How to tell diff b/w Verizon vs Google Pixel?

I lost my Play store Pixel and just received my Asusion replacement. How can i tell if its a Verizon or Play store version?
Im on 7.1 and build NDE63N.
Oem unlock is greyed out so its got me worried its a Verizon version.

Every Verizon phone I have owned loaded with a verizon splash screen.
Now as for the greyed out part, see if you are on the latest update. Some were having troubles with this if they weren't on the latest update. After updating, it turned this feature on

You need to be connected to the internet (wifi or cell) for the option to become available. If you're connected, and it's still greyed out. It's probably Verizon.

Hmmm......well good news is I rebooted phone and got a Google splash screen.
However, i didnt turn off auto updates in time and phone auto updated to 7.1.1.
Oem unlock still greyed out. And cuz of update, ship might have sailed on depixel8

Verizon pixels don't have a Verizon splash screen. They have to normal Google boot screen. I would figure it out and contact asurion if they gave you a Verizon pixel. They should be replacing the exact phone you had. If it is in fact a Verizon pixel you are screwed and can't unlock since it updated to 7.1.1
How do you even have insurance through verizon/asurion? I haven't had it in years but I thought you could only get that if you got the phone through verizon... Didn't think you could bring your own phone and add insurance?

Ok did a MEID check and I got this back as the model: G-2PW2100\
Looks as if the model number doesnt indicate much from here

Nope, that is incorrect as is evident in this example. Ive bought my phones off Ebay ever since Verizon did away with unlimited data plans. Ive had a few replacements since with no probs. The only requirement is your phone, regardless of where it was purchased, needs to show as being activated on your account. Asurion insures a ton of other carriers, not just VZW.

I'm assuming you're on Verizon, if so check your device's name on their website. It should say "NON VZW PIXEL" to indicate a Google store phone.

So other than the locked bootloader...is there any other difference between the Goog and Red versions. I got Verizon Pixel from Best Buy on $240 deal and have used exclusively on Tmobile. There is zero Verizon bloatware I can find.

No.
I'm sure you mean "factory unlockable bootloader" since even bought directly from Google the bootloader isn't unlocked until you check the option in Developer Settings and then use the fastboot command to unlock the bootloader, but yes, that's the only difference.

UPDATE:
So i just called up Asurian and told them I was having random reboot issues and they sent me a new VZW Pixel that was back on 7.1. I then went thru setup w/o SIM and no wifi and immediately depixel8'd it. All good now.

Carrier Unlocked vs. Verizon model?

When I purchased my Nexus 6P several years ago, I just swapped my Verizon SIM out of my Note 4 and went on my merry way. My Dad asked for a phone recommendation and I recommended the Pixel 2, thinking it would work the same way. Now I discover there's a carrier-unlocked version and a Verizon version. I don't want the Verizon bloatware on his phone and would rather not have to begin by deleting a bunch of apps (if Verizon will actually allow me to uninstall any apps [they love to install bloatware as system apps])as I'm the first step in his tech support hierarchy. I doubt I'll root his phone but I definitely don't want to have a locked bootloader which seems to be the Verizon standard.
If I get him the carrier-unlocked version and put his Verizon SIM card in, will it work on Evil Red's, I mean Big Red's network? I couldn't find any radio differentiation on Google's tech specs page.

It'll work they are all the same. Just don't put the sim in until after the setup process. From my understanding if you get the one from Verizon it will not install Verizon apps if you setup the phone without a sim in it. However you couldn't unlock the bootloader(there's a hack for it I believe).

Verizon installs the MyVerizon and go90 apps from the play store after setup if you have a vzw sim in it which can both be uninstalled. (Google store version does this too)
Only difference in versions is the verizon branded model comes with a sim in it and oem unlock is greyed out

I like the blue version, but it seems that Verizon model has it and not the carrier unlocked version. So the question is, if I will pick Verizon from google store, will the unit come carrier unlocked or it will be locked to Verizon?

It's carrier unlocked they all are. The only thing you can't unlock is the bootloader.

Oh, that isn't an issue for me. All I need the phone to be sim unlocked. I have heard that original pixel phone which was purchased form Verizon had also bootloader locked. What some users did, was that when they bought the phone new, removed Verizon sim, then turned of phone without the sim card and went through the set up. After that they were able to toggle OEM unlock. I don't know if it is the same for Pixel 2 phones.

From this point around it Sims that was fixed. You won't get the apps but the bootloader stays unlockable.

OEM Unlocking grayed out

Purchased from Google unlocked.
Running .30 version.
When I initially received the device I pulled the SIM from my OG pixel 1 and inserted and booted the 3. Set it up (running on AT&T) and used it. This morning I decided to root for theming only to notice it was grayed out. First thought was to factory reset and reboot with no SIM inserted. Did that. Still gray.
Am I missing something new?

Are you sure you received the google version phone and not the Verizon one? Did you notice if it was grayed out before you inserted your sim?

Wouldn't the fact that it takes my AT&T SIM mean it is the unlocked variant?
To answer though... I did not notice.
UPDATE: Called Google. The tier 1 guy said, "Per our engineering documentation this option is designated as disabled on the pixel 3 line."
I have requested an RMA even though I hope he was wrong and that someone can enlighten me before I send it back.

When my RMA is completed how will I specify that I don't want the Verizon variant?
As I'm sure you already know the store offers only three options and I verified that I chose the 'unlocked' option. Anything I can do to get what I need should I decide to reorder?
Also the store says the verizon variant comes with a SIM card which was not included in my packaging.
I'm really steamed at the moment... I do thank you for replying.

Again my friend, I'm just guessing. It could also be possible that from what I've read, the P3's were initially sim locked to Verizon only, even if you ordered the google version. It could be possible that when you installed your at&t sim, it locked the bootloader. Again, I'm just guessing.

Sure... I get that. I have been approved for an advanced RMA. Wasn't trying to seem harsh. The rep that gave me the advanced RMA did say that it SHOULD allow toggle. I'll be sure to attempt bootloader adjustments before inserting a SIM this round.

I don't think the Google version was sim locked to Verizon. That doesn't make sense at all. The device needs to connect to the internet in order for the switch to become active from what I understand. So if you don't put a sim in then you will need to connect to wifi. Something is amiss or we're not getting the full picture. Why would a Google bought Pixel anything not allow bootloader unlock? Even if you put in a Verizon sim it should still be active.

My thoughts exactly. The grayed out switch does say 'connect to the internet or contact your carrier' below the toggle. All while there's an LTE signal indicator on the status bar. I'm perplexed, truly. This isn't my first Android rodeo and I've never encountered this before.

I bought mine through Project Fi. I tried to unlock the boot loader first thing but the OEM unlock was greyed out. I had to activate the phone on the Project Fi Network before OEM unlock became available (I used the eSim). I wonder if they've linked the OEM unlocking switch to the network activation somehow. Has anyone bought a Network unlocked Pixel 3 from the Google Store, stuck a Verizon simcard in it, and then tried to unlock the bootloader?

I unlocked mine with a Verizon Sim in it. No problems at all. I also did the same with 3 different pixel 2's when the pixel 2 was first released. Again, not one problem with any of them. I see a lot of talk about the unlock possibly being tied to the SIM. It isn't. I know first hand.

I bought my 3xl carrier unlocked from Google. I inserted a vzw sim and activated my phone. After all that I tried to oem unlock and it is greyed out. My phone is running build PD1A.180720.31 and as far as I know it is the vzw build. Tried factory reset several times and still greyed out. Also tried sideloading .30 but it didn't work. Any help would be appreciated.

i bought the unlocked pixel 3 from google on launch, i was able to unlock the bootloader and flash images with no issue. I didnt have my verizon sim in it tho

.31 is the verizon variant.
.30 should be the unlocked variant.
I'm on the phone now... For a third time trying to get an RMA issued. Google support is horrific.
Issued me 2 RMA requests that had a link that was already used.

I was on the phone with them this afternoon and they are sending me a new phone. Hopefully it will be the .30

That's the scary thing for me. Mine is .30 and I was able to factory reset today and try a TMO SIM with the same result.
I processed my advance RMA today as well so we'll see.

Interesting. On a side note 2 vzw apps showed up randomly in my app drawer. I was able to uninstall them but they weren't there before. One was messenger and the other I think was My Verizon.

Those got installed when you inserted the VZ SIM.
For those of you getting RMAs best of luck. Their RMA department is a mess, they are not shipping anything. Some of us have RMAs open since day one. There is thread here on it, and a pretty big one on Reddit.

I don't think this is right. I bought the unlocked variant from Verizon & unlocked the bootloader no problem.

General Successfully Bootloader unlocked AT&T Pixel 7 Pro!

Hi guys, I'm a longtime member here and developer for Paranoid Android custom rom. While I haven't been active on XDA these days, I did want to share a bit of information about how I unlocked the bootloader on my AT&T Pixel 7 Pro. To my knowledge, carrier-branded Pixel's will not allow bootloader unlocking unless the carrier's requirements are met and a sim unlock is initiated. I had to pay off my Pixel 6 Pro to get it bootloader unlocked in the past so I assume the rules still apply. If anything has changed, feel free to correct me. I just picked up this phone today, and no it is not paid off and still on my AT&T installment plan. This thread does not and will not encourage evading paying off your device installments, while bootloader unlocking does not correlate with sim unlocking, I am not encouraging this glitch/workaround to lead to that discussion.
THIS IS NOT A GUIDE, this is just an detailed explanation on how I unlocked my bootloader.
I bought this phone with AT&T knowing the restrictions it had on unlocking the bootloader, but I wanted to take another crack at finding a workaround. My situation is a bit unique but can be comparable to others out there. I started digging through the com.google.android.apps.work.oobconfig apk. The same apk that was removed as a workaround to sim unlock the T-Mobile Pixel 6 Pro. Yes this apk exists on the AT&T variant of the Pixel 7 Pro. So I spent some hours figuring out how it works, and nothing I could get around code wise, but I got came up with an idea. The apk is heavily based on the inserted sim card.
My Pixel 6 Pro was unlocked through AT&T with that sim inserted. My phone number is now transferred to an eSIM on my iPhone 14 Pro Max, but my old physical sim card was still in my Pixel 6 Pro. Weirdly enough, it picked up the network, there was just no service but the sims ICCD was still registered to AT&T.
So just for laughs, I took my old sim card out of my Pixel 6 Pro, inserted it into my Pixel 7 Pro and did a factory reset and what do ya know, when I enabled developer settings the OEM unlock option was no longer greyed out. I thought it was probably a bug, so I booted to bootloader and used the fastboot unlock command and the phone unlocked. I still can't believe this worked, I'm not sure if it's an issue with Google's servers or AT&T's servers but I just wanted to share this information to prove that it's definitely possible. If anyone has a similar situation feel free to try it out, even with other carrier's and report back. I attached some photos of proof below. I'm also on A13 (TD1A.220804.031).

Try sim card first, then factory reset with the sim installed

That's awesome. A similar thing happened to me with a Verizon variant a couple of weeks ago using the android flash tool from google. Mine is full unlocked and rooted now.

Just a heads up. SIM unlock is different than carrier unlock which is also different from bootloader unlock. You're talking about carrier unlock. SIM locking/unlocking is controlled only by you and is a native feature of Android that you can optionally enable or disable at will.
I wouldn't enable it, by the way, otherwise in an emergency if your phone breaks, you wouldn't be able to simply put that SIM card in a different phone because it would still be locked to your current one.

This happened when I got my Pixel 6 Pro replaced I already had my phone unlocked. When I transferred my sim to the new phones OEM unlock was not grayed out. I just assumed T-Mobile automatically did it since I already had this done on the replaced phone. Sadly this was not the case with this 7 Pro. I sure was excited when I saw this post though.

I tried it both ways Should I have put the SIM card back in my old unlocked phone before retrying the second time or do they not do anything???
I'll probably end up having to sweet talk some poor T-Mobile rep into helping me out haha

I mean, the OP posted screenshots and one of them clearly states that their bootloader is unlocked.
To be clear, I wasn't thinking that a carrier unlock / sim unlock automatically means that the bootloader unlocks. A carrier locked device such as the OP's AT&T model or my T-Mobile model cannot unlock the BOOTLOADER until they are CARRIER unlocked. The OP had a strange glitch in the matrix that tricked their phone into thinking it was carrier unlocked thus allowing the bootloader unlock.

I suspect if he tried to flash a Magisk altered .img file in an attempt to root it would fail.

Does the old trick where you claim to be traveling out of country for a week and request a temporary sim unlock not work anymore? I was planning on picking up a T-Mobile variant and going this route through a combination of T-mobile Twitter and Phone support.

Going to try this tonight. Wonder if the old sim has to be from an unlock pixel 6 pro or if it could be from a oneplus 7 pro?

My bootloader is definitely unlocked, look at the screenshots attached in OP

You're correct, a sim unlock is required to unlock the bootloader, based on the apk that handles this, it downloads the configuration for your phone number/sim and based on that configuration it determines whether the phone can be sim unlocked, which in return allows the bootloader to be unlocked.
It did actually sim unlock the device, I just didn't want to mention it here because I don't want to encourage this on EIP devices

I should've added, the moment I unboxed the phone I took the sim card out before booting it for the first time in case it writes to some un-wipable partition. Idk if that's confirmed to play a part in it working

So when you power on or reboot the phone you get a warning saying the bootloader is unlocked and the option to pause the boot by pressing the power button?
Also, have you tried to flash a Magisk altered .img file and root it?

My wifes 6 Pro was strange. I set mine up as normal with my sim in and took the latest ota update. Then I went to Googles site to try and flash the full update via the flash tool. I connected my phone as it instructs you to and then I decided to check the OEM unlock and the it was. I think there may be some hick up in the server communication that allows this sometimes. Needless to say I'm thrilled.

Yes I do, have not tried Magisk because I hate rooting, my sole intentions for unlocking the bootloader was to support my custom rom

Definitely sounds like server issues on Google's end, I'm glad I took advantage of it before they "fixed" it lol

You can't unlock the bootloader on Verizon models.

That's how the Verizon one is. I've seen some video on youtube on how to possibly enable it.... but nothing works. Lughnasadh is correct.

For T-Mobile you have to be carrier unlocked first before you can unlock the bootloader. This usually involves paying off the phone and then contacting the carrier to have them Carrier unlock it.

I got my pixel 7 pro sim unlocked through the chat function of the T-Mobile app. From there I was able to enable OEM unlock. No need to pay it off, just try and get a good rep in the chat/be abundantly friendly

You have to get TMobile to do a permanent sim/network unlock. They do it over the phone. They make you follow specific rules though, device has to be payed off and you have to have been with T-mobile for a specific amount of time...... If you get a tech support guy who just doesn't care then you may get lucky. I just kept calling until someone did it for me.

Could have if they rooted before letting the phone be booted with a sim card. Verizon carrier unlocks at 6 months paid off or not. You don't have to ask it just happens but if you need to be 100% sure then ask.
I remember getting the first XL and without thinking I booted it up with the sim, it updated and bye bye unlock bootloader option. Thankfully my son also wanted one so we just swapped. I rooted before anything else, then put my sim in and didn't use ota updates because I didn't want the bloat from Verizon.

That was for the OG XL. We're talking about the Pixel 7/Pro here (also applies to the 3-6 series as well)(some say they found an exploit for the 2). Carrier unlocking is irrelevant in this case.

Changed it again huh? I know carrier unlocking is irrelevant but they were talking about it and I knew the vzw info because I had them unlock a phone then they pushed an app to it and that was that.
I have 2 7 pros I need to root that will be going on Verizon but I'm not putting the sim in until I'm done setting up either way. It's bloat free and staying that way. I'm probably switching to fi if the service is good here. I'll save a ton of money on just 2 lines.

It doesn't matter if you put the SIM in yet or not. What matters is where you got the phone from - each carrier has a different model number. Did you get the phones from Verizon? Then you're out of luck, no bootloader unlocking, no root. Did you get them from Google? Then it's easy, just follow guides on here.
And as others have mentioned, T-Mobile allows you to unlock your phone but it almost always requires that you have the device on active line for 60 days and that you have paid for it in full.

Of course not, I don't trust Verizon for even a brief second. I bought a non carrier variant at best buy. I also bought a fi sim because I want to quit Verizon. We pay something like $158 a month for 2 lines and 4 gigs of shared data. Here they have the best service by far but I'm near wifi 99% of the day so it's not a worry.
Hell last month we used 0.68 gigs of data though I saved 30 using Adguard.
I've been rooting since the G1 so I don't forsee any problems but I'm looking for changes like you mentioned and others have...
Really miss those days especially once the Nexus one was out.
Everything was easier to do and there were tons of custom ROM options. With TWRP I'd make an image then flash a new ROM and possibly kernel and be tinkering in settings in under 3 min. It's a shame the scene has shrunk so much but there is still tons of quality stuff which is always nice.

The old days are gone unfortunately. People should consider themselves lucky if they can even get a custom recovery for their device.
I'm perfectly happy with stock Pixel rom. The only reason I root is for custom kernel and some extra control over the apps on my device.
The benefits of rooting and/or unlocking the bootloader have diminished greatly overtime.

Not sure what plan your on? We're on Verizon and pay that for 4 lines with unlimited everything.

Apparently even AFTER Carrier Unlocking Pixel 7 Pro, Bootloader is NOT Unlockable, under any circumstance. VZW is pointing at Google and Google is pointing at VZW. I am waiting for a reply or call back from a Google Supervisor, because it should be clearly noted on the VZW Box that even after Carrier Unlocking device, BL CANNOT be Unlocked under any circumstance. I smell a class action lawsuit against Google and/or VZW for Pixel Customers who are unable to OEM Unlock Devices after Carrier Unlocking. Anyone want in? I am hoping I get the right Google Supervisor who will warranty exchange device for another Unlocked or any other Branded Pixel 7 Pro....

Good luck getting a class action because you can't bootloader unlock your phone. It's been this way with phones on Verizon for many years now. Never buy a Verizon branded phone if you want to unlock the bootloader.
