Still worth buying?

Hey guys, in your opinion is the nexus 5 still worth buying?
how long will we continiue to get updayes and so forth?

It depends, if you can buy the phone for a low price yes. Have a look at the Nexus 4, it´s > 2 years old and still got the latest updates from Google.
If you can wait a few months longer, you might want to wait for the latest Nexus device from Google ?
Other than that, the Nexus 5 is still a great device. Maybe I´m going to use mine for another year.

In terms of performance , the nexus 5 is still one of the fastest/smoothest android devices , But since it is a nexus it has some downsides like the battery and the cameras (both) .
If you can get a great deal on it don't hesitate to take it , otherwise don't buy it .
I advice you to wait few months for the new nexus . Because now is not a good time to buy a pure android device , Few months from now there will be a new nexus and a new moto x and oneplus two .

Battery is terrible, camera is subpar, non-removable battery (can be changed with small tools) , no sd slot , everything else is good. Koodo sells the lg g3 that has 3000mah battery, removable battery, sd card for $400 cad outright.

Unless you like phablets, yes, it is worth buying. There may never be another stock device in a decent size again. This phone performs better than a nexus 6 too as far as I can tell. (Owned a nexus 6 for a couple months and wasn't impressed)

Lg g3 is far behind the nexus 5 in performance and user experience . My brother owns a G3 and he is not happy with it , every thing is good in the G3 except that It is terribly slow and laggy even with custom ROMs and kernels .
I don't know what was lg thinking when designing their UI , But they succeeded to make Android ugly , fat and slow !

That does look really nice. Perfect specs really. With that resolution it will perform better than any phone released yet. If I wasn't on Sprint I probably would check it out if the next nexus turned out to be too big. Sony doesn't seem to have a relationship with Sprint though and I cannot switch carriers due to signal issues at my work (I work in a hospital basement and Sprint has a contract with us for a system that gets signal to the basement. Any other carrier is no signal).

I went from the N5 to the G2 (on 4.4.2) and I'd say the experience is good but runs at 70% speed of the N5. On the other hand, I get double the battery of my previous N5's so I couldnt be happier. :victory:
To answer the question, Yes buy the N5 if the price is right, i.e. below $200 in good condition. If battery life is more important consider the G2 if you can get it below $200.

One of the new nexuses. Probably the LG smaller one, but depends on the rest of the specs. If the LG one is a big spec down from the huawei them a shot despite the size ill cross my fingers that its better fitting in my hands than the nexus 6. If the new moto X had a fingerprint reader and wi charging i would strongly be considering that, but wihout those 2 im not interested. Of course one plus no nfc is no go for me too despite other things.

I'm the kind of guy that likes to squeeze every last bit of life out of a device. My last phone was a 2nd gen. Samsung Galaxy which I used for 3 years. I upgraded at the time because I changed to a new provider which uses freqs not supported by the Samsung.
My next phone will probably be whatever latest Nexus device is available at that time.

I actually need to be able to copy files off the phone easily. Preferably with a cable, but a card.
The USB situation on the nexus 5 has made me start to look for a greener pasture, I'm looking at Moto and OnePlusTwo.
Any others people recommend?

I bought this Nexus 5 in late 2013. It'll be interesting to see what this year's Nexus lineup brings as I may be tempted to upgrade.
To be fair though, I need a battery replacement and I'll be good with this phone for another 1 or 2 years...

Today, I replaced the battery with a "fourheart bl-t9" battery, hopefully this $16 replacement will push the n5 into and through 2016.

I'll be grabbing the Huawei Nexus 6 and switching to Project Fi. Super excited!

What's the difference between 4 heart and lg battery?

I was under the impression that the four heart battery would have a more recent manufacturing date, but I was wrong, it was manufactured in 2013.
I've only had the battery for a day, so far it seems like it'll last a day with moderate usage, and it seems like it runs cooler than the original.

I'll be getting one of the two new Nexus' I'm sure shortly after they come out. However, if Google releases M for T-Mob to include wifi calling (like the Nexus 6), I'll probably hang on to my current N5 until next fall. So far it's only available for the N6.

I don't see any reason to change mine for at least another year, if I don't consider android M the catastrophe lollipop is then I'll get the new nexus 5, if not I'll just get an iphone. I'm still on kitkat and that wasn't the idea behind buying a nexus.

What about lollipop do you not like? I'm actually quite fond of it, so I'm just curious.
Anyway back on topic, I got the N5 in late 2013. Phone has been awesome since day 1. All the ROMs and dev support is honestly unmatched. My next phone will be whatever the latest nexus device is at the time I feel the need to upgrade.

Mainly I can get 2 hours more of battery with kitkat (being more noticeable after changing the battery), has this annoying scroll bug that I every time I scroll up, the flashlight crashes all constantly, I don't like the lockscreen, the dropdown works with the phone locked and the phone also feels slower, but I guess that one is on the animation speed so I can ignore.

yeah i agree, just im reading online, people are saying that camera is not so good, especialy front camera !

Yup, cameras are not great but I've been buying used N5 phones in various states of damage (bricked, ,smashed screen, dead camera, etc.) and putting the pieces together to make completely functional phones. For phones with a smashed screens, I purchase replacement screens (LCD, mi-frame, digitizer) from aliexpress. These replacement screens aren't as bright out of the box as the original but they are about 1/3 of the price of an original LG screen.

I've had my Nexus 5 for two years now. It has been such a good device. An absolute bang for the buck when I got it.
But it's been two years... You're most likely going to only find used Nexus 5 devices now, and the battery life on these devices will have deteriorated by now. Additionally, official Android support will probably be dropped in 2016 (there is still a fair amount of developer support here on xda though).
If you do decide to get a Nexus 5, don't be disappointed that the battery only lasts with 3 hours of screen on time and that regular official Android updates are probably going to disappear in 2016.
As of right now, perhaps look at the WileyFox Storm for a new budget smartphone.

I have 2 of them technically (I broke a sceen a while back) and I still love the phone. Honestly the only thing that has irritated me is that it doesn't have a micro sd slot.
I swore I'd never buy a phone without a microsd card again, but I recently ordered a 5x from the play store.
This time, I'm also going to really miss wireless charging...but since usbc charges so much faster it probably won't matter to me all that much.
For a while anyway...up until the battery life starts going to crap. My n5 batteries are atrociously bad now on life. I tried switching the unbroken phone back to the battery that was not broken, and well, it's still bad.
I probably won't keep the 5x for very long, I've just been tired of waiting for a new phone that has everything I want.
The Sony Xperia Z5 (And maybe even the compact) really was so close to a perfect replacement for me...but I'll be damned if I put up with a micro-usb port on a phone that does not have wireless charging.

I like this phone but I don't know if i like it enough to have it for 2 years. With the iphone 8 and the Samsung s8 or note 8 coming next year makes me want to wait. I don't like how it doesn't have wireless charging and it doesn't have the camera stabilizer for taking pics, also no water protection. So with the people that have this phone please tell me what you think of it. Thabks all.

Wait. You are setting yourself up for a disappointment with all that you see wrong with the device before even buying it. And the price will drive you nuts with those shortcomings you find objectionable.

Here's a suggestion - make up your own mind instead of relying on other people. Not everyone has to like the same things for the same reasons.

Come on guys, I think you're being unfair. All of us who have bought the phone ought to write a review every time somebody is thinking about buying one and can't be bothered to read the comments and reviews already posted here and on youtube.

Realistically every phone is going to have certain shortcomings, and to me the Pixel looks like first-generation hardware with a top-tier asking price. After seeing the Pixel, I decided to buy the iPhone 7. That's when I found out Apple doesn't provide anything like an LED or ambient display to indicate waiting notifications. That one issue is worth the cost of a return for me, but apparently it's also acceptable to the people that bought the billion previous iPhones. The Pixel checks a lot of items off my interest list, and it misses some. Like other phones available today and in the future, there are areas where the Pixel does and does not compare favorably with other options. Ultimately I think it cost me $35 to find out that an LED notification is more personally important than waterproofing, image stabilization, or wireless charging.

I've been with Android since the HTC Droid Eris. Things are advancing so rapidly now, it is worse that trying to buy an up to date PC back in the day...by the time you got home someone had the specs of your brand new toy beat. It seems even worse now with smartphones. I find myself getting ever closer to a phone that tick all my wants. However, when that starts happening, everybody will keep the phone they have for two years instead of getting a new one every year. That won't help the sales plateau smartphones seem to be in. Today you have to be prepared for the phone you buy today to be one tier behind in a very short time. Just the way it is.
I have to say my new Pixel is the best smartphone I have ever used and it is not even close. I retired an LG V10. The V10 is about as far behind the Pixel as the Galaxy S4 was behind the V10. No it is not perfect, but no other top tier phone today is perfect either. If the Pixel is judged to be too expensive, then so are the rest of the top tier brands.
I'd say get it. Be careful with it and return it if you have some issue.

I have read tons or reviews but here is the thing, those reviews are a lot of the time done by people that wrote for a living and not the average person that is going to use this phone. Most of the time they write these reviews because they get all new phones shipped to them for free and not the average person that gets a new phone once every 2 years. I guess in all, I know what the reviews say and the YouTube videos look like but I wanted to know what the average person says about the phone. Not the expert says about the phone. Thabks.

Youre gonna wait every 6 months... Pixel 2 next year..
Personally I hold out until the next phone I buy has significant upgrades..
I went from Nexus 4 to Nexus 6 to LG G4 to LG v10 (I fell for the 2nd screen gimmick, but it wasnt anything more over the G4), skipped LG G5, skipped Nexus 6p, considered One plus 3, but Pixel Xl filled a few of the most important boxes for me.
Hype, bandwagon, fantastic screen that turns iPhone/samsung owner's heads, accessories, accessories, super active community, fast, fast loading camera ready to take a picture, unlimited cloud, build quality, looks and balance.
I'm hoping assistant, gps and navigation will work well as I use them a lot and most phones have worked ok, but fail..
Im still waiting on my preorder....

I am happy with T-Mobile giving a 325 dollar credit for this phone, so it's totally worth it for me.

Yup it is missing those, but if these bother you then don't buy it because it is an expensive phone and if you are not 100% satisfied with what it is offering then yep wait for the next big thing.
For me currently this is the best phone out there satisfying all my needs and desires, and also it was time to replace my aging Nexus 5. Loving the pixel

I'm in a boat whether to buy this phone or not.. Between pixel, oneplus 3 or xiaomi mi note 2. Not sure how roms will be for the pixel, so will wait and see how that pans out and reviews for the MI note 2

See that is a worthwhile upgrade. I went to an n5x so the pixel is not worth the cost. It just depends on where you're coming from.

Same here! I was going to pass on the Pixel because of the price but with that promo, I ordered two for me and the missus. A Pixel for $325 is an amazing deal!

Exactly what I thought, I almost purchased a 5x but decided to wait for the next nexus, didn't know that time that it was going to be a pixel, but yeah for me it is worth the upgrade. If i had purchased the 5x then I am pretty sure I would be in the same boat as you, lol for me even the freakin fingerprint scanner is an upgrade

I'm different than most that posted here. I like to buy/sell when new devices come out. There is no perfect phone for anyone. I also am not biased towards android or apple.
I have recently used moto x, moto x 2nd gen, htc m9, sony z3 compact, oneplus3, iphones 5s,6,6s,&7/7+
I'm currently using the oneplus 3, iphone 7, and just got the pixel yesterday.
All these phones have there advantages/disadvantages as previously mentioned.
There will always be something better around the corner. If you keep waiting, you'll be waiting forever. If you need a phone right now, best options in my opinion are the pixel, oneplus3, iphone 6s or 7, but that depends on your needs too. If you don't need a phone right now wait it out till you do.
Phones are somewhat similar to pcs right now. They are not really getting any faster for typical use, just better cameras typically and a few different options in the os.
The oneplus 3 imo is the best 5.5" android phone for the money. It's almost perfect for my needs but comes with some minor bugs and not the best speakers for music. $400, can't be beat by any phone and is the fastest android phone out i believe. It is faster than the pixel.
Pixel is a great phone. Fingerprint sensor location takes some getting used to. Android 7 and pixel launcher are nice but come with some bugs and lack of options. Phone can be laggy at times during normal use. Great deal if you get in on the t-mobile promo. I don't like the big top/bottom bezels but i can live with it. With future updates, this could be my new close to perfect phone.
IPhone 7 is nice but overhyped. Iphone 6s is just as good. Iphone 7 speakers and camera slightly better, maybe slightly faster but nothing like Apple claims.
You need to decide what you really want then pick the phone that best fits for the price you want yo pay.
If you want a cheap avg android phone, go with the oneplus 3. It's a great price and competes with the high end phones extremely well. Otherwise pony up. There are limited choices for a decent priced phone anymore and definitely typically come with drawbacks that I'm not willing to sacrifice.

I currently have the Samsung s7. I'm on Verizon. I ordered a pixel from Google because with the financing you can pay it off early. On Verizon Device payment plan you have to pay monthly or just pay the entire phone off at once.
I've been reading reviews and got impatient and ordered the phone from Verizon. I saw were you could get 20% off with the Save20 code but it didn't work for me because of my corporate discount. However, Verizon is giving trade in value for any phone. If I traded in my S7 I could get $300 but I want to keep it in case I don't like the pixel.
What I did was buy an iPhone 4 from ebay for $30. Verizon gave me a $200 credit for that phone and I ordered the 128gb pixel. So I got that phone for 750-200+30=$580. I think I paid $650 for my Nexus 6P 64gb last year.
Options that Verizon and tmobile offer make it a no brainer to get this phone. I think if Google had released this phone to all carriers or when they do you will have many people buying and loving this phone. That is the problem. Not what the phone is missing it's because people don't want to pull the trigger because of the price.

I'm am average user but love pure android and had nearly all the Nexus phones and coming from the 6p to the pixel, have to say love it. Great camera, faster better in low light, phone is bonkers quick with excellent battery life and very crisp clear screen. Also easier to handle than my 6p. Very expensive but worth it? Just about.

[Q] Replacement for Nexus 5 (2017 edition)

Hey all, I've seen a few posts out here similar that were older. My wife has a Nexus 5. It has been alright but she runs into space issues and hasn't been super thrilled with the battery. I have a 5x that I've loved (except it does a weird thing now where the screen won't come on when its in a call, but that's a whole other matter). She's dropped the phone and it's old enough to make me not want to mess with that, so it's time to look for something else.
I was wondering currently in June 2017, what a decent replacement would be for a Nexus 5. I would imagine there are all kinds of options out there that should be decent quality and cheap. Main goals at this point are 32 gig and a good battery. Wouldn't mind SD card capability and replaceable battery but from what I understand, you can't get as many replaceable battery phones anymore.
I'm not 100% opposed to buying one used if there are some that hold up well, but obviously new would be nice. I'm not looking for latest/greatest, just something she will appreciate that will work for awhile. Before we had our Nexus phones, we had the Moto G line, which obviously are kind of bargain basement types and it showed, so I hate to make that mistake again.

Lenovo P2: SD 625, 5100mAh battery and 32/64GB storge with dual sim or single sim + sd card.

Pragmatically and from my perspective, since I am in the same situation searching for a replacement, the short answer is no. Never. I came over from Apple due to the easier customization ability of Android at the time.
I bought the N5 I have now, second-hand, originally for a family member (but they wanted an Apple), so I got stuck with it. Already rom'd. After getting used to the Android system, I said fine, I'm ditching Apple. Not say their stuff is bad. It just wasn't for me.
A broken screen, a new battery, and constantly rebooting to get a signal and nearly 3 years later and updating through first CM and now Pure Nexus.
I run this thing like a nuclear reactor especially during semester months.
Nothing beats it's simplicity. Nothing. It's one of the best pieces of tech I have ever owned and continues to be my daily driver. I did jump ship to an M9 and while a very impressive device. I yearned for my N5 (I thought it was dead). Got it back to functionality and haven't been back. Needless to say, here's what I am mulling over.

Samsung S7 (or if I hit the lotto S8)
The Moto's. Since the Pure Nexus community is giving them a lot of love right now, especially the one with the crazy battery life but the 625 processor (if it was Daydream compatible I would've gotten it already).

The high end xiaomi (I forget the model name)
An HTC 10. Another nice and underrated phone.
I can wax poetic about the N5 for days. Nothing beats it's flexibility, simplicity (aforementioned), and usability. Us N5 users do not need the bells and whistles and yet that's nice but we do more with less. I, too, will lament the day my hammerhead finally goes. In the meantime​, I hope my long-winded account helps you out.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately most of them are quite a bit higher in price than we paid for this Nexus. We had actually used the Moto G line prior to this.
I also have to say that since this is for my wife, I may need to watch out on the screen size being overly gigantor. She may not want something that is too much bigger than the N5. That Lenovo is the best in price so far, but for some reason it doesn't have very good rating on Phone Arena. Wonder why?

I still have my nexus, but upgraded to a Huawei Nova, not the Nova Plus, mainly due to spec improvements and similar screen size. Got 4gb memory and 64gb storage, about the exact same size as the Nexus. I hate the Huawei UI, but CM is available for it now, so not really an issue. It might be a bit pricey though. The Huawei Honor, I think 6x, also has a model that is 5.5in screen.
Not trying to sell Huawei, was just checking the price in the US of the one I have and noticed the Honor was similar. I got the Nova CAZ-AL10 for the specs, price, size, and because it is compatible with the mobile networks here in China. The Nexus was not unfortunately.

I think an Asus Zenfone 3 might not be a bad option. It has great battery life and it's not too expensive
I had a nexus 5x and just came back to my nexus 5 with a custom rom and I am loving it!!!

After the lost of my N5, I got an OP 3T and not even rooted it, sweet and fast on stock.

What about leeco pro 3. I own one and it is for sure one of the best phones for its price if not the best (USD 199, might be even lower now) the stock ROM isn't much to chant for but put a custom ROM on it and you're golden. They were running a sale on amazon a few weeks back but I'm not sure about its current availability. Snapdragon 821 with 4 to 6gb of ram and 64gb of storage. The camera is its weakest point but it's honestly not that bad. Battery life is also great averaging 6 SOT on nougat and around 8 on stock. 100% recommend.

How about OnePlus 5? I was considering replacing my N5 with it, but I'm not convinced by their previous software support.

Is there a device that can't be rooted? I think so far all of the OnePlus devices where pretty open and got root quickly. Given that the OP5 has just been announced today, there is no root yet, but I'd be surprised if there isn't a root mid-july.

I don't know. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know. I think some devices are said to be easier to root than others which is what I meant to ask. I own a couple of nexus 5s and an old nexus 7 and they are easy to root. Just don't know enough about the op5.

I think to replace my nexus 5 and I hesitate between the nexus 6p (I find one at 190 euros used) or a nexus 5x (has 100 euros used too) what would be the best choice for you?
