Try upgrading.

For me I had this same issue but not initially. The first 4 days I ran into zero issues. It worked every time. I then decided to start tinkering and installed the XXX mod. It wasn't quite what I was looking for so I decided to return to stock. At this point I flashed the stock rom via phone update menu. Then I factory reset and set up again. I noticed memory management issues and also problems with my fingerprint reader not recognizing my finger as easily. Re doing them didn't help. So I thought maybe I would use the fastboot method of restoring the software like the Nexus/Pixel roms. I did that and it flashed successfully but had the same issues. So I decided to manually flash each partition on both slots. Then I set up again. Still had issues. I figured at this point it was definitely a hardware issue because I felt I couldn't be any closer to a stock, out of the factory condition. But I was wrong. The msm tool that uses the Qualcomm drivers is the "Factory Image" I was looking for. It completely restored my phone to the condition it was when I unboxed it. I know logically there shouldn't be a difference but it flashed or fixed something on a certain partition that got changed when I was tinkering(I assume). So long story short. Try the msm tool if you think you have hardware issues before you rule out the software.
Fix-Fingerprint sensor not responsive
Entered to safe mode fixed the issue for me after a lot of trying to make it responsive.
Go into battery /battery optimization /hit the... Menu (advanced optimization) uncheck advanced optimization.
If on she is saving battery in sleep mode.
The issue you guys are describing is simular on rear sensors.
I did the above and it helped. Give it a try.

Problems in Nokia 8 [Discussion Group]

Hi Nokia 8 user's ,
I have been hearing many complaints about Nokia 8,so I decided to create a thread where I can collect all the complaints about phone and try to find the solution to the problems.
Note ??
The major problems and suggestions go to the Nokia 8 feedback box.
Something's??
->? I use is
- Asus Pixel Master Camera(for Pro Mode & scenary pics)
-Google Camera(Selfies,human pictures)
Please note: Slow motion is not working!!
It's a bit too big for me?
My only complaints are since almost a year of using Nokia 8: LCD burn in is so goddamn bad, even my 3 years old Galaxy Note 4 hasn't have any burn ins, and fingerprint scanner is a bit too small so you might miss a few times. Oh and stock camera app is so so at best, GCam FTW

I have mailed the Nokia team and they asked to install app to fix it like LCD burn in wiper.
Then I also want to write down my "problems":
- Since the update to Pie I have no Bluetooth connection to the Smartwatch (Ticwatch E, Wear OS 2.2)
Resetting to factory settings did not change the problem. Neither the clock nor the phone.
- During any execution of an app, the screen suddenly stops gesturing. Swiping or pressing buttons is no longer possible. This occurs about 4-5 times a week. The only solution: Reboot the device via Volume + Power Button.
Adoptable storage
What about not being able to use SD cards as adoptable / internal storage? Has anyone tinkered with or fixed this yet?
I am on my 2nd brand new 8 in a week and neither work for handsfree loud speaker calls. On Oreo, tried resetting both. No change

It's bound to software essentially. Many apps from Google play store automatically choose SD card as storage for OBB files. If you want to enforce everything to be installed on a ticking bomb then you are free to do it with magisk modules at absolutely no effort.

From what I gather from doing research it sounds like you would need to do a system reset and then disable FBE (file based encryption) as this is the reason why using an sd card as internal storage does not work with the N8.
Sounds like the way to do this is to do it through a modified TWRP/boot image. Just wondering if anyone has done it yet. Was thinking of making a forum discussion about it. I get your point, but in the interest of development and utilization of a device to its fullest potential (aka the ability to move apps to the disk in the interest of increased storage/backup), I also think this feature would be welcome.
Magisk has this functionality? I just got my N8 last week and am playing with all this stuff, just sideloaded on the pie update but havent rooted or flashed a rom yet in the interest of keeping things mostly stock. If Magisk has the functionality then cool, just think it would be interesting to create a custom ROM/tweak to have the functionality to store and use the apps from SD as well as the onboard.
My complaints so far:
- no notification light
- sound quality very poor when making a call
- laggy performance sometimes
- fingerprint scanner too small
- on the Pie beta: rebooting the phone erases the registred fingerprints sometimes
- camera slow and unreliable
the one and the most annoying issue i have with this phone is : the screen sometime half dead ( artifact ) =))) just a normal day , woke up , check the time on phone , and wow !!!!!! the screen half dead =)) , waste a lot of time for replacement ...

I did a factory reset this morning. So far the GPS is working normal again. Will keep checking if problem appears again.
The charging problem still remains, after charging by original charger, it will stop charging after a few seconds. Any solution? No, clear cache, storage and soft reset is not solution.

I have had charging problems a few times. Charging stops after a few seconds or charging is intermittent.
Solved it with compressed air
The cause was cruft in the usb-c port. Pocket lint get pushed down and accumulated in the bottom of the port.
Try to blow it out or use something thin and non-conducting (toothpick?) to get it out.
Has anyone faced camera blur problem??

Fingerprint sensor not works with miui11

I have a problem with the fingerprint sensor.. Since I switched to miui 11 with android 10 the sensor worked at times. It works for a day or two, then the menu disappears from the settings and i can no longer use it.
I try tu update vendor partition, wipe data, format data, reinstall new rom with all wipes, reinstall stock rom with Mi FlashTool, any solution works..When i wipe all, it works for a while and than, suddenly, doesn't work anymore!!
I have Mix 2S, i'm sure that is not an hardware problem..
Replace fingerprint sensor
I don't know why you say that you're sure that it's not a hardware problem, but to me, it sounds like the sensor is broken. I suffered this issue in my own Mi Mix 2s and it was caused because the "cable" of the sensor was folded (it's not really a cable, it's more like a flat plastic connector) and it worked one day and not the next. I finally decided to fix it by myself, looking for a youtube video about disassembling the phone and with these tools and the replacement sensor it was pretty easy (and quite cheap, frankly). I hope it helps!

I have exactly the same issue. After Android 10 update the fingerprint sensor works for a while. After one day I recognized that the fingerprint sensor is not working anymore. And there are no options or settings in the system settings anymore. So I assume a software problem.

No, I have no idea how to fix. Seems we have to wait till the next update from Xiaomi, which hopefully will fix the problem. It is really boring.

Your assumption is wrong... these options will not show up if the system can't find the fingerprint sensor... Had the same problem and it turned out to be a hardware fault, exactly like mentioned by Kaliotto. You can do a simple test via CIT (tap multiple times on kernel-version). You will find a fingerprint sensor check in there. If it does not find the sensor, it is broken, simple as that. Replacing the sensor is really no voodoo, did it in a timeframe of 30 minutes myself and it was really the first time I ever opened a smartphone. And the parts are really cheap.

I read on differents sites a lot of people who had problems with fingerprint sensor after upgrading to miui 11 with android 10..i don't think that all of us had hardware problem at the same time of the upgrading, it's very strange...
so, to avoid any doubt, i'm searching a new fingerprint sensor..the site suggested in the second posts seems to have problems with payment, any times i try to buy with paypal o credit card, the payment was refused..so i'm searching another reliable site..
I solved the problem. In my case it was defenitely a software bug. I tried to run the fingerprint test at CIT and the phone reminded me that the phone is protected by a PIN and can not enroll fingerprint information. So I switched of the PIN protection and the fingerprint test runs positive. Since that time, the fingerprint options in the setting was back again and I was able to setup the fingerprint sensor as usually.
So I thing the deactivation of PIN protection was the solution to get the fingerprint sensor working again.

So, you only disabled pin in the lockscreen (and set swipe method to unlock the phone)??
I tried now disabling pin and restarted the phone, but no options in the settings menu
Can you give me more details? Thanks
Update! After one day of use, I have to say, that the fingerprint sensor still does not work proper. After a while the fingerprint sensor stops working again. I played around with the settings, disabled the PIN protection and start the phone several times and than the fingerprint sensor was working again for a while. There is still something wrong. Also the CIT test sometimes pass and sometimes fail. Maybe it is hardware failure after all.
What I did: I disabled the password (PIN) protection, means no protection at all. After that I was able to run the fingerprint sensor test at CIT ( as cdfs wrote). This test was pass and the settings to configure the fingerprint sensor appears again in the system settings and the sensor worked for a while.
Since this procedure the function of the sensor is not consistent and I can not definitely say what to do to get it works. In the meantime I think that all the described workaround just works by accident.
NEWS: i changed stock kernel with two modded kernel (Twisted v22 && LawRun9.0_60hz) and fingerprint start to works again!!!
So, my idea was real: it's a software problem!!!!
Try it yourself and give me your feedback
Hi,
I had also the issue that the fingerprint sensor was not recognized. I replaced it.
Then the option was there again but it doesn't read any fingerprints.
The CIT test fails by the last step "Pixel open test"
Then I got a second new fingerprint sensor and replaced it again.
The test fails again in the last step!
These are the CIT messages:
Autotest: Testing
SPI test: Success
Reset pin test: Success
Interrupt pin test: Sucess
Pixel open test: FAIL
So I would say it is a Software Issue
Hello,
so I at the end found some users, having exactly that problem!
I bought a new sensor and changed it. Pixel Opem Test failed.
I bought another sensor with the same result: Pixel Open Test failed.
Is there a usefull solution?

Fingerprint reader issue

My fingerprint reader worked well on Android 10. Since it upgraded to Android 11I have been having issues. I try to scan my print to unlock and it says no match found. I removed them and decided to add them again. Now it either tells me to press harder or to cover entire sensor. Is there a fix for this?

I had a similar experience, but my phone didn't upgrade, the problem just started out of the blue. I went in and deleted all of the existing fingerprints, and re-registered each of my thumbs twice. Not sure why, but having a duplicate of each finger seemed to do the trick. From that point on, unlock has no hesitation.
