Anyone have recommendations for a budget earbud/IEM to take advantage of the DAC?
My old Skullkandy Ink'd 2 earbuds sounded good on my old phone but did not sound as good on the V30 regardless of enabling the Hi-Fi Quad DAC.
I'm mostly using this throughout my work day so can't be overhead/over-ear and budget under $50 so it wouldn't hurt as much if damaged or loss.
I wouldn't consider myself an audiophile but I like the immersive soundscape with clear separation in all frequencies.
I guess also really interested to see what others are using that takes advantage of the Quad DAC.

Your problem is those earbuds only have "Impedance: 16 Ohms", according to all the specs websites I see.
According to the audiophiles who have experimented, there's three ways to improve the DAC response on the LG V30:
1) external adapter/connector -- which fakes it into boosting audio somewhat ($1 - $10).
This adapter would have no extra impedance, but just by being "external" it makes the DAC boost the audio, sound better. This will NOT trigger the super-duper High Impedance Mode (50+ ohms for admission), but still will improve your current earbuds.

However, you have to attach it to the phone and earbuds in a 2-step process for the trick to work. See post link below.
2) high-impedance earbuds (50 ohms or more) which unleash the beast.
But those are usually expensive.
3) You CAN buy a high-impedance connector (75 ohms - $10) to attach to your earbuds -- to convert them in 50+ ohms impedance earbuds.
These 75 ohm connectors do not need the "2-step" trick. The impedance rating alone should trigger the High Impedance Mode of the quad DAC, not by being an "external" connector. However, but MAKE SURE your earbuds can handle that kind of power. Otherwise, just buy non-impedance connector to boost audio level via the 2-step trick.
I have a pair of "premium" 32ohm earbuds, which with one of these impedance connectors will trigger the 50+ ohms High Impedance Mode of the LG V30 quad DAC. Or should. I've ordered one from Canada, but hasn't arrived yet.
See more here. It's sort of a wrap-up of the discussion up to that point:

Soundmagic make reasonably priced high impedance units. I have this one:

I have a pair and feel they are very good.
Final E2000 is a 16 Ohm headphone only.
So I went ahead and ordered two pairs of IEM, which might have brought me over the budget a bit.
1. KEF M100 Hi-Fi $31+ from Newegg. It felt like a great deal since it was listed for $149 on Amazon and other retailers. However, when researching, it sounded like they changed specs a bit after 2015. There were reviews in 2015 with specs about them with 50+-ohms impedance but KEF website has them listed at 16+- ohms currently. Much lower impedance.
2. HiFiMan RE400a $49 from Amazon. I guess this is there new price point but still listed for $79 on manufacturers site. This one has an impedance spec of 32+- ohms.
I feel both are trusted brands in the industry so will give it a shot. Still may try those adapters to see if it helps. I may return one, or both, and just opt for something in the sub $100 since I'm already at that price point. Will give it a couple of weeks of testing to see what will work around the office with ease of use, comfort, portability, etc...
In the end, I might just go back to square one, with the Skullkandy, just to get by the work day...

I bought some Sony XBA-N3AP and I must say that they sound better than the Shure SE535 I've tested previously. Pretty "budget" for really premium sound.

+1 for the HifiMan re400. Not hi res buds, but if you're using Spotify or lower res than FLAC then these are brilliant. Very balanced with wide soundstage.
I recently got these for Christmas and they sound really good, and are cheap.

I am so happy I am not the only one enjoying this awesome set up , I am hunting out new music , finding my old favourites in high quality files , I’ve literally fallen in love with music again ?
I have 1more triple driver that is amazing compared to the delivered B&O. You can enjoy the HiRes for less than 100$
I don't recommend the RHA T10 that have very bad sound.
High Impedance mode
@ChazzMatt . I have experienced the High impedance mode on the LG V30 using the Bose QC25(without the impedance adapter). One word "Mind Blown". I have ordered SoundMagic E80c without a second thought(positive about triggering the HIM). Will receive them tomorrow.

Completely agree. I have the 1more triples with Bose Stayhear+ tips AND the 1 more quads with Bose Stayhear+ tips. Love them both, but I would give the nod to the triples. For the $90 I paid, they are outstanding. Got the quads for $150 and they're great, but for me the triples are plenty. I carry the trips, use the quads with my laptop.

These are pretty much identical knock-offs https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071JK2ND6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
They can be used to determine the size (it's a set of three, S/M/L). If you want the genuine tips you can get the white\clear on Amazon also, but I ordered from Bose because you get 2 pair (need to know your size) for $10 shipped and I wanted smoke (black-ish):

Not sure if you have these buds, but they come with a ton of tips, different sizes, silicone and comfort foam. I just could not get a good fit for me, the tips made all the difference in the world. I must have weird ears.

I'm looking for a good quality pair of ear buds for the G2 that has ff and rew buttons, plus a button to take/ end a call. Budget is around $50. Anyone have any recommendations?
After a few weeks of searching I gave up and got the Sony Ericsson MW600 Bluetooth handsfree. I exchanged the standard bullets (simply a matter of taste) for my trusty old Pionneers. Build and sound quality are great, battery life also, plus you can pair it with 3 devices and select to which you want to connect or simply use it as a standalone FM radio receiver

Yo does your volume / mic work on that? I have the Aviator headphones from Skullcandy, and it doesn't control Volume / Mic on my phone. Works on an iPod, but not this phone. I'm on the latest build of CM7 (and have tried all of them, same thing). I haven't tried the stock ROM though.
Problems have been reported from multiple G2's about the ear buds mic/volume up down not working...me included - design flaw in the 3.5 jack on our phones...bluetooth is the way to go

Dear pmatang and slapshot30,
Would you mind writing the exact model of Bose, respectively Skullcandy hadphones with volume and media control (ff, play/pause, rew) that you own and know to work with the G2/Desire Z?
If you didn't even bother to read the first post, do the world a favour and don't reply at all. Silence is often better than a crappy answer.

I have the Bose MIE2i model.
http://www.bose.com/controller?url=/shop_online/headphones/mobile_solutions/index.jsp
The i model comes with added iPod controls over the normal MIE2. As it is made specifically for the iPod the controls don't work fully.
The middle button works for play/pause/skip track. The skip track is a double press of the middle button. The actual buttons for skip and rewind don't work.
These also double as a handsfree kit for taking calls which works fine with DZ.
It may be possible to have the skip and rewind buttons fully working depending on the ROMs you run or if there is an app for it. Honestly I don't know. I am currently writing my experience of using these earphones on the Virtuous sense ROM and the CM6 ROM.
Hope that helps.
EDIT - Take your phone into a Bose store and ask for a demo. They'll happily let you test them out first. Also, some stores do a promotion where you can trade any set of earphones for a discount off your purchase. Even a $1 headphone.
Now that's a great response
I actually skipped over that model (and all other "made for iPhone" headphones, for that matter) because I read that the skip buttons don't work.

I read the first post. It clearly states the OP wants GOOD, QUALITY earphones. Bose and Skullcandy (Monster too, for the record) are NOT quality. They live off of marketing and all of you are falling victim to it. All of their items are overpriced.
Here, I'll give some QUALITY recommendations...
Sennheiser, Klipsch, Denon, Audio Technica, and many more. These brands actually give you what you pay for. If you want, I can find some with the controls you need to work with the phone, or you could just become a member at this site and ask around, they know what they're talking about. This is probably the most popular headphone/earphone forum. (Oh, and don't talk about Bose/Monster/Skullcandy, you will get flamed beyond belief)

You stated some nice brand names, that said, Bose headphones aren't half bad and the sound quality in their earphones aren't amazing but they beat out any other brand in terms of comfort; especially if you don't enjoy having the earbuds shoved into your ear canal.
Now, anyone can spout out brand names, but did you really respond to the OP's question? Of the brand names you named, which models are compatible with the DZ?
Lots of people just seem to jump onto the Bose and Beats hater bandwagon without any reason to back it up; you sir, seem like one of them.
Don't get so defensive when someone responded to your post with a different opinion to yours. Your first post WAS pointless.
On another note, I use the Bose MIE2 (not the iPod version) and I can say that the sound quality isn't anywhere near what the price tag suggests. However, they're unbelievably comfortable and if you're a runner, they do not budge or fall out when you're running.
I originally had the iPod version but the buttons are unresponsive so I exchanged them for the non-iPod version where it gives you only 1 button but you can pause, play, skip and take/end calls. Again, rewinding doesn't work.
One thing to know about the Bose earphones is that you can hear EVERYTHING around you (this is because they do not have active noise cancellation and they are not "in-ear"). While I find that a perk because I'd rather not get hit by a car, I can see why some people may not like this.
And if you want noise cancellation, then there's a whole other set of earphones to look into.

I will agree with you, my first post didn't have much point, just trying to be humorous. Bose do have okay SQ (better than Monster and Skullcandy), but that's about it, still overpriced. I didn't just "jump" on the bandwagon, I know more about audio products than the average person. I've got some pretty darn expensive headphones and IEM's that beat the heck out of those three overpriced brands. You say lots of people jump on that band wagon?? Yea right, I see Beats everywhere I go, there are only a select few who know they're overpriced.
I don't daddle much into earphones with controls, but like I stated, I will find some if you'd really like me to. Or you could just join head-fi and ask yourself, there are TONS of members there willing to help noobs. I know for a fact Sennheiser has a great low-end selection (sub $50).
You are asking a bit too much with telling me to spit out some products that will for sure work with the DZ. It's not like other electronics where you can just go and test them out at some store. Audio products involve a lot of buying and returning to test things out. There is no way to know for sure unless someone else with the same exact phone has tried it, which isn't that easy at all.
Maybe we could look into finding a control that plugs into the phone, and you plug the earphones into that control (2 parts). They had something like that for the PSP. If we could find one that could work for the DZ, then it would be possible to use much better earphones with it.
EDIT: Found some nice ones IF you can extend your price point a tiny bit. These are the Klipsch Image S4i. I have the regular ones without the controls. These can be found as low as $60. Maybe they will work... Here is a diagram of the functioning.

Ah, very nice link. They are saying to go with the Klipsch S2M for Android. They have controls, but I am unclear as to how many and which ones. This is an excellent choice for anyone wanting good earphones. Klipsch is a fantastic brand, I own the S4 and they are highly regarded among audio enthusiasts at that price point.
EDIT: Answer/End/Mute are the only controls with those :\

Ah, so you weren't just trolling (I thought you were). Should've posted something like this before!
Glad we kept it name-calling free.
Agreed on the Bose note and definitely agree on SkullCandy and DreBeats.
On a side note, what sounds good to one person may not sound good to another. Ie. The bose MIE's alot of people say they sound great, but IMO theyre mediocre at best, the only reason I kept them was because theyre comfortable and do not budge even when running or something.
Best piece of advice anyone can give you is a general direction to go in and you have to buy them (or demo if you can) and see if you like them.

Yes, I've seen those ety's before but didn't recommend them because of the high price compared to your budget. Great brand to go with though, if you can stretch your budget I'd go for it. Just make sure where ever you buy them from has a good return policy, you just never know with audio products.

I paid around * 17.00 * euros for it and it seems that it's even cheaper right now
Great sound - great value for money !
When posting also specify the specs, like Sensitivity, frequency response, impendance, input power, etc etc. , meaning not only name and price !

And therein lies the difficulty.
My perception is that there are people who like music, but aren't "into" spending a lot on it. They 'like' good music, but like their pocketbook more--relatively. They want to keep spending in the $20-$40 general area.
Then there are people willing to spend a little more, say up to $100 area to get a big step up in perfotmance.
Then there are those *I* define as serious music people who will spend what, to me, is a LOT of money on the reproducer ($150 into multiple hundreds).
Here, we can talk to ALL of these groups, but I suspect more interest from the lower groups--people for whom cost is a pretty significant factor, to a big degree or to some degree.

I understand what you're saying, but I assumed this was a high value/low budget thread.
Besides, if you're listening to MP3s or streaming audio/video through your phone's headphone jack, "better" headphones may not necessarily provide a better experience. It's just as likely that they'll point out the limitations of the encoded file.
If you're listening to audiophile quality FLACs, on the other head, I suppose the sky's the limit.

Agreed; thus I said, "...but I suspect more interest from the lower groups."
Well, the essence of this thread , to find the best value earphone, which is a difficult task, specially on this budget, but not impossible....
But even if you are willing and CAN afford to pay 150 euro (and more) for a headset, are you sure, that this or that headset is better than the one I found?
Hard to say, but we can at least compare the specs:
Denon AH-C710
Frequency Response 5-25,000 Hz
Sensitivity 110 dB
Impedance 16 Ohms
Max Input Power: 250mW
AKG K430
Impendance : 32 ohm
Sensitivity : 125 dB/V
Max input power : 30 mW
Frequency response : 12Hz - 28kHz
So while the more expensive Denon got just a little wider frequency response, the AKG got higher sensitivity/Impedance, but once again, quite a good frequency response for a headphone with that price !
And the K430, also comes with a case. extra adapter and got a volume slider!
So the practical question I have for you is:
Based on specs, is it really worthwhile to spend 2 or 3 times more on the Denon C710 when you have the AKG K430 out there?
«»
Edit: Just found out that the Denon got a much higher max input power...
But what is the mW power of our sgs devices?

Oooo...I like having a volume control.
Brainwavz M2 from mp4nation [50$] is a really good one..
Give it a try.
For headset (must include a mic!) a contender would be:
Sennheiser MM-50 iP . c. $32-40 (depending on store) (no direct linking)
http://www.google.com/search?complete=0&as_qdr=all&num=20&q=sennheiser+mm50
Review:
Link removed as per forum rules (?). See a true (non-advertising) review of MM-50i at headphoneinfo.com.
However, as it is an iPhone model, it requires a *working* adapter. The following '3.5mm TRRS to 3.5 TRRS Adapter for Select Phones' from Meelec.com works:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12549786&postcount=45
Works also with MM 70 iP model from Sennheiser: Answer button, headphones and microphone. Doesn't work with volume +/- controls (they do nothing).
The cheap $0.99 eBay Nokia adapters do NOT work (yes, I've tried).
Koss Portapro
I'm quite surprised no ones mentioned these.
Price: $33.33 (I know you guys are lazy but do the math yourself )
Frequency Response: 15-25,000 Hz
Impedance: 60 ohms
Sensitivity: 101 dB SPL
I've had these for over a year and I must say these headphones are excellent especially when considering the price. not to mention it comes with a no questions asked lifetime warranty (just pay for shipping). If these things broke or got stolen, I'd happily go out and buy another pair.
For the hardcore audiophile on the budget (a paradox) I recommend these for use at home when not on the move:
Grado sr60i
Price:$79.00
Sensitivity: 98 dB/mV
Impedance @ 1kHz: 32
These are quite large though so I really wouldnt recommend wearing them while walking/running. On the other hand its probably the best sound you can get within that price range
This is my first post so i cant seem to include pics
Since the Nexus 6P comes without headphones, I was wondering which headphones everyone is using, and how much did it cost them? Would you recommend them to others? If you have tried more than once pair of headphones (wired or wireless) which one would you recommend?
I'm using the XBA-A3's at work and on the go: http://amzn.com/B00FJISZ28 They use a hybrid driver - pairing both a dynamic driver with two balanced armature drivers to create a fantastic sound.
I wear them about 6 hours per work day. They are by far the best sounding headphones I own. That's saying something, as I also own Sennheiser HD 650's, AudioTechnica ath-m50x, Shure SRH-840, Blue MoFi's, and Vmoda Crossfades which I use with my laptop and various portable/desktop headphone amps/dacs.
In searching for the best earbuds, I purchased and returned the RHA t20i, Shure 425s, Sennheiser Momentums, B&W C5s, and Audio-Technica ATH-CKR10... none of which were bad by any stretch of the imagination. The Audio Technica CKR10s are the closest to the XBA-A3, in my opinion. The XBA-A3's have an edge in mid and high end clarity in my comparisons. Balanced armatures for the win. I also prefer the over-ear wire guide and detachable cables. Also, most of those listed above don't have an in-line mic, which the Sony's do have. So, the A3's won, and I'm loving them daily.

Sennheiser HD800's with a chord Hugo amplifier.
~$2200 and sounds wonderful. Would recommend it any day.
I've always used my Audio Technica ATH-ESW9 for whenever I'm away from my T1 at home. They're around $200 new and I got mine for $120 like new off of Amazon a couple years ago. One thing I've always like is the sound signature of the ESW9 deviates from the rest of the Audio Technica offerings, and it's an absolute joy for listening to acoustic instruments. Brownie points for using real wood too. Along with the durable lambskin leather, part of the reason why I prefer them for portable use, the ESW9 provide decent isolation without muting your surroundings when they're properly seated on your ears. Call me paranoid, but too much isolation is why I don't use earbuds; I see it as a hazard.
LG HBS-810, paid about $85, plus $15 for some comply foam tips. Can't complain.

JVC FX850s, though the phone's output & internal DAC makes them sound like crap (coming from Note 4). V4A doesn't make it much better. Placed an order for a cheap portable DAC, FiiO K1.

Great to hear, fan of the bass myself... thanks for the post..
They're currently somewhere between Japan and Manchester
I'm using Sony MDR-EX650 Earphones with Brass Housing, Smartphone Mic and Control. By far the best in ear headphones I've ever bought, and I'm really hard to please when it comes to sound quality. The sounds take is incredibly open for in ear headphones. I can hardly feel them in my ears, the bass Is punchy without making the sound muddy. Fantastic, really glad I bought the 6p, and these headphones. Got them for £60 but can get them for around £40 online
Bose QC 20's ("Samsung Model" which is their Android version) All of the buttons work (vol+,-, play/pause) and it has ANC with an 'active button'. The active mode gives you mild noise canceling with enhanced speaking level tones for running/working out. I paid $300 for them this past summer and I don't regret it at all. I own 5 pairs of Bose headphones total (QC 20's, Freestyle, SiE 2's, OE 2's and the True Sound over ear ones)
Been using the latest xiaomi in ear pro these past two weeks, it is a hybrid : 1ba and 1 dynamic. Bass seem overpowered (i'm not a basshead), mid a bit high and buttons (mic n vol) works with my music player (black player ex), build quality is great for the price. I would recommend this Xiaomi (i got it for around $28 ) for 'on the go' earphones. For 'serious listening' i use my red Shure 535LE with black oyaide cable.
I'm rocking a V-Moda Crossfade LP2 - picked them up as open box off eBay for $99 and added the XL foam ear pads from V-Moda, also an eBay purchase. They sound ridiculously good, and the ear pads make these comfy af. The inline remote does NOT work though, but it worked on a Lumia - go figure, as Apple and MS have a patent deal. >.> Get with it Google! I miss pausing my music or summoning Cortana with the Play/Pause button on the cable.

I've got a few hooked up for different purposes, Grado SR325i are my hands down favorite for sound but unless I'm sitting still in a quiet room they're not so wonderful.
Realistically though, my MPOW Cheetah Blueetooth get the most play time. $16 on sale. They don't sound anywhere as nice as my RE0's (which I bought so long ago I don't remember the price, definitely more than $16 though), but the whole wireless headphone thing is just so darn practical and the battery life is good enough that I would definitely recommend them.
I've been using Audio-Technica M50x's ($133) around the house and Klipsch S4's ($99) or Jbuds ($35) while out and about. Very happy with all of them.
I use some jbl wireless in ears, bose qc 20s, and sennheiser momentum in ears.
Beats PowerBeats2 Bluetooth for cardio. Paid $100 on Black Friday. I think at $100, its pretty good. Battery life is amazing. Sound is decent. But I wouldn't pay full price for them.
Shure SE215 for everything else. Paid $100 for them.
Bose QC15 for flights which I haven't traveled much lately so its not used ah much. Forgot how much I paid. Maybe $300ish.
I also have Bose IE2, Audio Technician M50 but those are rarely used.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
For wireless listening, I use a pair of Jaybird Bluebuds X. They work ver well and sound pretty good.
For wired listening, I have a pair of Klipsch S4is that I use when the BlueBuds are out of battery, and mostly for calls. My favorite pair are the Vmoda Crossfade LP2. The Vmoda give me the best sound out of all my headphones, but I don't like wearing them for extended periods of time. The Vmoda inline controller button does not work on the 6P by the way, and the same applies to many stock headphones for some reason.
I backed The Dash on Kickstarter two years ago and it looks like I should finally be getting mine in the next month or two. I'm very excited to get them to replace the BlueBuds, but Bluetooth sound quality will never match wired units.

Unless you are an audiophile, I will recommend the Mpow Wolverine: http://amzn.com/B017I50T0K. They are cheap and the sound is excellent in my opinion. Additionally, they work perfectly with "Ok Google" commands, I mean detecting the "OK Google", which I have found to be inconsistent with other wireless or wired headphones. The microphone is on the volume control bar, so it is closer to your face and phone calls are really clear.
I also own the Mpow Swift: http://amzn.com/B00PW3B194, which I bought first. These are not as good, the sound is not the best in my opinion. I use them at work to listen to music and news podcast, so I don't need real good sound, as I keep the volume very low. The microphone in this one is on the right-ear headphone, so people have trouble hearing me if it is windy.
PS: No, I don't work for Mpow, I bought them because I found them on sale, so I paid $9.99 for each one.
Hey guys
Just upgraded from s7 edge to this phone. I've buy lg v20 Verizon version, so after purchase I start to search b&o earphones which comes with box, so yesterday I get that one, so after 1 day using, I can say for sure this is not top level headphones. It sounds like 10€ headphones. Its not loud but have some good quality. So if someone know how to improve and upgrade sound please send some instructions
I agree with you to the fullest they were absolute terrible sounding to my ears too. Might sound cliche but my gf's apple earpods from same pricerange are much better
You could install a app with a equalizer like poweramp to color and adjust the sound you want. But soundquality wise they are not decent imo
I think V20's QDAC is better suited with high-impedance headphones and good quality audio files. at least, it needs 50 ohms and 300kbps mp3 files. FLAC format is the best. I bought a Marshall Major II (non-bluetooth) headphone and buy few FLAC files. The quality is superb.

High impedance has no effect on audio quality. 3k earphones that are 16ohms are the best out there.
I swear some people just don't understand what ohms law is.....
Sent from my LG V20 using XDA Labs
Well the "impedance" is a choice of the company when they designed the headset. in the past most classic high fedility headphones were high impedance (300 - 600 ohm) because they were driven by dedicated big amps.
"Impedance" itself whether it's high or not should not be a parameter it would sound good or bad.
The best modern headphones have lower impedance now and this is also choice of market because most need to be driven by a small dac or smartphone
Low impedance doesn't mean easy to drive either, some headphones really need a proper dac as fuel

Oh yes. High impedance has no effect on MP3 audio quality. I fully agreed. Just buy (or download) an FLAC audio and compare listening to it. You'll know the truth. Otherwise, those people who bought high impedance HPs for very expensive price are just fools.

It seems that LG have just used the B&O brand on some of their own rubbish earphones. You can buy them in HK for less than $10. When I turn on the Hifi DAC sound quality in these barely changes but when I use my standard earphones (LH Labs) the sound comes alive with the HiFi DAC - with loads more detail. Fantastic experience but bin the so-called pretend B&O earphones.

I went through the same thing when I bought my V20 last year. The B&O earbuds totally suck.
You might want to buy a pair of the Marshalls as well as the Audio Technicas. The Marshall Major Bluetooth II are a couple of generations old now and quite cheap on Amazon. They're small and flexible. You can stretch them to fit your head perfectly. I can wear mine for hours without pain. The Audio Technicas are huge and better for listening at home.
Also, the Marshalls are more than 50 ohms. I agree with the other posters - high impedance has nothing to do with sound quality. However, with the V20 you need more than 50 ohms to kick in the quad dac. I believe that I took a pass on the Audio Technicas because they aren't 50 ohms. The Marshalls will probably survive out in the world a lot better too. I just toss mine in a bag without a case a lot of the time and they're fine.
I really didn't think that I would like those headphones as much as I do. I don't use the bluetooth connection very often but it's nice to have it anyways.
Hope you enjoy your V20. This phone is going to be my daily driver until it won't turn on anymore. I just love it.
I got the H3's for free and used them as a spare pair. Never abused them but they just fell apart. Quality on them is atrocious for a supposedly $150 retail pair of headphones. I checked out their rating with "fakespot" on amazon which analyzes for likely fake reviews and they got a rating of an F with only 23.7% reliable reviews. ha.
Fakespot
Two righties???
I got mine with my lg v20 and they were defective. Literally 2 right earbuds. Both printed "R".... Is it possible that the real B&O could make such a crazy mistake??
be glad you even got headphones. Some of us didn't get them.
Just wanted to share what I feel is a great addition to the OP6 or other phones lacking a proper DAC. When I orderd my OP6 I didn't expect to like it as much as I do and had myself convinced I would probably be sending it back. To my surprise I actually love the device except for the overall size ( still have and prefer my 5" Pixel in this regard) and the headphone audio quality. While it was nice enough for OP to include the headphone jack, what comes out is pretty much garbage. I held on to my LG V20 for so long just for the DAC. Well I decided to take a chance and order a USB-C hi-res 24bit/192kHz DAC. The difference is nothing short of amazing when switching between the 2 outputs during the same song. While the total max volume is higher than the OP analog jack I don't feel it's as loud as the V20 but I'm relying on memory since I sold it a few months back. I am testing with power hungry Sennheiser HD 6xx phones. AT $69 it's not cheap but I fell the price is well worth it if you value hi-res sound. You do have to toggle the OTG quick setting after plugging in. Just search Audiolab Portable Headphone Amplifier Audio Powered USB DAC but I'm sure there are others.

The dac included in the op6 is actually very decent, it is a qualcomm WCD9341 which supports up to pcm 384khz/32bit playback, 130db dynamic range and -109db of harmonic distortion. Honestly checks all the boxes for a decent dac -the v20's spec wise wasn't capable of a whole lot more. However the amplifier is weak, and with high impedance headphones the op6 won't perform well. With a low impedance pair of cans (which most are), the sound quality is very decent, and I am actually impressed. Coming from a v20 as well. Unless your driving some power hungry headphones I don't see why one would need this. Still, a pretty neat find though for those who need the extra voltage!
I have no issue with 3.5 audio jack and never had.
If oneplus decided to go in retarded way not to included audio jack in their next phone than it is going to be a HUGE deal breaker for me.

I am planning to buy the Sennheiser HD598 to go along with my OP6, but seeing the audio output I was planning to buy an external amp/DAC combo. Seeing here I'm wondering if I should just buy an amp instead of the DAC/amp combo as it will be significantly much cheaper. Let me know which is better - just an amp or an amp/DAC combo?

I'd say amplifier, but the HD598 is only 50ohm and try without at first, you might be happy without.
The Venture Electronics Odyssey is also a good USB-C DAC cable, works on OP6 with OTG, at just 20 bucks I'd say I do recommend it, not just for OP6, but also PCs and stuff. Using it also on my laptop with USB-A to USB-C and it works perfect.
The one plus 6 can't compete with the v series.
I seriously hope no one listens to the clowns stating that the one plus 6/t can compete with the v20 in quality. Do not listen to these people, they are either fanbois for one plus or they just don't know good, portable audio. Trust me, I have a one plus 6 and I had a v30. The v30 destroys the one plus 6t for music playback. I just couldn't stand the bad software on the LG V30. The one plus can't drive even mobile headphones properly. I miss LOADS of detail in my music, the volume is too low and because the headphones aren't being driven well they DON'T sound as good. I'm talking about mobile headphones here. I have an audio Technica msr7 and a Mitchell and Johnson GL1 and both sound terrible on the one plus 6t. The amp is weak and the DAC is ok. Consider yourself warned.

I seriously hope no one listens to the clowns stating that the one plus 6/t can compete with the v20 in quality. Do not listen to these people, they are either fanbois for one plus or they just don't know good, portable audio. Trust me, I have a one plus 6 and I had a v30. Yeah the stock sound on the OP6 headphone jack is not that great. It's just ok. I have a Soundblaster E5 that I use with my phone when I'm at home and it greatly increases the sound quality. I'm using Mitchell & Johnson JP1 headphones. They are only 32 Ohms, but they can reveal a mediocre DAC.
I'm not a hard core audiophile and I don't rely on my phone for my more serious audio listening, but I found the OP6 to be a step down in sound quality from my Nexus 6. V4A helps quite a bit, though. I'm curious to hear one of these DAC devices to see what kind of a difference it makes.

Define good please because the sellers site doesn't look that pro. No specs on anything and the product page is just to funny to read.

As in it's definately worth it's price, and even more. VE also produces Monk+ headphones that everyone knows about probably, and their sites do look bad and stuff, but the stuff they make is the real deal.
It's better than my laptop Legion Y530 and the OP6 with driving my AudioTechnica M-30X, has more power and is brighter than the headphone jack of OP6 I'd say. It's not a HIDIZS Sonata level of power or stuff but neither is the price
If you want real USB DAC, go for Dragonfly Black, for only 100 bucks.

Oke, that's some great points you making! I never heard of monk so this brand is all new to me so maybe that's why I was taking it seriously. I'll try to order 1 also after I repair my oneplus 6. Only thing holding me back now is that I was reading that maker had problems on his Huawei... And I'm typing this from my p20 Pro
Fanboi?

SD845 DAC can handle 32b/382kHz and has native support for DSD64 and DSD128. I'm playing 24b/192kHz and DSD128 albums with no issue at all. Quad DAC or not. Before you start screaming "Fanboi", you may want want to get off that high horse and look in the mirror. No problem pushing my WH900N headphones at all. Maybe you need to research a bit deeper get an app capable of using all the features of the OnePlus 6/6T. Oh, and buy better headphones.

I have no issue with 3.5 audio jack and never had.
If oneplus decided to go in retarded way not to included audio jack in their next phone than it is going to be a HUGE deal breaker for me.
Maybe you have garbage headphones, try to get some with good quality.

Hey, friendly message to say you can't say 'retarded' anymore.
I'm using Audioquest Dragonfly Red, it's really something when compared to internal DAC/AMP and when used with e.g. UAPP it performs nothing short of magical
I tested a USB-C to 3.5 mm headphone jack dongle and it doesn't work on the OnePlus 6 though it did on the 5T. Afaik these dongles even with a DAC don't work on the 6? Anyone else can confirm this or did it work for you?
Offered a Poco F1 to my wife 2 weeks ago. For fun i connected my favourites earphones KZ ZSR.
Surprise.
The F1 has much more punch than even Viper4 on my OP6.....
In fact, my old Oppo Find 7, just from box is better than than this OP6...and even with Viper4Sound, i notice some lack of strength on some details and a little "decontrol" ...
Camera and sound are the weaks points of OP6.
