[Q] anyone have the verizon version of the edge? - Note Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just wondered if anyone had the Verizon version, what it was like? Did they overdue it with bkoatware and has anyone tried to root it yet?

I do. No root.

It's pretty much the same bloatware as any Verizon released Samsung device. There is no root yet.

No root same Bloat as all vzw and Samsung device except now Facebook is not able to be uninistalled it's a system app now

OK thanks for the info. Is anyone having any issues with it? I was trying to wait for the nexus 6 but I got a glimpse of the edge and it really got my attention so I'm going to verizon tomorrow to get one if its in stock.

If you're wanting something to root I would honestly steer you towards the Nexus. It doesn't look like a root for our version will be coming out anytime soon, if at all. I love it like it is for sure though and it is a tough battle if you just want a solid phone.

I got the phone at launch and haven't had any issues with it so far. I had a nexus 6 that I purchased from T-Mobile and was using it on Verizon for a while. I returned it within the return window. Battery life was horrendous, random app crashes, it took a couple of minutes to pick up signal, no multitasking, and no simultaneous voice and data. I'm sure the simultaneous voice and data will be on the Verizon edition since they can push Advanced Calling 1.0 to it. I'm in no way trying to say that you should get the Edge over the Nexus. Just sharing my experience with both phones.

yes, advanced calling does have simultaneous voice/data with advanced calling built in. sucky thing is that if you don't elect for the advanced calling 1.0, you can't use the simultaneous voice/data, despite having that feature on the note 4. i've been through hell recently because advanced calling doesn't work with verizon's caller id app, but in order to have simultaneous voice/data, you HAVE to have the advanced/HD calling. went round and round with tech support about this for an entire day, only to have to factory reset and i'm still in the process of getting things backed up/restored AGAIN. barely had the phone for 4 days, at one point i couldn't even dial out because so many people had messed with my account and reset network settings... but anyways. lesson learned-- the HD calling is free. take advantage of it, and utilize a third party caller id app. (recommendations welcome, btw)

Don't forget the Dev edition is coming as well, if you're buying off contract.

Thanks for the info. I just got it yesterday and so far I'm loving it. I love the multiwindows. It's much better since my S3. I'm sure root will come along sometime. I'd really like to have the mod for using the earpiece as an extra speaker

I picked mine up yesterday on edge.. Ended up adding another line and doing a SIM card swap in order to keep my unlimited data. Now I have an extra phone lol with one gigabyte of data on it. Basically sharing that with my tablet as well which stays coupled to me on my wifi tether. So far I am really liking it and do not seem to need to root. Being I am on an older unlimited plan the tether of course was wanting me to pay but there is an app for that lol wifi tether working strong. As of now no need for root but would always love the option hopefully someone will come along and take this device under their wing. I am having an issue with the CNN side ticker not updating itself just showing it as loading. Everything else seems to be working rock solid and I'm loving the camera. Definitely a different phone if you're looking for something different. I was tired of the same old same old was going to get a g3 but that is basically like my s3 with better specs of course but I opted to stay with Samsung. Brighter screen and I actually kind of like some of the TouchWiz options. Does not seem to be bogged down to bed with bloatware as this thing has three gigs of ram and a super fast processor seems to sale right on through everything. Now we just need someone to start some topics under the Verizon edge section.

Picked mine up the day they released it. The sales guy told me I was the first (and only one) to pick it up all day - which was a real shame, IMO.
I love this thing. This is my first venture into the phablet world and am enjoying it.
Just waiting for root....

I'm not trying to be a downer but as it seems nobody is working on note 4 vzw root as I have one of thoes as well I don't think we will get it anytime soon if ever would love it but no exploits have been found to bypass bootloader to achieve root

I'm happy with it the way it is now but I know within a year I'll wanna root and try out different Roma if we get to that point. I'm also awfully tempted to buy the gear S

Check the AT&T Samsung Note 4 forums. There seems to be multiple people working on it. Also, just because developers are not posting in the forums, it does not mean that nobody is working on it.

[Q] VZW SGT2 Roms?

I have a VZW SGT2 (SCH-I705). I've got it rooted and I'm quite happy with it from a hardware perspective. I'm having a problem with OTA update notification however. I get nag notifications daily and with CWM installed, I cannot perform the update unless I go back to stock.
All of the roms I'm seeing are for the various wi-fi/retail models (GT-P3xxx) However, as stated, the VZW device doesn't carry the same model numbers. It is simply the SCH-I705. My question at this point is; can any of these GT-P3xxx roms be used on the VZW device? I would love to put one of the new JB roms (Paranoid) on it, but none appear to apply to this model. If I can't use any of these roms, is there a reliable way to disable OTA updates? Thanks to the community for all the information!
Since your rooted you can dig threw system/app folder for the Fota.apk. delete that and reboot.
Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately there is no Fota.apk in system/app on my device. I looked for anything 'ota' related in the folder, nothing jumped out at me. Your reply suggests another rom isn't an option for me. I guess I should've done a little more research before pulling the trigger on this. Any other advice you can think of that may help me out of this OTA mess? Is there something I can change in build.prop? Thanks again.

Yes, using titanium you can freeze SDM.
Green icon with a phone and up arrow. Freeze or uninstall with titanium and verizon won't know what hit em.

I just got this tab from verizon for the 99$ black friday. First tablet and i am kind of up in the air about it still. Really like it so far but I too would love to run paranoid and the lack of development for this tab is the only thing that has me discouraged. As for the price though who can argue that it was a bad deal. Anyway what method did you use to root?

99 dollars is a good price till you factor into being forced to there new family share data plan (if you still use a "dumb" phone it might not be so bad) but if you've got a smart phone then your data cap has been slashed to crap and is now shared with a tablet you are forced to pay an additional 10 dollars a month for 2 years MINIMUM, what your paying in "tablet on your data plan" fees is more then the cost of the wifi only version and if you have a smart phone new enough you can wifi tether them together using Foxfi and not have to pay that additional (outrageous) fee for using tethering. I would never consider buying tablet from a cell company.
I've been with verizon since they bought the company we had our service thru like 12 years ago, and I've never had a problem with them or there service but this new ripoff data plan with our current phone setup would cost us 180 dollars a month for a measly 1 GB we have 2 smart phones that each have 4 GB of data and pay less now then what we would under the new plans, hell 3 separate phones from straight talk with unlimited EVERYTHING is only 135, i'm sorry verizon but when it's time to replace these phones we will be parting ways, because I refuse to get rapped like that.
I bought one too black friday not really sure why since I have a N7 but three quality is much better amd three performance is up to par so 99 $ well spent

This got me thinking.... you are right not worth it. I took it back and bought me a nexus 7 32gb from walmart. My sister is a pharmacist there so got it for around 224$. I like it so much better and the development is awesome. Going to root and flash paranoid on it when I get off work. Thx for the reply and knocking some sense into me

Not that I own one, but I'm curious also. I wonder, what kernal you are using and if it is the same as the p3100. If so, the 3100 method may work.

Upgrade from S3?

I have an S3 right now, that has an unlocked bootloader, and is rooted. I'm getting tired of the S3, and would like to get an upgrade. The S5 is totally locked down, so that's not an option, since I want an unlocked bootloader. From what I've read, I can unlock and root the M8, but will I be happy with the phone coming from a Samsung?

Yep, thats why I only mentioned root. I didn't know if you were aware that you could at least get root access. That would make me assume they're looking for another exploit, though. Anyways, the M8 is a great phone. Sense is a lot less cartoonish than Touchwiz in my opinion.

It's quite a change coming from TouchWiz to Sense at first, you might even at the first look of it think you made a mistake as I thought I did but I ended up loving mine after using it for an hour. First time I played a song with this phone my mind was blown and it was sold to me LOL, absolutely stunning! & if you don't like Sense you can just flash an AOSP ROM which is as far as I know, normal non themed Android. I highly expect you to like it after a bit of use though, I tried an AOSP ROM few days ago and couldn't stand the lack of double tap to wake or some of the other Sense features I had gotten used to and came to love. But yeah anyways I came from an S4 and switched because the bootloader was locked and I'm very satisfied with my M8, maybe just because my bootloader was once locked for an eternity but still, great phone and one hell of a blast!

I had a Droid Incredible 2 back in the day, and I was fine with Sense, so that shouldn't be an issue. I thought I had an upgrade available, but one if my kids must have used it. Our next upgrade isn't until Nov, so I guess I have to wait.
I just did the swap today. Not going to look back to Samsung for a while. This phone is sweet!
My girlfriend has the S5 and I have the M8. They are both great phones and there are things about the S5 I wished the M8 had but I am more than happy with my M8. I don't like the touchwiz UI. That's for sure.

I came from the S3. I do not like Samsung, but the S3 was okay. It just had a bad radio. Samsung only let US Cellular upgrade so many, and US Cellular basically decided which accounts they could afford to lose, and replaced those accounts' S3s. Mine was one they decided they could lose. And they did. Now I have an M8.
First thing you're gonna notice, it's a taller phone. The screen is not noticeably bigger, but the body is taller. The speakers, front camera, and the HTC vanity bar all add to the height. No Home button in front (this isn't a second-rate iPhone clone, LOL) and the Power button is on the TOP. Yeah, have fun with that if you don't have large hands.
Second, it's slippery. Metal comes with a price, and your phone sliding out of your hand is your price. Once you've wooed all your friends with your shiny new metal phone, put a case on it. Or at least a wrap. You WILL need a case if you want to use a FlyGrip with it. Not many do but I do, so I thought I'd point that out. I like the kickstand aspect. My M8 is standing next to my keyboard. Looks amazing on my desk. Also holding it with the FlyGrip (which should be positioned below the HTC logo, and above the bottom strip—no more Verizon 4G LTE logo!) the top button is easier to hit.
No more removable battery. You can break the connection to the battery by holding all three buttons (Volume up, volume down, and power) for 10-15 seconds. I've had to do this a few times.
The M8 can be rooted, but there are extra steps. HTC uses a feature called S-On to protect the bootloader (HBOOT). So you need to temp root (via an app called weaksauce), gain S-Off, flash a recovery, flash SuperSU, then remove weaksauce. Don't follow my instructions; instead look for the thread on it. And on top of all that HTC locks the system directory. The stock/rooted ROM takes care of that for you, but it can be an annoyance. Like you can't use AdAway because it wants to write to system, and AdAway won't mount system as r/w. One solution I have found is, install Xposed, and that mounts system as r/w. When Xposed wants to reboot, switch to AdAway and let it do its thing. It will succeed. THEN reboot. But only the stock ROM you root yourself has this problem. There's a stock rooted ROM that has this dealt with. And then there's CleanROM which I haven't tried yet, but it's basically, as I understand it, the stock/rooted ROM but with a lot of the crap taken out.
TouchWiz is... okay, "If you can't say something nice don't say anything at all." So I will just say it is not a nice OS. Sense is very elegant, but limited. BlinkFeed is cool if you like the news feed thing. I personally don't. I'd rather just go to the sites I read in my browser. I don't need a feed built into my launcher. But at this point, I actually prefer Sense to the AOSP-alike ROMs. Sense works. The AOSP-alike ROMs, at this point... don't. They have various issues that you may or may not want to live with. But I'm not knocking any developer—I am sure they are all working hard to give you the best experience. Just keep in mind that this is a 3-month old device. Right now everything is wild, wild west in terms of development. The best ROMs are Sense-based because that's what's stable. That said, we do have a GPE (Google Play Edition) port and that's what I'm running now. I opted for stock everything in the Aroma installer and it's not 100% stock (the original is made by a team called SkyDragon, and they put some of their branding in it) but for the most part it's turned my M8 into a Nexus phone. And stock Android is really cool. But it's not without its faults. For example it handed over the audio from Poweramp to a call, but when the call was done, it crashed and I needed to three-finger-salute it back to life. That's not uncommon.
I think the Galaxy S3 was more stable on the software side, but then again I did not own one until ~11 months after release. And then waited a month to get into custom ROMs. When this phone's development community gets strong, I think we'll have it real, real good.
Oh, and about the speakers, yes they are as awesome as you think, but they won't blow your mind like a car stereo or boom box. Maybe a $30 Walmart CD player. But for a phone, that's impressive. Just my opinion, but polyphonic ringtones still sound the best. Search Zedge for "8 bit" and see what comes up. I have the Game of Thrones intro rendered in MIDI for my ringtone. There are two I've heard. I'm using the good one. For my wife, I'm using a MIDI render of the Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) theme. It's really good. Sounds amazing with these speakers. But I'm old school, I think a ringtone should be a ringtone and not a part of a song. I don't think any small speakers have the range to appreciate music. But maybe I'm just a snob. I want to watch a movie on mine, and see what that is like.
Anyway, the S3 is a 2 year old phone now. If you get good signal on yours, you don't really need to trade up. It runs KitKat just fine. It's gonna get L, at least unofficially if not officially. But if you want the new shiny, in my opinion the M8 is the best Android smartphone on the market right now. The 3GB G3 might beat it, but I think that QHD screen will work against it in terms of battery life. The M8, by the way, has excellent battery life.
So..just before I pull the trigger on the m8. Would you guys say I'd be making a wise choice staying with Verizon if they'll give me the 6gb deal for coming off unlimited data. I don't need unlimited. WiFi is fine for me. It's either that deal or I jump ship and try another carrier with a nexus 5. I'm leaning towards the m8. Is there a chance that Verizon will lock it down like they did the s3? I have had the s3 since released and its unlocked and everything but my power button is wonky now. Opinions please!

Actually I think the Firewater exploit was fixed on the newer M8's...not sure but I think so? Ask around and confirm whether I'm right or wrong before you buy it though. Got that information from 2 separate places and multiple people who have brand new ones saying it's not working.

You might be right. I got my red one a week and a half ago and was able to use weaksauce and firewater. It's on the latest firmware too. I haven't updated it at all.
Edit: I'm on hboot version 3.16 which should have been what the phone came on.
So what does that mean exactly? I wouldn't be able to unlock it or root?

I had the s3 since the day it came out and loved it. I decided to switch mainly for the updated modem. It made a huge difference I went from getting on average 15 down and 10 up to averaging 35 ish down and 20 ish up it changes day to day but never goes below 25 now. Outside of metropolis il close to were I live I hit 58 down and 32 up. The pping however didn't change and it holds at 70 most days for that reason alone it was worth it for me to make the switch. Granted I live in a low population area so that makes a big difference. The buttons take a lot of getting used to. I do like the double tap to wake up it makes up for having to hit the top of the phone to wake the screen. I don't really care for the BlinkFeed myself but I have nothing go wrong with it. My battery life lasts about 12 hours but I am always on my phone if I'm not on my phone I have my hotspot on for my laptop. As for upgrading with Verizon I skipped it all together and just bought the phone outright to keep my unlimited contract. It is well worth doing in my opinion. But like I said I use my phone a lot and there has been moths that I go over 6 gigs. Over all I like the m8 a lot better than the gs3. After a week of having it you get used to the button layout....Although I still have problems trying to hit the spacebar and hitting the home button instead.

Coming from galaxy s5. Thinking of switching to m8 some questions

Had my second s5 for 10 days now and having same slow data issue/network disconnects. How is the m8 as far as can I buy one and root and unlock it even if it might be a newer firmware now? I see the development is a whole lot better here than the s5. Or I might just fix my broken s4 and go back to that. Thanks

Coming from an s5 myself, I gotta say I love the m8. No slow data or wonky disconnects. And it's easy as pie to root, if you're willing to pay for sunshine?
I came from a galaxy to the m8 and have no complaints. The m8 seems much sturdier than my galaxy. I love that the screeen doesn't go all the way to the corner, as I've had some fractures to my screen in the past from corner impacts with my galaxy. Got my phone about a month ago so I would assume it's the newest model still. I temp rooted with weaksauce, ran firewater with adb and achieved root and s-off. Some people are having problems with firewater though, in which case you have to buy sunshine for $25 and will achieve the same thing.
Hope this helps with your decision

I came from the S3. Was running CM11 and the phone still great. It was hard to give up really. I've had my M8 for a couple weeks now and I love it. Had it unlocked and s-off with Sunshine the second day. Running Sinless ROM now. Its a great phone, blazing fast and actually the camera is pretty decent. Being one a GPE ROM I thought that the Google camera was garbage but with fv5 camera is great. I would highly recommend it.

Like others have said, plan to pay $25 for SunShine. If you can S-OFF with the free tools, that's great (I was able to) but you just might have to pay. Consider that before jumping. S5 can be rooted for free with TowelRoot, then you can flash TWRP/CWM and be on your way.
The big thing about coming from any Samsung to anything else is you will automatically get better signal. Samsung goes to the dollar store for their radios/modems, and they buy refurbished to boot. (Not literally, but it seems like it.) I came from the S3 on a different carrier. Night. And. Day. I went from having to put my phone in the kitchen windowsill to make or receive calls. Now I can make or receive calls in bed. Part of that is Verizon's network, as opposed to the other one... but Samsung radio quality (or rather the lack thereof) is well documented. The S5 is newer, but the S3 was widely considered the best smartphone of all time for a good little while there.
To its credit, the S3 seemed to have better ROM compatibility. Except when it didn't. Most of the time it was just fine running AOSP-based firmware. Then it would act up. "Cannot connect to camera." Reboot. Get a few more pictures, then it happens again. Reboot. And it would always do it at birthday parties when I really needed a dependable camera. But for the most part it was golden. The One M8? Just doesn't feel right using anything but Sense. I don't use Blinkfeed and I think I'm about to replace their locker with WidgetLocker, and I wish I could replace their quick settings toggles (I really just want flashlight and screen off in there), but the ROM itself (well, CleanROM) is rock solid. It's no longer like, "My phone is okay, but _____," it's more like, "I have the best smartphone on the market."
Have you ever seen an ad for a smartphone, looked at yours and said, "Gee, I wish I had THAT phone?" Or maybe not an ad, maybe a spy show, something like 24? When the latest season of 24 started, I had my Galaxy S3, and they're up there rocking Galaxy S5, iPhone 5S, and I forget what else... I think it was a Windows Phone 8.1 model... and it's like, "Okay, my phone's 2 years old, of course the spies on 24 have better phones." But then I got my One M8, and it's like, "Wow... I have a better phone than Chloe O'Brian, or any of the CIA/Secret Service people... Nobody on this show has a better phone than I do." It's a good feeling, to see someone rocking an awesome phone on TV, and to be able to think, "Mine's better." Or maybe it's just me. And I'm usually not like that.

Came from the S3. It was a great phone but after switching to the M8 don't miss my S3 or Sammy and their locked down crap anymore.

Questions about root before trading phones! Please help

So I currently use a Galaxy S5. It's rooted and I still run a KitKat ROM right now and everything works great. I have someone who will give me an iPhone 6 for my S5 + $25. I am in no way a fan of iPhones or iOS but I am kind of getting bored with my S5. There are a few people developing for it still but I just want something new to play with. I want to try out the iPhone 6 mainly for the camera. Looking on craigslist I see plenty of people with excellent condition Galaxy S6's willing to trade for an iPhone 6. So my thinking is to get the iPhone tomorrow and within a few weeks trade it for an S6.
The S5 really is the perfect phone but like I mentioned I want something new. I have unlimited data on verizon and if I ever need to have hotspot I can use that with no issues. Battery life is great and it also has the power saving modes. Also the removable memory card slot lets me put in my friends GoPro memory card and copy clips right to my phone. I will be giving up a lot so I hope the S6 is worth it.
Before I get rid of my S5 I wanted to double check a few things. I know on the S5 the latest update can't be rooted. I also saw a thread here mentioning the same thing for the S6. So I just wanted to confirm. If I get one from someone on craigslist it's likely gonna be on the newest software. Can it be rooted or can it be downgraded and then rooted? If not are there enough people still working on this phone that there's a pretty good chance it will have root again eventually?
Thanks for any answers!

If it is on the latest software no chance of root and no downgrade. If you want root, find one that either has build number G920VVRU1AOC3 or G920VVRU1AOE2. Both can be rooted. Any other build number can not be rooted and cannot be downgraded. Make sure you ask these seller what the build number is. I personally believe that sometime in the future a new root exploit will be found, but not likely any time soon.

Like was mentioned by snowby123, only OC3 and OE2 can be rooted. My only added comment is I would use swappa over Craigslist. Safe place to buy a phone and you can confirm firmware before purchase. I've bought and sold several on there.

Thank you both! Exactly what I was looking for. Just checked the S5 forum and there is two people currently testing some ideas for rooting the new build and bypassing the bootloader so I won't what will happen with that.
Are there non root hotspot apps that I will be able to get? I will try and get a rootable firmware but who knows if I'll find one. Gonna miss my S5! No going back after tonight

S7 bootloader unlock petition

Anybody interested in the bootloader and unlocking it I encourage you to sign this petition. These phones are ours to use how we see fit and the more noise we make the better our chances are. I bought this phone under the assumption that nothing had changed and for Samsung to change their policies without notice isn't acceptable for me and hopefully you as well. Thank you

Dude, there's honestly no point. Ive been on xda for about 10 years and ive always need to root every single android phone ive owned. Until recently, Samsung started making pretty good android phones starting with the s6 and up. I had no reason to root my s6, note 5, and now no reason to root my s7 edge. Im not saying you should have no need to root yours, i just feel like Samsung and android have come a long way and nowadays rooting serves no purpose;for me at least. Is rooting worth losing Samsung pay or any other security features we need to protect us? Not really. Also, Samsung can change their policies as they please, you still bought their phone. Rooting died a couple years ago, move on. Best of luck with your petition.
No point is simply just not true. I haven't even looked at a Samsung until the S6 last year and I got the M9 instead. Now with HTC dumping boomsound on the M10 I switched after 8 HTC phones. While I agree Samsung has come a long way not only in hardware but software and you can do more things now without root I still miss it a lot. Have this phone a week now, not having root sucks. It's just not the same. While yes you can do quite a bit without it, there is still plenty missing. People saying that root is dead or they don't need it is just denial for the fact that things have got so locked down it's not worth justifying the hassle which might just be true.
Let's say knox was never developed, triangle away still worked so you could also go back to stock and you could flash away with an unlocked bootloader everyone would be singing a totally different tune and you guys would be rooted. Now that Samsung has total control, we have to justify it to ourselves on why it makes sense not to root which frankly right now I think is the case.

Its all good if you have no interest then that's fine but I for one do. I hate touchjiz and the bloatware that is just the tip of the iceberg. Rooting will never die maybe some people don't but most that have rooted will always want it. Thanks for your input though. Without root we really don't have any need for a development section so this forum will likely die. I'm jumping ship to the lg g5 until samsung does something if they ever do.

I personally have no problem with Samsung locking things down. In fact for the general pop it will be great, but since we live in the free world it Samsung should still allow the option of choice. As long as they have the proper disclaimer in place that warns of consequences the one can make the decision. I think the big reason for the locked bootloader has to do with carriers leasing the phones. Since rooting breaks the pay app and can't reversed. Just imagine if you got a previous leased phone and the pay app doesn't work. What samsung should do is allow for a complete reset factory action including knox. Maybe not have it available to the general public but maybe the carriers or somewhere higher up. This would give the best of both worlds.

Dude you've been here 5 years. I've been here 7. Neither of which matters. Rooting didn't die any more than rock and roll did when disco came along.
I drive a semi and without root I can't get the headphone, or bluetooth, volumes high enough when running through the trucks stereo. And before you start talking about headphones, those that cover both ears are illegal and i don't like listening through only one ear. So I want root. If you don't that's wonderful for you, but please don't step onto a developers board, claim seniority you just don't have, and try to tell people the board has become meaningless.

This is my second account ive definitely been here since the palm and original HTC touch days with Windows pocket lol. But to the point, rooting is dead per se, but there's definitely less of a reason to do so these days. Touch wiz is damn near perfect. Even for those thay dont like it can slap a launcher on it. I see no purpose to root, i can block ads with ad guard. Also stock android doesnt have all the bells and whistles either so id rsther stay stock. Again, i know others may need it, but i was simply saying its pointless thess days. I still come here for many other things, just not to root.

Are not 'needed' and 'pointless' antonyms? You just refuted your own statement.
And I don't use stock android. I use rooted and modded versions of Sprint's base ROM. The only stock versions I have truly liked and used are by Temesek, and those tend to be few and far between on Sprint variants.
I also never use Touchwiz. It's been NovaLauncher for years now for me. And I just prefer all the little conveniences and tweaks that you can make with root. Like an extended power menu without having to add more apps from Google Play. And several diagnostic tools I use to troubleshoot when I have a weak or slow signal where I shouldn't.
So I'm really happy that your content to live with what Samsung and Sprint deign to allow you, I'm not. And since these boards seem to be doing just fine, I would guess that there are enough people who agree with me to make your opinion not nearly as wide spread as you believe it to be.
And one final question, if you believe rooting is pointless and dead, why are you still on these boards?

Root or not to root is a matter of opinion, I think it is far from dead or useless imo.
I have rooted every phone I have ever had that it was capable on within 24 hours of getting the phone just because I want to put on the phone what I want not what Samsung thinks I want.
I don't fit well with the masses and rooting let's me be that way with my phone....
That said this has been seen before on other devices and has been worked around by the amazing devs on this sight.

Rooting will never die unless the manufacturers kill it. It has too much of a following with people that love to root and need to root. So yes no root is a huge deal for me I'm coming from a Nexus 6 where I had multirom and weekly updates. The phone never gets boring when it is unleashed and rootable. I have had the Edge for about a week and I'm already bored/frustrated with it. I'm going to the Sprint store today to try and return it. My Nexus 6 flies compared to the S7 Edge even though its specs are way better. Hardware can only get you so far the software is what makes the phone fly. The stock S7 Edge has so much BS bloatware and unneeded stuff that slows it down significantly. Give me the international one and maybe I would keep it. Also, the Samsung pay is a joke for me because it doesn't support any of my banks or cards. I will be preordering the LG G5 or waiting for the next Nexus.
We should have the option.
I don't really need to root today, because I primarily use the phone for business and I don't want to have it down because I change my mind on which ROM to pick every 6 hours.
But I want the option to get rid of the ****, yes, ****, they put on this phone. Why they load junk I can't get rid of is beyond me.
If we can't control the phone, I'll have to jump off the Samsung bandwagon next year...no matter how good they make it.

So I've had this thought about this locked bootloader problem. I am not sure if this is a viable solution or whether it would even work. I was thinking that our European brethren has an unlocked bootloader. Would there be a way to Odin their bootloader on our devicesor would the fact that they have a different processor be a problem. Because in theory if we had a Samsung sign Odin file of with an unlocked bootloader we should be able to Odin and have a unlocked bootloader, no? Or is there more to it than that?

Good question. But no, it would not work. Not even because it's a different processor, which that is part. But say if T Mobile got an unlocked bootloader, it would not work for Sprint. Nor would it necessarily help to know how it happened and use it as a road map to unlock another carrier's bl.

I would suggest waiting to see if the bootloader is locked down on the lg g5 before ordering. I was not planning to root my s7e, but I must say I was curious to see what this powerhouse was capable of if unleashed from touchwiz, sadly I will never know.:crying:
Anyone else receive an OTA update this morning from Sprint? Took about 15 minutes to download and install.
I'm now showing software version G935PVPU2APC5.

I have a sneaky suspicion that the Sprint S7 & S7 Edge will end up just like the
ATT Note 5 and S6 Edge/Edge+ phones and will NEVER have root. LOL
I would strongly advice & suggest NOT to get rid of your current rooted phones at least not yet!!!
(unless you buy a different brand which can be rooted)
Have a great day!

I have the firmware for the Chinese model s7 edge it is the closest match to ours and the firmware will not load in odin. It checks against the model and csc codes so we couldn't even cross flash with t-mobiles firmware. I have the bootloader posted over in t-mobile forums and a few people are poking around to see what can be done. Unfortunately bootloader and hardware hacks are nothing I have ever done before.
