ROMs stuck in bootloop after working well for a while - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all. I found my Moto G ( XT1033) and decided to use it as a backup phone. Anyway, I flashed a CM12.1 ROM. Worked well for a while before switching off and getting stuck on a bootloop. Strange, I've already used it for some time. I thought maybe there were some problems with the ROM file. But now, I've tried it with Tesla, Blisspop, CM11, CM13. All have worked well for me in the past. Every ROM is facing the same problem.
Any help would be appreciated.

i face the same problem. its like everyday i have to do stock rom on my phone because it stuck on boatloader.

if all new clean flashed ROMs result in boot loops, you will have to reinstall stock ROM (with fastboot) to fix it. flashing stock ROM with custom recovery will not fix it though

Any idea what's causing it, though? I'm not able to flash a ROM into the device using the fastboot method. I've tried various builds, they all show the error after a few commands 'PARTITION SIZE IS SMALL' .

i'm not exactly sure whether you did it right. refer;

Stuck at boot animation for Custom ROM. (Bootloop)

I Rooted my XT-1033. And having CWM recovery. Now I'm installing custom ROM EHNDROIX V.
I followed all steps. After Installation it stuck at it's boot animation.
I moved back to Stock ROM. Ant solution for this situation.
Flash single sim rom first.. And try to flash the custom rom.. Many custom roms won't work on dual sim version.. And read the instruction carefully
Sent from my XT1032 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I learned (through trial and error) that is (at least for the CM 11) impossible on the Moto G to flash the custom ROM from Kitkat. I first had to revert it back to the stock rom without the Kitkat upgrade before applying the CM 11 custom ROM. Otherwise it would also get stuck at boot animation.

common problem.. /data and /data/media needs to be reformatted in order to boot custom rom. but that pose even more difficult situation where the zip file needs to be pushed via adb.
downgrading and installing custom seems to work easily.

Yeah there are very few ROMs fro dual sim variant. And followed each and every step while flashig this ROM. Like wiping Data/Cache/Dalvik. Still problem persist.

Thank you for response. Are you sure about this. That I have to go back to JB and then try.

Thank you for response. Can you please tell me in details what do you mean by wiping /data and /media. Generally cwm backup is stored there afaik. And downgrading what ?
now wait just a second i own the single sim version x1032 and got it retail with 4.4.2 out of the box, rooted and booloader unlocked. so far ive tried both lego rom (x1032 single sim version supported and another single sim rom supported rom) they both get stuck on bootanimation. Whats my solution? i, no noob and ive had to restore my stock firmware each time after waiting 15 mins each.
btw im installing from a usb flash drive with a micro usb connector directly plugged to phone. dont think its the issue cause it backs up and restores stock rom just fine.

ROM installation problems

I've been flashing ROMs, recoveries etc for years on every android device I've had, from Samsung to nexus, HTC. Everything. This is my first Motorola and I'm having a lot of problems.
Unlocked the boot loader, flashed TWRP but wouldn't backup my stock ROM so put on Pholz recovery and it wouldn't backup either.
Tried to install C-Rom after the usual wipes and just sticks at boot screen. Tried Tweakone ROM I think its called and same problem.
Any ideas? I have the XT1032
I know about restoring to factory but what I'm asking is, is there anything specific I'm doing wrong? I'm quite an experienced flasher. Research is showing me how to recover the phone but what's gonna stop it happening again

A lot of users report issues not being able to flash rom's on 4.4.2 kitkat.
A fix is to downgrade to 4.3, then flash roms.
I dont know why. I bought my device upgraded to 4.4.2 already, and i can flash roms with no issues.
Search the forum for the topic and you will find the info you need.

It wont backup saying what error?
Twrp just said 'failed' in red writing after the data backup I think. And philz touch said something along the lines of Not being able to write a file into the \clockworkmod folder.
I bought the device with 4.4.2 on it and followed the guides after reading up about the problems etc but TWRP 2.7.0.0 had a lot of reports that everything was working on it so went ahead with it

Ya that's strange because philz works great for me. Do you have a USB otg to try an external backup?
Sent from my XT1032 using Tapatalk
I got the phone booted again by following a guide and flashing a stock rom.
Installed Philz recovery again and still getting the backup error. it says: E: Error while backing up boot image!
So understandably i am now scared to flash another rom in case i get a boot loop again.
*update* Strangely i flashed TWRP via CWM, rebooted into TWRP 2.7.0.0 and performed a backup successfully.

Why dont you use Clockwork mod recovery for flashing Rom. I have flashed 10 Roms with that and all are backed up with out any problems. TWRP has no official support for moto g, and instead of all that why don't you try Cyanogenmod ?
(sorry if my english is not perfect)
Hello,
I have exactly the same problem with my XT1032.
Bootloader unlocked, CWM (6.0.4.7) successfully installed and backup done with no issues.
But custom roms won't load...
CM11 is stuck at "bootloader unlocked warning screen" and SlimKat is stuck at slimkat logo.
I never had such problems on my Nexus..
Please help me, I don't know what's going on

Same here. It may be possible to downgrade to 4.3 (see here), but would it then be possible to flash a 4.4.2-based custom ROM ? I'm not sure.
Heres the steps I took.
*******Before device was stuck at bootloop*******
1. Bought phone (XT1032)
2. unlocked boot loader
3. Rooted
4. Flashed Philz Recovery (wouldn't backup rom)
5. Flashed TWRP and CWM with same issue.
6. Flashed 2 ROMs to try it (TweakyOne + C-Rom, Both wouldn't boot. and tried on all recoveries.
********Steps after being stuck at bootloop*******
1. Followed this amazing guide here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laU6NQ0LxR0)
2. Set up the stock ROM again
3. Flashed TWRP 2.7.0.0 via Fastboot
4. Backup worked successfully
5. installed CM11 and setup successfully
6. installed Lego rom just to assure myself (currently running this ROM)
I know this is no solution at all but just wanted to share my steps to see what maybe fixed my phone. possibly the stock 4.2.2 rom I flashed was the solution. Maybe the original factory ROM that came on the phone was the issue?

[Q] MultiROM secondary ROM boot loop

I had stock 5.0 and installed MultiROM via fastboot. And after that I tested out xTraSmooth 3.1 on the secondary ROM so I pretty much liked it so I said **** it, why not make it the primary. So I formatted the device completely secondary and primary and all. And I copied the zip files and flashed them as primary. I also flashed MultiROM v30 as when I went to advanced it said MultiROM wasn't installed or something like that. Anyway, I wanted to test some more ROMs now, I ended up with a bootloop or updater binary error.
So, I said I'll test it on the same ROM I had tested before, which is now my primary one. So I flashed another xTraSmooth as secondary, it flashed without a problem but still I got a boot loop. So, I tried installing the modified TWRP again using fastboot, flashing MultiROM again and flashing the ROM again but still. I got a bootloop. I even flashed a nightly kernel from frnaco after that and still a bootloop. What should be done? Or is this some new problem with MultiROM?
Bump

That sounds very strange to me! I'd try a fresh install using the MultiROM Manager Android App. Make sure that the status displayed in the app does NOT say Kernel: doesn't have kexec-hardboot patch! (see Installation section in the first post of the MultiROM thread).

Did you try the newest version of xTraSmooth (3.3)? I had a quite similar situation with AICP for Nexus 7. In fact, at first it never got past the boot animation and then "suddenly", with a newer version, things were fine.
You may also want to try installing another ROM as secondary, just to make sure your current MultiROM installation works as it should.

Custom ROM Issue... Stuck Booting...

Hey androids, I submitted this question as a reply to the guide thread already earlier... just thought it might get noticed in this forum alittle quicker... any help would be appreciated
I'm working on a recalled tablet that I rooted to keep using, and up until recently the ROM i had installed on it worked famously (bliss pop with android 5.1.1). Now, I was having some issues with it and thought "Well, i'll try out a different rom!"
So, I already had root (obviously) and I had already successfully installed a rom to this tablet... Using TWRP (both the 2.8.x.x I used previously and the newest one available for the shield) I have backed up, wiped, and flashed the images to 3 different roms + gapps for the appropriate versions...
first, I was going an issue with it mounting the \data partition so it wouldn't flash anything... then I repaired and rewiped the partitions, and got (what appeared to me in the logs) a clean and successful install of the roms. Each time I successfully flashed a ROM and GAPPs zips I would go to boot the ROM and my table would sit on the "NVIDIA" boot screen forever, never advancing to boot the ROMs.
I was worried that I had made a mistake and bricked the thing (though, it's been on borrowed time anyways being a recalled tablet). But I was able to force shutdown the tablet and reboot it into TWRP for another try. Each time I cleared the previous flash, wiped the cache and system partitions, and would get another clean install... but each time, it would get stuck on that same boot screen....
Anyone have any suggestions? thoughts? ideas? fixes? answers?.... anything? lol
Thanks folks!
Assuming you are trying to flash MM custom roms: You need the MM bootloader.

Is the newest TWRP *not* a MM bootloader?
TWRP is a recovery. A bootloader is a bootloader.
This is covered in every rom thread that updated from L to M.

I'll re-look, the guides i've read have only covered flashing TWRP, then using them to flash the ROM and GAPPs... Which is what I did the first time I rooted it and put on a custom ROM... though maybe I didn't delete the original bootloader the first time and did so accidentally this time?
Thanks for the heads up though people, we'll see if I can straighten it out now that I know what I'm looking for

Ok, so I've downloaded the shield recovery zip, flashed the boot.img to the boot... nothing, then I read on one of the guides here that the "blob.img" is the bootloader... but the zip has a blob, without the .img
So I then attempted to add .img, and flash it to "boot" in TWRP, and there was an error, saying the file is too large...
do you (or someone else) know where to find a guide on where to find/how to flash a MM bootloader?
thanks
Ok, so I found guide with links to the latest firmware update; I flashed it, rebooted, and now I've gotta past the "Nvidia" boot screen into the Bliss boot screen... It's been here for a couple minutes now, gonna give it alittle bit and then try to install the other ROM I had tried.

Can i use custom rom to fix bootloop?

My phone just got into bootloop. I have tried several fixes and managed to install TWRP. Most of the fixes I have tried doesn't work.
I will try to boot by Heating it up so much (it was one of the fixes). But can i use custom roms? instead of modified roms
If the bootloop is due to a failed memory chip, nothing is going to help.
When you say bootloop, you mean it is stuck on one particular and won't proceed?
Have you tried installing a stock KK ROM?
