Nah...not likely. The updates, if they ever do finally come, will be associated with the firmware for the specific carrier.

Nothing is required to receive an update apart from having the Zune software on your pc and in the case of the useless carriers, their approval to MS to release the update. Unlocked devices should get updates with no restrictions or delays, barring technical issues.

That would be those technical issues then. Or just the result of a phased rollout, but you do not need to have a Zune pass or anything else, as the OP asked. And if you unlocked it yourself, are you referring to a SIM unlock but its still a branded device, if so the original carrier would still control when the update is released. Unbranding with a stock firmware would be the way to revert it complete "unlocked" state with no carrier ties but even then, its no guarantee of getting the update sooner.

Then obviously its just down to being a phased rollout, based on whatever criteria MS is using.
There's only 7 days until Nodo gets released (theoretically), at this rate I'll not get this update before Nodo!
I hope Nodo doesn't get as delayed as this update did. Still nothing for me - UK O2 HD7 SIM-unlocked.
i got an email from HTC as i am using an unbranded HD7 and still to get the pre update, they told me to just wait for the march update...
they will not come out and say that MS have halt the 21st feb update or it was pushed out to only part of the WP7 owners....
so now i have to wait for march 8th or so and see what happens...
Just remember that March 8th was just a rumour, more than likely it wont be available then.

I bought an Australian (Telstar) HTC Mozart to use in New Zealand as the hardware specs match the NZ Telecom network. Now I an really worried that as Telecom dont sell this phone they will never "release" an update and I'll eventually be stuck with a very old version of WP7.
Anyone got an ideas if this will be a problem or if my phone will see the Telstra update and grab that?
I have a dev account so if anyone knows how a dev can load the update directly then that would be great to hear...
Thanks
they will Telstra aren't really ones to stop it though i know that they haven't released the update yet. my sister has a mozart from telstra and hasn't gotten an update yet. just be patient. i'm pretty sure they just rolled it all into one.
I also bought a phone from germany and I'm using it in Portugal with diferent carrier and I got the update! So I think you shouldn't worry

But do you think it will update a phone running in NZ on a different network? Mt worry is that if teh carrier can block an update then that seems to suggest its tied to the phone + carrier combination. If i take a phone sold for an Australian carrier and use it in NZ then will it update?
In theory it should work as Telecom NZ provide the internet access and the phone is still branded Telstra. It still shows their NextG branding at start up etc but what if it doesn't?
I also cant think why developers are not allowed to run the update using dev only tools. How are we supposed to test our applications?
Seems a little up in the air. As for teh update I am patient and happy to wait but I really think MS need to explain stuff way more. Lots of people are complaining and that is bad for the image as a whole. A few more blog post from MS could really diffuse that.
Thanks for the feedback.

Yes. It's tied to the device+branding, so as long as Telstra releases the update you will get it.
The alternative is to unbrand your phone by flashing a non-branded (i.e. generic) ROM and you'll get the update as soon as MS seems fit rather than being dependant on any carriers.
Hi everyone,
This morning I received notice on my Rogers Samsung Focus that I'm ready to receive the 7392 update which fixes the certificate bug. My phone is currently unlocked with Nodo and I obviously want to keep it that way.
Has anyone with an unlocked phone already completed the 7392 update, and if so is your device still unlocked after. I'm concerned that Microsoft may have snuck in something that would disable the unlock many of us have applied to our phones.
I have 7392 on HTC 7 PRO,phone is still unlocked.

I didn't get it until I synced my phone with my PC through Zune.
And yes my phone is still unlocked.
Well I guess it'll be a while before alot of people see this update, after all =/ But it's good to hear that the update doesn't mess with our unlock mojo =D
Hi, I currently have a Orange UK htc 8X running the stock rom but I was able to install the first official OTA update from MS. Now I thought this first update would only be for the international unbranded phones. So my question is this. Does this mean that i am not on a locked Orange UK phone but that i actually have a unbranded international handset. Not that it makes that much difference at the moment, but for future custom roms it might. Many thanks in advance for any info.
I'm on Vodafone UK and got the update this morning. I think this update was pushed out by MS/HTC themselves so all handsets got it as there were general fixes and extras that are not reliant on any carrier specific restrictions.
On windows phone 8 MS is bypassing the carriers for updates. That said I have a Vodafone 8X and it came unbranded and sim unlocked.
Does anyone have any views on battery life since the update? When I tested the 8X I found it had a terrible idle drain issue leading to poor battery life and I am wondering if this is fixed?

No, it is not. MS can't do that for many reasons. There is a so-called enthousiast program mentioned last summer that will allow users/enthousiasts to register their phones to receive early updates directly from MS. But that program hasn't kicked off yet and no one at MS is talking about it at this time. So branded WP8 phones still have to wait.
I have o2 UK branded 8X no update yet
No update yet with Bell, probably going to be updated at the same time as AT&T.
anyone know what the update actually does?
More stable than before (didn't really had the reboot problem personally) and persistent Wifi (looking forward to this!). That's pretty much what I know of.

Really hoping they fix the bluetooth issues with the phone going into privacy mode, or not being able to pair at all..
Tmobile USA 8X.
No updates yet.
Hi all,
I bought the unlocked A9 (32GB / 3GB) from the Canadian HTC portal over the holidays. Everything works great and I love the device, but I'm concerned about the lack of updates.
I'm still on 6.0, with 6.0.1 not in sight. The bigger concern though is that my last security patch was 2015-11-01.
I never received a patch for December, and the January patch was just announced as being released today.
I've tried contacting HTC directly (on Twitter and on their online help chat) but I just can't get any info from them. Has anyone else (specifically people in Canada that bought the unlocked A9) had any issues in regards to device updates?
Thanks!
Have the same problem with at&t USA, 6.0 and no info from HTC. However, the device you have must be locked to a specific carrier, so the update it carrier based, you will have to contact the carrier company on the status of the update

Nope. Bought directly from HTC with no carrier involvement. My carrier doesn't even sell the device.

Hmm... that's a problem, as the unlocked variant should be on 6.0.1, IDK about that
I bought factory unlocked S9+ (SM-G965U1) phone a year ago. I always thought that software updates for unlocked phones are independent of carrier, and this was one of the advantages of owning one.
However, after Pie update I was stuck with January security update. I recently started to wonder why, and I stumbled across multiple threads on Samsung and T-Mobile support forums about this problem. BTW, I'm using T-Mobile.
Apparently, Samsung pushes updates to unlocked phones based on the carrier you're currently using! For some weird reason, they haven't pushed updates for those who use T-Mobile sim card:
https://doc.samsungmobile.com/SM-G965U1/TMB/doc.html
T-Mobile itself pushed updates for T-Mobile-branded S9+ phones: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-37179
Here are Samsung updates for unlocked phones that use Sprint sim cards: https://doc.samsungmobile.com/SM-G965U1/SPR/doc.html
This is unbelievable. I don't understand, why in the first place Samsung differentiates unlocked phones by carrier sim cards. Software builds that are pushed are still the same in the end regardless of sim card, just check Samsung update webpage for different carriers (e.g. https://doc.samsungmobile.com/SM-G965U1/XAA/doc.html )
Anyway, I went to Bestbuy and bought a $1 sim card kit. I put ATT compatible sim card into my phone, and without any activation I got all of the security updates until September.
What the hell is going on? Are T-Mobile users stuck on putting different sim cards in their phones to get latest software updates?
Man, that must really suck.
This is the first time I'm reading that the updates depend on the SIM card. I have a T-Mobile phone variant using a Mexico SIM. So now my curious side has me if I should attempt to update using the T-Mobile software and seeing if I find an update with my Mexico SIM. Probably still won't update.
But, I have no way of TWRP backing up so, I won't even attempt.
I already changed firmware anyway, I have flashed stock carrier-free firmware on the phone and I'm on the latest security patch (September)
YES, this maddens me greatly! If I didn't know how to use Odin I would be stuck months and months back! All kinds of little carriers push the updates, but not T-Mobile! Thanks for the $1 SIM card idea, that sounds easier than downloading firmware and flashing with Odin.

I think that this is Samsung's fault. This is factory unlocked phone, so it receives updates directly from Samsung. For some reason, Samsung still differentiates between carriers by making CSC carrier-specific (even though pushed builds are the same for all carriers in the US!), instead of just being XAA, which it should be.
Actually, there is a post regarding this issue on XDA: https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-treating-us-unlocked-device-owners-second-rate-citizens/
This is horrible on Samsung's end. It's sad, since this is the best phone I've owned so far in terms of hardware. But it'll definitely affect my decision, when it's time to upgrade.

Same issue I am currently facing. I flashed latest stock rom G965FXXUAETG3 and now my phone is on 'emergency calls only'. I am in Pakistan and I think carrier is locked now. However, in Service provider SW very PAK/ PAK,PAK, TEL is written.
Any resolution? Help needed.
I'm using my S9+ on Cricket Wireless here in the States. I had been receiving regular updates through the May 2020 update. It's now July 25, and I haven't received the June 2020 update. I check several times each day, but I keep being told that my "software is up-to-date." Will I ever receive the June 2020 update? Or will they jump me directly to the July 2020 update? If the latter, when might that happen? Or am I stuck at May 2020 with this former Flagship device? Thanks!!!

LIke myself and others. You will probably be stuck on the May 2020 update.
Factory unbranded phones should push updates ok OTA (without sim inserted and network settings reset before checking for updates over WiFi connection)- Is this not the case with your device?
Is there a download for the OneUI2.5/Android11 update available for the SM-G965U1? I have been checking Sammobile but it seems like the U1 is one of the last to still not have the update. I am on the T-Mobile network.
