Order of unlock and root, does it matter? - General Questions and Answers

I have an old, locked Rogers Communications (Canada) Samsung Galaxy Note 3, which I want to unlock and root. Unfortunately, I rooted before unlocking and damaged some system files so that the exchange server services stops all the time, and only the Home button works, the Menu and Back-up buttons don't work. Since there was no data on the phone, I reset it to factory settings, but this did not correct the exchange services or the buttons problem. Downloaded the correct stock ROM file and and tried to install it using Odin ROM installer but it failed with the following message:

I think I need a bit of help. So last night busybox updated to the latest version (from the app). Now today when I go to start up my phone it starts up, but stays on the Galaxy S3 logo. I can boot into CWM recovery and download mode just fine. So I was attempting to flash (via Odin) back to stock so I could start fresh. I was following the advice from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840030. And the bootchains flashed fine, but the root66.tar keeps failing.
This is the log I get:
Code:
<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..

<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> root66_VZW_I535VRBMA2.tar.md5 is valid.

What am I doing wrong?
Also I was running a older build of SynergyROM if that's of any use.

Do I need to check other boxes to overcome this write fail? Appreciate any suggestions.

Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist. Odin is failing because you can't flash the mdl firmware on your device. You need to flash nb1, which is not available on sammobile. See this excellent guide by gutt13, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221. If you have further questions ask in that thread. They are the experts on your device.

I followed a tutorial because its looked the best i had seen for a while and it had most the files included it was off this forum in the developers section so i booted my s5300 into download mode started up odin 3 and begin placing the files in the correct paths. Once in the correct paths i pressed start and here is what i get a fail? can anyone explain why this might be happening i think the old owner who gave me the brick said he had partioned it so he could use a custom rom ive booted into recovery mode and i see is it cyanmobile amd clockworkmod but i think the clockwork dont have any files? and something else anyway here is the code of the odin result any help would be very helpful has ive been up all night trying to repair it to no avail i dont know how much more i can take hehe?

Do you have the Samsung drivers installed? Do you have adb activated in the developer settings?
