Nah...not likely. The updates, if they ever do finally come, will be associated with the firmware for the specific carrier.

Nothing is required to receive an update apart from having the Zune software on your pc and in the case of the useless carriers, their approval to MS to release the update. Unlocked devices should get updates with no restrictions or delays, barring technical issues.

That would be those technical issues then. Or just the result of a phased rollout, but you do not need to have a Zune pass or anything else, as the OP asked. And if you unlocked it yourself, are you referring to a SIM unlock but its still a branded device, if so the original carrier would still control when the update is released. Unbranding with a stock firmware would be the way to revert it complete "unlocked" state with no carrier ties but even then, its no guarantee of getting the update sooner.

Then obviously its just down to being a phased rollout, based on whatever criteria MS is using.
There's only 7 days until Nodo gets released (theoretically), at this rate I'll not get this update before Nodo!
I hope Nodo doesn't get as delayed as this update did. Still nothing for me - UK O2 HD7 SIM-unlocked.
i got an email from HTC as i am using an unbranded HD7 and still to get the pre update, they told me to just wait for the march update...
they will not come out and say that MS have halt the 21st feb update or it was pushed out to only part of the WP7 owners....
so now i have to wait for march 8th or so and see what happens...
Just remember that March 8th was just a rumour, more than likely it wont be available then.
Since T-Mobile dropped the Z3... will they ever release the lollipop update for us? If not can we force a update on the phones through manual updates or the sony PC companion?
From what I seen its still in manufacturer development for our device. I'm guessing sony is still testing it before releasing to us t-mobile users
I am hugely disappointed with TMobile's support of the Z3. When I got this phone in January I was told Lollipop would be available by the end of February. I do not believe it is Sony dragging their feet anymore as they have released Lollipop to the rest of the world. It is TMobile dragging their feet "testing and qualifying" the update.

You are 50% correct in some ways. LOL ... TMO has to test out wifi calling feature which is not included in the standard OEM ROMs that sony pushes out. Wifi-calling and some other carrier based features or bloatware require oem rom manipulation much greater than just simply installing an app. This is why it takes so long to get the updates from the carrier. I believe this update will be showing up soon. It usually takes TMO about 2 weeks to test and have it re-certified if approved by TMO. IF the rom fails to provide satisfactory results, then the process starts all over again causing a minimum 2 week delay in pushing out the update. I used to be part of the process when i worked for TMO as a product specialist.
On that end, i doubt tmo will ever unlock the bootloader to this device. The main reason being that specific camera and security algorithims get destroyed during the unlocking process and i dont think TMO wants to deal with that or even support it.
This post say we will get a software update on May 2015 hope it is lollipop update so we can finally achieve root.

Hey Guys,
I have a Samsung S6 ATT phone which i unlocked then took over to Cricket. I have not gotten any updates since then and the system update via Settings says i am up to date but i see updates on the ATT website.
I know they are different networks and Cricket is awful about the monthly updates. Is it possible to patch the phone with the monthly updates from ATT using ODIN or is ODIN only used for full ROM flashes? Some of the updates are only 20 MB each but they do have security stuff and i like to stay current.
Any thoughts or advice on how to proceed?

Odin only allows full firmware updates and no ota updates for little things. The only thing I can advise to try is to flash an AT&T firmware via odin and see if updates kick in, I'm not too familiar with the American variants as I have a global one where things are admittedly much simpler.

I also have an unlocked S6 on Cricket, and though I don't have an answer to your question really I did want to mention that I took the phone to a Best Buy with a Samsung Experience Shop and they upgraded it from 5.1.1 to 6 for me. I plan to do the same when Nougat gets released. As best I can tell they can't do monthly security patches for you, only major releases, but it still is better than nothing. Plus, in theory the FCC will eventually start forcing AT&T to update branded phones that are not active on its network, or at least so I read a while back when I was investigating this issue. Take that with a grain of salt.
Is this the one that started in mid-February with a security update?
The ATT software upgrade page shows a version that matches what my phone has now BEFORE the upgrade. So, I'm not sure.
I can't avoid it anyway since it eventually updates.
This update bricked my phone.

Sux really might sell. Didn't realize haw spoiled I was with my cold tmob g2 and g3. Really hope they follow thru with freedoms from authorization per carrier. I bought it I can do what I want with it.
I bought factory unlocked S9+ (SM-G965U1) phone a year ago. I always thought that software updates for unlocked phones are independent of carrier, and this was one of the advantages of owning one.
However, after Pie update I was stuck with January security update. I recently started to wonder why, and I stumbled across multiple threads on Samsung and T-Mobile support forums about this problem. BTW, I'm using T-Mobile.
Apparently, Samsung pushes updates to unlocked phones based on the carrier you're currently using! For some weird reason, they haven't pushed updates for those who use T-Mobile sim card:
https://doc.samsungmobile.com/SM-G965U1/TMB/doc.html
T-Mobile itself pushed updates for T-Mobile-branded S9+ phones: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-37179
Here are Samsung updates for unlocked phones that use Sprint sim cards: https://doc.samsungmobile.com/SM-G965U1/SPR/doc.html
This is unbelievable. I don't understand, why in the first place Samsung differentiates unlocked phones by carrier sim cards. Software builds that are pushed are still the same in the end regardless of sim card, just check Samsung update webpage for different carriers (e.g. https://doc.samsungmobile.com/SM-G965U1/XAA/doc.html )
Anyway, I went to Bestbuy and bought a $1 sim card kit. I put ATT compatible sim card into my phone, and without any activation I got all of the security updates until September.
What the hell is going on? Are T-Mobile users stuck on putting different sim cards in their phones to get latest software updates?
Man, that must really suck.
This is the first time I'm reading that the updates depend on the SIM card. I have a T-Mobile phone variant using a Mexico SIM. So now my curious side has me if I should attempt to update using the T-Mobile software and seeing if I find an update with my Mexico SIM. Probably still won't update.
But, I have no way of TWRP backing up so, I won't even attempt.
I already changed firmware anyway, I have flashed stock carrier-free firmware on the phone and I'm on the latest security patch (September)
YES, this maddens me greatly! If I didn't know how to use Odin I would be stuck months and months back! All kinds of little carriers push the updates, but not T-Mobile! Thanks for the $1 SIM card idea, that sounds easier than downloading firmware and flashing with Odin.

I think that this is Samsung's fault. This is factory unlocked phone, so it receives updates directly from Samsung. For some reason, Samsung still differentiates between carriers by making CSC carrier-specific (even though pushed builds are the same for all carriers in the US!), instead of just being XAA, which it should be.
Actually, there is a post regarding this issue on XDA: https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-treating-us-unlocked-device-owners-second-rate-citizens/
This is horrible on Samsung's end. It's sad, since this is the best phone I've owned so far in terms of hardware. But it'll definitely affect my decision, when it's time to upgrade.

Same issue I am currently facing. I flashed latest stock rom G965FXXUAETG3 and now my phone is on 'emergency calls only'. I am in Pakistan and I think carrier is locked now. However, in Service provider SW very PAK/ PAK,PAK, TEL is written.
Any resolution? Help needed.
I'm using my S9+ on Cricket Wireless here in the States. I had been receiving regular updates through the May 2020 update. It's now July 25, and I haven't received the June 2020 update. I check several times each day, but I keep being told that my "software is up-to-date." Will I ever receive the June 2020 update? Or will they jump me directly to the July 2020 update? If the latter, when might that happen? Or am I stuck at May 2020 with this former Flagship device? Thanks!!!

LIke myself and others. You will probably be stuck on the May 2020 update.
Factory unbranded phones should push updates ok OTA (without sim inserted and network settings reset before checking for updates over WiFi connection)- Is this not the case with your device?
Is there a download for the OneUI2.5/Android11 update available for the SM-G965U1? I have been checking Sammobile but it seems like the U1 is one of the last to still not have the update. I am on the T-Mobile network.
