Stock Oreo: Can't Add 802.1x EAP Wifi - Settings Force Close - Sony Xperia XZ Questions & Answers

Hi,
I seem to be getting a force close of the settings app while trying to add my work's wifi manually as it's hidden. It doesn't seem to matter that I'm entering a real network or not, the process outlined below seems to produce a force close. Does anyone else experience this? I've tried two firmware versions "1305-2808 Telecom NZ 41.3.A.0.401" and "1305-1859 Customized AU 41.3.A.2.58", both give me the same error.
What's happening:
Open Settings
Press "Network & Internet"
Press "Wi-Fi"
Press "Add Network"
Enter any Network Name & select Security "802.1x EAP"
Set CA certificate "Do not validate" and enter any Identity and any Password
Press "Save"
Receive force close message "Settings has stopped"
Does anyone have any possible advice?
Cheers!

Just bumping, can anyone re-create this issue or is it just me?

41.3.A.2.107 - i have tried and also FC on settings, so you are not alone

Thanks! But dang, I guess it shows Sony really doesn't have much sales to corporate then if a problem like this exists. Not exactly an uncommon setup. Hopefully when 8.1 comes out it'll be resolved.

Some secured Wi-Fi® connections require either server or mutual authentication. To be able to use these connections, you have to acquire and install two files on the device.
ca certificate
To enable the configuration of server authentication
The file should be in PEM format
The file extension must be .crt
client certificate
To enable the configuration of mutual authentication together with the ca certificate.
The file must be in PKCS #12 format and contain both the certificate and the private key for the client.
The file should be password protected with a known password
The file extension must be .pfx
Note! If the certificates are not available at the time of configuration, contact the administrator of the network you are trying to connect to, and request the certificates.
Android™ 8.0
To activate and install certificates files on the phone
Find and tap Settings > Lock screen & Security > Encryption & Credentials > Trusted credentials.
Drag the slider by a credential to the right to activate it.
If you want to install other credentials than the ones available:
Computer: Copy the two certificate files to the root folder of the internal storage, or the root folder of the memory card if no internal storage is available.
Phone: Find and tap Settings > Lock screen & Security > Encryption & Credentials > Install from device memory/SD card.
In the list of available certificates, tap the applicable files to install them
However, we are unable to provide the specific date for the release of software update specifically on your phone as it goes out batches by batches. Nonetheless, please wait for the notification to be sent directly through your phone to update.
At the same time, please make sure that your phone has enough free internal memory space for the update.
You can do so by moving media applications such as pictures, music, videos, WeChat and Whatsapp pictures to you SD Card using the File Commander Application or by clearing the Cache memory of all applications (Settings>Storage>Cached Data>OK)"
Btw, if you have any solution to fix the battery drain on the xperia xz , i would gladly accept it

Thanks for looking into this. I'll give this a go but I'm not sure if it'll work (or if our network team will give me the certs). My force close is experienced when attempting to manually add any 802.1x network with any settings at all and isn't specific to any particular network as per my steps. Something I missed in my original post is that our corporate network's SSID is hidden so i can't select it from the list of networks to add.
Fortunately, I've managed a work around for my situation in that I'm now using my company's guest wifi rather than the semi-trusted wifi zone.
Thanks again!
Unfortunately I don't have any fixes for the battery drain on the XZ, I'm reasonably content with the battery I'm getting out of mine in fact!

[Q] Remote Desktop's working, but...

What's a good VNC or VNC-like client for the TP2? I've tried a few and all fail. I'm running realVNC server on my home computer, I know the IP and port, have the password set, etc.
· I try to connect with this VNC client and it does nothing (after clicking connect, nothing is running, no screen comes up) - http://www.cs.utah.edu/~midgley/wince/vnc.html
· I try to connect with this other VNC client and it just hangs in the background as a hidden process. No visuals. -
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dotnetvnc/files/
· Additionally I tried a different app instead of VNC, Omnipresence. It's made for the diamond but I was hoping it'd work for me. I ran the server on my PC, installed the cab on my phone, ran the app, and attempted to connect.. I get this lengthy error: "Error while connecting: An error message is available for this exception but cannot be displayed"... blah blah blah blah blah.
Also, the omnipresence zip contains a dll but no instructions on what to do with it. I dunno if it goes on my phone or PC or what. I have .net compact framework version 3.5 (or later) installed on my phone. I have .net framework 4 on my PC.
What will it take to get an exact representation of my desktop showing on my phone screen? Preferably one that doesn't have to be resized to the lowest possible resolution? Ideally one that allows for panning around on the desktop by sliding across the screen (as omnipresence seems to do)?
==========================================================
You don't have to read anymore, but I thought I should share the various bits and pieces I had to figure out to get remote desktop (not VNC but almost as good) running on WM 6.5 (connecting to windows 7)...
1. On the PC, click start, type remote in the search box, and choose the option that says allow remote access to your pc. Of the three options in the middle, choose the one that says allow connections from any version of remote desktop. Note: To change this settings you need to enable windows firewall. You may have made a habit of disabling it (it used to be a nuisance in XP)... to re-enable, click start --> type services.msc in the search box and click on the result. Go to the w's for windows firewall. Double click it, change the startup type to manual and click apply (unless it already is) then click start. OK to close.
2. If you normally login to windows with a blank password, (maybe skip the login process entirely) click start, type gpedit.msc, click the result, navigate to computer config - windows settings - security settings - local policies - security options and find the entry near the top: Limit local use of blank passwords etc. ...double click that and change it to disabled.
3. Not sure if it's strictly necessary, and some may balk at the idea, but you might choose to shut down the firewall once that settings in step one is changed. Same steps, except you click stop instead of start.
4. On the phone, start the client and type in your IP in the first blank. Make sure it's your external IP, i.e. the one you get when you visit this site: http://whatismyip.com . For the user name blank, use your windows user name. If you need to double check it (i.e. you automatically login and forgot) click start on your PC. It'll be at the top right.
5. On the phone, go to settings --> all settings --> connections --> connections and then go to the advanced tab, then select networks --> change both dropdown boxes to your phone's internet connection (in my case, Sprint. Possibly "My ISP" could work?)
6. Here's the dumb part that had me bashing my head against the wall. The phone's connection to the internet needs to be 'goosed' before remote desktop can work. You need to open your web browser and browse to any site. Possibly some other internet-using app would work. Once you load any site, you can exit the browser and finally... FINALLY connect.
7. Fire up remote desktop, change the options to your liking, click connect.
Got it going with some help from ppcgeeks. Also got VNC working. If anyone is having trouble, I recommend reading this post:

Gmote - how to enable before windows logon screen

I absolutely love Gmote as It means I can control everything on my media PC on my phone without having to walk to the other side of the room to tend to my computer. The problem is I want to keep the windows password logon screen, but Gmote is not running at this time so I am unable to enter my windows password using my phone. My question is how do I get Gmote to run before the login screen so I can use it to input my password?
I have spent many hours trying to accomplish this, and have figured if I want Gmote to be available at the logon screen I will have to setup Gmote as a windows service. I seem to have done this successfully by following the below steps:
1.Run SrvInstw.exe
2.Check Install Service radio box, click Next
3.Check Local Machine radio box, click Next
4.Enter the name for your service, click Next
5.Click Browse and select srvany.exe (which is in the same folder as SrvInstw.exe, remember?), then click Next
6.Click Service is its own Process radio box, click Next
7.Select what user account you want this service to run under. If this service is to have its UI, check the Allow Service to Interact with Desktop checkbox. Normally the services run under System Account
8.Select the startup option, click Next
9.Click Finish. But you are not finished just yet
10.Open RegEdit. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
11.Locate the service you just created in the Services branch, click on it.
12.Create a new key called Parameters
13.Click on Parameters and create a new string value called Application
14.Double-click on Application and set it equal to the full path of your VB executable (e.g. c:\...\MyApp.exe)
I then had a problem when Gmote was starting that it would complain about VlC libraries. After more research I found the following rectified this
A. Right-click "Computer" and choose "Properties".
B. on the left, choose Advanced system settings.
C. Click the Advanced tab, then "Environment Variables"
D. On the bottom "System Variables" group, scroll down to the "Path" variable and double-click
E. What is here varies by what you have installed on your computer. You need to edit the value.
F. Move all the way to the end and add this (no space after current contents):
;C:\Program Files\Java\jre6;C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC;C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins
My only problem now is that Gmote seems to be starting before my wirless network is configured and comes up with an error message:
“unable to join the multicast socket. Is the computer connected to a network? Exiting Gmote.”
Once the wireless network is configured if you close this warning box everything works as it should. Even with the warning box open the file browser works but not the touchpad. The problem is I can’t close this box without a mouse or keyboard, so defeats the object of having my media centre pc solely controlled from my phone.
I looked into adding dependencies to my Gmote registry service key, as I thought this may rectify the problem. The dependencies I have added are RpcSs, Ndisuio, WZCSVC, Ip6Fw, Dhcp, Tcpip, Afd, NetBT (this are the logical ones I could think of)
Despite this Gmote still starts before my wireless network adapter is configured, so I always get the error message. Is there anyway to make sure Gmote only starts once my wireless network is configured?
Not a whole lot to add other than I'm looking for a solution to this problem as well. Thanks for making so much good progress on it!
Where does one find SrvInstw.exe on Windows 7?
Have Googled around and it seems I need a Resource Kit or PowerTools or something.
Any insight appreciated!

If you're on xp, try a dependency on the wireless zero configuration service.
If you're on 7, try setting that service to automatic (delayed) startup.

You don't have to have srvinstw, it's just a gui for creating the service. What you DO need is srvany, which is supposed to work if you use the files from the server 2003 resource kit.
To create the service without srvinstw, use sc from (admin) command line:
Code:
Sc create mysvcname binpath= c:\path\to\srvany.exe start= auto type= interact type= own
If type= own doesn't work, try type= shared. Then follow op's registry edits.
If you need to delete the service to try again, use
Code:
Sc delete mysvcname
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
use task scheduler
I have got gmote working as I want by using the task scheduler in xp. I removed gmote from the startup folder where it was originally and then added it as a scheduled task with the following options:
run only if logged on
scheduled task = once
start time I set for 2 mins from now
advanced: repeat task every 1 minutes
then I also setup xp to logon automatically (do a search for control userpasswords2 if you don't know how).
at the specified time in 2 mins gmote server starts up and once running the task scheduler seems to know not to try and relaunch it. If I restart my computer then it logs on to xp automatically and then in a minute or less gmote relaunches, simples! I do note however that if I suspend my computer then when I turn it back on it comes up with the xp login screen even though I have no password set and although the gmote server is still running it won't let me have control till after the log on screen so I have to drag my fat ass across the room and press enter on my keyboard. Alternatively I can just shut down the computer rather than suspending?

[ROOT][GUIDE] Permanently Disable WiFi

When you buy a new phone for your child. You want it must be a cool phone, but you also don't want your child uses WiFi function.
I have seen many people wondering here and there to Disable the WiFi permanently in their device. So i thought to make a thread regarding this.
I have seen many posts asking to remove or rename the WiFi Modules to Disable the WiFi but when i tried that unfortunately it failed to delete the Module.
So i moved on for another step and found easy steps to Disable WiFi permanently
Tested & worked in HTC M8 (4.4.2) & Nexus 5 (5.1)
This is a simple trick played in Build.prop which can disable the WiFi of your device for ever.
All you need is :
Rooted Device
ES File Explorer
RB Text Editor
First of all i recommend you to make a system backup with TWRP
here we go :
1. Open ES File Explorer and get Root access
2. Go to system folder and open Build.prop using RB Text Editor (i recommend you to backup original file)
3. Remove the below mentioned lines in Build.prop
Code:
[COLOR="red"]wifi.interface=
wifi.supplicant_scan_interval=[/COLOR]
4. save it and reboot!!
You can notice that WiFi buttons are no longer in use
Warning!
Im not responsible for any damage caused. Always Make Backup

From my experience you have three options: 1. go into settings and disable your data that way, 2. download an app that allows for easy data on/off switching or 3. which I'm going to do myself when I buy a new (used ebay) phone in the next couple weeks for someone: contact my prepaid carrier and ask them to "disable the data". They can do this at the carrier-level. This will prevent a child for example from re-enabling the data just by clicking a button on their phone. I just verified with my carrier today that they can in fact do this. Good luck!
Hello .. sir ... I had seen that file in that text editor .. i dont found that coding... Nw what i can do.. pls tell me...
[email protected]
This did not work for my phone, as those program lines are not present in my build.prop folder, but I found a solution for my Samsung Galaxy S5 Neo (6.0.1) that I know many others are looking for, it will probably work for all the galaxy models or at least some of them. Here it is:
1. Root your phone using "oneclickroot.com", they will do everything for you, including installing TWRP and SuperSU. Be sure to pay attention to how to access TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project)... for me it was by holding down the volume up, home, and power keys simultaneously and then releasing the power key on seeing red letters. It might vary phone to phone.
2. Make a system backup with TWRP after rooting by accessing TWRP and simply clicking "backup" and then swipe. In the event that you need to restore just access TWRP and click and swipe "restore".
3. Use a file managing app like "Root Browser" by JRummy from google play to go into these file folders: "system/etc/wifi"
4. In the Wifi folder delete the first four files:
bcmdhd_apsta.bin
bcmdhd_ibss.bin
bcmd_mfg.bin
bcmd_sta.bin
4. Now reboot your phone by simply turning it off and back on again.
5. All done, your phone's wifi will no longer work.
6. If for whatever reason you don't want to be able to get it back ever again, just go delete your system backup in TWRP and you won't be able to get it back.
If you don't see these files in your phone after rooting, don't be discouraged. I figured it out with a little experimentation and I knew absolutely nothing about programming or androids... I still don't. Just make a system backup with TWRP and experiment by deleting different files that have "Wifi" in their name. Only delete one at a time or a small group of files at a time, and restart the phone every time as programming changes will not take effect until you do. Every time you brick (disable) the phone, just use TWRP to restore your OS (Operating System) using your TWRP backup. It only takes about 2 minutes to restore every time. I bricked my phone about 4 times in the process of figuring this out. Very simple and easy.
Also, your carrier will usually be willing to apply a "data block" to your account if you call them. For $2/month Koodo will apply a data block that makes it impossible to access data.

If I did this to disable wi-fi on my child's phone, could they simply undo it by doing a factory reset of the phone?
Disable Wifi on Moto G6 / Pie
I recently had to do the same thing with my child's phone. She was just too good at circumventing the usual child protections and getting on the internet to surf adult material and chat with random stalkers halfway around the planet.
She has a Moto G6 with Android 9.0 PIE.
1. Rooted it
2. Loaded a file manager and after much trial and error found that wifi could be disabled with name changes on:
/vendor/lib/modules/wlan.ko -> wlan.bak
/vendor/lib/modules/pronto_wlan.ko -> pronto_wlan.back
Then, reboot the phone.
The user can attempt to start wifi, but it fails. No boot issues.

Yes, they could. That's why I also used Google Family Link to set up a minor child account for her and made it the main account for the phone after I changed the file names above, but before rebooting. GLF prevents a factor reset from within the phone or changing the user. She could try to boot into recovery and perform a factory flash, but then it's going to want the same google account as before....and she doesn't have the password. Fastboot is locked as well. The only issue you might have is that google somehow thinks all 14 yr-olds should be independent enough to remove supervision, but I guess you could do the same thing that the kids do to get around age limits - change the birth date.
I also shut off data at the wireless provider.
Now, she's got a smart phone that calls and texts, but can't get on the internet or play store. Also, without the internet, no updates that will wipe out these changes.

How can I do this?
How to find Driver Files to disable the Wifi
There were a couple of bumps on this thread regarding driver files for wifi and how people weren't able to find these files on their phone.
The answer is that if you don't see the driver files mentioned in the thread above, it's because they're called something else, if they exist at all.
For the Moto 6, I spent a fair amount time doing trial and error renaming of system files until something worked. It took me some time and research to determine that for PIE, the .ko files represented some sort of driver files. Then, I went searching for .ko files with wifi in them, and then finally, I located the two files mentioned in the thread above. For your phone, they may be in a completely different directory, or named something different.
I knew that I had figured it out when I booted the phone, and was unable to get the wifi to work or even detect any signal.
Maybe there's a parameter file on your phone that controls the wifi settings, or maybe you rename driver files like I did.
I've done this a couple of times now on my kid's phones, and for each phone, the driver files were different. The last phone I did, I went ahead and posted to this forum so maybe someone else can get some benefit.
Best of luck!

Well Well Well, I'm just 2 years late bumped on this thread .
It's Andoid 11 minimum in these times or even 12 & now 13 is also available.
But I managed to keep Wifi off while keeping Bluetooth Pairing & BT file transfers On, Hotspot On & Data On specially because Flight Mode no longer Disables WiFi, Bluetooth & Hotspot (only keeps Data off) since andoid 9 i think.
------------------ Worked on Andoid 11 GSI, Galaxy M-Series -----------------
I] If you just want WiFi disabled permanently, then Here are the steps that worked :
> Install Magisk or SuperSU And Optionally TWRP/Any Custom Recovery
> Install any Root Exploration app & grant it Root permissions
> Create a Backup (nandroid or anything that can backup your data)
> Using the Root Exploration app navigate to (vendor/etc/wifi)
> Look for the file ( wpa_supplicant_overlay.conf ), Tap and select Text Editor option
> Change to this -> [ p2p_disabled=0 ] , [ update_config=0 ], [ pmf=0 ] then tap Save.
> Reboot.
> Go to Settings >> Apps >> Bluetooth MIDI Service >> Reset the app
> Go to Settings >> Apps >> Bluetooth >> Reset the app
> Reset Network Settings (Settings >> System >> Reset Options >> Reset WiFi, Mobile & Bluetooth)
> Reset Firewall Settings(AFFirewall+, Netguard etc.)
> Reboot to Recovery

Now WiFi & Location should be permanently disabled but you can still connect BT wireless & send/receive BT files (mp3, jpeg etc. but not apk, exe etc.) also Hotspot, Data , Manual Location (Not GPS Location) works.
#BUGS: Windows does not Connect Automatically to phone Hotspot, manual reconnect needed everytime. GPS Location breaks but Manual Location entry can be picked-up by apps like Opera Browser etc.
II] There is also another same way to get WiFi, BT, Hotspot Disabled while keeping ONLY Data Enabled but that was not the original question on this post so no need I guess.

Google FRP Protection - A Journey Into The Matrix

As always each platform will evolve and have methods to protect users from theft of mobile devices. Google has Factory Reset Protection, and I'd like to share my experiences with this security feature on a Tabe E (SM-T560NU)
Background:
One of my local pawn shops always has deals on broken/locked devices and I know the owner and his son, so I frequently buy items. Some I'm able to fix, others can be bypassed.
About a month ago they had a Samsung Tab E, which I believe I paid $60 for. It was FRP Locked, and based on what I read online, I was sure I could unlock it.
Well, to my dismay I found out it had the latest patches and would not work with the old USB OTG hack.
However, I did find a hack that did give me some interesting results. One hack/triuck is to enable a wifi hotspot on your phone, and connect the FRP Locked device to that hotspot. Just when it is looking for software updates, kill the connection. It will complain it can't connect and will allow you to set the date and continue setup. However, the latest patches will simply restart Setup if you have not verified your Google Account.
However, I discovered that you can manually enable certian subsets of the device to work despite having FRP Lock enabled.
Once I used the WiFi hotspot trick, I created a pattern lock using the Setup Wizard. With this enabled, the Camera icon now shows up on the lock screen which you can use to access a few apps.
I went through the setup wizard one more time to enable my default WiFi connection so all future access wouldn't need the hotspot.
You can take photos then review them, and use the Share This menu action to access other apps. Most apps only allow you to access a specific instance, for example selecting Notes will only let you create a note, you cannot go back and see other notes you created. If you choose to share via Gmail, you can click the button "learn more" and this will allow you to access Google Chrome.
Note, I watched the latest video by rootjunky and tried to long tap the gmail and although it did show me app settings, it would not give me any access to change settings or go into the phone settings itself.
You can even use the file:/// protocal.
If you download an APK, it will download, but you can't open it. If you use file:///sdcard to see the internal SD and try opening an apk you downloaded, it treats it as another instance of download and asks if you want to replace your existing copy.
By browsing to the youtube site it opened the YouTube App, but as the device is FRP locked, any attempt to sign in won't work as the device will want the original account that was used.
OTG does function, as I'm typing this post using the tablet with a USB keyboard. If I plug in a USB flash drive the drive does flash it's LED so I can assume it works. I'm working on finding the mountpoints for OTG and external SD so I can try other actions.
I'm curious if I can access the built in media player, and will try loading the SD card with video files. But if chrome treats all files accessed by the file:/// protocal as downloads that may not work.
So security isn't always 100% as I now have a semi functional tablet which for my most basic needs, works perfectly. But I'm still working on learning more about the sandbox that must be implemented on these apps.
UPDATE: After playing around with the device, I found that if I used Media Share as a share to option, it would pop up and ask if I wanted to update it as it was outdated. This took me of course to the Samsung Apps, not Google Play. At this point I could install ES Explorer and get access to Settings and QuickShortcuts which allowed me to follow RootJunky's guide for disabling FRP. Note that will only work if you have an outdated version of Media Share.
I will post a full guide on this method in a day or so (It's 9:30PM work tomorrow) and we will see how long this bypass works. For those brave enough if you combine rootjunky's method with what I posted here, you should be good.
I so took the red pill.

S8+ [Secure Folder] Unusual data usage

Guys, Recently I've noticed that, under the "Secure Folder -> Settings -> More Settings -> Data Usage -> WI-FI Data Usage", there is a huge amount of data usage is indicating under my profile name ( See the attached picture ). I haven't enabled Backup/Restore or never used the browser on my Private Folder. So any idea what kind of data usage is that ?
Guys, I just checked. Every month I can see this data usage. Are they scanning or stealing from our Secure Folder ?
Secure folder is a sham!
I can't believe nobody is replying to or pulling attention towards this. I have also noticed network usage on my secure folder? Why does Samsung need to access this folder? What data is it sending or receiving? Is it not meant to be entirely secure and private?
Well, i just checked that data transfer values (both cell network and wifi) in secure folder match values outside of it.
So there is no data "leak" from inside of secure folder.
I read that the secure folder is backed up online to your Samsung account, that information is in the settings
Data you use outside of Secure Folder will show there as well since it relies on Android's multi user system.
It will show a User: 'Name' with the used data for your regular account (outside SF) for that month.
Apps that are within the container (SF) will always have the small lock to the bottom right.
Secure folder using my celular data
Hi! I just noticed that my security folder uses my celular data.... and a lot! I don't remember activating the security folder and there's nothing in it. But now I receive warnings saying that I'm about to exceed my 7G cellular data just with that folder!?!?!? What's the heck with that?
Thank you for your help.
Try uninstall.
You can uninstall...I don‘t think you can totally uninstall the built-in Secure Folder function. But, if you set it up and you don’t need it anymore, you can remove the folder using the following ways.
1. Open the Secure folder.
2. Tap the 3 vertical menu button > Settings > More settings > Uninstall.

Also make sure that you're on the latest update if you don't find the option
Secure folder data drain
I observe the same problem here. Once in a while, mostly in the night secure folder starts to communicate no matter if WiFi is available or it gobbles up my data traffic. Especially strange that my secure folder is completely empty. You have to question the integrity of Samsungs android mutation.
