[Nexus 5] Optimizing apps at boot when device ran out of battery

Hi everyone,
I have a Google Nexus 5, that has never been rooted.
Nearly each time my phone is running out of battery (meaning nearly every day because I am using Waze, a GPS app, quite often), when Android is starting a message saying "Optimizing 1 of x.. apps" and this take a lot of time (sometimes more than 10 minutes).
Do you know what is causing this issue and how to solve it?
It happens since I upgraded to a previous version of Android but I don't remember which one as is it not the latest one.
Now, my phone is running Android 5.1.1 build LMY48M.

Can't solve your problem, but I will add some information and a test suggestion:
I have a Nexus 7 (2013) Tablet which was recently updated to Lollipop 5.1.1.
Not surprisingly, right after the update, the tablet went through the exact same app optimization process (no surprise there).
Although the tablet was charged and in 'Sleep Mode' last night, I woke up this morning to find the tablet powered off (which I considered strange).
Upon powering it back on, it went through the same app optimization process that you have described.
I considered the possibility that a software update had been applied to the tablet last night which did not require my permission (but that seems unlikely).
Then I wondered if the battery had somehow become depleted and that the app optimization process was a function of the power loss and subsequent restart.
In the Windows environment, an 'ungraceful' shutdown leads to a boot option to start the computer in 'Safe Mode'.
And I had considered the possibility that one or more Android processes or 3rd party apps might have triggered the requirement for app optimization upon restart.
This is what led me to your post.
However, I have now let the battery drain two times, with two subsequent restarts -- and I am not getting the app optimization.
So, I'm not sure what the trigger is -- but I have a suggestion for a test:
Restart your device so it is fresh
Do not start any applications or Android processes (other than those that start themselves)
Leave the device on so that the battery fully drains (you might want to accelerate the process by maximizing the screen brightness)
After the device shuts down due to battery loss -- charge it
Restart the device and see if app optimization happens
If it does not happen -- them maybe your app optimization is related to an ungraceful shutdown of one or more Android processes or 3rd party apps
If it does happen -- then I don't know what's going on
However, we can't ignore the fact that your device is a phone and mine is a tablet
And, therefore, your device always has processes running that might represent an ungraceful shutdown upon battery depletion.
Of course, this does not answer the question relating to the problem I witnessed this morning
But maybe I had too many apps open and too many browser tabs open when my battery depleted (although I still don't know why my battery depleted)
And maybe that triggered my own app optimization
There is one more thing: yesterday, for the first time, I ran an app on the tablet called Slingbox Player
That's the only thing different that I have done on the tablet for many months
And the Slingbox Player was open in the background when I went to sleep
I suppose a badly coded app could have drained my battery
But that still leave the question regarding the app optimization requirement upon restart
Please share your findings.

Battery life considerably worse after update to 9.0

I normally charge once a day, and previously the battery was hardly ever below 50% after 24 hours - I'm a pretty light user.
As an aside, with 9.0 there no longer appears to be possible under battery usage information in Settings to see the percentage of battery that has been used by the various apps and processes.

Click the three dots in the top right and choose battery usage.
As for battery life, mine has improved greatly on Android P

Ok here. 62% drop over night doing nothing suggests you have a rogue app in there. I'm assuming you have ok cellular coverage and nothing has changed there by coincidence. I would reboot and force close every app you have that's not essential overnight and try again. Swipe up from home and clearing those apps doesn't force close the apps. Greenify is an app that (in manual mode) will make it easy to select as many apps as you want and force close the lot of them. If that improves the situation you can then begin to work out which app(s) might be doing bad stuff whilst you sleep...

Battery on my P2 has significantly improved with Pie even if I didn't have any major problem with 8.1 either. Overnight drain 3-4%. After regular use after a full day I easily exceed 5h SOT. Everything stock with just Greenify in non root mode. I couldn't be happier, best Android release so far for me.

I've had my p2 installed with PIE for about 2 days now. I suggest giving it a week (which is what I'm doing) and then getting a full overview of how my battery is performing. Usually, after any major OS updates, being that apps are trying to utilize your resources and a new version of Android would try to allocate and learn your usage (in this case battery), you'd get a much better definitive idea of your overall performance.
I also think that since its now available, turn on Adaptive Battery mode. After a day of upgrading the OS, Adaptive battery at my 26 hr mark of upgrade said that one of my apps was taking in a lot of resources to be used in the background (ES File Explorer). I made AB to stop ES from taking battery resources.
So in conclusion, if it a week and then you'll be able to get a better overall understanding of whether your battery REALLY has gotten worse or better.

Exact same problem here after updating. Even tried a factory reset in case it was an updating issue. Same problem. My battery is currently at 43% 4 hours after a full charge. And I've barely used it. This is really poor.
No new apps installed.
My Oreo battery life was great. I'll try shutting off adaptive battery as suggested - but seems a real shame if one of the flagship battery saving features is doing the total opposite on Google's current flagship phone!
Doesn't seem to be a massively common issue so not sure if a likelihood of a patch either

Just a quick update - Google play services has now become the biggest drain on my battery, just as it was before I factory reset after the first install...
Anyone else had the same?

I had the same issue and did the same thing... until dp3 and my battery usage was terrible again even with adaptive battery turned off. I ended up turning it on again and after about a week my battery usage was back where it was before. So there doesn't seem to be a magic bullet here. FWIW app usage offered no insight as to what was causing the drain in the first place.

I got like 8+ hours of SOT.... no mobile network though, all day wifi use only.

I have this issue. Dropped about 40% over night. I found that turning wifi off stopped the drain completely. I did not have this problem with Oreo at all so it's not the networks im connecting to. Weird thing is this did not happen when I first installed Pie. This started happening about 3 days into installing. Also, I put it in safe mode and saw the same drain with wifi on vs off.

I seem to have fixed my terrible battery life!
The below might be worth a try if you're still suffering from it.
I noticed in GSAM that RCSphone was the front runner in battery drain so did a little research and found this site.
SOLUTION: Turn off app preview messages (settings / google / app preview messages). Apparently its only function is to allow Allo messages to be received without the app. To me, totally pointless as i don't know - nor have ever met - a single person who uses it.
I've gone from draining 8-10% an hour (screen off) to around 2.5%/hour and from 1hr 35 total SOT to 3hrs 39 minutes with 32% left (and an hour of that was Google maps navigating, so a proper work out for the phone).
Do give it a try and let me know if it works for you.
Although there's room for improvement (idle 2.5%/h seems high to me!) and it's ludicrous that I should have spent several hours finding a fix for this on 100% stock android, I'm very happy to have a usable battery life back again...

UPDATE: Seems like in the night I lost 40% again. Idle drain climbed it's way up to 5.6% in the night. Still an improvement from where it was before, but not quite as good as it first appeared...

@Burkules I drop 0.4 - 0.7%/hr over night with Bluetooth off/Wifi on/strong cellular signal. Much the same as it was with Oreo. Not quite sure why's there's such a big range (almost 2x) but either way it's ok for me. Did you try the technique above?

Cheers for getting back on this.
I left it on safe mode the other night and it still drained absurdly fast, which suggests to me it's a google system drain rather than rogue app, but will try again with app preview now switched off. Likewise will try greenify again and report back.

Likewise maybe app preview set to off will help me even more. If I recall correctly rogue apps can cause some google system apps to wake up, but perhaps not in safe mode...

So, switched off adaptive battery again (i'd enabled it after my short-lived miracle recovery the other day) and now I'm down to 4%/hour. Which is better but still really high for idling! Cleared cache and data in Google play services for good measure too as it still comes up super high on the list of battery drainers.
Booting into safe mode now to check the drain without adaptive there and will report back...
UPDATE: Exactly the same drain in safe mode. This is a straight up google problem....

Haven't tried this - but if the battery drain is the same in safe mode (with only google/system apps running) I can't see how it will make a difference. Ill be in rehearsal for several hours today so will force close everything and will then be leaving my phone idling for a few hours anyway.
I signup up to the google play services beta yesterday, and google play services no longer appears as one of the top battery users... but the battery drain is the same and the numbers given in *all* battery apps (Gsam/accubattery/system) don't add up to anything close to the actual % drain. System battery displays 15% of usage (with 'full device usage' on show) when the battery is quite evidently at 48% from full charge. Total cluster****. So pissed off I updated.
Have you seen any improvement in yours with any of these workarounds?

Nothing to lose by trying. And as I said, Greenify makes it easy/quick to do. Force closing is almost as good as uninstalling those apps as the vast majority of installed apps won't restart or run in background until you use them for the first time again. In my experience, quiescent battery consumption (e.g. noticed over night):
Is vastly affected negatively by poor cellular signal strength. Marginal coverage can really drain the battery fast.
Gradually gets worse between reboots
Can be improved (once it degrades) if you force close all the apps you've installed, and swipe away the background apps just before you go to bed!
If quiescent consumption suddenly rises I can normally fix it by force closing all the apps (not being sure which was the one gone rogue/suddenly misbehaving)
At night I generally have excellent cellular coverage, good WiFi, and Bluetooth is off. NFC is always off
I don't enable sync on 2 of the 3 Gmail accounts I have configured
I disable notifications from any apps I don't actually need them from
Quiescent battery consumption is between, say, 0.4% and, 0.7%/hr at home, around 2 to 3%/hr when out and about which I put down to all background data being driven over 4G instead of Wifi, and variable cellular coverage
I've not noticed quiescent battery consumption change between Oreo and Pie, but this may be because I keep force closing apps at night and not giving adaptive battery (which I have on) a chance to have the same effect intelligently
Turning off app preview messages has made no practical different for me
I'm completely stock (stock launcher, not rooted, etc.)
If you can't fix it, at least a factory reset as the next experiment has the option to restore *most* of what was there before (so long as you have had the backup setting enabled). But because not everything is restored it's still a pain. And if that doesn't work it's another factory reset and test and then restore everything manually and gradually :-S. But I think you already tried that?

Thanks, just tried that as well and my battery has stayed resolutely at 68% on idle beside me for the last few hours, previously it had gone from 100% down to 69% in about 4 hours whilst similarly doing nothing.

Android 10 unstable

I recently bought an S10e. Lots of improvements over my S7 - but I'm finding Android 10 to be very unstable. About once a day it gets into a mode where apps keep crashing and reopening.
I have turned off all the power management features I can find, but this still happens. Rebooting fixes the problem for a while (i.e. a matter of hours through a day or so).
The phone is an SM-G970W with the 1 Feb 2020 update (G970WVLS3CTA3).
Has anyone else encountered this kind of problem?

I have the same build and model with the same security patch update for Feb 2020. No issues here just waiting on one UI 2.1 is all. It's a pretty rocking phone.

Do you use any apps that require special permissions, such as AccuBattery or GSam? I had both installed before, and I'm wondering whether that may have led to the instability.

No I didn't use any apps like that. I use that standard array of Google and Samsung apps. Messages, gallery, pretty vanilla stuff.
Not many third party apps so that could be a reason. I have, however, installed an IPTV APK.

Under battery in device care I have power mode set to optimize. But adaptive power saving is not on.
Under app power management right below the power mode option I have both the adaptive battery option and put unused apps to sleep selected on.
That's pretty much it. I have a young family so that keeps me busy. I wouldnt say I'm a power user or anything like that but I watch YouTube and read a ton of articles and respond to emails throughout the day. I also make use of WhatsApp and Google duo video calls during this period of self isolation.
With that said, I get pretty much a full day of use out of it. By the time the kids are in bed and I'm ready to call it a day I'm at around 20- 30 percent.
Is the phone perfect? No, but I like the smallish form factor with the really decent specs. I expect to use this device for at least another 3 years. I've even prepared to replace the battery when it starts to become sluggish. There's helpful YouTube videos on what tools and methods are required for a battery replacement. Just can't find a modern phone in this form factor anymore.

I've tried charging with this feature turned on 2 times now, and both times the battery level was dropping., so where's that battery degradation reduction they write about?
Furthermore, H.S. power control supposedly prevents the battery from charging, but during both tests, Franko Kernel Manager was showing that the battery was charging, not in a usual way though. Speed was going back and forth between charging rapidly (as fast as 6000 mA) and charging slowly (as slow as 12 mA).
"Limits performance reduction and battery degradation caused by device overheating during charging. The battery doesn't get charged when this feature is on. Turn off this feature when charging". So you launch a game, go through the game enhancer's features, and see this confusing AF wording, which tells you the feature prevents overheating while charging and gaming, but at the same time tells you not to turn it on while charging and gaming.

I use this feature when navigating. I was happy that it's not only available for games. Worked well. At least battery level didn't changed after some hour drive. Didn't checked it with Franco kernel Manager.
You selected the App and the colored bar appeared when App was in use?

Must be a bug, works fine on my phone though....try resetting the phone perhaps?

Yes, the enhancer works, just not exactly as advertised.

I've spent quite some time on customizing the phone, installing apps etc. so I'd rather not start all over again. Unless there won't be any custom ROMs for a very long time...

it is a bug. if you still have problem. or other people have a problem there a way to fix it without factory reset. if your phone running android 12 or android 11. BUT not lasted firmware(of the android version.). try to download lasted version of Game enhancer(i recommended version 7.x.x instead version 8.x.x, because it more stable on 7, but if you rooted or can install subsystem apk, you can go with lasted version and i more recommended to do so to get more feature), subsystem and monitor apk from apkmirror, dont worry all app have same Game enhancer logo. if you have android lasted android 11 or android 12 firmware, only download Game enhancer and monitor app, as subsystem has been set to persistent app. and cannot be updated. if you are rooted download all app i mention and install as system app then reset your phone. im using xperia 1 ii with version 7.0.A.1.20 game enchaner as my original version came with my firmware have bug and H.S does not work as intended. whoever updated it does fix the problem(you can see with most battery monitor app that charging switch from -x/+x to null or 0) whoever not installing subsystem and lasted monitoring app from cause :
1.powersaver or balance does not effect anymore(but switch to Power save allow phone to use 600-700mah more often, and performance while have same usage sometimes spike to 1000mah sadly the display stay at 60hz, this is not intended as using original app power are limitied to 400-650 while average around 480mah with 40hz display)
2.while congrats you can streaming from you phone now, unless subsystem installed you may only have 1 chance to screenshot thumbnail until you reset user data. as importing image or re screenshot not working without newer subsystem. but at least all stream function working fine as i test it for 1 hours nonstop(just make use you have atleast 20-30mbps UPLOAD as lower than that cause stuttering on youtube even on 480p stream)
3.it may or may not disable/bypass thermal throttling while gaming(cant confirm but on my phone using original apk will give me around 280gips max then down to around 160 or 180gips under 5 minutes while using update version will stay more than 300gips, on CPU Thrttling, same as 3d mark, while normal benchmark average, extended test will have better result than most xperia on same model with 99.5% stability and score around 1108 to 1106 from loop 1 to loop 4 with identical performance range from loop 1 to loop 20)
4.recording no longer work on sdcard as they change folder name and older subsystem still using older name, it just keep asking permission
5.on stream and record menu. there option for capture card. it does nothing, even installing another backend app. like audio app from G.E and other app, it still wont work, unless you are rooted and install all backend app as system app, whoever fearnot, you stil can stream your content via type c to hdmi like normal, but dont except you can get audio bypass or settings like xperia 1 IV have,
*again point 3 is unclear as for me performance from older bencmark are deference than now, but it is from era android 11, i can be sony fix thermal issue and performance from firmware and not this trick, but it does effect mine since i can just remove update and see instantly the deference and it may can on your xperia too
*i said both monitoring/monitor app and subsystem app. because it called that but apk file name uploaded as sony multitasking function and GE subsystem
here a proof for point number 3, and not it not with any mod(no fan cooler but no case either with H.S enabled)

Does that also work if you turn the screen off? or does the phone start charging as soon you you turn the screen off?

Hello everyone, I'm in trouble.
22 Ultra is simply eating battery at indescribable levels. Yesterday we went on a trip from work, I left my home with 100%. During the day I did not touch the phone, a bit of a camera but beyond that really nothing. My battery was about 40% after about 3 hours, with no screen use at all! On the other hand, a friend at work with Xiaomi came out with 100% and after 3 hours was on 85, and he did touch the phone here and there.
I don't know how that makes sense, and it's no longer clear to me what to do to solve the problem. I debloat, deleted and disabled a number of irrelevant apps but still, the battery is being eaten. How can I solve it? Please help me!

Draining battery so fast, 20% per hour while idle is not normal, so you definitely have a problem.
It looks that there are two possibilities here:
- Battery malfunction
- Some active process in the background that is using lots of processor power constantly.
If battery is damaged / not working properly, the only solution is to replace it. Still, this doesn't look like a case of duying battery.
If you have some persistent process running in the background that you can't get rid of by debloating, it can't be stopped by restarting the phone, and its not visible in the battery usage section, i would say that factory reset is the most effective option here, since you stated that you tried to deal with it in a various ways already.
You could also wait a bit until you get chance to update to OneUI 5 / Android 13, which should solve your problem, if it's software related.

I want to keep the factory reset as the last option....
Every single app that I don't need at the background I disabled from running in background.

Try to wipe your system cache.....it won't do a factory reset but might solve the issue while keeping your phone as it is.
Volume UP button along with the power button until you see Android screen
Scroll down with volume down until you reach wipe system cache and reboot
sometimes, it won't show up while you press the buttons....in that case, connect your phone to your PC/Laptop with any USB C cable and then do it.
Second solution, you can try Samsungs App Booster.....get an apk from the net. It generally helps as well.
