hi,
does anybody else have huge cell standby drain? it consumes most of my battery at around 27% over a day. 10% of it happened overnight. I am still testing for wakelocks and signal strength, but I hope someone had this issue already, and maybe found a solution.

Hi,
Try disabling the Always on display, I had battery drain 10% overnight and disabled it only drained 2% may be it's that...

Yeah I did so not sure what caused it to drain that fast. Devsk in another thread states something similar and switches his off oh well good attempt by HTC to do something different which is appreciated.

Yeah cell standby drain is high even for me right now. I had it on normal U11 but it didn't affect usage.
On here, my battery life is only 5 hours SOT over 24 hours, so the same as U11. Cell standby drain took 30% battery.

5 hours SOT is not great for me, at least from this big a battery, it should be a comfortable 5 hours not just barely.
I have identified the biggest culprit. it is location services. on battery saver it consumed 15% overnight. if I turn it off it was only 4%.I am testing a few other options. tonight I will check how high accuracy affects it, then location history if it does not solve it
Today, mobile network standby absolutely destroyed my battery. It used 40% of my battery.

I think it might have to do something with location services and network strength. the network is not the strongest in the room I sleep, but I never had such a horrible drain with any phone

Do you leave mobile data on overnight?
Could be that its swopping from 4g/3g constantly which can kill your battery.
could try changing the sim modes by typing *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer? experiment under phone info, set preferred network type.

Setting to 3g only for example didn't really change much.
Also it seems that your U11+ may not be going into deep sleep. I don't always have wifi/data on all the time and overnight my battery drain is only 2 to 3% as stated in previous post and mobile network standby was 30%. But it's currently on 4% so not sure what the difference is...
HTC haven't solved this issue since U11…Maybe needed more people to report this bug or HTC won't do anything for this
In developer options try turning off always on data. It's an Oreo feature but seems an unnecessary drain on battery.

only affects WiFi usage
I think I solved the issue.
I usually only use data, leave location on (battery saver mode without wifi scanning, Google location history enabled).
the thing that likely solved it for me was to reset the network settings.
Settings/System/Reset/Network settings reset
it goes to sleep properly I get 1-2% drain overnight.
alternatively somebody mentioned that clearing cache for sense home might do it as we. I did it both, and no longer have the issue (for 3 days, right now I am turning stuff back on to see if it might be something else)
if someone has the issue and tries it, let me know if this is an actual solution for you
Will want to see actual confirmation though with battery stats after a full day otherwise these claims are moot

here's the past 4 days
I am not sure why GSam only saved 4 days, I was running it for more. bot on the first day I still had the issue, and since then I was trying to fix it.
the only 2 other things that I can think of what solved the battery drain was that I do not just throw the phone on my chair, but lay it on a flat surface, or that due to the holidays the cell reception around my area was worse, and that was the one draining the battery and causing the low reception. if I check now, the cell strength is exactly the same, but in GSam in cell usage I had a lot more Low showing up. after a reset, this seems to have been solved

1. From screenshot it says 3G.. You sure you are on 2G all the time or this was just rare case?
2.From graph it seems like you charged phone in between from pretty low to quite respectable 70 - 80%.
3. I get this kind of battery on medium usage with single charge. So if you charged in between then your battery seems poor.
4. Do check background services running and disable what you can.. From usage you specified, you should not require many running things. Use greenify to automate this things.
He says he uses WhatsApp as well? Does it work on 2G connection too?. Thought I'd point out.

If you tap on the graph itself you'll be able to see if the phone was awake frequently or if it was losing signal, etc...
If you're seeing that the phone was awake often, try BetterBatteryStats to see what is keeping your phone awake.
Wakelock Detector is another app to try and pin down the problem.
Also, maybe try wifi overnight instead of LTE to see if that might be the issue.

What is especially strange is it appears you're on WiFi, and yet both the voice and data connection seem to be causing the largest drain here.
Tap the graph so we can get an idea of what the awake times and signal strength was like.
I have a similar gripe and I pinned mine down to stupid photos uploading overnight via wifi and a bunch of other wifi related crap....pretty much network things causing battery drain. also the auto update's killing it for google play stuff.
I found that switching to dalvik and back to ART [which i was on] helped a bit though i supposed there's a process running somewhere in the background that's buggy...here's hoping 4.4.x fixes it
Switch to ART cleared it for me

I also saw the same. Turning off functions, etc. had no effect, but switching form Dalvik to ART did. I'm guessing that the change probably cleared something in the OS that was actually causing the problem. Note that the reported sources of battery usage are almost the same in both images, even though battery usage rate is vastly different.
I've attached two screen shots before and after the runtime switch. The red arrow on the before image is when I made the runtime change.

This is a shot from last night. I went to bed with about 50% battery life and woke up with a dead phone. Looks like cell signal maybe...
I am already using ART, but maybe I should switch back to dalvik and back to art like someone suggested earlier.
I've noticed more battery drain as well as reduced cell signal. My phone is losing connection in areas where I'd previously have 1-2 bars. I was thinking T-Mobile was changing things on their towers, but I'm starting to see other Nexus 5 owners complaining about it as well. Did they update something in the background on our phones?
You REALLY need to get Gsam and take some screens from it after a night. The stock battery usage screen shots say very little of use.
Otherwise we're are all just guessing here.

FWIW, I just noticed that my battery usage is increasing significantly again. So, I may try the same thing if it persists.
I'd say there is definitely a bug somewhere, possibly interacting with an app or a subset of apps. Are you using Tasker, by any chance?

Obvious culprits are WiFi and radio. Check in gsam (might be too late if you charged) for kernel Wakelocks. Or try wakelock detector app.
You could have a WiFi issue caused by other devices on your network. Would have to search on that for causes and cures. I'm not sure. I only know its been an issue.
And you appear to have no radio signal at all. If you go in to radio screen from main gsam screen, it will tell you your time searching for signal. That can destroy battery life.
It doesn't seem to he an app. Or general held awake time...as you have hardly any.
Putting phone in airplane mode over night would prove its WiFi or radio.
---------- Post added at 09:44 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:41 AM ----------
If a night of airplane mode is no better, then its a rogue app. That you'd need to track down. Process of elimination style.
But its probably either WiFi or radio signal. I guess if you have location service on, it could be adding to the trouble.
Turning off WiFi would show if its WiFi....or radio. But with very poor radio signal....I know you're battery will take a beating anyway.

What's puzzling to me is that it was not an issue until a week ago, then converting to ART made it go away temporarily.
My radio signal is poor, but it's always that way at home. I definitely plan to see what airplane mode does. Will report results.

These images are from last night. I went to sleep with about 55 percent and woke up with 31%. The screenies are from betterbatterystats. Maybe you guys see something...
Definitely radio in my case
kj2112, you were right on. :good:
Running in airplane mode removes all serious battery drain on my Nexus 5. If I turn WIFI on, there is only minor battery usage. I've installed OpenSignal and will try monitoring radio reception vs. battery drain.
I'm still puzzled by the sudden onset (could be a problem with my nearest tower, I suppose), and the fact that switching from Dalvik to ART dramatically improved battery life for a few days. That's hard to link to the poor cell signal.
I'm still suspicious that there is a software component, that may or may not be interacting with my cell signal strength.
Follup up / more info
Based on posts on other forums, I tried excluding LTE from my preferred network types, and my battery usage improved dramatically. If I choose 3G, signal strength is 2-3 bars. 2G gives me 4-5 bars. With LTE I get 0-1 bars - mostly 0. On 2G my battery life is the best I've ever seen
My suspicion is that the sudden change I saw was caused by a change in the way the radio software selects network speed options. It appears that if the preferred network type selected is LTE, the phone now will expend maximum effort continually to connect to LTE, even if there is no useful signal available. Before the change, it's likely that a stronger LTE signal was required before the phone would attempt a connection.
I'm not sure if the OS determines where that set point is located or if it's something the carrier can control. If it's the carrier then maybe the Nexus 5 has a radio that isn't as efficient as other phones, and the current algorithm is pegged to the best case phone.
If anyone knows how to adjust the conditions for attempting to connect to LTE or has any ides about who does control it, I'd definitely like to know. For now, I set my phone to 2G or 3G when I'm in a poor LTE reception area (which with T-Mobile is most of the time). That actually works okay for me, but I doubt it's a solution for everyone.
Hi there,
I've had my Google Nexus 5 for a few weeks now and the battery life on it seems to be very hit and miss. Sometimes it'll make it through the day ok and others it won't. Today I haven't really used my phone very much and the battery is already down to 17%! I've followed the suggestions in the forum but any ideas as to what is causing this? I don't have my email set to push (I just check it when I need to), Facebook isn't set to automatically get notifications, Google Now is off (and the location settings are set to preserve battery) but I'm puzzled as to how the battery life is so bad. In terms of brightness, it's set down to around 20%.
My old Samsung S3 was never this bad!
use GSAM or better battery stats to find what is keeping your phone awake.
There were no other battery threads to post this in?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Apologies, I should have posted this in another battery post. Do I have to be rooted to use better battery stats?
Your cellular signal looks low. Your phone could be spending a lot of time hunting for a tower. Try using WiFi. You can also try putting your phone into either airplane mode or turn cellular data off.

You don't need root for gsam, tho with root you get more useful stats.
just a guess, but I agree, your Poor signal is likely destroying your battery.
I'd have to agree with others based on the minimal amount of information provided. Low signal + Google services (Auto Sync, etc.) trying to use that low signal is going to eat through any phones battery no matter how big.
Ok so I used Greenify to clear out any apps that I thought could have been causing the battery drain but to no avail. I've also installed GSAM battery monitor and that reports my battery usage as 5% per hour. The funny thing is I've come from a Samsung S3 which only had a 2100mah battery and my Nexus 5 gets nowhere near that in terms of battery life.

Anyway, its your signal. It doesn't show up as big usage on any app. you're signal is very poor. That's your issue.
Not a lot you can do. Except turn off data. Or use WiFi. Or even airplane mode.
That's about it.
Nothing will save your battery with data on with such a low signal.

You have normal and low awake time....so almost the only other possibility is radio signal. Or a rogue and sneaky app. Is location services on? That's usually what rogue apps interact with to cause bad drain. Just if that's the case, android o/s is usually real high. The last thing is screen brightness...if its real bright it will drain fast.
Try WiFi.....then look at those other options I said.
Good luck! ?
Dear all,
I have a Pixel 2 and am having some issue with battery life. Some days, it is crazy good: I leave my phone at 100% before going to bed, and I find it at 100% when I wake up in the morning (about 7 h of deep sleep for both me and the phone). Some other days, I lose about 40% over the same period of time. In both situations, I don't touch the phone from when I go to bed until morning. Bluetooth is disabled, WiFi and Mobile are enabled. My WiFi router is always on and I have very good cellular signal.
I thought that a rough app/wakelock could be the culprit but, using BetterBatteryStats, I have not been able to find any. The only unusual "process" seems to be one that is called "No Data Connection" and "No or Unknonw Signal", which show up as 87%, whatever that means.
Does anybody have any ideas as to what could be the source of the problem?
Many thanks!

Losing 40% charge in standby mode is a serious issue. Could be a defective battery. Why don't you return the phone to the store you bought from and get a new one?
Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk
Maybe you have dodgy mobile coverage where you are? If signal is weak or in/out of service any phone will use a lot more power trying to stay connected to a tower it can find. You may also experience that a phone seems to 'camp on' to a tower with a weak signal (consuming more power) even when it sometimes finds a stronger one from the same location.
No solution, other than to move!
I didn't experience any of this with my, now, old Nexus 5x, so I'd say that mobile coverage is unlikely to be the cause.

Once on my Pixel I lost that amount and as it turns out a news app was running a video all night long. I sincerely doubt it's a defective battery but rather a rogue app and that's why a reboot fixes it. Push comes to shove you will have to head over to the BBS forum and post a log file. There are instructions in the OP.
Getting fine screen on time, but bad standby time. I left my phone idle for more than 10 hours, and everything looks fine...but I'm draining more than 2% per hour doing nothing! When I use the phone normally, idle drain is closer to 3%, with still not specific problem that can be seen. On Oreo stable, it was around 1.5%, which is still bad compared to my iPhone, but not unbearable. I had no SIM installed because it was in my iPhone, but with or without makes no noticeable difference.
Advanced optimization, sleep standby optimization AND adaptive battery also make no noticeable difference in ANY combination on and off.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Edit: You might also notice the VPN icon, it's not a normal VPN (with active, keep-alive connection), but a proxy for those of us living in China. Again, I've tested on or off, no difference, and you can't see it in wakelocks or processes.
and kernel wakelocks?

My bad.
Did you try turning off the WiFi scanning?

Off by default I believe. It's off for me.
I need those pictures after let's say 6 hours of standby. I need to see standby usage only. So make a custom mark when you go to bed and then take the SS

I don't understand. This is 11 hours of stats idle, on my table at home, with no one touching it. This is no different from ide overnight on my bedside table except total time. I have gathered overnight stats many times with exactly the same results as what's shown here trying to figure out what's wrong.
Could also be a bad WIFI, seen this before for some 5ghz networks.
Is bbs being optimized in battery settings?
try 2.4ghz wifi if you can (where you have good connection, OR just turn wifi off, so we can rule that out the equation.)
make sure better battery stats is NOT being optimized
and try one more time.

Thanks for those suggestions. I hadn't tried switching to 2.4ghz or un-optimizing better battery stats. Unfortunately, there is no noticeable difference yet again. Turning Wifi off totally used to help a bit in Oreo, but hasn't made any difference at all in Pie.
Having the same issue too. Idle drain is fairly high on pie. Wakelocks are pretty clean too. I'm convinced it's something Google related or it's just the system isn't all that optimized as they want us to believe

Thanks for the reply. That makes me feel a little better. Most people on the internet complaining about Pie drain of course has no idea how to actually check anything beyond Android stock battery stats, so there's no way to corroborate.
I noticed that beta 4 has " * Optimized standby power consumption " listed as a system fix. But I don't want to clean flash in and then clean flash out of beta yet again because all of them have had such horrible touch latency that dozens of users are complaining about. But I'm almost tempted to try it.
Can anyone on beta 4 chime in?

I'm on beta 4, first dirty flash and I had 0.3%/hour
I cleanflashed few days back,no root,locked bootloader. I loose 4% in 7hrs 30 minutes. So it's ok.. with GPS,wifi bluetooth on.
Touch latency is like stable pie.
i flashed the ob4 and wait to see battery consumption how it goes! i did'nt lose any files or settings

Thanks for the feedback! But 0.3% / hour? I'm skeptical. I'm not sure that any Android phone has ever been that low draining, ever. Certainly not in my years of experience. I don't think that's possible even with no apps installed. You can't post any wakelock details because you're not rooted... Maybe post a screenshot of your battery usage graph, please?

I have posts in the battery thread with BBS.
I had the same with my S7 edge.. so you can doubt all you want,I really don't care. Will post picture with an edit when I find it.

Well, I stand corrected. I have no idea what perfect storm of perfect conditions is represented here to get standby drain to near-iOS levels of amazingness, but that's impressive.

Thanks. I feel like I'm being really lucky with this device tho.
I will get my root on today, clean flash again and I will just set it up and see where it lands. But I thought no what saves my battery the most is really good reception. The antenna is around 100meters (300 feet) from my house, WiFi is on point aswell (best on 2.4ghz)
So, like I said the bootloader got unlocked, root is on again so everything is fresh.
The smart battery didn't even have time to read apps that's draining battery this is standby usage with stock settings from OnePlus, without any optimizations. Im counting on adaptive battery that it will do its thing after a day or two.
I have around 20 apps installed but the ones that matter for battery is Telegram, instagram, steam.
