Ebay bought Mate 8 not updating..? - Huawei Mate 9 Questions & Answers

So I bought a (supposedly) sealed Mate 9 on ebay as a Christmas present to myself, and it's great! but i'm not getting any updates.. its an MHA-L29, Build no MHA-L29C432B182-log.
I'd previously been onto Huawei on facebook with an update query on my Mate 8, so I queried them about this phone with the same question. This was what I got back:
Hi Fred,
Thank you for getting back to us.
We have tried checking the IMEI numbers of your Mate 9 device in our system and although on the consumer website we were prompted with the information that the device is intended for China, while running them through our other software tools we were unable to gain access to any type of information.
For this reason we won't be able to provide any details related to the current Build Number available for the device, or any other details related to the updates intended for it.
Should any other questions arise, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Best regards, Huawei
So it seems it's a China model and not a European one. Do I somehow flash it with a Chinese rom? If so - which one?!
Any help much appreciated!
Fred

I wont be much help on this subject, but you would certainly rebrand to a different region. There are a few threads around for that, Then use the region you want.

So, it is definitely Chinese model.
1. Huawei didn't tell you much info, just point to China.
2. Model that is selling in Europe can't have log suffix in build number. This is ROM for test purpose with logging and sending info to Huawei. Chinese sellers flashed it by inadvertence.
Don't look on it was sealed. It is too easy to seal box again.
Well, you can stay at C432 region, but I recommend flash release version like B198 using Firmware Finder.
Otherwise you can return to Chinese region ( C00 )
In this case you must get unlock code and unlock bootloader. Turn "oem unlock" in developer settings and remember that option is on world ROMs only.
Then you will able to rebrand.

Thanks for the input so far guys,
Would there be any benefit in putting a Chinese rom on? Am I right in thinking that China versions are getting Oreo at the moment? I'd rather not go through using the tool and rebranding (did it before with my Mate 8) so I think i'll try to work out the firmware finder app!
Thanks

I believe the Chinese versions are somewhat limited and cannot access some Google apps and services.

Good morning all,
I used the Firmware Finder to update to MHA-L29C432B198 and all good! Now I guess I just wait for the Oreo update to hit this region version. It needed a reset of course, so I had a fun evening of rebuilding and signing into all my apps while at the same time completely rebuilding my media centre pc which had refused to boot.. yay. Good times.

Well, even if you updated, you're still "out of region". So chances are you won't get any update to Oreo.
Oreo builds for C432 are named MHA-L29 8.0.0.xxx (C432) in Firmware Finder, same with MHA-L09.
So you could try updating to Oreo through FF.

Thanks, I'll keep checking the finder app. I'd rather stay on the c432 chain as I'm in England if that makes a difference. Is Oreo still in beta for 432? So far they all say not approved for installation.

Nougat L09C636B361 OTA Rolling Out (Australia)

Hey guys,
If anyone's interested, my P9 just received the OTA for L09C636B361. This is on an unlocked/unbranded Australian handset. Obviously, I've immediately started the download...
Time to start mashing that "Check for Updates" button if you're in Australia I guess
Excited! Time to spam the update button

Might want to check tru HiCare , and go through the early adopters button ...
Still nothing, sure I'll get something eventually..
i have the l09c34b140 and i live in australia (got it from virgin mobile australia on plan). is there anyway for me to convert to yours?
I am on EVA-L09C34B140 as well, heres hoping that we will get some Nougat goodness soon. I got Android 7 running no my old S4 and cant wait till the P9 officially gets an update.
I'm on the same EVA-L09C34B140 and also nothing yet. I bought my P9 outright, but it came with an annoying Optus boot and shutdown screen that I was hoping be rid of with an update, although I'm not too sure that'll be the case.

L09C34 is the Optus version, I got mine outright as well. I dont understand why Huawei will make an Australian model for Optus, a different model for Vodaphone and a unbranded model. They should of just made one model for all of Australia and a tool for carriers to put in their own boot animations.
Chances are, we will not get an update till Optus push through an update for this model. The model the OP has (L09C636), probably has his update pushed through by Huawei directly.
Ah, figures - a familiar story. I had the same issue with my old SG Note 2 which would have been waiting ages for an AU update via Telstra, but rooting it with a Nordic ROM saved me 18 months of waiting. I guess I have to suffer the Optus boot screen post-update though.

dyu reckon we should debrand and just install the unbranded model (if possible) or do we just idle :/

If I could practice on someone else's Optus-tainted P9 first I'd then give it a go on mine
The process appears rather more convoluted than my previous Android ROM flashing experience. I think I might wait a bit longer.
i'm on exactly the same firmware( C636B190, which is updated from B168 through OTA) as the OP had before receiving B361..
However I had received nothing.
I bought mine outright at JB HiFi and got the OTA on Thursday night - posted to Whirlpool as well. I received notification when I checked the update entry in settings. Not an early adopter nor rooted or downloaded via the HiCare app.
As for the different firmwares blame that on the carrier not Huawei - Optus, Telstra et al are always slow - best check their websites or ask their Twitter/FB accounts for the timeframe.
Loving the updated EMUI 5.0.
Unbranded Australian C636 here and still on B190, check for updates button nearly getting worn out!!
Got the Nougat update last night. Notification details are very hard to read. Almost white on white text. Anyone else got this, or knows how to fix it?
See screenshot attached.

@Tecalote is working on the Nougat version of the NewWorld rom. Chances are, he will probably release this before Optus roll out the EMUI 5.0 update. If you really want EMUI 5.0, you can always flash L09C636B361 via the Huawei tools, then it will be a debranded AU version.

MHA-AL00 rebrand to L29, go with c636 or c432? thoughts, opinions?

I have a mate 9 MHA-AL00, so far I've been able to unlock BL and have installed TWRP I'm trying to rebrand it to L29 using this guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/how-to/guide-mate-9-flash-update-package-t3593108
My question is: I can't decide whether to go with C636 or C432... What are the pro's con's from each? anyone who has succeeded in the rebrand process what are your thoughts? which region to go with?
The main reason why i'm doing the rebrand is because of the notification issue, Nova launcher, Bluetooth issues with MHA-AL00.
Your opinions between the different versions will be appreciated.
Hi. I did exactly as you're intending and went with 636 about six months ago. It has worked flawlessly for me, I've updated twice using the firmware finder app, due to again and have had zero issues. The phone rom runs like a charm and has never let me down, not once. I do not recall any issues.
No experience of the other ROM but I went for 636 as that's the international version and I figured that would be better for me, despite living in the UK European ROM was an option but international is great.

I would imagine you can reinstall everything despite the rebrand. The backup will put everything back and any apps that are out of date will get updated via play. Maybe some others have more experience.

I've done rebranding from C636 to C432 but I found both has some bugs. Some with touchscreen or system sounds. I can't find any build stable for me. (Currently I'm on L29C432B225).
Regarding data you can make a HiSuite backup of all but make another backup of pictures because HiSuite does not backup pics and vids.
I don't know how to identify Official Stable builds vs. Official Beta builds, anyone knows?
Edit: Sorry, I was talking about Mate 9 PRO model LON-L29, but it should be the same
I got no 4G toggle switch on C432 even when my SIM was 4G compatible. I have to go back o C636.
Just today I went to C636 from the Aussie C34, finally got some updates. Build seems perfectly fine with a few new features over the C34 build. Haven't tried C432 yet but 636 seems like a keeper for me.

Which rebrand did you choose?
My region is C636 and it works well, but I am considering rebranding the C432 to potentially get in Beta programs that are not offered to the C636 region.
I've been on C636 since I purchased and rebranded my Mate 9 in March this year. B181 has been the best build for me to date. Stellar battery life, stable. I don't even bother using Nova as EMUI is just superb. I've not considered any other build, C636 is the one for me.

There is an easier and much safer way to update if you still have a SIM card of the country you purchased the phone from. It doesn't even have to be active anymore. Just insert it and reboot, then connect to wifi and all the updates will pop up.
Hope that helps

I don't think it matters. Bought a USA C567 for a friend and he is using it in Europe with European sim and he got the C567 Oreo before me. I still didn't get mine. Believe it or not but it matters! Maybe your friend activated the C567 phone with a European SIM card and that's why he receives updates.
I bought a C636 phone in Cambodia and am constantly traveling around South East Asia. I never receive updates of any kind but the moment I insert a Cambodian SIM card the updates pop up.

Well, if I had read it more carefully I would've said you need to downgrade to Nougat.
But it's done if you follow the instructions.
Sorry for the misinformation.
Edit: Though, with an oeminfo.bin from Oreo you should be able to rebrand straight to Oreo.
You could always ask mankindtw, he should know.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How much does FunkyHuawei cost?
A: You need to buy credits on the FunkyHuawei website. The price per credit varies depending on the number of credits you buy. Different operations cost different amounts of credits. However, the Root feature of the Mate 10 tool is free, and as mentioned above, Recognized Developers/Contributors of XDA can ask for a free credit.
Q: My phone is bootloader locked, and FRP locked. My bootloader unlock code dosen't work. It won't boot. eRecovery doesn't work. Can you help?
A: Yes. With the Mate 10 this is now a common situation. Contact FunkyHuawei for help in this situation. We'll need to access your computer remotely and the procedure is a little bit complicated, but the phone can be unbricked.
Q: I can't get my bootloader unlock code/don't want to unlock my bootloader, but I want to change my phone to something other than Chinese. Can you help?
A: Yes. Our new FunkyHuawei Rebrand Tool works on recent Huawei phones (Sorry EMUI 8.1 phones not yet supported. Coming soon), to rebrand them to another region even when the bootloader is locked.
Q: I'm not seeing the latest version listed on FunkyHuawei or elsewhere as an OTA. Why not?
A: Huawei has a very odd and unpredictable way of rolling out OTA updates. You can use FunkyHuawei to install the new version immediately, or can wait for the update to be rolled out. It might be a month or more after release until the update reaches your device from Huawei directly. We have no idea why.
Q: Why isn't FunkyHuawei free?
A: Because many of FunkyHuawei's features cost FunkyHuawei money to provide. Features that don't cost FunkyHuawei money to provide, like rooting the Mate 10 or our TWRP build for Mate 9/Oreo, for example, are generally made available for free. There are also bills to pay, kids to put through school, and so on.
Q: I noticed FunkyHuawei in an XDA Portal article!
A: FunkyHuawei loves XDA, and is cooperating with them as much as possible. Recognized Developers and Contributors on the XDA forums are welcome to claim a free credit from FunkyHuawei as well.
Q: I have a different question.
A: This is what this thread is for! Post away!

Yes. But it's possible the phone has an internal secondary IMEI which it simply doesn't show on the settings. We haven't had a way of figuring out exactly how it works IMEI-wise, but both sims do work. It's been this way for generations of Huawei phones.

Is there any other way of installing the firmware? I have it on my computer. My bootloader is locked. Thanks in advance.

Hi mates, I have a p20 and currently I am on EML-L09 8.1.0.135(C40), and I have seen in firmware finder that there is a version of Android Pie that my telephone supports EML-L09C40E6R1P11B239 (9.0.0.239) I want to install it but through the methods of firmware finder I haven´t been able to get it( dns, proxy ). Is there any other way of installing the firmware? I have it on my computer. My bootloader is locked. Thanks in advance.

Hi!
Afaik FirmwareFinder only supports Androidd 8.0 not 8.1. But I had the same problem and the final solution was pretty surprising. At first I called the Hotline to "accelerate" the update. That's a method that can be applied by Huawei 8 weeks after the rollout of a new version. They promised that I would receive the update within 2-4 week. Nothing happend. So I continued searching the web and stumbled about one tipp. "Change your Sim-Card."
Yeah, sure, that can't be the reason, I thought. But after 2 more weeks I ordered a Prepaid-Sim, replaced my normal one, rebooted and here they were! 3 Updates in a row straight to Pie. I shared my solution on a small german forum and it worked for 3 other guys as well.
It's possible that I'm totally, totally wrong but it's worth a try. Good luck!

Sorry, mate. Try to call the Hotline and ask for an acceleration. Maybe they have any further hints.
