which root ready android should i buy ? - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

Hello people ,* I need a advice about a new Android i'm going to buy, the most important part is that it is root ready, is the reason that I am changing my old s6 active, i'm passionate by Google pixel 1 or 2, but I am in the United States at the time, and i'll stay more 5 days, i do not have time to buy directly from Google, the question is simple is possible to root and gain full access to Google pixel Verizon, and if not possible what cell I should seek, speaking in bestbuy or wallmart ready, I am a bit against Samsung because s6 active left me disappointed a mobile phone with so many qualities and blocked not serves to half of their real functions, but i do accept brands little known .
i am a I.T. guy , so i really need something powerfull , with good battery and screen
thanks in advance for any responses to this post .

If you're looking at bestbuy or Wal-Mart as your choices for purchasing your device, you're very limited. You'll need to do some research on which devices are bootloader unlocked and not tied down to any US carrier.
You're best bet is to wait until you're in a stable location and order online. Whether you get any of any of the Google devices or an international version of Samsung devices. It's the only way to truly know if the device will be able to be rooted.
Also, I believe this question should in the better placed in the Main forum general question area and not in a Google Pixel 2 sub forum.
Good luck.

thank you man , i am thinking of risking buying a google pixel 2 xl, online it says that it can deliver in 2 days , i am just worried about not being at hotel location when it arrives or getting a pixel 2 xl screen problem , i will not get any warranty on time , my next option is lg g6 , that for as i know its easier to find and it hand bootloader unlocked from manafacturer on demand.

hey man just getting back to you , i have choose the gl g6 us997 , i was determined to get pixel , but as soon as i got to both phone on bestbuy , i was sad about buttons place on pixel , and gl g6 was just perfect , i like to use volume buttons to shoot on games or on camera and pixel buttons are just far away from both sides and i didnt like it , thank you man for your advices

Nexus 5 or One Plus One ?

The One plus just launched 5 days back in India ( I know, its 5 months late). A friend of mine ordered the phone and it looks like an absolute peach!!
Don't get me wrong, I've turned down a swap for a new Iphone 6 with my phone, with there seems to be something about the One Plus!! I love my phone, but is the One Plus better ?
All its specs are better than the Nexus 5 on paper, but I wanna know if you guys have used them both and whats your view on it. If I sell my Nexus ( which turn 1 yr on 25 Dec), it'll get the same price as for a new One Plus, so do the economics of switching make sense?
Many Thanks

Hardware wise the OnePlus is the better one clearly, software wise (the relationship between OnePlus and Cyanogenmod is kinda cooling off) i think the Nexus 5 has the better firmware. Especialy if the Oppo software (color rom) may be implemented on the OPO in the future, though development may compensate that off course. Me personaly i prefer a phone that i can buy instead of hoping on a invite and i don`t know how complaints and defects are beeing handled by the chinese company. Check out the OnePlus One Forum here on XDA for more info.
Oneplus' warranty return process is a bit of a joke apparently. @Theshawty can attest to that. That said, he's had both and would probably say get the OPO. Not sure what it will be like for AOSP though.

I have a few friends who have invites with them, so that's not the issue. Like you pointed I am wary of how the customer service will be. Never had to use LG's service though, haven't had to send this to the shop!!
Any color on how the device is to use ? Usually the hardware specs are only 50% of the job done, phones usually pop up with small problems when using them everyday that you don't get in the instruction manual!!
Would be great to hear some guys who have used both
Stikc with da N5 bro
I own both, both are great phones but 1+ is a better phone. Stock CM11 software works like a champ. No issues. Bigger screen, great camera, very elegant big phone, 64g memory. You can also run experimental lollipop but in US/Canada everyone has a problem with VM notification, kinda works in Europe. Glitches remain. Overall - get One Plus.
Obviously between the two, the one plus one is the better buy (bang for the buck)

Ive had the OPO and decided to go back to my N5. The best thing i found about the OPO is the battery life, its an absolute beast, but i am not a fan of the software on it. I know its cyanogen mod, but theres so many bugs and glitches that it just doesn't do it for me as a daily driver. The other reason i sold it is because of the size. OPO might only seem like a tad bigger, but i hated not being able to use it with 1 hand.
Ended up selling it, going back to the N5. Not happy about the battery life, but its stable, comes from a reputable company and warranty is great. Thats another thing, if you need to RMA the product you'll fine quite the wait.

I had to make the same decision a few weeks back and decided to go with the N5, reasons:
(1) Phone size: The N5 feels better in my hand, OPO is too big (my hands are not small )
(2) OS: I wanted to go with stock Android, hence N5 easier choice, whereas you can flash stock Android also to OPO I assume
(3) OPO itself: OPO just launched and its their first phone, hence customer service etc. is not that great (you got XDA though for help), the phone itself is better than the N5 hardware wise
At the end I chose the N5 with the thought that I normally use any phone 2-3 years and I would estimate that the One Plus Two (or whatever name it will have) will launch some time end of next year/beginning of 2016, hence fits into this timeline.
btw: also thought about N6, but same issue with size (and price tag)

I'd say the OnePlus One IF (and only IF) you can get a fault free version. Their warranty return process (and the whole "support") is a joke.
It would be a side grade at best. However if you don't one hand your phone and want something bigger it might be worth the swap. More battery and more storage space (64GB version) are the advantages, the SoC is a tad faster but nothing you would notice as N5 is already as fluid as it gets.
Thanks guys, I think I'll wait for a bit and try to use my friends One Plus for a few days. But seems the general opinoin is to stick with the Nexus
I'm using OPO n it's amazing earlier used Nexus4. as many said already 5.5in may be a bit big in size but after using a day r two u'll love the display of 5.5 in.
I'm fully satisfied with OPO. Don't know guys who said OPO is too big what they say about Nexus6

Brand new note 12.2 Verizon for $200 - Is it worth it if you are addicted to ROMs?

Every Android device I've ever owned has been rooted the same day (if possible) and tinkered with. I'm addicted to installing ROMS and xposed modules and whatever new thing is out there.
I have the chance to get a brand new in box, stock Note 12.2 running KitKat. I'll update it to Lollipop if I buy it. Thing is, the device is already nearing 3 years old and I am not sure if it's worth it for a device with no root or custom ROM.
My question is:
Despite the limitations - is it still a nice device for $200. Is there sluggishness or any reason to say no? I still would like to use it with general items.
This is the best tablet I've ever owned. Screen protection is a must as I scratched mine within the first few days, but I've had it since the initial release date....Still use it daily. Great for reading books, comics, and PDF files. I take tons of notes on it at work and I use ArtFlow for digital painting.
Is this a deal for everyone, or is it specific to new accounts? I'd be tempted to get a second one and retire mine for my kids.
Thanks. Is it worth paying $200 today though? I really like how it looks, but wonder if it's past it's prime. (I'd hate to get bored of it within a day or two.)
It's only a deal for me. At my friends last job they gave everyone the devices, and he's never used it. Still in the original packing with original plastic. He booted it up once and never again.
I'd have it contract-free.
$200 may be a finite number but its value can be subjective . . You haven't noted any compelling reasons to get a Note Pro over other tablets, which makes determining value even harder. Everyone's use case is different. For me, 2 years ago when this thing came out I bought one as soon as it hit the store shelves and a couple of months in destroyed it by forgetting it on the roof of a company truck (flew off on the highway and got crushed by a semi) . . I bought another one a month or two later. Were I to lose this Note Pro today I'd certainly drop $200 down for one but if I couldn't get one for under $500 I'd probably go hog wild on an i5 256GB Surface Pro 4 instead.
Reading your original post my first thought was "Hmm is there root and custom recovery for the Verizon variant?" followed by "I wonder if there's custom ROMs for it . . " It's not like there's a ton of development for the WiFi variant let alone the carrier specific ones. I'm not saying there aren't custom ROMs or root for the 905V . . just saying you should verify before purchase.
Bought it and I love it so far. Running 4.4.2 rooted.
2 last questions:
1) I am guessing xposed won't be available since there is no recovery to flash it? Is there an alternative way? I'll check when I get home tonight.
2) All I want is to change the DPI, if I screw it up, is it just possible to boot to the normal recovery and reset the thing? I haven't tried messing around in the stock recovery yet. (Tonight!)
Thanks!
I have both the Samsung Note Pro and the SAmsung S2 Tablet. I like the S2 a lot better. The Note Pro got to a point where it's lagging and slow responses with each button press. It's also quite heavy and the GPU is weak for games like FFRK. The S2 is the best tablet so far, very fast, light, fingerprint reader, plays games like a champ.

Should I buy a Pixel?

So recently Android Pay came out in my country with a bank I use and I wanted to test it. Long story short, I can't use it because I have an unlocked bootloader.
Anyway I was thinking of upgrading to a Pixel from my Nexus 5X so I could use Android pay and so I could have a updated device. I won't miss much from having an unlocked bootloader as the only thing I used it for was installing features from the Pixel onto my device.
So I would like to ask everyone, what you think about the Pixel? Should I wait for the second generation? And is it worth the price?
I personally don't mind the design and I actually think it looks nice (most of the times I've seen it on video) and would defiantly buy a black one if I could but at the moment the Pixel hasn't been released in my country.
Current uses of my 5X:
Photography when ever I don't have my camera
Music player (with headphones)
Web browsing
Video watching
Photo storage and viewing device
Basic photo editing
VR tool
Simple games machine
My current third party apps are:
Google Cardboard
Google Cardboard Design labs
Adobe Lightroom
My Boy (GBA emulator)
Snapseed
This is just a test (My game that I suck at naming)

Kind of difficult to say whether you should or shouldn't buy the Pixel. I received mine today and set it up, but pretty much haven't had time to use it properly. I purchased blue Pixel (because all other color options weren't good in my opinion) and do like it. Device is good, build quality is also good. If you want to wait for second generation then you would probably be waiting until fall next year. If you have a device that you are happy with, then you may not need to buy Pixel. I did have Nexus 5x, but couldn't use it as device seems a little big, had some creaks from the back plastic and it did experience some lag.

My 5X lags some times when opening apps and I have the same problem with creaking around the fingerprint sensor but they don't usually bug me as the 5X is way better that the device I had before it.
I had a Sony Xperia E1 D2004 or something like that and it sucked. It broke so I switched to a Moto G 2014. I then say the beauty of Android and took a look into devices, I decided too treat myself and went on the hunt for a 6P after days of searching and being told that I wasn't going to find one, I decided to buy a 5X instead as it was on sale.

So in that case there is probably no need to buy Pixel. I had Note 5 and Galaxy S7 Edge and decided to sell them and purchase Pixel 5 inch because of it's size and for being able to put a phone in the front pockets without issues It is just a phone and any phone you buy will be the right phone for you.

But just a quick question if you could answer it. When I do eventually need to switch phone due to it breaking or something else, would you recommend a Pixel or later generations if they are as nice as this year's.
And as many people have pointed out (probably only me) "You don't realize how slow your device is until you get a good one". I noticed this when my friend got a new computer and I was so surprised at how fast it was, and I though my computer was running at 60 fps when browsing files but now I see it does have some dips. So what I'm thinking is that the Pixel may not seem as nice as it actually is when I get my hands on it.
So if you could switch back to your 5X after using the Pixel for a while and tell me if you think the upgrade was worth it.

Even if I wouldn't have my Pixel and would just have Galaxy s7 or a Note 5 and was offered to go back to Nexus 5x - I would NOT do it I agree with you that if you use a better device, then you may start seeing that your current device isn't as fast or smooth compared to a better one. Now that I have a Pixel phone, I can confirm that it is the smoothest Android phone that I have used. The second one would be HTC 10 I guess.

trying to find an s7 to root and debloat, which model is ideal

if you don't care to read the not 100% required info, the question is in the middle -
I've had a s3, s4 and s5, all were rooted & debloated, all ran much better afterwards. when moving up from each one to the other, it was never my being unhappy with the phones - one was lost, one fell in the river while fishing, my most recent i ran over.
anyways, I've been trying to research the next logical replacement for my s5, (this p.o.s. temp phone I'm using is making it difficult however). I've been looking at s7's as they're in my price range and look like they'd be a good next phone. in trying to nail down which one though I've went from semi informed to I've been reading on here for so long now I'm feeling like i know less now than when i started. another thing making this difficult is each carrier has their own section where people are dealing with the phones they currently have, so reading each section doesn't give the perspective of 'if i had my choice, I'd get ____ one'.
so my question is, if i get an s7 that hasn't been updated to the most recent v8 bootloader version that's locked down, and my options are a lower 48 states phone (at&t is my carrier), which version or model would be most ideal to work with?
*not having ads and limiting the amount of collection of my data being collected (because i don't care to feed their machine) are my main needs.
i don't play games, i don't Facebook, i don't use any form of social media except for mechanical trade related forums. i don't bank on my phone.
i watch YouTube vids occasionally on NewPipe, i use my camera, i Google constantly, the only apps i use are adaway, sdmaid, afwall, naked browser and a root browser.
The Canadian version of the s7 has an Exynos processor and a bootloader that can be unlocked.

going off your recommendation, and looking through those threads, it looks like the Canadian version is the sm-g930w8. I've looked on swappa and didn't find one and via Google found a listing for them on Amazon, but those are apparently rebranded as such because they're the snapdragon version.
two questions -
1. is there somewhere else you think i might have better luck finding a good Canadian model here in the states?
2. since I'm looking to buy a phone and not married to any specific phone at this point, is there some other phone you might recommend to someone who could really care less about anything on a phone beyond a decent camera, external sd card slot, not super huge and the ability to block ads effectively (and preferably debloat, which root has always taken care of that and the ads)? I've got about $350 bucks, and that's flexible. i was looking at essential phones but couldn't pull the trigger on one because it seemed to me their limited production run and then potentially closing shop might prove problematic in some way or the other.
You could look on eBay.ca for the Canadian model. The European models also have an Exynos processor.
The problem is that many phones sold in the USA have locked bootloaders which makes rooting more difficult.
Phones with great cameras include the Huawei 20 Pro and LG but neither phone's bootloader can be unlocked.

great camera wouldn't be accurate. decent would be the bar I'm shooting for. i don't take pictures of people, moving objects, etc.. just mechanical things in marginal lighting, data plates/ stickers, invoices. . .. boring stuff.
I'm looking to identify the phones origin, therefore the correct processor, off the sticker under the battery, right? (versus the 'settings/ about phone' area).
thanks for you help btw, I'm not the most phone literate, and this p.o.s. temp cricket phone is seriously hindering my research abilities.
To identify the actual model number of a Samsung phone, it's best to boot into download mode. Unscrupulous sellers may put together a phone from different parts which means the model # on the sticker and phone settings match but the logic board is from a different model.
For Motorola and Google phones, the model # is shown on the fastboot screen.
A pixel 2 is a great phone but no SD card.
I've been using an iPhone 6s for more than a year and don't miss having removable storage.

ok. great info, good to know, woulda never thought to do that.
I'm curious. xda forums seems to be more the android developers, wanna-be's, and annoying tinkerers crowd (I'm in the last bunch). how does someone that's as interested in the inner workings of the phone's end up with a phone you can't mess with as much and have that as a daily driver?

I can be an annoying tinkerer too
I use an iPhone precisely because I can't tinker with it. I have two cell lines and get upgrades every year which means I have a chance to try different phones. Reading and finding ways to root, flash TWRP, trying different ROMs takes a long time. To stop myself from spending so much time tinkering, I I went for an iPhone. I still have a couple of Android phones (Moto Z, Huawei P20) but leave those stock, for now.

thank you for your answer. that's interesting to know and makes perfect sense.
I'm looking seriously into getting a pixel 2, based in large part on your recommendation. I've found one locally that the guy got straight from Google and will show me his receipt to prove that that. off of the top of your head, is there a best way to make sure that that phone somehow wasn't carrier branded originally and that it's bootloader is unlockable? i know the bootloader switch in developer options isn't greyed out which i gather it would be if it were a Verizon phone that'd been updated? will the previous way you'd mentioned work with this phone?
thank you again for sharing your insights and knowledge.
I don't believe Pixels were sold with any carrier branding, just like the iPhone.
I know Sprint and Verizon are CDMA carriers but that should have unlockable bootloaders.
Here's what I would check when buying a Pixel 2:
1) check for the blue screen tint issue;
2) check the IMEI to ensure that it is not blacklisted;
3) have the person reset the phone in front of you because and sign into your Google account to ensure the phone is not locked to a particular gmail account;
4) insert any sim card to make sure the card is read. You don't want to get a phone with a damaged sim reader that would be an expensive repair;
5) try as many functions as possible including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, make and receive a call, and speaker phone; and
6) get the USB-C to 3.5 mm headphone adapter.

Should I buy this phone?

Hi Everyone
I'm looking to upgrade from a Oneplus 3. Previously it was a great price for good specs.
I noticed the magic 3 whilst looking at YouTube and the specs look amazing.
1 - Interested to know of those who have had it for a while would you recommend getting it?
2 - what are the main annoying factors about the phone?
3 - Are there any others in the price range I should consider? I mostly play pubg, do retoo gaming and watch films with my existing phone
Many thanks in advance
Jamie
1 - Difficult to answer....if you're not into rooting and customizing, but happy with a basic Android experience and raw power, you should buy it......otherwise,if you want 100% flagship bells and whistless for half the price, you'll have to search futher,as this phone does not 'has it all' for just €479.
2 - For me,the most annoying thing is that there's much more to squeeze out of the camera,if Nubia's app would match the capabilities......but hopefully, there will be a working Gcam release in the near future.
3 - Xiaomi Mi 9....but I fell for the RM3.....
Many thanks for the reply, I don't mind rooting if necessary.
Also happy with a basic android experience as my oneplus was pretty much that when it first came out.
Thanks for the suggestion I will look into that also ??

I can tell the battery backup is awesome. Only problem I have is the gaming buttons are too annoying when playing a video.
I have it unrooted without gapps and IMO its better then some flagships. Reason is the big screen and the big battery and the stereo sound.
Also I prefer metal over Glas backside. And NO Notch.
The camera is better than that on my Xiaomi mi mix 3.
this phone is amazing, the only bad thing i see it had is not hdmi usb-c to support
I would wait for two main reasons:
1) Asus is going to announce their new ROG phone at the end of this month. While it will probably be a good deal more expensive, It might have some cool features
2) Nubia just announced they are going to release an 855 Plus version of this phone.

Thing is,no matter how long you wait ,there will always be something better on the horizon after your purchase.......no matter which device you've bought...
Hi,
Considering the price and the specs, I think the Red Magic 3 is about the best phone you can have nowadays.
If you buy it, you should consider two things :
- Chinese UI has a lot of features but is ugly and themes are mostly paid ones ;
- Europe/US/Asia ROM has ZERO features.
Once I recovered from the disappointment, the second solution was clearly what I was looking for.
So here is my advice :
- take the Europe/US/Asia version and flash it to your device (if it doesn't ship with that as stock)
- unlock the bootloader
-root your phone.
All this is done in like 4/5 minutes...
Once done, install all apps to add the required features.
You will have a phone that has ONLY THE FEATURES YOU WANT.
No bloat, no unnecessary stuff...
A dream come true
Of course, it comes with a price : once rooted, you will get OTA notifications but won't be able to install them...
Regards.

True
If you live in North America, I'd steer clear of this company.
I ordered one of their phones last week. I still have yet to receive my shipping notice. I ordered it with priority shipping, and according to their website, it should have shipped within 24 hours of payment.
4 days after it failed to ship, I contacted support, and was told "Be patient". Ever since then, they've stopped responding to emails. They won't give me any sort of clue as to when my order will ship. Apparently this is a frequent occurrence with Red Magic.
They're one of those companies that are only interested in getting devices out to reviewers, everyone else is to fend for themselves.
The support page on their website doesn't work. Apparently they didn't pay for it. Nubia cannot give any answers either, they just argue back in forth in the support email with several of the employees arguing about who's job it is to deal with.
If you ever receive a phone from them, and have an issue, good luck with that. Their current company (if you can call it that) shows that can't deal with supporting their devices. They can't even deal with fulfilling orders.
Stay far far away from this company, for you own good.
Is there likely to significant difference between the 8gb and 12gb ram? I think I'm going to get it but wonder if it's worth the extra money. Also just seen they mentioned the magic 4 by the end of the year. So maybe prices will come down
Well I'm in N.A. and I bought it from the site day it released. Great phone, few bugs at the moment and its a gaming phone at heart with stock Android, easily customizable. Honestly any game task you throw at it handles like a boss. It's an emulation dream with built in buttons. My controller and case should arrive the 22nd and I'm sure it will be great. I can tell you any Bluetooth controller works well on it too. The choice to buy is up to you, basically do you want a gaming phone or something else.
I have had this for two days in the USA and I love it. Usually I have buyer's remorse and would be looking for a new phone by now so I can say it really is great. Battery life is better than my S9 with a Mophie pack so far. Even with playing with it constantly I can't kill it in one day and usually my S9 needs to be plugged in by late afternoon. I have not rooted it yet, and may not. I love a clean version of Android. Not sure why people think that is bad. All the random customization sometimes comes with a speed cost. This phone is just plain fast. Usually I root to get rid of crap so you can see where I stand. If you hate big heavy phones, don't buy it. That is the negative. I had a ZTE Axon 7 and updates were slow so that's another negative. Other than that, super fast, great screen, great battery, strong data signal...it's a buy. Reminds me of the original OnePlus, or the Axon. Phones that were surprising values, but were big and heavy.

I'm coming from the OnePlus 3(T) as well, looking for a new device. What I didn't like at the Oneplus were the original ROM (luckily Lineage helped a lot) and the sound and position of the speaker. I loved the front facing stereo speakers of my HTC One (m7) years ago.
So I'm thinking of purchasing the RM3, but at the moment there are no alternative ROMS. Another device I'm looking at is the Black Shark 2, but situation with ROMs and support seems to be even worse.
For the RM3, I have concerns, if a fan inside a mobile will really last for some years, or break down at some time...
I also had the 3T and 1 and the 6T obviously this is just a better phone due to the increases in tech. No way to tell on the fan, I will say...and not sure how ZTE vs it's company Nubia will work, but my Axon 7 had a couple of screen issues due to my dropping it and the speaker stopped working, not sure if it was due to that and ZTE fixed it every time free of charge within the first year. I was very happy with their service on that phone. ROM support will be lacking but it's a clean version of Android so I prefer that

To me...a clean, lean ROM, which the US version is, rooted with Magisk and other mods I choose myself is always the best option. Some custom ROMs can get pretty bloated themselves

It depends on what you are looking for an what you want to do?
If you are a person who is happy with stock ROMs an just leaves cellphones in the state they are in out of the box then yes buy it.
However if you are a person who likes tinkering modifications an custom ROMs the please do not buy this cellphone.
I tried to install TWRP over 2 months ago an got stuck in a fastboot bootloop. Every xda suggestion to fix this plus paying a cellphone repair center an trying heaps of suggestions an it's still non functional.
It has horrible software an is rediculously sensitive to any and all attempts to FLASH ANYTHING.
If red magic 3s break you might never be able to fix them at a software level.
Mine lives in a bag by my bed to remind me not to bite off more than I can chew.
I have a xiaomi Mi9 now an have no real issues with it.
Good luck with your decision
So the options are to buy on Ali are with a stock Global Rom or a Chinese ROM. I see some other posts about people flashing to the Chinese one. Is that the best option to choose? I take it you can still select the language as English and support here etc? Thanks for everyone's responded it's been really helpful. I was thinking of holding out for the 855plus but not sure if I can afford which will be most likely an additional cost for it.
I also have the same question but mine is a bit different. Im convinced i am going to buy it but...
Should i buy it now or wait for the 855+ version? Idc if its gonna be a bit more expensive

I would of thought it would be more expensive as they still have the original to sell. Probably will stick another £100 on it or so I reckon ?
