The only reason I rooted was to enable native hotspot on ATT. I literally have no other reason to root. I'd like to be able to install OTAs normally. If I unroot, will the buildprop edit be removed? What about if I update via an OTA?

I would like to update to the latest firmware. I have not updated since I rooted a while back. I am still on firmware 8.6.5.6 and would like to update to the latest.
What is the best way to proceed?
Obviously, I don't want to break anything in the process of updating. I would like to keep my root or reroot at the very least. Although the only real reason I rooted in the first place was to boost my clock speeds. So I am even willing to unroot if that's the best/easiest way.
Thanks!
So, if I root my nexus s gsm on tmobile, can I still get OTA updates for say Key Lime Pie?
1- will it still be rooted after an ota?
2- I don't want to install custom rom, can i just keep jelly bean and then whatever comes next?
my understanding is that most people without stock andoid who take an OTA wind up with carrier bloatware etc which wouldn't matter with me since its stock android and no carrier bloatware.
with root i would be able to do some things I can't now (main thing projecting screen onto computer
thx in advance
usually you will lose root after ota.
however, if you use SuperSU Pro (Superuser's alternative), it can try to retain root after ota, but it's not guaranteed though. you'll need pro version if you want that feature.
so the new ota update is out
my s3 has stock ics and doesnt have the bootloader unlocked, it does have root access
now I assume from other people posting the update does break root acces
so if I update can I just reroot with this and everything will be fine?

some people mentioned something about a "server not running" message
what is that exactly?
Does anyone know for sure if you can get OTA updates if you uproot and reset your tablet? Or is Knox being tripped the thing that causes you to not get OTA?
Thanks.
Depending on root method and version of recovery installed these tablets may complain that they're modified and refuse to update. Fundamentally though the cardinal rule of rooting Android devices is NEVER blindly search for and apply OTA updates once you're rooted unless you know what you're doing. There's no guarantee (other than Nexus devices) that a manufacturer isn't attempting to patch a root exploit as part of their OTA so there's risk of not only losing root but losing the ability to root in the future.
Here's another recent discussion on your question.

Just as an update, after unrooting and doing a factory restore on the tablet, it's still considered "modified" and won't download OTA updates. I guess it goes off knox being tripped. That's to bad. I was looking to sell mine, gonna be harder now.
My understanding is as long as your rooted with stock recovery you will still receive updates, my note 2 had knox tripped but was rooted with stock recovery and I was able to get AT&T kit Kat update.

Doesn't seem to be the case with this tablet.
I have stock recovery, unrooted, and did a factory reset. It won't let me get OTA updates. Granted, I can still get them from Kies.
I could be missing something though, not sure what.
Just got the OTA reminder and wonder if I can update that way but keep the root?
I dont think you can upgrade while rooted.
Ohh I see. I was under the impression that it was possible, but depending on what the update was updating you could or perhaps wouldn't lose root
You can't update while rooted through OTA.
Besto option is to use a pre-rooted firmware.
