[Nexus 5] Optimizing apps at boot when device ran out of battery - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I have a Google Nexus 5, that has never been rooted.
Nearly each time my phone is running out of battery (meaning nearly every day because I am using Waze, a GPS app, quite often), when Android is starting a message saying "Optimizing 1 of x.. apps" and this take a lot of time (sometimes more than 10 minutes).
Do you know what is causing this issue and how to solve it?
It happens since I upgraded to a previous version of Android but I don't remember which one as is it not the latest one.
Now, my phone is running Android 5.1.1 build LMY48M.
Thanks a lot.

Can't solve your problem, but I will add some information and a test suggestion:
I have a Nexus 7 (2013) Tablet which was recently updated to Lollipop 5.1.1.
Not surprisingly, right after the update, the tablet went through the exact same app optimization process (no surprise there).
Although the tablet was charged and in 'Sleep Mode' last night, I woke up this morning to find the tablet powered off (which I considered strange).
Upon powering it back on, it went through the same app optimization process that you have described.
I considered the possibility that a software update had been applied to the tablet last night which did not require my permission (but that seems unlikely).
Then I wondered if the battery had somehow become depleted and that the app optimization process was a function of the power loss and subsequent restart.
In the Windows environment, an 'ungraceful' shutdown leads to a boot option to start the computer in 'Safe Mode'.
And I had considered the possibility that one or more Android processes or 3rd party apps might have triggered the requirement for app optimization upon restart.
This is what led me to your post.
However, I have now let the battery drain two times, with two subsequent restarts -- and I am not getting the app optimization.
So, I'm not sure what the trigger is -- but I have a suggestion for a test:
Restart your device so it is fresh
Do not start any applications or Android processes (other than those that start themselves)
Leave the device on so that the battery fully drains (you might want to accelerate the process by maximizing the screen brightness)
After the device shuts down due to battery loss -- charge it
Restart the device and see if app optimization happens
If it does not happen -- them maybe your app optimization is related to an ungraceful shutdown of one or more Android processes or 3rd party apps
If it does happen -- then I don't know what's going on
However, we can't ignore the fact that your device is a phone and mine is a tablet
And, therefore, your device always has processes running that might represent an ungraceful shutdown upon battery depletion.
Of course, this does not answer the question relating to the problem I witnessed this morning
But maybe I had too many apps open and too many browser tabs open when my battery depleted (although I still don't know why my battery depleted)
And maybe that triggered my own app optimization
There is one more thing: yesterday, for the first time, I ran an app on the tablet called Slingbox Player
That's the only thing different that I have done on the tablet for many months
And the Slingbox Player was open in the background when I went to sleep
I suppose a badly coded app could have drained my battery
But that still leave the question regarding the app optimization requirement upon restart
Please share your findings.

[Q] Wifi issues and battery drain lollipop 5.01

Purchased the shield tablet with controller yesterday. It came with 4.4 and seemed to run fine (wifi speed very fast etc) Soon after upgraded to 5.01 and the problems started..
There seems to be the Miscellaneous entry under the battery settings which is using around 40% of the battery according to the info. Battery drain seems to be quite fast.
Since then, today I decided to unlock bootloader and root the device which was successful. Miscellaneous entry does not seem to appear anymore
However there is the wifi issue that has occurred since I updated to 5.01. When the tablet goes to sleep and when I wake it up, connection is lost (and rather annoying where a game needs to download 1gb+ of data). It does also occur while I am using the tablet. Wifi sometimes just disconnects (and the entry on the wifi list for my router is showing as "saved" - clicking on connect, starts it up again..
I have checked through the settings and disabled the wifi off when sleep option as well as gps only for location etc, but still to no avail.
Has anyone encountered and solved this issue on lollipop? Or is this also an issue with 4.4? I did not use it for long before updating to 5.01 hence not sure If that problem would occur then (but seemed blistering fast for the hour or so when I was testing it)
I'm having the same issue. I looked on the forums on their website and it seems this is still a problem for a good amount of people. Can't find any solutions though. Thought maybe a hard reset might do the trick but that didn't help. Pretty frustrating...
Wifi connectivity seems ok when I am near the access point, but seems that the sensitivity somewhat has been reduced since the update (as the connection was more stable and reliable further away from the router on 4.4)
Hows your battery after rooting? Does it still drain horribly?
I have the same problem

THAT DRIVE ME CRRAAZZZYYYY!!!! the same happens to me everyday and I can't find anything about it online.. somebody please solve our problem!
I think I have partially solved the problem. The below is what I have done (Will at some point activate some of these options one by one and see which one would be the main culprit)
Settings->Wifi->Advanced Wifi - Turn off Ethernet override and turn off "scanning always available"
Settings->Wifi->Advanced Wifi - Keep on "turn wifi on during sleep" - Can turn this option off for some additional battery life
Settings->Controller->Disable "enable gamepad mapper" - From other sources it seems that this may be one of the main culprits in battery power sucking
Settings->Location->Turn this off (If wanting to keep on, leave it on GPS only)
Using the above settings, and charging the tablet approximately 15 hours ago, the battery life of the tablet has decreased by only 6% (and currently there is no - miscellaneous showing on the battery option)
There is still the issue with weak wifi (It works perfectly well when the device is near the access point) perhaps a future update may increase the sensitivity somewhat
One other important thing.. I decided to hard reset the tablet after upgrading from 4.4 to 5.01. This may help. Once this is done, then follow the steps above
Did miscellaneous ever come back for you? I did reset and changed all the settings and miscellaneous wasn't there for about 2 hours and then came back. Down to 50% battery with miscellaneous taking up 17%. I'm now wondering if this is an issue with the software or my tablet in particular...
For me, once I disabled the gamepad mapper, I no longer experience the outrageous battery drain issue, and misc. no longer appears in the battery status page and has not returned.

I didn't experience this miscellaneous battery drain until the most recent 2.2 update. When I upgraded to lollipop I did a complete wipe, rooted and unlocked the boot loader. When I updated to 2.2 I just flashed via recovery and wiped dalvic/cache.
I'm wondering if I need to do a complete wipe. I haven't seen any solutions to this, but it's strange that it just now started to be a problem for me.

The main culprit seems to be the "game mapper". - the system that maps the controller to touch screen controls. I guess perhaps updating to 2.2 turned it back on. Turn it off via settings and reboot and see if that makes any difference.

Thanks for the reply,
I turned the game mapper off via settings, and still got the misc. drain, so I froze the nvidia game mapper and a few other nvdia controller system apps via titanium back up and I'm still getting the misc. battery drain. I just wiped the cache, and dalvik cache 3 times, but I doubt that will do anything. It's looking like I will have to wipe and do a clean install, just seems so weird that something that didn't even change the android version number would give me this problem.
It's really annoying as the battery drains soo fast (like 20% just reading a book in my e-reader app)
before I wipe I just wanted to see if others had this problem with the latest update, as it doesn't appear too common I will do a full wipe later when I have time. I hope that fixes it.

I have the exact same issues as you describe. WiFi is about 25% of what it should be even standing right next to my netgear nighthawk. All other wifi devices work fine in the house. Disabled game mapper and my misc is still running the battery down. Tried wiping to factory with no luck. System UI crashes sometimes and the tablet freezes up constantly (especially when using Chrome and Google search). I'm thinking it could be Google play services related but not definitely sure.
Sheild LoLi screen changes orientation, goes black then to homescren
So seems you peeps having same problems I have experienced and troubleshot as well, but here is one I can't figure out...
Playing game (TaiChi Panda mmorpg) which only runs in landscape mode. I will be playing and all of a sudden tablet tries to change orientation away from landscape, the screen goes black (or has game shrunk and stuck in middle of screen) then will go black and puts me at my homescreen which is non-responsive and most times I have to hard power down. I've turned off screen/device rotation and still does it. The problem also happens with other apps and stuff at times as well. I've even turned all notifications etc I could cause thought maybe something was trying to interfere.
I have the screen flicker as well at times, feel like watching old black and white movie way it flickers.
Battery lifes went up with some tweaks found here (ty vm!).
Sorry to bump such an old thread, but has anyone figured out what it causing these issues on Lollipop?

Why do Android System, Android OS, & Bluetooth account for majority of battery drain?

Why do Android System, Android OS, & Bluetooth account for majority of battery drain?
On my old Galaxy S4, I found that the screen was almost always the highest battery drain -- and if I saw some app using close to or more than the screen, then I knew something was wrong. However, with my Galaxy S5 (running OptimalROM 13.1), I am consistently seeing Android System is the highest drain, followed by Android OS -- at times I'm getting only 10 to 12 hours of life, but other times I get over a day -- in both cases, it's the Android System and Android OS using the bulk of the power, never an app.
I also see some odd things like Bluetooth using nearly 10%, even though it isn't connected to any devices the entire day -- why would it use that much on standby?
I also see Google Services sometimes using over 10% -- I think that was while I had Google Maps in the background (not navigating).

I believe that is the new normal. Unfortunately, "Andoid System" in our battery stats is nonspecific: that heading actually covers dozens of little apps and functions. With each successive generation, the phones try to have more features.
You can get a little better idea with GSam Battery Monitor: by clicking on the "Android System", it brings up another window showing you all of these processes. That doesn't mean you'll be able to do much about it, though.
I was able to solve one major problem with ridiculous battery drain by looking more closely: I have a lot of mp3s and pictures on my sdcard. Android system was scanning them, but Samsung indexing service was also scanning them for no useful purpose, and every time I rebooted it would start chewing on them again. I froze the samsung indexing service and the battery life improved by many hours per day.
Where do I disable the Samsung Indexing Service? I doubt it's causing problems, but it's useless to me.

The safest way is to use Titanium Backup to "freeze" IndexService and, optionally, "S Finder". If you run into any issues, you can re-enable them easily by "defrosting" them.
Disabling them doesn't affect me at all because I use a file explorer to browse to my files directly.
OK, I installed GSam Battery Monitor a few weeks ago. Today I am dumbfounded by what my phone is doing -- after undocking it for just two hours and not using it at all, I notice it is hot in my pocket, so I pull it out and see the battery has already dropped to 78%. I check the list of open apps, and there's not much there -- my phone dialer, Camera, Chrome (with no pages open), and Messaging -- that's it.
I check the GSam battery usage, and it says the screen is using 2%, the cell radio 2%, the WiFi 1%, and the rest is "App Usage" -- I click on apps, and Kernel (Android OS) is using ~60%, Bluetooth is using 22%, and Android System is using ~10% -- so they combine for 90% of "App Usage". My Bluetooth is "on" but not connected to anything -- indeed, it is paired with only one device, which I have not even turned on in months -- the phone is getting all of its data via WiFi, which is only using 1%, yet the Bluetooth with nothing to do is using 22%!
What the hell is going on?

I know that sometimes it gets hung up if it encounters a corrupted media file while scanning for them, and that produces the symptoms you're describing. Scan your SDcard (it's fastest to do it on a computer, but there are many ways to accomplish this) for any files that are of size "0 kb" (that is, zero kb) and delete them. See if that resolves your issue.
Also try clearing cache and dalvik cache, just because that can alleviate strange problems for no discernable reason.

Explanation of Nougat Battery Consumption and Workarounds for Better Battery Life

Hello guys. This topic is pretty long and it is hard to read all of it but try to read all of it till end.
Well, let me begin. The main problem of the nougat update is the dramatic increase of battery consumption (for me at least) But why this is happening?
Actually this is a matter of battery managers. Huawei had created a great phone but obviously they messed things up in the software side. Google announced "Doze" feature with Marshmallow. If we could have a brief explanation of "what doze is" is it is basically a battery protection policy created by google. In Android, apps have the ability to use what’s called a “wakelock” to prevent your phone from going into a power-saving deep sleep mode. This deep sleep mode usually kicks in when your phone’s screen is off, but that can get in the way of how some apps work. For example, if you’re using a fitness tracker, you don’t want your phone turning off GPS or your accelerometer just because your phone is in your pocket with the screen turned off.
In principle, this is a good concept. Apps keep your phone awake and working when they need to, and let it sleep when they don’t. This is a problem, though, when every developer thinks their app is important enough to keep your phone on all the time. That’s why apps like Facebook kill your battery, even when you’re not using them.
Doze helps solve this problem by periodically blocking wakelocks and shutting off network access if your phone goes unused for a while. It will then periodically allow apps to check in during “maintenance windows” every so often (these windows occur less frequently the longer you don’t use your device). Here is a graphical explanation of how doze works versus time:
http://itresan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/doze-header.jpg

If we turn back to the main topic, as I mentioned before, Huawei has some difficulties combining it's own features with google's. Huawei has its own battery manager. That's why you are not receiving some notifications from facebook or whatsapp. That is because that freaking battery manager shuts everything off but still, since it has a very poor approach, the system drains battery. It is basically a matter of doze does not kicking in. As you can see, the battery usage when the screen is turned on is about the same. However, the same thing cannot be seem when the screen is off.
So what to do in order to save some juice?
-There is some workarounds for doze kicking in like these ones:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.yirgalab.dzzz
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.suyashsrijan.forcedoze
These two apps have different approaches. I prefer ForceDoze as it seems the google's intended way.
I want to highlight this item because this might be the most important thing in this topic. If you don’t do anything with your phone, Doze will still do its job. It runs almost invisibly in the background. Occasionally you’ll get a few messages at once, rather than spread over a few minutes, but for the most part there’s no noticeable change. In other words this is a bit different from the conventional full deep sleep and you do not have to afraid from doze as you do with the full deep sleep.
-DO NOT CLEAN YOUR RAM TOO OFTEN. This will cause closed apps re-open and hence, more cpu usage.
-No! Cleaners, Task managers and other stuff does not work! As I mention before, they even lead more battery consumptions.
-Huawei has poor google service implementations. Even one or two implementation has some bugs that causing battery drain(for example: google backup). Try to turn them off.
-Know when to reboot your phone. Too frequent reboots may do the same thing as you cleaning your ram. However, rebooting cleans app caches so the system will work smoother. Once a week or two weeks is fine I suppose.
Please hit the "Thanks" button if you like and please point out the missing things and if you see a mistake please warn me for correcting it. I hope you liked the topic.
Have a nice day!

It's probably not because of the doze but the huawei's power manager itself.
Problem starts when phone is not active longer than 2-3 hours. In root I removed phone manager and it did not help fix the push notification problem

Assuming that you are on huawei release (not los releases), untick your app from close apps after screen lock. Then go to apps, settings, special access, and make the system ignore battery optimizations for the spesific app you want to get notification from.
I did everything what I can without succes.

first thanks for this tip. i hate it that i dont receive whatsapp messenges all the time, i hope it will work now.
BTP:
I assume huawei did not remove "doze" from our firmware, but maybe they replaced it with theire own battery manager?
Is there a complete source for doze, so we can check if everything is there? If yes it should not be that hard to activate doze and deactivate the huawei one.
But i guess we need at least the kernel sources to clear things up?

Doze is not on kernel level but it is on software level. Programmatically we can activate what is left from doze or at least simulate it. However, if there is a certain need for doze we should cook a whole new rom and yes, it requires open source too.
But, let's clear a thing here: Huawei did not completely removed doze. Actually, I think they can't do that if they wish to use Android. Just some settings of Huawei conflicts with doze and prevent its functioning.
I'm using the honor 9 with emui 5.1 (android 7.0) and screebl (app used to control how and when screen locks/times out) is constantly getting killed. I have added it to ignore(=allow to run) in battery optimization and it's activated as a device administrator. It is not selected to close (power intensive app prompt) or instructed to close when screen goes off. Yet it repeatedly is getting killed - is there something else I need to do? I can't seem to find anything else I can do to stop it from being killed and it's a major nuisance.

Could you finally solve this?
I also have and Honor 9, and have the same problem with aplicacition radardroid. Is getting killed, and also have all configured to prevent this...
Try by having both in the Settings
-Battery/Close apps after lock screen (uncheck in the list)
-Apps/Settings gear/Special access/Ignore battery optimization (make it allowed)
Thank szgfg,
Both are already well configured, but still closing the app.

Check also is not being closed by the automatic cleanup (so add it to clean whitelisted apps) and that is not being closed due to high consumption...disable that on battery settings... Let the advertisement but do not let phone administrator close that apps automatically
Enviado desde mi EVA-L09 mediante Tapatalk
Hi jcalderonv74,
Thanks for your answer. I didn't know about the clean whitelisted apps, was a surprise to find it. But unfortunetly, everything was well configured.
Option to avoid being closed due to high consumption was already OK.
So nothing to change, everything was as it has to be. Seems more a software problem in EMUI 5.0
After some days without touching anything in the phone's configuration, finally observed that everything is working fine. All aplications configured keep opened, and it's only Radardroid aplication that sometimes closes alone (only sporadically after a recent update)
Seems more an error in Radardroid aplication that in telephone's software. So I'm not worring more about that.

Few Sony Xz problems [ need help]

Hello, members!
I updated my sony about month ago to new android version Oreo (Android 8.0) and at first i was happy that Sony made an update, but when i started to work more with this version day to day i found that there are things that i dont like!
First thing with apps and folders
Apps like Facebook and Massenger all the time show @ app that i have notification (number on the app) and when i open it there is not any notification for me! Apps all the time showing me the same number of notifications on app but there is nothing in it.
Started to search it, maybe somewhere it is - but there is nothing! I deleted apps and install it again - but it show me all the time the same!
I am tired with this thing - i know it is small problem but in my day to day work it is seriously.
Second thing - Guys what we can do with high phone temperature ? Phone is overheating sometimes when i using it and i am not playing games! It getting uncomfortable hot!
Third thing - When phone getting low energy (about 30%) it is automaticly turn on battery saver! Of course phone start to go slow. In setting i can turn off battery saver but it still are slow because i am more than sure that battery saver is still on, but in settings it is off! when i plug charger to phone it starts to work Great!
Can we do something with these things?
P.s. I think it is to many problems for Sony mobile - i was using a lot of Sony phones but about now starting to think change Sony to something else...better!
Hi, I have updated to Oreo as well. Not experiencing the overheating issue. I upgraded to this handset from Galaxy S4 i9507 and that one used to get hot. Maybe try disabling some apps after checking what is using the battery. Maybe you have a sneaky app which is using a lot of CPU.
Generally, this version (second version of Oreo) is a bit slower than Nougat, particularly camera operation. I am seriously considering rooting if I can be sure that DRM and camera will be preserved.
Try factory resetting the device, that tends to solve most of the issues after a big update. Also if your Play services version is 11.7.46 make sure to update to 11.9.51 via apkmirror as the former is confirmed to drain battery.

1. I don't suffer from this issue perhaps try updating your Xperia home launcher
2. The phone does heat up from time to time , all electronics follow the same principle
Electronics will heat up
3. Stamina mode is actually disabled just as it says on the settings, the reason the phone is slow because there is not enough power to be supplied as the demand for performance increases
When power is low your phone struggles to deliver optimal power to performance ratio
To make sure that the phone able to last throughout the day so that you don't miss any calls ,
Performance is decreased in favor for battery runtime

Google App - constant active use = battery drain

(Apologies if there's a better location for this issue)
Wondering if anyone else is having this issue or can at least confirm what their Google app is showing in terms of length of time in active use. I've been having unusual battery drain lately, without any noteworthy changes to my settings or apps. The Google app (version 10.82.8.21.arm64) is showing up as the #1 battery user, and details show time in active use as the entire duration of time my phone is off it's charger. Logically that makes me believe that it's constantly running, and doing so in a way that's draining my battery more than any other time over 2 years of ownership. I realize this one app is responsible for a LOT of the core Android/Pixel functionality, so it's hard to dial in very precisely what might be causing this.
Asking for fellow members to confirm what proportion of their "up time" the Google app is shown as in active use? Am I the only one at 100% on this?
Thanks!
My phone has been off charge for 17hrs 2mins and Google usage is the exact same time. It's only took 2% of the 40% that's been used but still very annoying. Also I don't think the is any way of stop it, I noticed this ages ago now and tried everything I could to stop it but nothing worked, I decided to reset my phone 2 days ago and it's still doing the same. I guess if it only taking up a small percentage of battery then it's not that bad but still really annoying that it's active for so long without any reason.
