[Guide][TWRP] Lets make Blackphone 2 great again - Android General

IM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BRICK YOUR PHONE.
Hello there. I own bp2 since last year. So in order to avoid lags and poor battery performance im gonna write this guide.
So thanks to this i achieved a new phone, without battery drain, a very good battery and cpu temp, and almost root access.
These modifications are made on 3.0.14 ROM, I dont know if this works if your blackphone runs another version.
You can install 3.0.14 here
1. First of all you need to flash TWRP. Download and instructions here
2. Once flashed do not reboot system, type
HTML:
fastboot reboot
and press vol+ to enter twrp.
3. Now it will asks you to allow modifications, NEVER do that, always press "Keep Read Only" because you will get bootloop if you mount system as rw.
More info about that here
4. Now flash magisk, then reboot and install magisk apk. Download from here
NOTE: I dont know why but you need a microsd card in order to flash files, because twrp cant mount /data
NOTE 2: At this point you dont have su BUT you can install magisk modules (yes, xposed too).
Now lets give BP2 Pixel's style.
5. Download this script to remove all Google stuff, yes, just do it. I recommend the EXTREME one.
6. Flash it trough recovery and wipe chache/dalvik. do not reboot yet.
7. Now lets flash Gapps again, updated and modular. Just go to this page and select your desired package. I recommend AROMA not only because you install what you need, but you can remove stock apps (calculator, fmradio, stock email, etc). http://opengapps.org/
8. Now, yes, you can boot system.
9. I also made this script to remove all SilentCircle stuff. Just flash it.
NOTE 3: I wrote this script before removing gapps and that things i explained, so let me know wichs apps still get installed and i will add to the script. Also let me know what apps you want to remove.

Nice work.
Does this stop the phone checking update servers?

Yeah It removes all blackphone apps, but you can modify the script

great work although I have encountered a problem in the pixel laucher that gives me error

script not ok
hello. when i flash your script my phone goes on bootloop
i flash it trought TWRP cause my phone cant see any microsd card
i thing the sd slot of my phone have problem
but my phone goes bootloop after flash BP2_Bloatware
can you sent me any sugestion? Thanks a lot

But how is the phone?
About to spring for a BP2 but ... just out of curiosity:
The reason to own this phone is for the sandboxing and some of the applications that monitor and block application permissions. If you're removing those just to have a fast android phone ... not sure why you bought this one. The camera isn't even any good.
I just want to run basically unmodified. 2 years and many updates have passed since @polartux talked about battery draining Apps and just curious how the latest OS is? Also if I want to install applications I have developed myself (or get a couple off of the google app store) can I assume that's possible? Preciously LITTLE information about those things online. And I have emailed sales multiple times never got a single response. Kind of scary lol.
So :
-can I do ADK dev on this thing?
-has the stock OS gotten better?
-Can I install pandora (or whatever)?
Cheers!

Hello, that's a big problem. You must flash files from SD card instead of internal, if you flash from internal storage youll get boot loop and I don't know how to solve that

I am having a problem, every time I try and install Magisk thro' TWRP I get "failed to verify whole file signature" and "signature verification failed", I can install BP2 9, 10, 11 and 14 zips without any problems. Bloatware zip also throws up the same messages. may need a step by step instruction. As before TWRP is installed and BP2 11 doe's not brick the phone, not sure what 14 will do, thought it would brick the phone. Many thanks

Hi, i dont use the bp2 anymore since past year but i remember that you have to flash the zips from external sdcard, never use twrp to flash files trough internal. Maybe thats the problem. Hope ive helped you.

Hi guys when I tried to flash the recovery it told me:

Just black screen.
So i'm trying to fight with it using adb shell...
If I have a root and run all scripts mentioned here, I will explain it here later...

BP2 boot to TWRP
Hi All,
I have read several thread and web pages on how to root, install twrp, rom etc and I can not get it to work.
I was able to update the BP2 to 3.0.14 from .9
All I want to do is change to a custom rom.
I did the following:
-enable USB debugging
-enable oem unlock
-installed platform tools on PC
-adb reboot bootloader
-fastboot devices - phone is there
-fastboot oem unlock-go
-reboot - phone appears to be unlocked
-fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
>Sending 'boot.img' (17392 KB) OKAY [ 0.545s]
>Booting OKAY [ 0.040s]
>Finished. Total time: 0.596s
-fastboot reboot
reboots to blank screen
Do over, and when fastboot reboot, I hold down Volume+
still get blank screen
Any ideas?

It's because the screen not supported by TWRP.
When you run TWRP you should see all your files in windows by USB cable, right? Hope you put SD card in it.
So you are the same boat like me.
ROOT still doesn't work for me btw, but i have a few commands:
0) run twrp (probably it disappeared for you and stock recovery back, so i'm running it like that in download mode:
fastboot.exe boot twrp-3.4.0-0-bp2.img
1) open shell: adb shell
in the shell:
for install magisk:
twrp install /external_sd/Magisk-v21.1.zip
you have to have this file on sd card okay? =)
To rill bloatware:
twrp install /external_sd/BP2_Bloatware.zip
To kill google stuff will be not so easy because it will ask you questions on the screen.
So i've repacked it to force version without questions (will attach my version here)
twrp install /external_sd/G-Killer_v3_forced.zip
Then you need to install open gapps
twrp install /external_sd/open_gapps-arm-6.0-pico-20201113.zip
If you want to decrypt DATA partition then:
cat /etc/fstab
look for numbers for your DATA partition
then do format:
make_ext4fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p33
your end will be different possibly.
Then disable dm verify:
twrp install /external_sd/Disable_Dm-Verity_ForceEncrypt_11.02.2020.zip
take it here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/universal-dm-verity-forceencrypt-t3817389
and final reboot:
reboot
Anyway ROOT just simply doesn't work. I was fighting with it a lot of hours
tried super su also without any luck.
Hope it helps you somehow.

In win10 I have "adb interface" with ID: VID_18D1&PID_4EE2
In win7 it is "Android composite adb interface"
in both OSes works well.
So try to change driver for example.

[HOWTO] Cube iWork 10 Flagship Dual boot (i15-T) - unlock, TWRP, root

WARNING: Performing the actions decribed here will void your warranty and possibly brick your device. This was not written for complete noobs and assumes some prior experience. I will not be held responsible if you ruin your device.
NOTE: This was all tested on a stock iWork 10 Flagship dual boot (aka iWork 10 Ultimate) purchased from the manufacturers website. Device model is "i15 T", Device serial number starts with "i15TD": if you have another variant such as i15TL i can not vouch for any of this working the same way.is tablet
UPDATE: @popcorn2404 modified the boot.img on his USB Type-C variant if this tablet (i15-TCL), confirmed everything working well and was nice enough to provide the modified boot image. See downloads at end of post.
OTA: Most likely this will break OTA. Dont know yet...
Prerequisites:
PC with working ADB/Fastboot
Device properly recognized.
I'm using ubuntu 15.10 so I just added an entry to /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules to get things going properly
(EDIT: Windows 64 bit usb drivers attached to post -thanks @Jade.J.Munkey)
TIP: I would highly recommend extracting your stock recovery, boot and system images for safekeeping. These can easily be flashed back in fastboot if something goes wrong. Some may say this is overkill as you will be able to backup and recover with TWRP, but one never knows...
Unlocking bootloader
WARNING: this will erase all data, settings, etc... AND system default language will be chinese when you reboot
Go to settings, about tablet and tap 5 times on the Build number to activate developer options
Go to Developer options and enable OEM unlocking & USB debugging
Plug in your device while booted into android, then open a terminal
just to make sure adb is good type
Code:
adb devices
my output looks like this
Code:
List of devices attached
0123456789ABCDEF device
reboot tablet into fastboot mode
Code:
adb reboot fastboot
The device will now reboot to the OS selection screen. Select android and then it will boot into fastboot mode
once again just to be sure all is good type
Code:
fastboot devices
once again, my output
Code:
0123456789ABCDEF fastboot
then to unlock the bootloader
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
you then should see something like:
Code:
...
(bootloader) Unlock protection is set
(bootloader) Unlocking anyway since this is not a User build
OKAY [ 15.330s]
finished. total time: 15.330s
This is what you should see now in the bootloader if all went well:
SECURE BOOT - DISABLED
LOCK STATE - unlocked
Your bootloader in now unlocked. When you reboot it will take some time for the first boot and the system language will have defaulted back to chinese. Not too difficult to sort if you're familar with Android settings. Otherwise just google "android change system language from chinese to english".
Tip: At this point you may want to already download/copy the supersu zip to internal storage of the tablet so you're all set up for flashing it later...
Modified boot.img
Because of built in security, if you make any changes to system the device will not boot, so you need a modified boot image.
If you have the exact same kernel version as I do you can download the provided modified boot image here. Otherwise you can look HERE for instructions on how to make your own modified boot image. Personally I used SuperR's Kitchen to unpack & repack the image and did the modifications manually with gedit.
Kernel version 3.14.37-x86_64-L1-R429 made on Wed Mar 2 18:22:46 CST 2016
-if you have that one you are good to go ahead and use the image provided here.
Boot device into fastboot connected to PC. From the directory where you have the modified boot image type:
Code:
fastboot flash boot i15TDboot.img
Obviously if you made your own boot image you'll need to replace "i15TDboot.img" with the name of yours...
That's it, now on to recovery and rooting...
Flashing custom TWRP (compiled by @vampirefo)
Assuming you are still connected to the device in fastboot and the custom recovery is in the same directory:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery i15t_recovery.img
Now use volume buttons to select recovery mode and tap power button.
You should now be in TWRP. First, please be smart and make a backup!
Because this device has an unusual mount point, the supersu script will fail to properly mount system (thus failing to flash) so:
From TWRP main screen select "mount" then select system, then return to main screen
Select "install" and then the supersu zip you should already have on the tablet.
Boot system. Now there is one thing left to do:
To prevent the system from overwriting TWRP with the stock recovery on the next reboot:
With a root enabled file manager mount system r/w and navigate to /system/etc
Rename install-recovery.sh to install-recovery.sh.bak
That's it. Enjoy!
If you're looking for more info on this device, check out Laura's great thread
Thanks
@vampirefo - for taking the time to compile TWRP for this device, you rule man!

Thanks very much for the good work, I am successfully rooted. The only deviation from the instructions that occurred for me was that /system/etc did not appear in the TWRP file manager, fortunately the .sh did not run upon rebooting after installing the SU zip. So I just I just renamed the .sh in NextApp File Explorer with Root Add-On installed once booted in to android; I have since tested booting in to recovery and then back to android and it is working fine.
Here is the driver I found to enable the Cube iwork10 Ultimate to be seen by Windows 10 64bit whilst in fastboot:

Glad it worked out for you. Based on your experience I changed the instructions in the OP. Actually that's the exact same I did after doing this the first time but I thought it would be easier to do before first boot in TWRP. Anyhow thanks for pointing this out.

Cause i have a cube iwork 10 Ultimate Dual Boot (i15-TL) and am having issues on Android side where i do not have an option to move apps to sd card in apps settings. Also in storage there is no tab showing all apps on sd card. Im guessing i would need to root my device right? Can someone please help me i just want to get this working properly... i would show screenshots but i don't know how to attach them.
Will the recovery work with i15-TL?

From what I understand from reading at http://techtablets.com/forum/forums/cube/iwork-10-ultimate/
-it *should* work as my understanding is that the TD and TL are virtually identical other than different flavors of windows installed. But I can NOT personally confirm this as I have not tested on the TL variant.
What I can say with a higher level of certainty is that the procedure for unlocking the bootloader should be exactly the same. Once the bootloader is unlocked it is easy to reflash the stock recovery via fastboot should the custom recovery not work properly. (Assuming one has previously extracted an image of the original recovery to begin with. Same for boot and system images.)
So if the custom recovery does not work, it is pretty easy to reflash the original, as well as the original boot or system images should something else get messed up.
Hope this helps. Feel free to ask anything else if anything is unclear...

Tools such as link2sd require a rooted device.

As clearly stated in the OP, I do not know for sure because I have not tried on that variant, but it *should* work. If you read a few posts back, you can see that another TL owner seems to have successfully rooted his device. Hot tip: *reading* is very important here before asking questions.

No, this will not affect the windows side of things. Dual boot is unaffected.

The instructions for unlocking and rooting in the OP are very simple and straightforward. If you are inexperienced in general with rooting android or with adb/fastboot, those answers can easily be found on XDA and elsewhere by searching.
As far as moving apps to SD, since nobody seems to have done it yet (or posted that they have) the only way right now would be to root your device and try out one of the specific apps for that like link2sd. I will try to check this out ASAP but can not promise how soon because I'm focusing my efforts right now on porting another ROM to this device...

Need help with TF700T with Katkiss 6.0 installed

I recently bought a second hand TF700T that has been rooted with Katkiss 6.0 but it has numerous problems that I need to know which is the best way to resolve. This is what I have:
Model: TF700T
Android Version: 6.0.1
Kernel Version: 3.1.10 katkernel-tf700
Build: Katkiss-024.6.0.1
ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.4.7
The problems I have are:-
1. It has no Play Store and I am able to download the apk file but 'can't read/open' so it won't install from download (yes I have allowed apps from unknown sources). I managed to pull the apk file using ADB but the Play Store simply opens and closes a white page.
2. If I go to settings there is a SuperSU – clicking on it I get 'Unfortunately, settings has stopped'. I don't think this should happen. I don't know how to check if Super SU Beta 2.52 is installed.
3. If I go to Accounts I have Personal (IMAP) and + Add Account where I only have Exchange and Personal (IMAP). So I can't seem to be able to select a Google Account.
Presently I have nothing on the tablet I need (i.e. no data I need to keep) so if I have to start again I am happy to do that but I'm just learning so saying 'flash the rom' or such is too vague for me at this stage. I'm also not sure what or how to get 'data as f2fs' if that is important.
If someone could assist with a clear step by step of how I might resolve these issues I'd be very grateful. Happy to provide any other info sought. Not sure if this was caused when the seller wiped his personal data before selling or what, he says Play Store was working, so don't know if he bungled the rooting or what.
I got your PM and first of all, congrats you did a good amount of reading and you are on the right track.
Your problems with Google account and Play Store are probably due to either the wrong gapps (Google apps) version or the previous owner did a wipe of /data and did not reflash properly. Yep, arm 6.0 is right, but it has to be the pico edition. Since you did buy the tablet used, it probably would be a good idea to start from scratch. At least you would then know that if something won't work, it's because of something you did.
And yes, I agree with the advice to flash the Kang TWRP recovery. I have no idea if CWM supports f2fs but I don't think so. Most people use TWRP as recovery - it's the right way to go.
So let's get you prepped:
Download the rom, gapps and SuperSU from the links in Tim's thread (first post) and put them on a microSD. http://forum.xda-developers.com/transformer-tf700/development/rom-t3282166
Then head here and download the flashable zip of the Kang TWRP recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59299365&postcount=2
Also copy that to the microSD
Boot into CWM recovery, go to Install and navigate to the Kang TWRP zip.
To tell the truth I can't even remember if CWM supports the microSD but I think it does. If it doesn't you have to use adb to push the zip to internal memory and then flash it from there.
Anyway, flash the Kang TWRP and then reboot. Let it boot up, then turn the tablet off and boot via buttons (Power and Vol Down to get into bootloader, VolUp on flashing RCK) into recovery which should be TWRP at this time.
Go to Wipe > Format data > type "Yes" and go have a beer (did I mention the battery needs to be full before you start?). This will take 60 minutes plus and may look as if nothing happens but it does, don't mess with it!
Once that is done follow this guide to convert internal data to f2fs: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tra.../guide-convert-data-to-f2fs-twrp-2-8-t3073471
Start at step 4 and ignore any instructions related to data2sd/rom2sd.
Alright, now you got a squeaky clean tablet itching for a rom.
In TWRP go to Install > navigate to the microSD and select the rom zip. If you like, you can line up the other two files to be flashed right after the rom zip:
Touch: Add another zip, and repeat this for both the gapps and the supersu zips.
Or you flash them one by one - doesn't matter. But all 3 have to be flashed without rebooting in between and the rom has to be first!
Make sure "verify zip signature" is not checked, then swipe the button.
Have another beer
Once it's done, reboot to system and set up your new rom.
You definitely want to install the SuperSU app from the Play Store. You gain root by flashing the SuperSU zip, but you need the app to manage root.
If anything is unclear: Ask!
Have fun!
I'm up to the part where I get to have a beer...haaa. Wasn't all plain sailing. Having TWRP as an img file wasn't recognised on the sd card so I was unable to flash twrp that way. I managed to push twrp using ADB. (The small issue I had here originally was when I renamed the img file from say twrp-2.8.x.x-xxx.img to twrp.img (for ease of typing in adb) it was really twrp.img.img as it appears with a zip icon on my XP. After realising this it was straightforward after putting twrp.img into the adb folder and connecting the device and accessing the command prompt:
C:\adb>adb devices (to check I'm connected)
response:
List of devices attached
(numbers&letters here) device
C:/adb>adb reboot bootloader
This reboots the device into the bootloader and you hear the device buzz
C:/adb>fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
response
sending 'recovery' (7038kb)
Okay
writing 'recovery'
Okay
finished total time etc
then
c:/adb>fastboot reboot
rebooting....
I then used the power vol down buttons and yahoo I'm in TWRP and currently at the wipe data phase.
Can't tell you how much I appreciate this help and I'll repost a report after I get further along. Hope this helps others also.
Unexpected Clean Android waiting for a ROM
Beers were great. I finished the bit of 'convert internal data to f2fs' and thought when I rebooted, well don't know what I expected but 'squeaky clean tablet itching for a rom' wasn't a still present KatKiss rom logo start but that's what happened. Then I went to 'Install > navigate to the microSD and select the rom zip' and nothing on the SD card seemed to be recognised other than a self created 'LOST.DIR' directory so I copied the files into this directory ( Heh, at least it can see this directory). So I'm now in the process of installing KatKiss, Gapp 6 pico and SU User Beta.
If I'm on the wrong track here please let me know. Cheers
Paul;
No, you're doing good. You formatted /data, so did not touch /system where the rom lives. That's why your old room still boots. /system gets formatted during installation of the new rom = squeaky clean.

I've completed all the instructions - changed data to f2fs and then starting with the Katkiss, then Gapp pico and SuperSU (adding one zip after the other) and rebooted. Rebooted and device installed 73 apps and took me to a welcome screen with a language dropdown and a swipe button. I can access and change the language but the swipe button won't work so I'm locked on this screen. I went back to TWRP and pressed 'reboot' but what happened was the reboot button(located bottom right), settings button above it and the two bottom buttons on the left disappeared... so from there it wouldn't reboot. I had to hold the power button down to reboot and back in the flash screen but still can't get past that.

Heck! I did not think we needed to check your bootloader if it had Katkiss on it, but now I think we do:
Boot into fastboot and read the tiny text top left. The part with 10.6.1...... is what we need
Bootloader problem now! More beer required....

OK, I went back to the wipe data bit and did it all again.... I noted that when installing the Katkiss, Gapps and SuperU zips I saw 2 lines:
checking for md5 file
skipping md5 check: No md5 file found
Have no idea if it matters or not....
OK the tiny writing at top on fastboot (why does this have to be so small....really).
Anyway it says:
Key Driver not found.. booting as
Android CardHU-User Bootloader <2.0 e> released by "ww_epad-10.6.1.14.10-2013601" A?3
It is hard to be exact with it that small so hope that helps, but the 10.6.1.14.10 is correct can't be as sure with the last numbers though.
Thinking about a solution

I've done a bit of reading and I'm currently downloading ww_10_6_1_18_SDupdate.zip
I think my next step will be to unzip this file and find the T4_SDupdate file and put it on the sdmicro in root and boot into recovery. I'm guessing it will be located and the update begin. After that I'm not sure of what to expect. Will I have to go and flash twrp, wipe date, change to f2fs and install Katkiss,Gapps and SuperSU again? Will it matter if other files (TWRP, Katkiss, Gapps,SuperSU) are also on the microsd while this happens. If you could let me know if I'm on the right track that would be great.

Don't do that!!
Whatever it is that is not firmware for the TF700!
You are on the latest bootloader, no reason to mess with it!!
---------- Post added at 09:29 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:28 AM ----------
Give me some time, I'll get back to you
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
That was TF701 firmware you were thinking to flash. It is totally incompatible with your tablet and the T4 SD Update method works only with stock recovery. But all that aside....
Ok, what you experience is quite weird and I have no idea what caused it. Maybe a bad download maybe something went wrong during the flash - I have no idea...
So what is your situation now? Can you reboot from TWRP? Does the recovery work normally?
Because if not, that is the first thing you need to fix.
You may want to reflash TWRP anyway - just to be sure it did not get corrupted. You know how to flash in fastboot - excellent! Then let's do it that way.
Download from the first link for Kang TWRP 2.8.7.4. https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24352994023705509
Look at the info under "Download information" on that page: You'll see the md5 checksum for that file. That is control value to make sure the file you downloaded is complete and not corrupted.
You'll need a small program like Hashtab on your PC to check the md5. Install it, then right click on a zip, go to Properties and there you'll see a new tab: FileHashes. Copy the string from the download page into the "Compare" box and it instantly tells you if the file you have on your PC matches the one on the server. TWRP has a feature that it will compare the md5 if you have it along with the zip in form of a small text file on your microSD. If it doesn't find a md5 it just skips the integrity check.
Your microSD - something else to check. That TWRP doesn't see the downloaded files unless they are in the LOST directory is totally crazy. How is that microSD formatted? You got another one you can use? One that actually works and does not add another question mark to this situation? If not, at least format the microSD to fat32 on your PC, load your files and then check if TWRP sees them. Also check the md5 AFTER copying the files to the card.....
Do that with all the files you downloaded.
So, first thing is to flash TWRP again. Then make sure it works, you can reboot from it etc.
Then just perform a quick wipe in TWRP. From Home select Wipe > swipe the button > done
Then reflash the rom zip, gapps and supersu on which you checked the md5.
Let me know how that goes.....
Thanks for that info. No I wasn't going to do anything stupid without you OKing it first.
I redownloaded Kang TWRP 2.8.7.4 and pushed it again successfully with adb no problem. I am still unable to reboot from bootloader using adb or pressing reboot... these problems weren't present prior to installing Katkiss, Gapps and SuperSU. Still frozen on front screen of rom. I put the twrp.img file onto the micro SD Card and tried to flash. It gives me an option to select staging which I didn't tick so it tells me no partitions selected for flashing. Didn't want to tick something and stuff it up. I think TWRP is OK as it did work fine before I installed the other 3 programs.
The micro SD is fine it's FAT32 formatted. The issue with the recovery program not seeing the zip files in the root dir was when I was using CWM - no longer a problem.

There's some fundamental flaw in your thinking: You cannot flash the .img file in TWRP.
twrp_tf700t_kang_2.8.7.4.img - this file you have to flash in fastboot (fastboot flash recovery twrp_tf700t_kang_2.8.7.4.img)
twrp_tf700t_kang_2.8.7.4-signed.zip - this is the same recovery packaged into a flashable zip. This you can flash in recovery

You mean rebooting from recovery??? That sentence does not make sense. And something else is going on. Flashing a rom, gapps, supersu cannot have anything to do with your recovery not working properly. The recovery lives on it's own partition and boots from there.
Maybe time to take a break and retrace your steps. I cannot put my finger on it but somewhere you are doing something wrong.
Edit: Ha! Interesting! Just remembered that something changed in TWRP and yes, this latest version lets you flash an .img file to staging (from where it will get installed to it's proper partition during the next boot). I have no idea how solid this new feature is, so I'd still recommend falshing TWRP in fastboot.
But 2.8.7.4 works fine flashing Katkiss and associated files. Tried it myself this afternoon. All the components work. So the problem is most likely in the "how", not the "what".....
Sorry for the confusion. Really can't see what I may be doing wrong here. I followed exactly the same procedure as I did when I installed TWRP over CWM initially. I re-downloaded twrp_tf700t_kang_2.8.7.4.img , placed it in the adb folder and renamed it twrp.img. I then followed the same procedure I did originally:
C:\adb>adb devices (to check I'm connected)
response:
List of devices attached
(numbers&letters here) device
C:/adb>adb reboot bootloader
This reboots the device into the bootloader and you hear the device buzz
C:/adb>fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
response
sending 'recovery' (7038kb)
Okay
writing 'recovery'
Okay
finished total time etc
then
c:/adb>fastboot reboot
rebooting....
However, this time the response to the last command:
c:/adb>fastboot reboot
(waiting for device) and it hangs and the device doesn't reboot from recovery. However, all the other stuff before it is the same. Not sure what to try next.

Elaborate on this please.
You are in fastboot.
The command fastboot reboot does nothing?
Then what? Did you reboot manually?
You are not in recovery here, so i do not understand "the device does not reboot from recovery".....
Sorry, my lack of understanding. I suppose I mean I am in the bootloader which is where adb>reboot>bootloader puts me so that I can flash twrp.img. Then to get out of there and go back to the rom fastboot>reboot would put me back into the rom and I would get the response >rebooting. Now that doesn't happen it simply says (waiting for device)....So I have to reboot manually.
Just got home and playing around with it. I went into the bootloader and installed just the katkiss rom. It installed fine and then I clicked reboot and it rebooted no problem. But of course that doesn't give me any Play Store or SuperSU.... so there's still hope. So now I'm back in the bootloader and going to try the 3 together again and see what happens.Let you know shortly

I WILL UPLOAD SCREEN SHOT ONCE I ALREADY COMPILED THEM. THANK YOU
IF YOU LIKE AND HELPED YOU A LOT PLEASE HIT THANKS AND LEAVE A MSG.

Thanks it worked. I was about to complain when twrp recovery does not show up. BUT IT WORKED THANKS
xposed isn't necessary to root the phone. Am I right? Maybe you should explain that in the OP. You'll get people confused down the road if they don't already know what they're flashing.

hi
will it erase internal phone memory (i mean after flushing ROM can i get my data using any recovery software)
i am also using same s219 Rom model lenovo k4 note phone.
Actually i deleted some files unexpectedly from internal memory but i want them back, so i tried many ways but no software is identifying internal memory as a drive. I tried to root using root apps but marshmallow not allowing.
i found this topic, but i have only doubt is after flushing the rom can i recover my data using any recovery software?
Thanks in advance
thank you so much!
now to answer some queries and give thanks...
@Duffy144: glad you like it.
@Bdwilk: thank you for the input, i will do that.
@infected_162k: i haven't tried yet since i haven't been able to check latest OTA, but i will try it now since s218 causes lag and memory leak when using facebook messenger. and as you've said. thanks for the confirmation for s219, at least i am more confident. btw, does this really solve the memory leak of the s218?
@anvesh.k yes it will delete all files as the procedure requires you to factory reset your handset.
Rooted K4 Marshmallow
Damn. Finally. I got root. Can finally get rid of that Cell Broadcast. Thanks Sir ansei. The unlocking of bootloader, flashing of twrp and supersu process is pretty much straight forward and will only take you about less than 10 minutes.
Am not sure if this is a systemless root i have. If so, it's great. I am on S_219. Zero performance or stability issues.
I feel my K4 Note runs smoother and snappier compared to S150 row. Still getting the hang of the revamped user interface though.
Overall, Marshmallow 6.0 S_219 runs great with unlocked bootloader, twrp and supersu.
Can someone confirm if this works with 2 gb / 32 variant?

Amm, about that memory leak thing, i basically know what that is cause it was a huge problem in my father's phone(gionee m3). But i exactly don't know how to know if it's still there or not as I use messenger hardly 2-3 times a week. guide me about this so I can tell you exactly.
Another thing that will help other users: I have to factory reset my phone due to a google error ( unable to communicate with Google server). I was not sure about root and xposed will be gone or not. But here is the result : lost both, root and xposed. Just flashed both again, super su and xposed framwork, worked

Old data? Not sure what you are referring to. After the unlocking of bootloader, flashing or twrp and root, restarted the phone in normal mode. Went through the setup wizard and all. Reinstalled my usual stuff. Back to where I left in Lollipop. Zero issues with Marshmallow 6.0 S_219.
Sir Ansei, everything is fine except 1 minor issue, when rebooting to TWRP, I often get the black screen. Power cycling the phone works. Any ideas?

May be what he trying to tell is he accidentally deleted some of his important stuff and now he wants to get it back with the apps that use root to dig around. But as per my experience, it only work if that portion of sd card of internal storage is stayed untouched not if overwritten by something else. But if you already rooted, just give it a try...maybe you'll be lucky...

I cannot get fastboot to recognize my device & perform the bootloader unlock. Honor 8: Nougat (Android 7.x) B360 - TWRP and Root HOW TO

I'd like to create a new thread on installing TWRP and rooting Android Nougat (7.x) on version B360 of the Honor 8. All the threads I see are people frantically trying to restore their phone to their previous glory. To keep people from asking "will this work on yada yada model, *I* have a FRD-L04 which is the 32gb unlocked SINGLE SIM variant sold locally at Best Buy here in the states and I'm pretty sure the FRD-L09 is the international DUAL SIM version with 64GB and I believe firmware for both of these are different? If not, please correct me. The process should be the same for all variants, but the files used will be different.
I want to update this OP and keep it as up to date as possible. If we can get 3 or more people to confirm a certain process works in this thread, I will update it with the proper links to all tools/files/versions of TWRP and SuperSU as well as firmware that's needed. I think I currently count eleven different threads all over the place on this and would be nice to have it centralized. Let's help out and get this phone going with a working root on Nougat!!!
Here are the questions I propose:
1. What is the actual steps to root the Honor 8 running a FULL STOCK version of B360 (Android 7.x)?
A. Unlock Bootloader (This process should be the same as always)
B. Flash TWRP (Which version?) This should be a simple flash with fastboot
C. Flash SuperSU (Which version?) This should be a simple flash with TWRP
D. What are the current issues with this process? (encryption issues, formatting, unable to access the Data partition, etc)
E. How to revert back (and when I say back, I mean ANY working state of Nougat (Android 6.x) or Marshmallow(Android 7.x))
F. How to install extras (Xposed for example, etc)
If I can have answered the questions above, I will clean it up and move it over to the guide section. As it stands now we have no guide. We just need clarification on what works, what doesn't and the process.
Also, PLEASE be kind to those who don't speak English as their primary language. The Honor 8 is an international phone and I see many people getting angry because they don't understand or don't follow instructions correctly because the OP didn't clearly state what they did. Let's help each other out!
Here's an example step by step for unlocking the bootloader below. This is what I'd like to do for each of the questions above.
A: Unlocking the bootloader (UNDERSTAND THAT BY UNLOCKING THE BOOTLOADER ALL YOUR DATA ON THE PHONE WILL BE ERASED AS IF YOU'RE PULLING IT OUT OF THE BOX FOR THE FIRST TIME)
1. Go to Huawei's EMUI site and log in. If you need to create a new account, do so. Link here: http://www.emui.com/en/plugin/hwdownload/download
2. Click on the DOWNLOAD link at the top of the site.
3. Underneath the search field you will see a green link that says "Unlock Bootloader". Click it and follow the instructions. You will be asked to enter in several pieces of information about your phone.
4. Once you've filled out all the information, you will receive your unlock code at the bottom of the screen. Write this down and save it. This number will NEVER change.
5. On your Honor 8, go to Settings > About and tap on the Build Number seven times until you unlock the Developer Settings.
6. In Developer Settings, check Enable OEM Unlock.
7. Scroll down a bit more and check USB Debugging.
8. Go to Huawei's site and download their HiSuite and install it. This installs the OFFICIAL Honor 8 USB driver. Link here: http://consumer.huawei.com/minisite/HiSuite_en/index.html Once the app is installed, you can unselect start with Windows under settings.
9. Plug in your Honor 8 with the provided USB cable. Give it about 45 seconds to install the driver and recognize it. You may need to go to your phone and tap on "Allow File Access". You will be presented with a question asking if you'd always like to trust the computer you just connected to. Select yes, if this is your primary computer you will be working with.
10. Now download the most up to date ADB drivers. A Google employee has created one link to get that and make it easy. Link here: https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools.html
11. Open the zip file you just downloaded and create a folder on your computer easy to get to (I recommend c:\ADB) and paste those files there so they are extracted.
12. Now open the folder up in Windows Explorer if you closed it and hold down the Shift key and RIGHT click in the open area and click "Open command window here"
13. Type adb devices and hit enter. You should see a device ID as a response in the window.
14. Type adb reboot bootloader and hit enter. Give it a couple of seconds and the phone will load the bootloader.
15. Now type fastboot devices and hit enter. You should see your device ID appear again.
16. LAST CHANCE before it wipes everything and unlocks the booloader!!! Type fastboot oem unlock XXXXXXXXXX (where XXXXXXXXXX is the unlock code you received on step 4) and hit enter. It will ask if you're sure. Once this is done, the phone will wipe your data, unlock the phone and reboot. Your Honor 8's bootloader is now unlocked.
B. Flash TWRP (Which version?) This should be a simple flash with fastboot. This is already discussed in another post, but I will put here for reference.
1. Grab a working copy of TWRP for the Honor 8 here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70893767&postcount=408
2. Download TWRP into the same folder you used in step A above (where you're keeping all your files)
2. Navigate in Windows Explorer to this location and hold down the Shift key and RIGHT click in the open area and click "Open command window here"
3. Type adb devices and hit enter. You should see a device ID as a response in the window.
4. Type adb reboot bootloader and hit enter. Give it a couple of seconds and the phone will load the bootloader.
5. Now type fastboot devices and hit enter. You should see your device ID appear again.
6. Type fastboot flash recovery frd-twrp.img and hit enter.
7. Once this is complete, unplug your phone.
8. Hold Volume UP and Power at the same time. Release ONLY the Power button after the blue Honor logo appears.
9. You now are booted into TWRP and it's been successfully flashed.
C. Flash SuperSU (Which version?) This should be a simple flash with TWRP. This is a crazy process because of the encryption on the Data partition. Below is the exact steps I can confirm works from the help of others on here.
1. Boot into TWRP
2. Once there, when asked to keep system read only? - swipe to allow modifications
3. Tap Install
4. Tap Select Storage - Select your SD card
5. Select the supersu file "SuperSU-v2.79-201612051815-EMUI5.0.zip"
6. Swipe to confirm flash
7. Ignore the multiple errors: "Failed to mount '/data' (Invalid argument)
8. Go back to the main menu
9. Select Reboot to Recovery
10. When asked to keep system read only? - swiped to allow modifications (again)
11. Tap Wipe
12. Tap Format Data
13. Type YES then hit enter
14. It will format data using make_ext4fs..
15. When finished, tap Reboot System
16. Reboot back into TWRP
17. Swipe to allow modifications (You can check the box to never show this again)
18. Tap Install
19. Select storage
20. Select your SD card
21. Select the supersu file "SuperSU-v2.79-201612051815-EMUI5.0.zip"
22. Swipe to confirm flash
23. You should see NO ERRORS now when installing SuperSU
24. Wipe cache/dalvik
25. Swipe to wipe
26. Reboot system
Once here, you can download root checker and it will verify you have root access - BUT.. see section D below!
D. What are the current issues with this process? (encryption issues, formatting, unable to access the Data partition, etc)
Some applications like Root Checker will verify that you have root. Other applications will even prompt you (like any of the basic quick reboot apps that easily let you back into recovery) but other major apps like BusyBox and Viper4Audio (when asking to load the driver) will simply fail upon installation. I'm not sure why, since you have R/W access to both the system and the newly unencrypted data partition. I'm really hoping someone can help with this one!
E. How to revert back (and when I say back, I mean ANY working state of Nougat (Android 6.x) or Marshmallow(Android 7.x))
F. How to install extras (Xposed for example, etc)
I know and have done A, B, and C, but as for the rest I'm not too sure about those.
Maybe in the wrong section but thank you.

Yes, but twrp read it as ext file, i tested both format f2fs and ext4, i dont feel any different between those 2.
Yes, you can changed the data format to f2fs with twrp but if you reverted back to MM, its requred to changed the data to ext4 format, if not, you'll get bootloop. (dont know if its twrp bugs or not)
Worst scenario, you'll lost all stock recoveries and everything.
I've been there... Lol

Are you saying I can format /data with F2FS to remove the encryption? I am assuming TWRP does not support the encryption yet. Bootlop sux but most important stuffs on my phone is stored on the SD card anyway so it's not too bad to start over.
Maybe it's just me but it seems encryption adds a bit of risks when playing around with rooting. Has there been a scenario where you *can't* recover from bootloop permanently?

I am afraid of running into this issue from a fellow xda. The person still doesn't have a solution. https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-8/help/encrypted-data-mount-t3537645
I'm running into issues with Bluetooth activation, and previously NFC, which i fixed by reflashing the hw_update package, but still no Bluetooth.
I've followed each and every single step on this guide, and BT was working perfectly before.
Any ideas where this may be coming from ?
Still, thanks or the guide
For the SuperSU instructions, you don't have to reformat /data. Yes, TWRP won't be able to access it, but you really only need that for making full system backups. You can access everything in /system/ and then ADB push to /data/ after boot, or fastboot flash an image to /data/ from bootloader. It's not ideal, but it saves you from having to wipe out your configuration.
I'll echo the above poster, as long as you're bootloader unlocked and can issue fastboot commands I'm not sure you're truly bricked. Worst case scenario you ought to be able to flash individual partition images to recover, I unpacked the Nougat update zip to extract the partition images and I've been using those when my tinkering results in a bootloop -- corrupted boot and corrupted recovery I fixed easily.
Hello. Im coming from general topic on Honor 8 rooting but my issue is related to Android MM.
So i had stock EMUI 4.1 (Android 6.0) which i unlocked, flashed TWRP and SuperSU.
Today EMUI 5 (Android 7 ) update came by air so i installed it. After update - no TWPR neither SuperSU.
I enabled Developer options and saw "Enable OEM unlock" switch in OFF state and grayed out (impossible to switch ON).
So now i cannot flash TWPR as fastboot gives error "Command not allowed".
During boot phone says that it is unlocked, FRP lock. Otherwise it boots and works fine but no root.
Any solution possible?
Thank you.

Do you have any idea how can I get EMUI 5.0 without rooting?

LineageOS 16.0 appears to be live for the Essential Phone. Anybody try it yet?

I can't speak for the rest of you, but I've been waiting for LineageOS to support this phone since I bought it almost a year ago. I saw a post on /r/LineageOS indicating that mata was finally being supported and sure enough here it is:
https://download.lineageos.org/mata
Since there doesn't appear to be a thread on the topic yet, I figured I'd go ahead and create one so all interested parties can discuss it. I probably won't get around to flashing it myself until this weekend and I'd love to hear how it's working for other people prior to that (and if not, hell I'll flash it and roll the dice).

I've specifically noticed touch issues in Pokémon GO. Unable to reproduce the problem reliably, but it seems that after several hours of uptime single-finger touches no longer register (again, only in PoGO -- other apps work flawlessly). Strangely, using 1 finger as an anchor anywhere on the screen, then tapping the intended button with a 2nd finger will register correctly.
Fortunately, I've been able to resolve the intermittent issue with a simple reboot.
Edit: Looks like touch issues in games may have been present back in 15.1.
Steps that I followed to get it up and running

Clean install steps, WILL destroy ALL data, make backups!! before performing any of this and as always YMMV
0: (optional) Update firmwares/radios etc. to latest
0.1: Download latest stock package. [URL: https://www.essential.com/developer/current-builds]
0.2: Unzip to a location and modify the install script flashall.sh(*nix)/flashall.bat(win) to remove the reboot line (last line)
0.3: Reboot to bootloader: Keep pressing vol down + power buttons OR adb reboot bootloader via a privileged OS terminal.
0.3: Run the install script with admin privs: sudo ./flashall.sh(*nix) OR (run as admin) flashall.bat(win)
0.4: Reboot bootloader: Keep pressing vol down, select using power button hen you see the option OR fastboot reboot-bootloader
1: Erase userdata: sudo fastboot -w
1.1: (very optional) check slot to make sure we are in slot a (sudo fastboot getvar current-slot), if not then boot to slot a.
2: Install twrp to boot (fastboot flash boot TWRP-SEP.img or latest twrp image) (Note: I use that specific twrp image because the touchscreen works for me YMMV)
3: Boot to twrp using vol up/down buttons and power button to make the selection.
Now we are within TWRP and hopefully touch works, if the touch doesn't work, try to use a different TWRP build or try to use adb shell commands, indicated below (where applicable)
4: Here we wipe and format everything (if no touch then adb shell twrp wipe <system/data>)
4.1: Format data (Any adb shell commands to achieve a similar result?, "adb shell twrp wipe data" maybe)
4.1.1: (optional) format data to f2fs
4.2: Wipe system (adb shell twrp wipe system)
5: We start copying and initial installing ROM files to device, (adb push <file> /sdcard/)
5.1: Copy and install file: Lineageos rom [URL: https://download.lineageos.org/mata]
5.2: Copy and install file: TWRP installer [URL: https://dl.twrp.me/mata/]
6: Reboot to recovery, this should boot back up to twrp (any adb shell command to achieve this?) (Note: This step is needed otherwise gapps installation *may* fail later)
7: Now we copy and install rest of the files to device in order. (adb push <file> /sdcard/) OR (if sideloading: adb sideload <file>)
7.1: Here you get to choose if you don't want google integration (Lucky You!)
7.1.1: (optional) Copy and install file: <nanodroid> if you are interested in going the microg route. [URL: https://nanolx.org/nanolx/nanodroid]
7.1.2: (optional) Copy and install file: <OpenGapps pico> (or whatever you want man). [URL: https://opengapps.org/]
7.2: (optional, needed if disabling forced encryption) Copy and install file: DM verity_forceencrypt zip file (download zip from github and remove .git files and recompress to .zip, making sure the filename is (without quotes): "Disable_Dm-Verity_ForceEncrypt_master" [URL: https://github.com/Zackptg5/Disable_Dm-Verity_ForceEncrypt/archive/master.zip]
7.3: (optional, needed if root is desired or if disabling forced encryption in 7.2) Copy and install file: <Magisk stable> [URL: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk]
7.4: (optional, untested, may break OTA) Perform step 5.2 again if you want to maintain TWRP as recovery.
8: Reboot to system.
8.1: (optional) If device is consistently bootlooping (Note: 2-4 interim reboots are normal), then GOTO step 1.
8.2: (optional) If a system app is force closing, try to erase its data and cache first, otherwise GOTO step 1.
profit?? (and/or optionally cry over wasted time in this possibly pointless exercise)

Thanks for this excellent step by step guide. I didn't get touch to work on my TWRP (latest version from TWRP site) so I did use adb shell commands in TWRP but unfortunately I didn't manage to install GApps. I think I'm missing the step 6. you are describing. I have LOS running with root but no GApps.
Any guess on how I can manage to reboot to recovery while I'm in TWRP sideload mode to get back to TWRP again?
Thanks !
Another way to use twrp without touch is by using a mouse. If you have one with a type C connector, plug it in and you can flash LOS and the twrp installer. Then boot back to recovery and flash GAPPS. I had to do it this way but I had an adapter for the type C plug so I could use a regular mouse. The adapter came with my Pixel 2XL.
I kept getting error 70, so I used MindTheGapps, which installed fine. Don't know if there's any adverse effects of doing that though, by my phone seems to be working fine.
Wish there was some way to configure fullscreen on the notch though.

Edit: Looks like touch issues in games may have been present back in 15.1.

is there a better solution? It no longer registers my touches after several minutes, so I need to reboot my phone to play games every time…Because of the bad optimization of the kernel, before my phone runs smoothly there is some annoying minutes…
And when I try to flash Neutrino Kernel and reboot, all my PH-1 does is stuck in "phone is starting" with a dialog reminding me that there is an internal error with my system, and it never truly enters the launcher… Has anyone tried yet?

Been running the 20190614 nightly for ~13 hours straight without the need to reboot. Pokémon GO is still running smooth!
Edit: Touch problems started again a couple hours after posting this. Fortunately, a reboot still resolves the issue.
Anyone try LineageOS for microg? Keep trying to flash the rom but no dice, just get sent back to twrp.

Same here, unfortunately. The first time (this was a clean flash after a full wipe), it showed the boot animation for an hour before going back to twrp. I tried flashing it again after another wipe, and this time it stayed in the boot animation overnight, for at least ten hours. I'm not sure where to send a bug report or what info to attach to the bug report.
The regular (non-microG) LOS on the other hand, works fine.

Thanks !

I was on Q beta 4 and these steps worked for me:
Here's what worked for me:
fastboot flash boot <twrp image from twrp.me>
<boot into recovery>
Touch isn't working, so instead I do: adb shell twrp sideload
adb sideload <lastest lineage rom>
(again) adb shell twrp sideload
adb sideload <twrp installer zip>
adb reboot recovery
Touch worked in twrp!
Proceeded with installing opengapps/nanodroid and all that jazz.
TBH you don't need touch to achieve most (if not all) functionality of twrp.
To reboot back to recover from within twrp (assuming you have already flashed twrp installer after flashing rom), just do: adb reboot recovery

Brillant post @psychic_quark that was the only guide which worked for me, coming from Q beta 3. Thanks.
Step 1.1 was needed for me to flash boot_a or _b in step 2 depending on the result in 1.1.
@jaylittle thanks also for telling us. I also waited for a year to get LOS on my PH-1. I got it from the amazon deal and was ran invisiblisk ROM of Dec.
I ran the June 15 ROM with opengapps pico and magisk in recent version and yestersay I updated via OTA to June 18 ROM without loosing root. Thats very cool. With other ROMs I had to install magisk after update again.
Did anyone tried to install twrp permanently?
And my second question is about removing the red warn during booting which has to be ack-ed. I found this https://mata.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ under topic "Removing the Red Verity Warning" did anyone tried this and will this remove root?
Thanks for your help.
