S8+ Roms 'scene' - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Hey guys, I am planning on getting the S8+ and Ive been looking around Xda for Roms for it but there are not a lot of them(stable neither) so my question is why are there not so many Roms and how is the future looking? I always root my phones and like to experiment, so should I buy it?
Thanks in advance, Ray

I live in Germany so which ever one is sold here (european)

If you like testing ROMs go with OnePlus 5T, i'm also thinking about switching.

OnePlus 5T is a good choice if you want to use developer apps and sideload mods, tweaks, roms.. etc.
I think if you go with a Exynos processor S8(international variant) you should be ok, as is it has been rooted fully already.

Check this post out for a list of different S8+ variants.

The Snapdragon processor hasn't been fully rooted like the Exynos version. So make sure you get the right model for your location.

Not that it matters in this case but your statement is not accurate. We do have root and it's stable. What we don't have is an unlocked bootloader which the Exynos version DOES have.

Quite so. If you didn't already do it you could head over to Cross Dev or the S8+ ROM forums and see what's available there.
Presently the vast majority are modded Touchwiz-based ROMs, which are quite excellent and offer great customization/battery life etc. If you are specifically keen on LOS-based (or other non-Touchwiz) ROMs there are very few under development, but it seems like quite a way to go yet.

[Firmware] G935UUEU4API3 Odin Files & Modded Odin

I know there's another thread for this but it's an absolute cluster F*** to make heads or tails of. I wanted to simplify things.
Simply download files, download modded Odin and put files in proper slots in Odin.
This is will give you stock U firmware with the latest PK1 modem. Root isn't what it used to be so I don't bother with it, please don't ask me for root files and instructions of this firmware.

Here's the modded Odin that I used. This is from the root thread and never once failed to flash anything on any device I've thrown at it: http://d-h.st/gsDA
Thank you for simplifying this process.
You're welcome. I'm here to help.... The other thread was too much of a mess!
Thanks joe3681, for all of your efforts.
Where online can I find a list of updates or a version history for the Samsung S7 Edge (T-mobile)?
so this will work with the latest update from November? and also what are the benefits of U firmware? I haven't been able to find any good info anywhere. i have rooted and flashed before lol i just haven't been in the game for a while
U firmware seems smoother, it's bloat free. Only real downside is no advanced messaging.

No, the U firmware is still the September security patch level. It's so much smoother/faster though. Especially rooted.
Thank you so much, this was obviously 100x easier to follow than the other thread.

Not so sure about that.. Seems laggy still compared to stock and gets hot easier even after cpu fixes

I followed the O.P. in the post root issues thread, doing nothing more and nothing less than what they said to do. No lag, normal temperature.
Thank you
OP thank you for the easy to follow instructions. I just bought my SM-G935T from ebay. I noticed some lag with the S7 Edge and of course all the Samsung and T-Mobile bloatware.
I flashed all of the files then did a system cache wipe. I have not noticed lag so far and now have 20 GB of the 32 GB free.
One question though. Where will the phone check for updates? Will it get updates from Samsung or T-Mobile?
TWRP help
.
I just got my T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy 7 Edge and have been doing a lot of reading here on XDA about this device. I have had all the galaxy's since Galaxy II.
I have rooted / custom recovery / custom ROM all of them. I know there basically is not much out yet as far as ROMS go for the S7e, but I would like to instal
TWRP and root the phone. I can not seem to get a straight answer as to how to do this exactly. Each "How-To" that I run into are a little bit different and scares
me a bit. If you could help me with any answers or links to my question(s) I would sure appreciate it.
1) I would like to odin into the phone the latest TWRP but I am not 100% sure which file to flash.
2) I would like to ROOT the phone if it is fairly safe at this point in development, but again I have heard of at least 2 different methods to do this.
3) Please advise on which file to use and/or method. My phone DOES connect up with my PC just fine via USB and I have ADB working also.

Spend more time reading around the forums before you try anything, but to answer your questions:
1) TWRP not possible on TMobile S7/S7E
2) Root is possible, see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-s7-edge/how-to/how-to-root-s7-edge-t3410470
make sure to read the entire thread and note the issues you may run into

@fl_gator_dad, it will check with Samsung. Mind you they dont update this as often as carrier versions release their incremental updates

Hello,
thank you for replying. I have been using TWRP on my past 6 phones. Is there some reason why
it wont work on this one ? I did a little more reading and found this

Also ... if TWRP isn't working then what custom recovery are you and all using ? Clockwork ...?

Well if you continue searching and reading some more, you will see that twrp only works on non locked bootloaders. Any carrier driven Samsung device has a locked bootloader and twrp will not work. We have the snapdragon and not the exynos. If you need to have twrp then you need to get an S7 edge Exynos version. There is no working custom recovery for the snapdragon version phones as of yet.

Thank you. That is a shame. I would think, incorrectly, that the unlocked GS7 firmware would be the baseline to build the carrier firmware.

Yeah, you'd think! The international is the one that gets everything first.
The unlocked firmware favors T-Mobile though offering T-Mobile customers features that other users don't get.

Is S10E can be root?

https://myphoneupdate.com/root-galaxy-s10e-unlock-bootloader-install-twrp-recovery/
Can we root S10E with this link? I just found it on the web.
Seems like they copy and paste this "manual" for each and every (Samsung?) phone. First point : find me a home-button on the S10(e) ...
I don't believe TWRP is available yet on the S10, nevertheless the S10+ recently got rooted https://www.xda-developers.com/exynos-samsung-galaxy-s10-rooted-magisk/
S10e won't be far off
does anyone have tried the patch boot image magisk method ?useless to try ?

Great work John Wu!
Why is it that I can't find any information on the status of the snapdragon version of the s10e root/bootloader unlock? I love this phone but I really need root. Does anyone know where I can find information or status updates?

From my understanding, if your model has the option to unlock the bootloader from developer options, then you can root. If you have a snapdragon varient, the only model that has the ability to unlock the bootloader is the SM-G9700 which is only sold in hong kong/china. I believe all Exynos models have the ability to unlock the bootloader, not sure though.
No one has rooted the snap dragon variant, but I'm sure it's possible. I just don't understand why there's no information or status updates on it.

Im pretty sure people are using the Exynos method on snapdragon variants that have the unlockable bootloader.

Don't be so sure about unlocking the US Snapdragon devices. There hasn't been a real root since the S7 series, the S8 root only works on some older bootloaders and crashing a lot, while the S9/S10 have nothing so far. Without an unlockable bootloader, it's extremely difficult to do anything. On the S7 it was possible via special engineering bootloaders, but that trick doesn't work on the S8/S9/S10 series coupled Samsung's new bootloader security measure via "VaultKeeper". Even on the Exynos versions it's a struggle to run Magisk, on every reboot you have to go through a bunch of steps to basically re-unlock the bootloader. It's basically game over rooting new US flagship Samsung devices, therefore you're better off with the international/global Exynos "F" versions.

SD bootloader cannot be unlocked, so no custom roms have been developed for the s10e with SD as far as I know.

Roms

Hi,
I want to get my bootloader unlocked for snapdragon version but I there are not many roms available.
I am looking for Lineage OS or Miuirom or pixel rom.
Any idea when we can get them.
Thanks

Snapdragon can't be rooted past bootloader 2. As far as roms go, there are only stock roms, but somewhere on the forum its mentioned about GSI roms, but VOLTE is broken because its always been a samsung issue and not much work being done. I'm sure there are a few people out there working on personal builds, but nothing released to the public that I've seen. (Aside from Exynos)

Question Why are there no AOSP/Pixel ROMs for the S22U (and Samsung phones in general ig)?

I've searched many places including XDA forums and various Telegram groups but nowhere did I find AOSP or Pixel ROMs. It's not that I *need* it but it did make me curious since it was a similar situation for my previous S8. There were very few considering the popularity of the phone.
So like what's the deal? Are all samsung phones lacking support for AOSP ROMs? Why so?

The S22 is Treble compliant, so you can run a AOSP GSI. See my guide here.

I've a S908E/DS and I really hate how OneUI looks and feels. I want to move to something more AOSP/PixelExperience but I don't see much info for the SD variant of this device. I've a few questions, if you don't mind:
1. When flashing a GSI Rom, I assume this will also trip Knox, if I encounter compatibility issues is there any way to use the exynos fixes for this device (I saw some low volume/auto brightness/fp issues in some comments but these have fixed for the exynos device).
2. Will SELinux change from Enforcing to Permissive (I don't believe it should, but it's better to get confirmation)

Yes. Flashing any custom or modified image will trip Knox.

By installing a GSI? No. I believe this is in the kernel, which is separate from the system image.
