hi.
I'm looking to upgrade to the S8 from the S3 but I have some questions as to which direction to take.
I'm on a SERO plan that I don't want to lose(mainly because I get true unlimited data...so they say.), which is the main reason I stayed with sprint for so long.
Currently my S3 is rooted with Cyanogenmod. My phone sucks right now, but the only things that I still like about it is the hotspot and the privacy guard feature, which is like a permissions manager.
I like the S8, and along with all the other great new features of the phone I would like to have those 2 aforementioned features. And last but not least, I'd like it unlocked, in the event I want to leave sprint(which is a big possibility)
So my questions are as such:
1- I was thinking about buying an unlocked Sprint S8 from swappa because it's cheaper than Sprint. Is this wise?
2- I've heard about using 'package disabler pro' to get hotspot functionality. Is there a better way?
3- I think i may be able to find a "permissions manager" app in the play store, but does anyone have any suggestions?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
anybody?

I just wondered if anyone had the Verizon version, what it was like? Did they overdue it with bkoatware and has anyone tried to root it yet?
I do. No root.

It's pretty much the same bloatware as any Verizon released Samsung device. There is no root yet.
No root same Bloat as all vzw and Samsung device except now Facebook is not able to be uninistalled it's a system app now
OK thanks for the info. Is anyone having any issues with it? I was trying to wait for the nexus 6 but I got a glimpse of the edge and it really got my attention so I'm going to verizon tomorrow to get one if its in stock.
If you're wanting something to root I would honestly steer you towards the Nexus. It doesn't look like a root for our version will be coming out anytime soon, if at all. I love it like it is for sure though and it is a tough battle if you just want a solid phone.

I got the phone at launch and haven't had any issues with it so far. I had a nexus 6 that I purchased from T-Mobile and was using it on Verizon for a while. I returned it within the return window. Battery life was horrendous, random app crashes, it took a couple of minutes to pick up signal, no multitasking, and no simultaneous voice and data. I'm sure the simultaneous voice and data will be on the Verizon edition since they can push Advanced Calling 1.0 to it. I'm in no way trying to say that you should get the Edge over the Nexus. Just sharing my experience with both phones.

yes, advanced calling does have simultaneous voice/data with advanced calling built in. sucky thing is that if you don't elect for the advanced calling 1.0, you can't use the simultaneous voice/data, despite having that feature on the note 4. i've been through hell recently because advanced calling doesn't work with verizon's caller id app, but in order to have simultaneous voice/data, you HAVE to have the advanced/HD calling. went round and round with tech support about this for an entire day, only to have to factory reset and i'm still in the process of getting things backed up/restored AGAIN. barely had the phone for 4 days, at one point i couldn't even dial out because so many people had messed with my account and reset network settings... but anyways. lesson learned-- the HD calling is free. take advantage of it, and utilize a third party caller id app. (recommendations welcome, btw)
Don't forget the Dev edition is coming as well, if you're buying off contract.
Thanks for the info. I just got it yesterday and so far I'm loving it. I love the multiwindows. It's much better since my S3. I'm sure root will come along sometime. I'd really like to have the mod for using the earpiece as an extra speaker
I picked mine up yesterday on edge.. Ended up adding another line and doing a SIM card swap in order to keep my unlimited data. Now I have an extra phone lol with one gigabyte of data on it. Basically sharing that with my tablet as well which stays coupled to me on my wifi tether. So far I am really liking it and do not seem to need to root. Being I am on an older unlimited plan the tether of course was wanting me to pay but there is an app for that lol wifi tether working strong. As of now no need for root but would always love the option hopefully someone will come along and take this device under their wing. I am having an issue with the CNN side ticker not updating itself just showing it as loading. Everything else seems to be working rock solid and I'm loving the camera. Definitely a different phone if you're looking for something different. I was tired of the same old same old was going to get a g3 but that is basically like my s3 with better specs of course but I opted to stay with Samsung. Brighter screen and I actually kind of like some of the TouchWiz options. Does not seem to be bogged down to bed with bloatware as this thing has three gigs of ram and a super fast processor seems to sale right on through everything. Now we just need someone to start some topics under the Verizon edge section.

Picked mine up the day they released it. The sales guy told me I was the first (and only one) to pick it up all day - which was a real shame, IMO.
I love this thing. This is my first venture into the phablet world and am enjoying it.
Just waiting for root....
I'm not trying to be a downer but as it seems nobody is working on note 4 vzw root as I have one of thoes as well I don't think we will get it anytime soon if ever would love it but no exploits have been found to bypass bootloader to achieve root

I'm happy with it the way it is now but I know within a year I'll wanna root and try out different Roma if we get to that point. I'm also awfully tempted to buy the gear S

Check the AT&T Samsung Note 4 forums. There seems to be multiple people working on it. Also, just because developers are not posting in the forums, it does not mean that nobody is working on it.

Hi. I currently have the Verizon Galaxy S5 on Kit Kat 4.4.4. I'm looking to go to tmo for WiFi calling and other stuff. I'm looking at the One M9, S6, G3. I can't decide. Each has their pros and cons. And making decisions is one of the hardest things for me in my life. I know of the G4.
One thing I'm looking for is to have a darker ui. I don't like Lolipop being so white. I know each phone has themes but not sure if I like much of them. I'm planning to root to get rid of bloat apps and to maybe change the ui look if possible. Except I'm not good at rooting or I need step by step easy info on how. I have rooted before the touch pro 2 I think.
Thanks.
Are you buying outright, or are you going with the payment plan and/or trade-in-your-old-device plan?
If you're buying outright, remember that this opens you up to any unlocked GSM phone like Nexuses or the OnePlus One. No wifi calling though.
If you're going with a payment plan, of the phones you listed, the G3 will have the most custom development support. It's easily rooted, and you can flash custom ROMs like Cyanogenmod, which give you lots of theming options. You'll have to stick with the stock ROM for wifi calling though. I can't speak for stock themes with these phones. Even with the stock ROM though, the G3 will give you the most options, especially with Xposed. It won't be quite as future-proof as the S6 or M9, but it'll still be good for at least couple years before it's "obsolete" rather than simply no longer the latest and greatest.
Hi. Thanks.
I'm switching to tmo and would be paying for the phone per month and then upgrade after half of it is paid off which is when they let you. I would be trading in my S5 as well. So I'm guessing they'd pay off my contract and buy my phone for $? on the trade in.
But it's really hard to pick. I kind of think the G3 is a side grade and the others a small upgrade. Plus when I got my Verizon account last year I first got the G3 but returned it for the S5 because landscape didn't work on the G3.
I like the screen size of the G3 and resolution. Performance I'm sure is fine. But I don't like how flat they made the ui and how is all white.
I've seen some s6 themes and the avengers one seems nice and a purple one too. The space one seems ok too.
I would really like to try a rom to unbloat the phone apps. And change the ui color.
Why no WiFi calling except stock?

Wifi calling with T-Mobile uses their proprietary app, which only works on certain phones, and only with official T-Mobile firmware.
Root with the S6 is possible, but it'll void the warranty. Granted, rooting usually voids warranties, but Samsung has this "security" feature called KNOX. With the G3 you can root it and install custom recovery, but if necessary, you can revert back to stock and no-one's the wiser. With KNOX though, they'll know you've hacked the phone (if they check), and it's irreversible.
Root isn't necessary to "debloat" though. Deleting system apps is often a bad idea, and doesn't really do you any good. Disabling or "freezing" them is typically a better approach. For example, T-Mobile has this "feature" called Visual Voicemail. It sucks, it's useless, and it gives you constant notifications and reminders to update. Just disable it. Debloating system apps doesn't free up any space; your phone has a certain amount of space already partitioned for "system", and deleting apps from this partition won't free up space for games or apps or photos. Just remember to disable apps one at a time so if something goes wrong you know which app caused the problems and you can undo it.
Thanks. Debloat means less apps running right? That happens when you disable? On my S5 I've disabled several. Does that mean they are truly disabled and never running? They are hidden too and I'm not rooted.
Ok. Sounds like the G3 is the safer better way maybe especially if I plan to trade it in for an upgrade in a year right?
Then there's the One M9
Still trying to decide.

Thank you all.
So I currently use a Galaxy S5. It's rooted and I still run a KitKat ROM right now and everything works great. I have someone who will give me an iPhone 6 for my S5 + $25. I am in no way a fan of iPhones or iOS but I am kind of getting bored with my S5. There are a few people developing for it still but I just want something new to play with. I want to try out the iPhone 6 mainly for the camera. Looking on craigslist I see plenty of people with excellent condition Galaxy S6's willing to trade for an iPhone 6. So my thinking is to get the iPhone tomorrow and within a few weeks trade it for an S6.
The S5 really is the perfect phone but like I mentioned I want something new. I have unlimited data on verizon and if I ever need to have hotspot I can use that with no issues. Battery life is great and it also has the power saving modes. Also the removable memory card slot lets me put in my friends GoPro memory card and copy clips right to my phone. I will be giving up a lot so I hope the S6 is worth it.
Before I get rid of my S5 I wanted to double check a few things. I know on the S5 the latest update can't be rooted. I also saw a thread here mentioning the same thing for the S6. So I just wanted to confirm. If I get one from someone on craigslist it's likely gonna be on the newest software. Can it be rooted or can it be downgraded and then rooted? If not are there enough people still working on this phone that there's a pretty good chance it will have root again eventually?
Thanks for any answers!

If it is on the latest software no chance of root and no downgrade. If you want root, find one that either has build number G920VVRU1AOC3 or G920VVRU1AOE2. Both can be rooted. Any other build number can not be rooted and cannot be downgraded. Make sure you ask these seller what the build number is. I personally believe that sometime in the future a new root exploit will be found, but not likely any time soon.

Like was mentioned by snowby123, only OC3 and OE2 can be rooted. My only added comment is I would use swappa over Craigslist. Safe place to buy a phone and you can confirm firmware before purchase. I've bought and sold several on there.

Thank you both! Exactly what I was looking for. Just checked the S5 forum and there is two people currently testing some ideas for rooting the new build and bypassing the bootloader so I won't what will happen with that.
Are there non root hotspot apps that I will be able to get? I will try and get a rootable firmware but who knows if I'll find one. Gonna miss my S5! No going back after tonight

This is probably a dumb question but, is there anyway to get some of the benefits of a rooted phone without rooting. I have a Galaxy S7 SM-G930T with T-Mobile as my carrier and I haven't been able to find what seems like a trustworthy guide for rooting it. I've never rooted before which is why I'm hesitant. Is there any way to get some of the perks of a rooted phone without rooting it? Better yet, does anyone have a trustworthy guide for rooting this phone they could share?
I used to root my phone the moment I got it. The S7 is the first one I didn't root, because you really can get (almost) all the nice things without actually rooting the device.
The important ones for me are:
Good Lock - changes the apparence more to the stock android look. But that might not be for everyone. You can find it in the Galaxy App Store.
EZ Disabler - you can disable apps you don't want. I disabled the Gear VR App and some other ones. But be careful with what you disable.
Disconnect Pro - this one was free for a while, you can find it in the Galaxy Apps Store. It disables ads on your phone, very very helpful. I rooted my other phones to get AdAway running, but Disconnect Pro does the same job without rooting. A free alternative would be "Adhell", but I didn't try it myself.
What kind of perks are you looking for? Would help us so we can make suggestions.
For ad blocking, DNS66, AdGuard (my personal choice) or AdHell work well.
Hi all,
I have tried searching, but am a bit overwhelmed since I am new to this world. All I really want to do is take my new Sprint Galaxy S8 (bought from someone off craigslist, confirmed it is ready to be activated all clean etc.) and get plain vanilla android on it as if it were a Pixel/Nexus. It does not have to be an Oreo pre-release or anything, just whatever the most current stable build is for, ideally with OTA updates if possible?
So I need basic instructions for rooting it, along with access to whatever the best/simplest ROM is that fits my above description, and how to load that up safely with minimal maintenance (I am not sure if it updates regularly like stock does). Apologies if this is super basic and asked all the time...
I was planning to activate it with sprint after I get it all set up with the root, rom, and my own data... Would this be a problem? Sprint store rep said it should be fine though they are not technically supposed to say that of course, but is it better to activate it first then root/rom it? I'd prefer not to activate it until it is all set up with everything for me if I can
Thank you for any help!!!
