It is so sad to see samsung dropping the ball big time on the durability of their phones. Remember the galaxy S1 and S2? They still remain some of the toughest touch screen phones. However all that changed with the S3 which broke on the first sight of concrete and sometimes by merely getting some force inside the pocket or so I have heard. Now again seems same story with S4 all over again.
I think the main reason for all this is the ridiculous obsession with thinness, corning clearly seemed to have dropped the ball. Or is it samsung who doesnt care about it anymore?
Samsung did not drop the ball. There are just as many posts in the HTC One forums of people cracking screens. Even the Iphone 5 and 4s have widespread reports of cracked screens.
When you mix a thin device with ultra thin edge to edge glass, you really can't expect it to survive every impact.
Glass isn't diamond, nor are Sapphire screens indestructible, as thin as they are made if you hit them in the right spot they will crack.
It is the price we pay for having sleek devices. Quit your whining.

What I think is that gorilla glass 2 and 3 are really stronger, but those manufacturers take the advantage of it,
maintaining a level of sturdiness (which seems very low?) but keep making the glass thinner, which could make the phone slimmer.
The S3 has a curved glass which sticks out of the bezel of the phone, which I think is the reason of why S3 is weaker than S2.
but S4...
It's hard to say how much of it is the glass itself and how much is the rest of the phone design. My S1 has been a tank for sure (at least half a dozen hard drops) but the plastic bezel around the glass is so much thicker than on the new phones.
I'm being careful but I doubt a bare S4 would survive hard drops so I got a clear rubbery case for it. Funny thing is when I look at the two phones the case brings the S4 to about the same thickness, and also adds about the same 'buffer zone' around the glass. Check it out here: http://imgur.com/a/YPCPn#1
I'm trying not to test it (the softer plastic of the case is also grippier which is nice) but hopefully the S4 with the case is just as tough or tougher than the S1.
I guess one could see the push to thinner more fragile phones as an offered choice, you can have a smaller 8mm thick phone that is fragile or a bigger ~10mm thick unit that should be tougher. I'm really liking the weight and feel of the S4 with the case, while whenever I tried a case on the thicker S1 it made it feel like a clunky brick.
You need to know that the strengthen of GG isn't its shatter resistance but its scratch resistance.
This is why Corning always recommend manufacturer to put a rim around the display to avoid the screen from shatter even if it drops on the screen.
This is what Samsung did in the S1 and S2 but didn't in the S3. In the S4 there is a rim around the display but not on the corners, so when it falls on the top corners the display cracks. That's it.
Anyway, get a case and you'll see that it'll survive many drops
Of course the S1 & S2 has a smaller screen so its less prone to crack than the bigger screens (S3, S4). Thought this was common sense.

Fine, someone pointed that out.
The SGS1 & 2 had smaller screens, larger bezel to display ratio and are lighter. Of course they are sturdier.
Yeah unfortunately this just seems to be the way it is. Manufacturers are making glass stronger but then using that to make devices thinner. As mentioned the S4 is particularly weak because of the screen's sheer size and minimal bezel to protect it.

Galaxy nexus is pretty sturdy as well.....
IPhone 4/4S were very fragile despite the small screen.

The curve screen seems to benefit it. I know there some scienctific explaination but im terrible at explaining.
The iPhone 4 & 4S front is all glass, so it breaks easier.

Its not Samsung specific, if you look they are pretty much coating the phones.
They are making the phones thinner, the screens are thinner and bigger so more brittle. I think unless they can use a new material that has a far higher strength we are going to see more and more of this or make the phone thicker?
I think that people think gorilla glass is alot stronger then it is. For sure its stronger then most glass but at the end of the day its still glass and it will crack and shatter
Dragon Trail glass ftw.

It's all about the angle of impact and how the energy from the impact spreading doing whatever damage it does on the way.
However as mentioned by some others - more glass there is more chance of a damage - as you can use your phone if the plastic/metal bits are damaged on the outside - however if the screen does get damaged, being touch screen you are more or less screwed as the 'keyboard' would also be unusable.
Hey guys, just for the record. I've already found a few microscopic scratches on my supposedly indestructible gorilla glass 3. When I see all those scratching the screen with a knife videos on YouTube I really don't understand how people get away with it without having scratched the screen. I always keep my phone in my left jeans pocket with the screen facing the leg. I also never put it screen down on anything whatsoever plus I'm very careful with the screen just because I hate screen protectors. So I really don't understand where these scratches come from. I mean they're so small that you can barely see them with your naked eye. But nevertheless they're there. My 3 year old galaxy s1 which I treated like a ***** for the best part of the last year doesn't have any scratches whatsoever. Just saying

gorilla glass has never been indestructible. and it is probably silica that is scratching your screen. that, or you've mistaken your oleophobic coating to have scratches and just need to wipe it properly.
Sorry but silica are you referring to? I was hoping it would be smears but you really can't wipe it away... unfortunately
Sand.

Hi there, people,
This is the first high end smarthphone I have ever owned and I am quite at loss with the case selecting issue. On one hand, the device looks awesome without any case, and it's been marketed as "no need for a case". On the other, I would absolutely hate discovering a scratch in my brand new Z5 Compact, at least while the device is less than a year old.
So, I ask the following question to the community: Which case (brand) have you been using with your Z5C (or other high end phones)? "No case" is also an answer, if you've been using a S6E without case since launch, I would love to know, as I wouldn't expect the Z5C to endure less.
I wouldn't mind paying premium for a premium case, in fact, my goto option would be the official Sony case, but in this particular case, I happen to find it hideous.
Thanks!!
PS: Any comments about the screen protectors would be welcomed, tempered crystal, plastic... I always suspected that it was a scam.
Tempered glass protections aren't a scam. They don't protect a lot better from scratches than plastic in MOST situations, but there can be that one time were an extra sharp thing goes through the plastic pretty much instantaneously and leaves your screen with a nasty scratch. Glass screen protectors also stick better in my opinion, leave no bubbles, and feel a lot better to the touch. You don't even need an expensive one, I bought two for 5$ on ebay, from a brand I never heard of and they're great. If you pay more, the fit will be better, it can be thinner, etc, but any is better than none. Plus, where the plastic protector scratches easily, the glass one will stay pristine a lot longer. You should try a cheap one to see the added comfort they add and decide from that.
Regarding cases, depends on what you want. There are other threads (1, 2) where you can see if there's anything you like. Also, since the phone just came out, there's not a lot of choice out there, most are chinese brands and rebrands of the same thing. You can always get one that protects and is cheap and get a better one once there's more variety. I have been using this one, it's not great, I like a bit more protection but it does a better job than going nude while I wait for a better choice.
Yeah, like NPK06 said, the tempered* glass screen protectors aren't a scam.
There's pretty much two types of screen protectors for phones. Plastic (PET film) or glass.
With a plastic one you tend to lose the slick feel of the glass and depending on the quality it could affect the clarity or colors and so on.
Plastic protectors also scratch relatively easily and the application is horrid as it's not a rigid object you're trying to lower on the phone.
Glass protectors are made from, glass, doh. Same stuff as there is on your phone. No loss in feel or clarity and so on.
Typically 0.2-0.4mm in thickness, tempered, oleophobic coating (literally "fear of oil") which resists finger prints and makes the glass easy to clean, nowadays they've got rounded edges as well. And high surface hardness (8-9H) so they're tough to scratch.
Easy application. All you need to make sure is to just line it up carefully. They adhere themselves pretty amazingly. Sometimes it starts automagically from one of edge of the protector and sometimes you need to press on the center of the glass to start the process.
Heres couple of examples
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nle4XIrtBRw&t=16s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8H5p4d3UhEk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpJv8tO5Am4
It really is as simple as that. Clean, wipe, align, lower it down. Voila. Easy even for me with my big fingers
A tempered glass screen protector really is a nice thing to have. In case you drop the phone, the protector could take the front of the blow.
So instead of cracking the glass of your phone, only the screen protector would crack.
With my One M7, it once dropped. The phone bumped against a round metal object.
Point of impact was at the long side edge of phone at 45 degrees so not directly at/parallel to the screen or not directly at the side of the phone. The edge of the screen protector took the force of the impact, tiny section of the edge crumbled into small little not-sharp-pieces and then started a hair line fracture from the point of impact.
The glass of the phone was unaffected. That's pretty remarkable considering the glass on the M7 is from edge to edge.
I can not recommend these glass screen protectors enough! They're hell of a lot cheaper than having to repair a cracked screen!
And there are also tempered glass protectors for backs, eg. for Xperia Z phones.
StilGut is one of the brands that offers front and back tempered glass protectors for Z5 series.
You can find them from Amazon and so on, or from their home page. If you are in Europe ordering from their home page is better, the front+back protector is 19.99€ + shipping inside EU 4.5€. And apparently you can get a 5€ promo code if you sign up for their newsletter.
On Amazon it was 20$.
Disclaimer though, I have never personally used StilGut products myself, I just came aware of their products on the Z5 accessories forum by another user. Just letting you know they exist and the price point.
* Tempered (or toughened) glass basically means that the glass has gone through a thermal or chemical process to increase it's strength.
The surface of the glass is in compression and the inside of the glass is in tension. If the glass breaks, instead of splintering into jagged shards, toughened glass breaks into small granular chunks.
Thank you both for your kind replies. I finally got into the shotgun solution: bought several cases with the hope that one of them fulfil my needs and the Stilgut screen protector. I might post some reviews after some testing, specially for the Stilgut, after I have tested its oleophobicness.
If GSM Arena is to be believed, then the screen on the Honor 8 has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, the same as my old Galaxy S5, which got tons of micro scratches and a couple of big ones until I put on a screen protector. The screen on the H8 feels much smoother than the the S5. I like the super smooth feel of the H8 screen and that it doesn't get smudged up very easily and is easy to wipe off when it does. So, screen protector or not? Help me decide.
Dropped it one time with a screen protector and it cracked
I always use one. It's a personality taste thing. Although I feel that the screen is definitely durable enough, stuff happens.
Most of the feedback I've seen on here is that the screen scratches incredibly easily. I have a Nilikin tempered glass protector on. While it doesn't fit perfectly because of the curved edges, it doesn't bother me at all and I prefer the protection.
Just a comment on feel and use of the phone without the screen protector.
I couldn't stand the feel of my finger catching on the sharp edge of the supplied/installed screen protector but I love this phone so much I didn't want to risk scratching the screen.
Finally I couldn't stand it any longer and had to remove the protector....what a difference. The phone feels way more premium and the finger print coating seems very good. It does seem to be a bit sharper and bright as the protector is a film and not tempered glass. I have to admit that the Mate 20 X has one of the better supplied protectors but wow, what a difference without it.
So glad I removed it and to everyone else out there, who has removed the film and are still using the Mate 20 X without a protector?

I removed the protector when I bought my previous phone, a OnePlus 6, and the next day had scratches on the screen. After that I'll never go naked on the screen again. Am I the only one who hates tempered glass screen protectors?
I was nice for 10 minutes only. While putting on my tempered glass. I just can't go without, have to have a case too.
First thing i always do is to remove the screenprotoctor if applied. I don`t like the feel and never had a scratch on any phone so far.
I removed the screen protector from my P20 Pro and kept using it for months without any scratches. But on the Mate 20 X I removed the protector last week and now I have two big scratches. Maybe because the phone is larger so it is more prone for scratches.
I just gotten a mate 20 x, still with factory film, would like to ask, how does it actually affect the screen quality with and without it? Reason being I feel like there is visible "pixels" or fonts looking a bit jaggedly as compared on my other devices, I'm not sure if its due to the lower PPI (FHD on a 7.2 screen) or because of the factory film..
I compared it with a similar PPI device (8.4 inch 2k OLED display, 358ppi vs mate 20x 7.2 inch FHD 346ppi AMOLED) and the 8.4 inch device seems to look better and "higher quality" when looking at the fonts
First thing i always do when i have a new phone with screen protoctor is removing it and then install a good piece of Nilkin glass protection.
I never had a phone without this and without a flip cover to... And i never will.

Ok just removed my plastic protector, took a look at the screen without anything on then pasted on a nillkin glass.. it does look a tad clearer, but pixels are still somewhat visible, i guess its not the plastic or glass issue, it simply is due to the low PPI count, probably just not used it to (coming from the 6.6 inch honor note 8 with 443 ppi amoled), but overall its still a really good screen
But at least now it is protected by another physical piece of glass and is much smoother, can definitely say that nillkin glass and coating is good, fits and blends in well with the provided TPU case
I didn't dare to remove the stock protector yet.
But: did anybody have a chance to compare using the M-Pen on phone WITH and WITHOUT the original screen protector?
And how the M-PEN works if 3rd party tempered glass is used?

You mean even the M-Pen works fine with the PanzerGlass?
Is it able to detect all the 4096 levels of pressure? You don't have to press harder if you want to draw a thick line?
And one more question: I'm considering removal of the stock screen protector and leaving the display without any protection (because the phone is permanently in flip case). And the question is: wouldn't the usage of M-Pen lead to scratches eventually?
I recently removed the stock screen protector and wow what a difference the screen is silky smooth and feels much better.
I did try to apply a glass protector but both times came out wrong with bubbles in the center so I have decided to go naked with the original kickstand case

Yes it works perfect with the panzerglass as i have right now.

"And the question is: wouldn't the usage of M-Pen lead to scratches eventually" this i dont have any experience with. But saw in here some days ago a guy telling about this and when he hold the phone in a special angle he could see some small scratches on the display.
The pen is more hard in the end vs the Sammy pen what i remember.

I agree. What a difference.
I used to remove the pre-installed screen protectors on my previous phones, but I too, was a bit scared of ruining this massive 7.2" screen when I first got it.
This is bigger than the previous phones, and this was certainly more expensive than the previous phones.
If you are careful with your phones, I would say you should be fine from all these unwanted scratches.
Some people are so careless, they even put their keys in the same pocket as their phones, and they complain about their phones getting damaged.
For the person saying the M-pen is scratch your screen protector, please remember that this pre-installed screen protector is still only plastic. the tip of the M-Pen is plastic. it IS going to scratch.
Lastly, the number one thing ANY of these screen protectors CANNOT beat, whether it be a film, or tempered glass screen protector, is the oleophobic coating these phones now come with. It was great a few years back, it is even better today.
Minimal fingerprints, and the fingertip gliding feel is unmatched.
I think people should keep some sort of screen protector - either the pre-installed film which IMHO is very good, or a 3rd party film or a tempered glass. Most tempered glass products nowadays are very good and protect the actual screen from scratches. And feels premium too. My AmazingThing tempered glass - so called Supreme Glass, feels nice finger glides smoothly and feel cool to touch too.
I'm sure many boast that they never had scratches after long time of use, but I am sure the scratch marks WILL be there when looked carefully.
Protecting an expensive device is a logical decision.
But sure, to each their own.
Had my factory protector on for the first 4 months or so, then removed it, and it has been 2 months without any screen protector.
The screen feels and looks better.
On hindsight I might have removed it on day 1.
The problem remains that the touch sensing is just laggy, jerky, and glitchy. No difference with or without protector.
Do scrolling tests beside an iPhone to see the difference.
I generally keep my phone's bare, without cases or screen protector. I had two Pixel 6 pros before. Both developed micro scratches and defects in oleophobic coating within a week of use. I haven't babied the pixel 7 pro by any means and there is absolutely no scratches or defects in the coating. I'm very happy that Google finally addressed this. Anyone else notice an improvement in the material quality of the screen. ?
Lol
Haven't used a bare phone since the ORIGINAL Samsung Galaxy S!!!
My devices always wear case's... Sometimes screen protectors.
My Pixel 7 Pro had a screen protector being applied to it within 15 seconds of coming out of its box, it wasn't even turned on. Gorilla Glass Victus is well known for being great in terms of shatter resistance on drops, but is hopeless when it comes to scratches.
Phones too slippery not to have at least a thin case on for my liking, i do appreciate people like yourself who still raw dog that **** bareback. But yeah my screen has no protector on and its scratch free, i work on a building site also.
I started with case with my samsung Note 9 and have been using them ever since. I think that's when I started with the screen protectors too. I am partial to the matte ones because of how it reduces glare and hides fingerprints well.

The scratches I'm talking about wouldn't go deep enough to reach the glass. They're entirely in the coating.
I had to take the screen protector OFF of the Pixel 6 because of the poor fingerprint reader. It developed quite a few minor scratches. I'm definitely not leaving the Pixel 7 Pro naked since now the Pixel 7 Pro has no more fingerprint issues.

For all intents and purposes, it makes no difference whether it's on the coating or the glass. You can't get rid of them.
I have a love hate relationship with screen protectors which tend to make me use the phones naked. The glass screen protectors all manage to develop big bubbles in the top right corner after a month or so because my face is oily. I guess a little bit collects on the edge and lifts it up a bit or something. The plastic films tend to be a better in this regard but look cheap. Always have issue with the finger prints when a protector in on as well. Do any decent screen protectors exit for curved screens like the P7P?
I think we'll have to wait another few weeks to determine if this is really the case. I think that the stock oleophobic coating might just be a little longer lasting this time around. But we'll have to wait and see.
But also, I am kinda babying my P7P after I had noticed said surface micro scratches on my P6P shortly after my initial unboxing.
Side note, but I'm like you and keep my phones naked - so this stuff is important to me.

I cannot imagine the rationale behind making phones slippery, especially these huge phones that cannot be easily held and used by a person with an average hand size.
I enjoy the build quality of this phone and also think the coating is good. I generally use a case and find the aluminum camera bar looks kind of cool in the case cut out. I don't do screen protectors and have generally been ok over the years, even with drops .
The P7's & P6's have been extremely slippery with the whole shiny glass but it's funny that when the Pixel 4 XL had the matted back & painted side rails it was the best feel & grip to me yet reviewers complained that it wasn't premium because it wasn't shiny like the iphones of that year. Now the same reviews are saying too many fingerprints & how the phone should be matte like the iPhone this year
I'm just happy that Google is trying to walk their own path this year and I hope they continue that.
Yes, slippery phones is an unfortunate trend.
That's really the problem with phones these days, right? Someone big (ahem Apple, Samsung) starts a trend, be it good or bad, and everyone follows it. The physical form of the smart phone has become stagnant. They all look and feel the same.
I'd take frosted glass or polycarbonate back on a premium phone if they made it, but no company has the balls to do that now
I'm enjoying my Note 20 Ultra for over 2 years now, no screen protector, zero scratches, none. I hope my already ordered p7p is equally scratch resistant...

I get the cheapest ones available - hydrogen film tpu - and it works pretty well except at the curved areas where the film tends to raise up and dust will start to collect. For my next film replacement, I will trim off 10mm from the left/right sides so that the film will just stay flat.

I have a protector on my phone which came with a £7 transparent cover I bought on Amazon UK, so pretty much the cheapest you can get. I put it on the minute I took the phone out the box nearly two weeks ago, expecting it to be temporary just to protect the screen until I got a decent one. But and it went on perfectly and there has been no raising on the edges near the curve. It actually looks and feels like the protectors that come on phones like Samsung. I'm not going to bother with another. And to make things even better the case came with two of them, so when this ends up too marked, I'll put the other one on.
