After my Moto E2 went dead a few months back, I have been looking for a replacement device and had been using a refurbished Redmi 1 which I sold and got a restored Moto G (1st gen). It was one of the device I've wanted to own since 2014 but never could due to availability. Anyways, I was able to grab a fully restored Moto G. It's refurbished to be like new and does not even have a single sign of usage and wear. Now, coming to my questions.
1. My device came with Android 5.1.1 with January 2016 security patch. The device seems to be getting slow with app updates and newer apps. Should I downgrade to KitKat instead (https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=385035244224385836), I do know how to do it without bricking. Is the device faster on KitKat as compared to Lollipop?
2. Kitkat v/s Lollipop, which has better battery life?
you might see bit of an improvement both in performance and battery life with kitkat. however dont expect miracles, newer apps are increasing hogging system resources irrespective of android version, and with so less memory on motoG they really slow the phone. my suggestion is to only have lightweight apps installed.

Apologies if this question has been raised before, it probably has. I've read up on some of the popular roms and I haven't found much obvious discussion on the responsiveness of custom ROMs compared to stock.
I've noticed that my Moto G has become really sluggish since I first bought it two years ago. I can only assume that the majority of this performance decrease is due to "updates" overloading the fixed processing and memory capacity of the hardware. It's got to the point that even my browser typically crawls along and often crashes.
I'm now looking into rooting my phone, either to downgrade or to install a custom ROM.
Could I expect to see significant performance increases from this? Where should I look to find the most efficient ROMS in this regard? When it comes to my phone I care less about features and more about responsiveness.
Cheers.
Which firmware should I use for the Honor 6, Kitkat 4.4.4 or Lollipop 5.1? Considering stability/performance/battery life? Any recommendations for ROMs would be great too thanks!
I used to think that KitKat was more energy efficient compared to Lollipop, but that seems to not be the case. What I actually experienced was physical degradation of the battery which led me to believe that KitKat lasted longer. My battery capacity is currently somewhere around 2470 mAh, which is about 20% lower than what it once (supposedly) was.
I'd say, stick to Lollipop. After all, it's the newer version. There's a couple of UI bugs in system apps (ie. the apps which use Emui's styling) introduced with Emui 3.0 (so in some KitKat ROMs as well), mostly rather pedantic stuff that most people probably wouldn't care about.
Lollipop (and soon Marshmallow) is the way to go.
Hi Community and Falcon owners!
This are my impressions on the battery life we (I suppose) are getting from our beloved device.
Is getting worse, from update to update, or at least for me.
My falcon is 1,5year old, the first configuration i got was:
ROM: Dirty Unicorns 4.4 (KK)
Kernel: Xperience
the results were F*****g awesome
I got DT2W + pocket mode, perfect RAM management (keeping for hours and hours and hours in [perfect] background all my apps withtout ANY reload, nor browser tabs), always smooth, perfect multitasking and about 2/2.5days of battery life with just 2 cores with CPUMAX at 787, I'm not joking.
Now i have:
ROM: OrionOS 2.2 6.0.1 MM
Kernel: HurtSky Hybrid Exp 16
and with the same usage and even more hibernated apps then before (Greenify) i get a not-so-perfectly-working DT2W + pocket mode, kinda of limited RAM performances compared to the old KK configuration (and browser tabs keeps reloading after some hours of suspended device), under intense CPU and/or read/write operations the UI became a lilttle laggy and unresponsive (same thing for other 2 MM ROM I tryed), more than 5 apps can't be kept in perfect background and with a total amount of 20-24h of battery life with 2 cores at CPUMAX 998.
Since the upgrade to Lollipop, I'm really disappointed.
What is going on?

It is truth, in my experience ( start from Samsung Spica Android 1.6 to moto g custom 6.0) gingerbread 2.3 is the fastest one (Motorola Defy single core 512 MB RAM), Spica have a custom ROM with below 100 MB size and our motog have custom ROM with above 350 MB size without gapps. Facility, functions, file size etc are increasing with Android versions. It need more juice from the battery, more RAM and more CPU.
512 MB RAM Defy left around 250 MB free RAM after reboot, Our moto g with 1gb ram also have the same amount of RAM available after reboot.
Application size and it's functions are also increasing from version to version. UCbrowser was 3mb in size initially when I am using, it is now around 11 MB in size.
Also your battery is getting old and it may be another reason.
Is marketing! The smartphone have to be more slow, and the battery have to decrease is power. We on xda say no to marketing rules. You can simply install the rom that you prefer!

Battery consumption is increasing on every Android version since KitKat.
Marshmallow improved battery life scenario with Doze but it still doesn't match with KK.
IMO, Lollipop was the worst Android version regarding battery life.
Moreover, you said yourself that phone is about 2.5 years old. I'm sure battery has competed it's charge and discharge cycles.

my moto g actually running orion + zero byte kernel i have everything turn off location account syc and dimmer to the lowest not on auto and i get 8 hours sot just browsing internet i have airplane on and wifi my kernel is tweak for battery life and i use mod so my phone runs cool most time better that way using less battery i try kitkat and to me it wasnt better at all the most i got was 4 hours straight on screen i like orion rom because you have moto doze included plus marshmallow doze and i use force doze and wow im impress i never played with wakelock neither all you need is good kernel and tweaks to get sot :good:
Hello,
I wanted to ask you guys if you feel too that after the last update the device has worsen his performance.
With the imminent (at the last build release date) launch of the s9 I'm starting thinking that they did this on purpose because the a8 was having to much success.
I used for nearly a month the January build A530FXXU1AQLC and then in March it arrived the last A530FXXU2ARB6.
After the ota update I restarted in recovery and cleaned the cache as usually.
Three things have worse performance after the last update:
1. Pure performance: the phone is slower in rendering. You can feel this in home, browser and keyboard response but not games; I think they downclocked some governors;
2. Screen: they changed the calibration and the level of brightness, it is not as good as before, I remember a "wow" seeing it first time, now is more a "so and so", more similar to my old note 3 colours.
3. The front camera: the front camera too has worst performance than before the last update. It was something that I thought immediatly but I couldn't prove until yesterday, when I found an old selfie that I tried to reproduce.
Every time with the new build the file was around 3,25 mb. The original selfie with the old build was 4 mb. They are almost identical.
Let me know your thoughts
After the updated, lagging everything, If i zoom a picture on facebook it's just lagging so mucch!
Yes I think so because now when install more than 10 apps its lag like 4 year old phone
I have a a8 plus , after the update the battery is going down too fast at night and some games are slow mi bootloader now is binary 2 and I cant downgrade , the phpnes are the same in hardware , only changes the battery and the screen
I Think that this should be taken to Samsung attention. The can't do that with a phone, lying to all the ones that bought it.
Its true ! I see samsung never do best on there phone !
That's a sad but, interesting theory. I think only benchmarks from new and old software would prove this theory. I owned the phone for the last two months so, I have no idea how it was performance wise in January. All I can say is that, with Oreo it is snappy and battery last a long time, in my case. I did disable a lot of bloatware, maybe it helped. It would be interesting to see how performance is affected when you install a custom kernel.
The performance is in proved noticeable
I've had android phones for eight consecutive years beginning with the Droid X; I've had my current Verizon Galaxy S7 since March 11, 2016 (the day it was released) so I know it very well. I should've just left it un-updated on the original android OS as each OS update has been worse, but 8.0 Oreo is by far the worst.
Simply put, my battery life is horrendous immediately after this update (no other changes/alterations/modifications were made.) My phone is always warm and becomes hot with minimal use. I have been monitoring the CPU and it always seems to be running well above idle (700mhz roughly.) It is this high CPU usage which I believe causes the battery to drain quickly. At best I can get 1.5hrs of screen on time (SOT), but it's usually more like 1hr. The Oreo OS also feels sluggish as well.
My phone is nearly at the point of being useless given how hot it runs, how quickly it dies and how sluggish it feels. All of this since I updated using the Verizon-pushed Oreo 8.0 update three days ago. I have seen other threads of similar issues as of recent related to the update with the typical "solutions" suggested of hard resetting the phone to factory. I'm looking for more specific input from those experiencing similar issues. Thanks
I would try to do factory reset or ... start fresh using Odin with the VZW Oreo Firmware from Sammobile.
The issue persists regardless of whether it is in safe mode or normal operation. In normal operation, even with all apps force closed, I'll still see the CPU operating at higher levels despite no apps running. This seems to be an issue with the OS itself.
