N920PVPS3DRA1 appears to have broke fast wireless charging - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note5

Hi,
As the title says I think it might have broken fast wireless charging. I actually had the phone running stock on the wireless charger and all was fine. It had charged from 14% to around 65% when I saw that there was a system update. It was only small so I figured it was the monthly security update. After installing it I can no longer use fast wireless charging. I put the phone on the charger and first i get the charging message, then the fast charging message and immediately after I get "wireless charging paused". I tried my wife's S7 and that fast charges fine. After looking it up on various sites I tried all the tricks. Changing the cord, changing the charger, trying different outlets, safe mode, factory rest, everything. Nothing works. I can use it for regular charging if I change the cord or charger brick, but that defeats the purpose of having fast charging. Has anyone else experienced this with the latest update? And does anyone have any tips or fixes for it? Samsung and Sprint are clueless. The only answer I get it basically bring it in for repair and pay us to fix it.
Thanks.

I don't know about Fast Wireless, I just have the regular wireless charger but wired fast charging is working on stock and even very modified software. Just do a Factory Reset and see if that fixes it.

Thanks for the reply.
Wired seems to be working as normal. I tried a factoy reset and still the same. I looked in Samsung's official forums and it looks like on the S8 sometime before Christmas a security update did the same thing to some phones. It's a pity we can't uninstall the security patch and see if that would have fixed it.

It is and old phone...you can go back with Odin but that will trigger the KNOX...

I think it was broken before that! I was having this issue well before and they offered to replace my charger then wanted me to send the phone in to get replaced (im rooted so its not going back) it charges on a non fast charger fine

Security Patch Rest
You have to do a complete factory reset. Install N920PVPU3DQC5 firmware through odin. Thats the first n920p 7.0 firmware.
It will update the firmware about 7times to the current firmware.
you can stop the updating at anytime between updates.
you have to use the N920PVPU3DQC5_Recovery.zip from android filehost.

Hard Brick?

I believe I have a hard brick, but not sure about diagnosis or options. I put my phone on the charger last night, and it was dead this morning. I have been able to get it to boot twice only for it to shut off immediately due to lack of charge. I have plugged the phone into 3 different USB chargers and none of them appear to be charging my phone, however they all work on my Nexus 7. There is no LED on to indicate it is charging as it normally would. I cannot get into recovery or download mode. Any suggestions?
A little background about my specific situation:
I have had my S3 since launch, and have had no issues with it. I have had it rooted since the bootloader was overcome, and have run custom ROMS ever since. Most recently, I have been running CM 11 with the latest nightly being from early Feb. (not sure which date). I have CWM installed, and up til this point, my phone was working fine. I did get occasional random reboots since the latest nightly that I flashed, but the phone remained completely functional.
EDIT: It is not a brick problem, it is a charging issue. I can charge my phone in the car, but not through a wall charger or connected to a pc. When plugging into a pc, it does not register anything at all.

It's possible that your usb port is bad, but try to clean the inner contacts of the port first. You could try to plug into your PC instead of wall charger see if it works. In anycase if it worked with PC, but not wall charger or both, you need to replace the usb board which can be purchase for cheap on Ebay.

Do you have an external battery charger or a spare charged battery? Give it a try and see what happens.

Do you know of someone who has an S3? Perhaps try swapping batteries with a charged one from a friend/associate, or test with a spare from a verizon store. At least then you can rule out a charging/USB charge port/battery issue vs something else

I don't know anyone. I am going to try and seek help at the verizon store, but they seem so useless whenever I go, and I think they will be more motivated to sell me a new phone.
Well I got my phone to work. I pulled the battery off and just cleaned out some of the dust that had collected. I assume it was just not getting a good connection. Thanks for the suggestions though

Turns out, it only worked on my car charger. The problem persists outside of my car. I cannot charge either through a wall outlet or on a USB cord connected to a PC. I have tried 2 instances of each all with their own cables. My car charger works fine though.
Anyone experience a similar problem? I am going to try and wipe and flash a new ROM, hoping that will fix it.

Phone says it's charging but won't.. the animation icon that indicates....

When trying to plug my verizon s3 galaxy into usb cable to charge, the charging indicator comes on... but I don't think it's actually charging because there is usually an animation indicator in the top bar that shows it's charging. It's been 3 hours and I'm at 0%. I can power my phone on long enough to see it's still on but it will power off because it's still not really charging (or charging at all?). Unplugged, phone won't power on of course. Plugged in, I just have power on for about a few minutes. I've had this when it was released, so since 2012 I have not have to replace any batteries or cable.
I've tried using a seperate usb cable charger, and same thing. What could be the issue? I want the usb port repair to be the last resort so please help! So here's my plan so far:
-contact cleaner/gas duster (is there a difference between the two?)
-replace batteries.
Any troubleshooting/diagnosis I could do myself to find out the problem? Anything else I should do?
I'm not the most tech-savvy person so please be nice and thorough. Lol.
-----update------
I don't want to do factory reset because I don't want to lose my personal data. My phone now says 8% but drains right away the moment I use it. My laptop won't read it to allow me to transfer pics, vids, other data. I installed a battery current widget witch reads:
3.22V (which is good since the battery is 3.8V)
103.3F internal temperature
and 0mA ----> So this is the root of my problem. Why is it reading 0mA? But very slowly charging to around 8% when powered off?
Try Factory reset. If that doesn't work, it could be the charging port has come lose from the solder/logic board.

Could be one of two things, either the battery itself or its the charging port. I've seen it on my gfs S3 which is up to the latest NE1 ota and she has had it replaced by verizon 3 times already and it's weird because it works fine on a charger in the house but in the car or a portable charger won't work

Haven't tried my car charger.. but doubt it would work since I already tried two different usb chargers. Going to try to do a cleaning with some aerosol duster and alcohol now...
I read something about clearing the cache partition at bootup ... but it doesn't sound like I have a 'software' malfunction, does it?
Thanks for the response. So your gf's was a broken charger port?

No, VZW never really figured out what it was. They just assume it's the phone. But it's been the same issue with each one. It's the OTA update that's causing issues I have a feeling, if only big red knew what the heck they were doing it probably wouldn't even do that at all. You could clean the cache partition. Not sure if it would work, trial and error there I guess

Ok. manual cleaning didn't work. ...
do you think a wireless charger could work if the charging port is busted?

Let's see.... buy decent non OEM battery, $30 and up.
Fix charger port AT LEAST $70 - $150.
Wireless charging kit plus the convenience of wireless charging For $10-$15. I'm definitely gonna do it. Lol.
I've read a gazillion threads on this problem and none have suggested what I mentioned. Hope people will find this thread handy.
Man I love technology. Maybe I SHOULD make effort to understand it better.
Thanks all for your input.

Note 5 problem with usb port and samsung vr

So last night i was using my portable battery to charge my phone when it suddenly tried to install samsung vr
Since then it keeps connecting to a charger or dock, regardless of whether i have anything plugged into the usb port.
Restarting, wiping cache, force closing has not helped, samsung vr can't be disabled in safe mode.
What is the malfunction with this phone?

Get a can of compressed air and blow into the charging port. This worked for me on my N5 and a similar issue on my N3.
Good luck!

Wth, i have the exact same problem. Mine goes haywire. I used my daughters charger one night and my wife woke me to the annoying sound of it charging, while it was plugged in. Took it of and it hasn't been right since, going on 2 weeks now. What's really messed up is that im rooted and knox and yup that crap, but i took it to the sprint store and they ran all kinds of test but the phone showed perfect. And not once did it act stupid in the store!!! Took it home and bam, starts charging by itself again. So i decided to record the problem using my wife's edge+. Ill be damn that even though they can see its a problem, the test showes the phone in perfect condition so i can't get an exchange until something is "really" wrong. And I'm s.o.l on sending it it Samsung [emoji20] . On a better note though, after about 6 or 8 full charge and discharges, inaccurate battery reading....things have started to return to normal. Only happening 2 to 3 times a day now.
Sent from my SM-N920P using Tapatalk
Tried that, it didn't work.
Took it to sprint today and they did a factory reset. At first, while in the store it started doing it again, so they ordered me areplacement. I took the malfunctioning note 5 back and after an andriod software update the problem seems to have gone away.
The replacement is coming in 2 days, so I'm going to be watching this thing like a hawk till then, if the factory reset really worked, not only will i be amazed but also a little hesitant to exchange my phone. I guess some what sentimental, but also do not want a refurb...

I odin back to stock, took the ota, and still have the same prob.

Another thing i did was remove the magnetic kickstand from my phonecase.
It's been 24+hours and a factory reset, then the update to 5.1.1 and removing the kickstand have seemed to get rid of my malfunctions.
Keeping my fingers crossed.
Sent from my SM-N920P using Tapatalk
So after 1 week with no problems, i theorize that the combination of the magnetic kickstand case with the low voltage of a standard portable battery charger was the cause of the malfunction i experienced. There is another possibility which is also likely in that it may have been an update issue.
All other possibilities seem less likely.

S7 wont fast charge after 7.0 update

hi .. i updated via OTA update the new nougat version which i love in every aspect but ever since my phone using the same out of the box charger and cable, wont go into fast charge, i tried to clean cach partitions and turn it off , different cable and clicking the option on and off in the setting for the fast charging,
nothing seem to get it to work....
i really miss that feature.
The other way is to do factory reset but make sure you back things up first.
How did you get the ota? Im still using the beta

Galaxy S7 Fast Charge & MTP Not Working, Computers Cannot Recognize It!!

Hi dear xda users
I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 SM-G930F model and facing a very frustrating issue. The problem began a couple of months ago, when I woke up, the fast charging ability and any USB connection with computer was gone.
The steps that I've tried
1) I have tried it with multiple computers, multiple USB ports and ORIGINAL 2.0A fast wall chargers, can't recognize it,can't fast charge.
2) I have installed ADB drivers and all Samsung drivers, still not recognized, still can't fast charge.
3) I've tried to revert it to stock with stock firmware, stock bootloader and modem, even in Fastboot Download mode, still not recognized.
4) Last thing, I thought it might be the charging port (flex) is broken and I've had it changed with the same new charging flex in front of my eyes with a technician and still can't get it recognized or fast charged.
5) I have changed the settings and tried almost all combinations from the dialer menu *#8800#, still can't!
The device did not contact any water at all and I am beginning to think that motherboard is corrupt somehow.
Another bad news is Samsung Turkey Official Service Centers are denying to repair the devices that you bought from any other country (SHAME ON YOU SAMSUNG!)
They basically won't replace or repair anything with in my phone! (still, it is the same model that they sell in Turkey)
Have anyone faced the similar issues with me?
Only thing I know of is if you have USB debugging on, it prevents some USB functionality until turned off. But if you flashed stock, USB debugging should have reverted to stock.
And yes Samsung warranty doesn't cover grey imports, you have to buy locally.

I've tried almost all possibilities and no, you got me wrong, I am not asking for a warranty covered service, even I say that I am going to pay for it, they won't do it.

You mention charging port "Flex", I assumed by that wording you meant some cable from the port
Well only thing left is the battery and main motherboard really
happened to my old s7 edge and i did all you have done too but no luck. it is some software bug i read soemwhere which only samsung can fix via ota cause our phone cant get detected by pc to flash rom. so all eforts in vain , and i sold the phone in the end. also mine used to get charged in 5-6 hours cause it detecs every cable as usb cable.

Almost everyone in this forum has a rooted phone, yet this is an issue few have experienced. Rooting might be the first step they took to breaking something, but rooting alone couldn't be the cause otherwise you'd see way more of this.
Keep it on track guys!!!!!
How are we gonna fix this! I'm scared if my phone dies and I can't connect it to a pc..
