I am rooted and have the latest adblock lists. All was well until a few days ago, that I saw a lot of Google ads served in-app, despite AdAway enabled.
Any idea what happened and how can I block ads universally again?

Hi, I've been using adFree adblock for the past 3 years and it used to block everything even admob's ads (the ones your getting from apps). Now it's barely do anything.
Any good ones with lists that actually work?
(also I've tried AdAway witch does exactly the same).

AdAway works great for me, i can't link it right now but you should be able to easily find it with google

Adaway doesnt seem to block admob. Just tried it.
Use MoaAB.

You could also install Xposed and configure UnbelovedHosts (goes better with Donator app).

I primarily rooted my phone to block ads. I am a long time user of AdFree, however, that app is no longer supported. I am curious what ad blocker does the community prefer. Google-ing options, it seems there is AdAway and AdBlock Plus. Are these good options, or are there others that are better? Also, with a systemless root, is it safe to manually change out the \system\etc\hosts file?

Adaway is the best :good:

Why do you need both? Don't they both do the same?
i use adgaurd from many days its creates VPN and lets us browse through it .. better dont use any kind of vpn when you are doing any money transactions
Adaway is good, but use Firefox (with ABP), uc, Yolo, Yu etc. Browsers as ADAWAY doesn't work good with browsers without inbuilt adblock features
adaway works via host file (you don't even have to keep the app open). It blocks every ad in every app installed on the phone
I'm a long time user of AdBlock Plus, but recently switched my browser to UBlock origin. ABP hasn't been updated for android in a while, so I was wondering if there was a better alternative, or a round up review I could read. Most of what's online is from 3-5 years ago, which seems odd that we need ad blocking now as a form of anti-malware software.
What is a good system wide ad blocker on Android? I have root on my device.
I'd like it to play well with OpenVPN and cell connections too. ABP seems to break on occasion when on cell connections.
i have adaway 3.2 and minminguard xposed module and i have never seen a single ad.if u wish there is a modded and updated youtube adfree version since youtube adaway module doesn't work for most of us.

I have been using DNS66 lately and have noticed that I have almost no ads any more either in my browser or in any apps I use. Like you, I used AdBlock for a long time but also noticed it becoming less and less useful as time goes. But I read a digest type review of ad blockers recently and DNS66 was at the top. Since I have started using it, I have noticed less ads (virtually none), also a noticeable increase in page load times, app load times and most significantly in the amount of data I use each month. Between using this DNS level ad blocker and removing facebook and replacing it with Metal Pro, I am now using half the data each month, getting noticeable increases across all web related traffic and I am much happier for it.
AdAway + Minminguard + Ad-free YouTube combo is the most powerful adblocker for rooted Android.
Dns66 is fast and lightweight adblocking solution for no-root Android devices, but since it is using VPN service, you can't use it with other VPN service like openVPN as Android only allows one VPN service running.
before some days i unrooted to receive just an OTA.When i opened tapatalk i couldn't believe my eyes.in every screen there was an add that was taking muuuch place on the screen.i had to scroll many times to find what i wanted.i read that minminguard removes both the add and the token place of screen that add was.adaway i think removes only the add.i couldn't imagine my device with adds.and i definitely even would root just to install only addaway programs..

Not in my case. No root Android + dns66 combo is enough for me, as I can find alternatives for ad-bloated app almost every time. Less than 5 apps with ad banner in my device, which blocked perfectly by dns66.
Hey, I just discovered that there is no more ad playback before the video. I have tried a lot of ad heavy videos and none of the ads appeared. Is this because I toggled off the whitelist in the adaway setting or there is some good update done by adaway team? I also have the ipv6 host blocking enabled in the setting but not sure if this is the reason behind it. Anyway just want to share this interesting discovery with anyone out there who might also super annoyed by the youtube ads. If it always working like this, let me know and I will delete my post. :victory:
just discovered the amazon ad still pops out sometimes.
Ads come back from time to time but i found clearing youtube appdata fixes it

watch it on a browser with enabled adblock... works 100% for me with Brave browser (it has integrated adblock)...

Loving my Nord, only had for a few days and not rooted yet, so using Nord VPN to try and block Chrome ads.
However, despite it working flawlessly on other devices, Nord just won't block ads on any site on my OPN.
I'm using the latest apk from Nords website, and got Cybersec enabled. Any ideas??
Nope but in case you want to try something else, I am using dns66 and that works perfectly. I usually root and use adaway. But I wanted to try a non root solution at least untill I decide to root.

Have you enabled "private dns" on the phone? It might override the adblocking features of Nord VPN. Usually a lot of adblocking blocks by mapping for instance ads.facebook.com to 127.0.0.1 via DNS. But if you enable private DNS on the phone it's not using Nord VPNs DNS but the private DNS supplier via https.

I guess on other phones I've not relied on the VPNs ad blocking abilities as I've always been rooted using Adaway.
Maybe it's just really bad at blocking ads - ie none at all?!
So, for what it's worth, finally have this fixed....
Whilst I hadn't set up a private / custom DNS, it seems that since I copied over settings from my previous phone (PH-1 R.I.P.) there WAS a redirect in place. I'd only checked DNS within the VPN, not on the phone.
So, VPN active and ads gone!
