Attached is a picture I took showing a problem I've been having with the camera for months now. In low to moderate light, I get these damn "scanlines" in pictures. In the camera app, vignette, etc.. all the same. If I'm not outside in the direct noon sunlight, I will get scanlines. This used to not be an issue until I flashed Synergyrom back on r55 I believe. Since then, I've flashed to CleanRom 5.5.1.... Not sure wtf happened but its annoying as hell.
Anyone else have this issue? Know how to fix?
I'm betting samsung made up for substandard camera hardware with software help you lose in those roms.
My doubleshot that launched over a year ago smokes my S3, especially in low light or tricky light shots. That phone was built with a heavy focus on the camera - high quality illuminated backlight sensor, actual optical zoom and so on.
The S3 wasn't built with the camera as the primary selling point - whereas my other phone very deliberately was.
For the overwhelming success at 'getting it right' for ...well, everything else about the S3, I can live with this compromise Samsung made.
My phone's front facing camera gives my face a blurry look while background seems to be finely focused. I know that this has been a problem for many s7 users too. I wonder what you guys think about that if i go to samsung service and have my front camera changed, can this problem possibly be solved ? Anyone tried this yet? , any results?
I think it may have to do with the fact that the camera is fixed focus, not autofocus like almost any other phone front camera. Having it replaced might not do much if the error is within the phone's configuration (in the NAND), but if Samsung will do it for free, why not try?
I really want a solution to this annoying detail. Looking for people who tried this as a solution and got any result on this particular problem.

i got a new camera in my s7 and its same...i told them it makes blurry images and they replaced the camera but its the same again...still blurry...background is fine but my face is smudged...even 5 year old nokia does it better... someone sad that sgs7 front camera is set to infinity mode ,but u cant change it so ur stuck with it....shame on Samsung....overall probably the best in android world ,specialy the back camera focus... and for the note Samsung will replace ur camera for free...THEY MUST!!! hope i helped u clarify things...cheers.
I have tested my Black Onyx S7 and havent had any issues with the internal 'selfie' camera.
Clear and sharp images of my grumbly mug at the office,, working on a weekend *grumble*
Might be worth checking with Samsung, see if they will swap it out and offer some feedback?
Thanks for the experience sharing. I know that many samsung s7 has this problem but what frustrates me is that i checked one other s7 in store and it was better in quality in terms of sharpness and details. So why not my phone have that quality. That is my problem
This is a flagship phone and s4 takes better selfies. Samsung should beware of this problem, should feel sorry and replace front cameras with better ones in services.

Just picked up my Pixel (in blue) and I'm coming from the S7 Edge.. Anyways, one of my closest buddies just proposed to his girlfriend yesterday.. when I was trying to capture a close image of her ring, the camera on the Pixel wouldn't focus. I had to pull the camera away from the ring about 10" before I could get it in focus, which ends up not being very detailed since it's so far away. My S7 edge was able to focus on close subjects up to about 3" or so and give nice bokkeh behind the subject. Anyone else having this issue with their pixel?
The closest I can get my phone to focus is about 4-5". Cameras aren't really good at doing that either way. I would recommend you back up to 10" or so and just use the zoom. I wouldn't call this an issue. Try and get your phone to focus on something else and really see if it won't do it (I doubt it). It was probably just the lighting or the situation. I easily got my phone to focus on my laptop close, but not hand. Just depends

Yeah I tried in brighter light today and the issue is still apparent. I'm guessing the camera just can't focus at a very close range like the Samsung could. Something to get used to I suppose

You could try OpenCamera. It has a macro mode.
It focuses the same if not better than my s7 did... Real close up shots with the s7 struggled to focus correctly as well.
I have the S7 flat and the Pixel, well the HTC 10 has the same issue as the Pixel, but yes, the S7 focuses brilliantly on close up objects but the pixel and the HTC 10 cannot get anywhere near as close. About 5" closer on S7.
On a side note, Jewellery is very difficult indeed to photo with all three phones, but Pixel and HTC 10, forget about it.

Yeah I was thinking the fact that it was jewelry might have been the issue but I tested in great lighting on standard objects and had the same issue as her ring. S7 has much better focus
I just found this out today... so wonder if anyone has any hints or tricks... ? I thought it was a skin that was on the glass when I first got the phone.. but after removing it i still had issues focusing on close objects..
I picked Google Pixel at the local store and BAM, has crappy minimum focusing distance, totally cannot compare with OnePlus 5 (or even OnePlus 2). I think the lens is fixed focus, is physically unable to focus closer. Just bad design, shame on you, Google!
It can focus closer (not as close as some phones), but it appears slightly bugged out.
The macro level achieved while it autofocuses during the launching of the camera application is slightly better sometimes than it is when you manually focus.

I appreciate that this is a specific Mix 2 question but couldnt see a mix 2 section yet to post in.
I recieved my Mix 2 about a week ago and my first impressions are that its a great phone - it does everything I want....... apart from when it comes to the cameras.
Firstly, the quality is pretty bad and a large step back from the oppo find 7 I am switching from. Both front and rear facing cameras fail to properly focus and always seem to take photos like there is a dirty lens, a sort of soft look, most obvious when photographing text, which just isnt sharp at all.
Secondly, it appears that the second rear facing camera doesn't do anything - is it even real?!? I believe its there for the optical zoom option, but even when you zoom in with the camera app, you can still cover this camera and it has no effect on the photo, therefore it is not used.
Any ideas on how to improve the picture quality? I presume its going to be a case of waiting for Doogee or some developers to take this device on to update the firmware......

It would be great... Camera performance is the main issue of the device. On the other hand, all the other features are quite well
Sorry to put this query here. Even i haven't got any place to right it down. I also have a same problem. Rear camera not working. Bought this phone specially for camera specifications. When will be the updates release to make the second rear camera work. Even 8 MP Nokia camera takes better picture than this 16 MP. And there are many bugs. Many apps crashes. And on YouTube I have seen many videos which shows many camera app showing 4k video recording option, but I think that was after update and I still haven't received it.i show that video 1 month back.
New update from company has improved the camera lil bit. But still not a usable one. And it keeps on hunting for focus in video.

Taking photos of static images is ok - maybe 6/10, if I use whatsapp to take a photo of anything it always appears very soft and a little blurred. If I try to take a photo of my cat.....no chance, the shutter is so slow, unless the object doesnt move at all you cant capture the image. I do like the phone and previously havent been bothered about camera specs, but that was when all my previous phones could take decent pictures. This might be the reason I get rid of this phone in a few months, it turns out a decent camera is a must for me - I was spoilt with my Oppo find 7, which had an incredible camera

+1 about camera perfrmance, i bought it to do a review and the camera is the worst thing in an otherwise decent phone. I did a comparison with the honor 7x, which has a much better camera at the same price.

I just bought a used S22 ultra wich is in mint condition. But i immediatly see that picture quality was ... BAD. Especially with the main lens. I got blurry areas accros the pic, strong artifacts and noise. I took the same pic with my old S20, and the quality is better !!
I just want to ask you what you think. Is there a problem or not?
I already did a factory reset... but it does not help.
Seriously, the quality is bad, the grass at the bottom and relatively blurry on the s22 while on the s20 the quality is consistent.
As well as the whole left side of the picture.

You said that it is used. Did you buy it from somebody directly or from a store?
What camera mode were you using? If you haven't already , download and install Expert RAW from the Galaxy Store.
I'll take a few and upload so we can compare.

I didn't know that the S22 ultra was only capable of capturing still subjects. However, I obviously compared several photographs and not only this one. This is an example.

Ok. Thank you for your photographs. I can still see that yours seem more homogeneous and consistent in terms of quality than mine.
I tried with the "pro" mode as well as with "Expert Raw", there is a minimal difference.
On the other hand, I should perhaps specify that I use an S22 ultra with the EXYNOS chip and not SNAPDRAGON. What about you?

At first glance, not really. If I zoom in enough, then yes.
The S22 Ultra is a really good phone. Ultimately, it is your decision whether you are happy with it. Keep in mind that Samsung sends out monthly updates. It's not uncommon for it to update the camera during these updates. I received updates for the Camera and Expert RAW apps. Also, Android 13 work OneUI 5 will be released later this year or early next year. That will come with camera improvements.
I have the S22 Ultra Snap Dragon. There are some differences with the cameras.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra might be the best camera phone around, but... which model are you exactly talking about? The Snapdragon US version actually captures different photos than the Exynos model in the rest of the world...

Straight high contrast lines instead of rocks
Faces with AF lock on closest eye. Skin tone should be true; leaves don't show this.

I would say maybe.
Most of the users would not care or see what you have identified, but I do agree it does not look ok for a >$1000 camera phone.
Some variation in lens quality or (mis)alignment is normal and it depends on you if you accept it or replace it. Be aware that this phone has 5 single cameras, so if you exchange the phone, one camera might be better, but others might be worse. On the other hand, it is the main camera, you identified it and now never will be happy, so I think you should take into account to try to exchange it.
Please share some more comparisons to make it more clear how significant this issue is.

My problem is a consistency problem, some areas are blurred and others are sharp. And I think that no update will change anything, it is a hardware problem.
I place here a photograph where this is particularly noticeable. I circle the sharp areas. Seriously, the problem is obvious, right?
I had to look few times to perceive the problem. As I'm not that interested, generally, in taking photos then to me the problem/issue is negligible. However, to you and anyone else I guess, who are more invested in taking photos then to them these imperfections are a problem

The image isn't showing shooting settings.
Again... this is not the way to test lene blur. Use solid subjects that can't be move by the wind.
A lense blur chart is better.
All lens have a blur pattern that varies throughout their aperture range if any. If you got a bad copy, return it.

Like I said previously, at first glance I didn't see a problem. If I look closely, then, yes. It depends on what you are planning to do with the images. Most people will probably not see, nor care about the noise and over processing (which is what is causing a lack of sharpness).
If you intend to make prints any larger than 4x6, then yes it could be a problem.
It is not a problem of the camera hardware. Both the Exynos and SD S22 Ultras have the same camera hardware. The area that you circled is an area of high contrast and lighting differences. As the article I posted stated, the Exynos powered phones struggle with dynamic range, low light areas, and tend to over process the images. That is exactly what is happening in the images you provided.
Because Exynos chips have different architecture, the software is different. It's not a problem of the camera hardware, it is a problem of how the software processes the data to render the photo. Samsung has to tweak its Camera and Expert RAW apps to work better with the Exynos processor.
If you shoot with Expert RAW or in Pro mode, then process the RAW file (.dng) using Lightroom or Gimp (which is free), you will probably see an improvement.
Ultimately, it is up to you whether you like the results you are getting from the camera. As the saying goes, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

I know that engineers don't set up cameras by taking nature shots. But I don't work at Samsung, I'm not an optician, I don't have all the tools to clearly establish the problem. I'm just trying to describe it to you.
Yes I think I have a defective phone, and it's not that easy to walk into a Samsung service center and tell them: replace this phone because it's defective!
And if I take pictures of grass trees it's because it's the easiest thing to take a picture of. This is what contains the most details to help define where the sharp and blurred areas are. But this problem has nothing to do with "motion blur"!

I bought this phone as the flagship phone from Samsung. They do a large advertising campaign around the performance of the camera. I take a lot of pictures and videos with my phones, and I have never encountered such poor quality. I know that the software part is not perfect and will get better with updates.
For me it is a hardware problem because I took the same pictures by rotating the phone 180° and the sharp and blurred areas were also rotated 180°, regardless of any other change in brightness or contrast. Moreover these "areas" are also present in the DNG files outside of any post processing.

Download and use a blur chart. You need flat target surface.
Where is the AF lockon at?!! That's important.
AF lock on dead center of the blur chart.
If you want accurate results, at least try to do it right. You need good documentation especially if sending it in for repair.
Photography is filled with learning curves, no one knows everything, but the more you know the better. Plenty of Pro Shooter that are sharing their hard earned craft skills for free on various websites.
If within it's return period, do it. Getting Samsung to repair it will be tedious... you are now experiencing some of this.

Did you read the article I posted about the differences between the SD and Exynos models? Camera orientation is irrelevant.
The camera hardware is not the problem. It is the processing after image capture that is causing the issues. The problems you point out are all in areas where there is significant lighting differences.
RAW image capture and post processing will reduce the issues; it won't completely alleviate them.
At any rate, if you are that dissatisfied with your phone, then return it.

If the affected areas rotate, when the hardware is rotated, the effect is caused by hardware. It might be more or less visible depending on sharping algorithms, but I would not wait for software updates or hope to get better lenses in a Snapdragon variant. It is some kind of lottery, usually the more the bigger the sensors are if the rest of the hardware keeps its size.

I am getting this kind of pic in nightmode on ultrawide lens in some cases, don't know what is the issue but it doesn't happen in normal low light shot or shot in expert raw app for the same scenes,can anyone help
