DNS66 - Google Pixel 2 Themes, Apps, and Mods

for those that have the Verizon (unrooted) version, can someone please confirm if they have tried DNS66 to block ads (in particular, those in-app ads), and how well that has performed? i got info from someone using the non-verizon version on the XL, but just wanted to see here.
thanks!

Why not use AdGuard?

does AdGuard work?
also, my understanding is the DNS66 does not need to be running in the background, so less battery drain.

DNS66 has been working well for me. I will say most ads are blocked. A couple apps are still displaying ads in-app. I do like that DNS66 doesn't show up in my battery stats like AdGuard.

DNS66 blocks at domain level meaning it can block full websites accidentally. DNS66 is constantly running too.
AdGuard, although it shows up in battery stats, doesn't drain battery. I can still hit 5/6/7 Hours SOT on my P2.

I understand DNS66 runs constantly. Lots of apps run constantly and don't drain the battery significantly. I've read that link. Just my opinion, but I think it's a skewed explanation. If you take those words at face value, wouldn't the total mAh burn from all apps be the almost the same with or without AdGuard (minus the mA AdGuard will use)? That wasn't what I saw in my real world usage. Other apps still had significant usage in addition to AdGuard. I don't think I should ignore an otherwise reliable graph of battery usage in place of the very app that appears to be using the most battery. And you may get X hours of screen on time, but that doesn't prove your point. SOT is the worst indication of a phones battery potential. I despise that "benchmark." It means nothing from one person to another. I only get 2-3 SOT but I have excellent battery life because I charge my phone 2-3 times per week. You don't have better battery life than me because you have double SOT. Different uses. Maybe AdGuard works best for people who use their phone constantly and bad for people like me that don't. Maybe it causes standby drain in my case. IDK.
I have purchased AdGuard on the IOS platform. I think its a good product and it achieves its goals. The developer is very responsive, which is awesome. I would support AdGuard again without a second thought. So far DNS66 works best for me on the Pixel 2. To each their own.

I've also used Adguard. Best adblocker for non-root users that I have tried.

blockada works well.

[Discussion] Battery Killers

We all want good battery life, that is a given. With the large batteries and the optimized operating systems versions most of us are running today, we all should have it. But often times we don't, why not? Apps with services causing wake lock issues are often to blame. So, I wanted to start this thread to post all apps we have found to either avoid or with workarounds to prevent bad battery life from ensuing.

The paid version or the free one?
Make sure no apps are running in the background, if you're not gonna be using your phone for a few hours turn your brightness to the lowest possible, make sure your screen shuts off in less settings ect.

both have the same funcionality. the paid one is just a donation to developer, if you like his app.
Is it a 'to kill' or 'most wanted' list bro? How many $'s will be paid?LOL..
Ok, as u can search in xda , there are alot of posts ppl complaining about some cpu and battery hunger background processes and apps .
In my case these was built in "download manager " and "audio effect service".
I removed the 2nd one permanently!

I agree, facebook its battery sucker...
Wifi, Scrreen brightness, Auto sync, GPS and games in general seem to be the big culkprits for my battery draining. Even simple things like turning auto rotate off can help a tiny bit for performance and battery life. Limiting your amount of active widgets and screens animations on your fancy launcher can cut down as well on battery and performance. Certain IM apps like facebook chat, skype, and a ton of others will kill your device fast. Google + is known to be a bandwidth hog and batttery killer. I noticed when im browsiing youtube simple things like turning off hd will dramatically help improve battery life because your network is not sucking as much bandwidth.
There is all kinds of stuff to do . It is a constant battle.
Greenify app & use Lean Kernel if possible
Like many have said, apps running in the background are the main culprits of a shirt battery life. Unless you feel those apps are truly essential I recommend uninstalling those apps.

Using greenify like most of you guys. Yesterday I installed lux lite on a new custom ROM and noticed it was responsible for about 25% of my battery usage over about an hour with the screen on. Anyone with experience with this app know if this is normal behavior?

I don't know if anyone realizes this, but what I have experienced with my phones(from Nexus One - Nexus 4) I have noticed when I charge my phone through a computer the battery seems to go out faster. When I connect it directly to power it lasts much longer.
Has anyone else noticed this"?

Great battery life with MM update

Hello ..
I am getting amazing battery life since I got 6.0 .. Before with lollipop I used to get around 5 hours on screen time. Amazingly though I hit 6.30 hours on the first day after update, and this with wireless, mobile data and Bluetooth on. And no data saving and screen on 70% which is amazing.
Good job Motorola
Excellent I would say
Excellent batt life with this new update very impressive how a software help the hardware to accomplish that task.
I replaced my STYLE and got a new one two days back. The old one would be dead even though it has 80%+ battery.
The current one is pretty good compared with the old unit. I got 4+ hours of SOT and I was on 4G and WiFi all the time. Was using it heavily for browsing and chat.

This is not bad at all. What I am saying is after MM update battery life increased about 1.5 hours extra SOT
Perhaps the update fixed something else? Looking at the MM update from L, there appears to be nothing besides Doze, which only works when the device is still and not used. I notice perhaps 15% better battery life if using the device sporadically during the day (medium use for me). With heavier use, I notice zero difference so far.
I was hoping some kernel adjustments were made, but the device spikes with heat about the same. I first thought it was less, but notice the same apps get the device very warm to hot (the GPU is over it's head with 1440p). Standby time is a lot better though, but only a significant improvement if lighter use though the day (so Doze can be a factor).
Usage is relative only to the user though
How do you get such great battery performance? I barely manage to get 3 hours SOT.
When the device is idle there's no drain, i only lose 2-3% overnight. But when the device is active the battery drains very quickly.
Tried a lot of battery saving stuff, greenify, powernap, and so on, but no luck.
I'm on MM stock rooted. Having a lot of apps installed. May this be the culprit?

If 20% brightness or less, all you do is web surf and a little Youtube, with good LTE signal or wifi and VERY little use of apps that force the GPU to push 1440p, you can get five hours. Everything is relative to the user. That's it.
Counting stock apps, I have 395 apps and 5GB free (64GB model). based on MM battery report, I have no apps that are background battery demons.

Are you talking just 1440p video in general or are you talking 1440p games?
I'm lucky if I get 2 hours of SoT. I can't tell if Android Wear is eating my battery or if it's Sprint, despite having a decent signal. Bluetooth and Cell Standby are chewing up the majority of my battery power. I think the network management is trying to shuffle my phone between their three frequencies and while at work, I can only get on the 1900MHz PCS band due to having to use a repeater.

Some games and apps run at 1440p and choke the GPU. They stand out by running very warm to hot and drain the battery more quickly.

Yes the apps do drain battery.
I uninstalled one particular email app that alone would drain 6% daily!
Anyway this time I got is without gaming. Mostly chatting and browsing and a lot of movies (vlc). I think that day I watched not less than 3-4 hours of continuous movies on the phone.
The only thing I did differently than before is removing unnecessary app permissions and notifications. Other than that I have done nothing. Like I said I do not try to save battery because I always have power source near by, but this 6.30 hours SOT i s awesome I tell you.
Based on my little experience with Android some apps will screw up the phone for no reason. First time I got the phone I got around 3 hours SOT with so many unneeded apps, and I did not know which app is draining my battery so I formatted the phone, and started installing apps one by one and watching the battery. And I managed to hit 4-5 hours with lollipop. Now with the update I got this and I was shocked.
Fully back to stock, unrooted, bootlocker relocked.
Upgraded to MM via OTA.
Installed all my apps via Play Store. Until now, i always restored my apps via TiBu, including data/settings.
I'm curious if my battery life will improve.
Will post the outcome, if any
Cheers!
A lot of the time my phone is just sitting on my desk. It used to say I would get around 1-2 days battery life from it sitting there doing nothing. After MM it says there is 8 days left. I have had it unplugged all day and even with some moderate use I am only at 95%. The doze mode really makes a big impact in stand by times!

I think it did do something to the apps. The way you can block apps from getting access to location or other services is pretty impressive. I love that as I hated that apps would have access to everything on my phone and I cannot do anything about it. Now I can and this particular feature made me love Android even more after I switched two months back.
Is there something wrong with me. I only get 2 to 2 1/2 hours battery tops and actually I've tried amplify (paid version), and power nap and they don't seem to help much. I have only got 3 hours once since I got this phone. Is it just AT&T maybe?
I'd like to mention something else. Probably not related at all, but ..
My old MXS was a faulty unit (as I mentioned in my previous post). Once I got a new replacement, I have not yet charged the phone using Turbo Charger. I am charging it with Mi Pad charger (non-turbo). Yes, it took about 2+ hours to go from 30 to 100%.
Old MXS was always charged with turbo charger and I was getting pretty bad SOT and the baterry would drain as fast as it would charge. Does it have to do something with using a normal vs turbo charger?
I stop pretty much all background services and apps not in use. The only active applications are firefox, whatsapp and VLC.
My screen is set to 50% brightness with adaptive brightness ON. Moto X display and attentive display is ON.
Non-root (planning to root soon) and Moto ROM.

what difference does it make if it is charged slowly or not??
It should not matter, if the battery is not keeping the power that means it is defective, nothing to do with slow or fast charging.

Worth rooting? Can it improve my battery life?

Hey guys! Been getting around 4h SOT as highest on my device, AOD turned off, 30-50 % brightness, fhd+ and dark theme.
Can get through the day but can't get a minute more than 4h sot which seems weird.
It's not that I think the battery life is absolute ****, I'm okay with it, the thing that sort of "bothers" me is that i see people getting like 6-10h SOT on like 2 days of charge which seems unbelievable to me.
Now on to the question,
is my utterly **** 4g signal preventing me from reaching 6-7 h SOT or is it just that I'm "unlucky" with the battery lottery.
Is it fair to expect a 6-7h SOT if i do decide to root and flash something like a notorious kernel and a rom?
Which I know will permanently void my warranty.
Or should I return the device and swap it out for either another s8+ or something like a g6?
I hope I don't seem too much of a brat ****face but I did lay out tons of cash for this phone, which other than the battery I am incredibly impressed by.
Thank you guys for keeping this forum running, it's been a lifesaver!

Most of these 6-10 hours of sot is nonsense as most of these people don't even use the phone properly only leaving the screen on so that sot would increase rather than using it properly like watching YouTube having a decent brightness etc... Just use your phone as much as you like stop thinking about battery life if it's really a problem get a powerbank. Me my self if I'm at work I use a lot of GPS as I need to travel and I have my screen turned of as I listen to Google maps rather look this will put me at around 3 to 4 hours of SOT or more sometimes depending how much I use the screen. But when I'm at home I use the phone non stop and I get around 5 -7 I always use full brightest all the time full res gaming sometimes youtube etc as you can see the people who get 6 to 10 they don't even use the phone that much so is there a point for them to have this phone if they don't use it to full potential no they might as well get a cheap phone.
Edit:
The only reason I would suggest rooting is if you want to play around with the phone like having a different kernel that allows to change voltage, speed etc

This, i can get 20hr sot on my mate 9 if i leave it with screen on, take in account SOT means NOTHING, it just one measure that can be easily manipulated.
I use my phone the way i use and i only judge by the end of the day, how much perfect left and what took the most of my battery life, without caring about SOT at all.
Just now i was traveling to Budapest and made ton of photos and videos with my DSLR and the Mate 9, on sunny days your brightness will be up, shooting 4K videos and taking pictures, using GPS google maps, will make your SOT low, does that mean your battery life is bad? NOT AT ALL
Stop caring about sot and use GSAM monitoring up to understand if there is a rogue app.
I have the S8+ and I see that they have figured out how to root the Snapdragon version. I am not really pressed to root my phone.
The 1st time I used the phone, which was a weekend and mostly WiFi, I got over 6 hours of screen time. However on my work days where I use mostly LTE service and I'm inside an office building, I may only have 3-4 hours of screen time but I will make it home with almost 50% of battery life.
I'm no longer concerned with screen time. If my phone can get me through a full day, then I'm happy with it.

Firstly,
I fully agree with @Derpling post above .( His last paragraph..)
Also SOT, now days, means nothing to me.!
Many years back, i used to be obsessed
with benchmark, battery usage, performance etc.
I also use to root all my device's.
However, presently i have stop been " obsessed"
and accept what is reasonable/acceptable.
eg. battery usage including SOT.
prefomance and stop rooting.
There is plenty work arounds available.
Presently, what i do
is i have a few good battery
apps... Betterbattery, Wakelock detector,
Gsam, I enabled these apps with ADB, to get them working. No root. (Very straightforward one or two liner commands, that's all.)
If i have a rogue app, and my battery use " suffers" i use these apps to id the app. and sort app out accordingly.
eg clear cache /data or uninstall.
Lastly i read online that presently,
more devs are
using " other alternatives" than root.
eg ADB...
to give you similar end results.
Bottom line... I found that in most cases
rooting a device just
creates other/more issues.!.. to fix.!
Now days, for me to root my device ( if ever again)
i must have a very, very good reason to root.
Good luck

You so right about root, there is a workaround to everything tbh, i use the Mate 9 without root and it's the closest phone in my opinion to perfection, no tweaks needed.

I think this is your problem, not the battery. One of the biggest battery killers on any device is a weak signal as the phone will push more power to the radio to try and find a better one (not exactly what happens, but there or thereabouts). Rotting won't change that.
Have you tried switching to 3G only, does that make a difference? Does it differ when you spend time in an area with a better signal?

The problem with my service signal is just temporary, I've been working for the summer but I'm moving back to the university tonight, there I have full 4g and 3g signal so hopefully this will change, however I have settled down a bit with the phone and I'm pretty happy with the battery now, 4h sot is not bad
yea rooting aint the solution
try gsam, wakelock detector, etc to detect the rogue app
imho you don't need root to improve your battery life, i'm achieving 5hr SOT easily with brightness 50%, AOD on and resolution WQHD+, all you need is to disable some of the preinstalled packages, do a bit of research to find out which ones can be disabled without a risk, then you will be good to go pm me if you need an assistance
I think your battery preformance is most likely to some apps or how you use it, I can say from expariance and experemanting with my S8+ that SOT and battery over all can shift.
I haven't rooted since im using samsung pay and haven't had a real need for root yet. but have tried a couple of diff apps and tests to max my battery but found that non off it really saves battery, quite the opposite.
I have tried substrantium to go all black in the phone (cus we have Amoled) but my battery life got worse
tried nova launcer to get some preformance boost and also black down the theme, but nova still suffers from battey drain issues (had same problem with my HTC10)
have disabled alot of services like bixby etc with BK Plugin. but made no big diff.
So after having the phone since launch and mixing and matching stuff to see if I could squeese a little more life out of an already good phone, I got to conclution that Samsung has done a good job in optimizing the S8+.
The stock launcher is fast and efficent, the built in "cleaning" program works well in shuting down unused apps etc. and running the phone with no extras and not tweking anything special or trying to get the phone as black as possible, I can go about 2 full days with normal use.
If you have the Snapdragon, battery life will decrease, by 20%.
I switched from a Verizon S8 to an unlocked S8+ and imo not having any of the added bloatware makes a difference. On my S8 I could make it through a whole day but my battery would be down under 10%. I know the S8 plus has a bigger battery but I go to bed with 30-40% of battery life.
I run my phone starting at 4:45am with a gym work out and I'm in bed by 11pm. My usage is mostly lte except for when I'm home. My SOT is always 5 hours or more.

Battery ok?

Hi,
I read several posts where people talk about 7..9 hr SOT I start to doubt about the quality of the battery inside my pixel 4a.
Mine is usually depleted around 4hrs, no special apps no gaming only browsing, some YouTube, spotify nothing special. Most of the time using WiFi and good/moderate cell phone coverage.
I already disabled screen notifications, AOD display.
And not sure what else I can do to improve the standby time.
Any tips?
30wakups /hr seems a bit high?
Makes no sense to discuss alarms/wakelock/wakeups in the context of SOT. Besides, the former has little correlation to overall battery life with modern Android builds.
Panel brightness is generally largest variable in perceived battery life which is one reason comparing SOTs is problematic unless that variable is controlled. Consider your settings to see if it's a factor.
Radios (signal strength) and CPU are the next biggest consumers. SOT will almost certainly be less for active gamers vs casual browsers. Connected devices (eg: fitness band) can also take a toll. Make sure GPS receiver is only on when needed. A dirty finger scanner or stuck proximity scanner (rare) can be huge drainers.
If all that seems 'normal' the you may indeed have a bad battery. Device should be under warranty; reach out to Google or seller for a replacement.

Ah - that's a different matter. I can easily score idle drain rates <0.2%/hr on my 4a. Biggest culprits for idle drain are social and fitness apps that intentionally evade Android's native power management tools. Verify 'adaptive battery' is enabled and no unexpected user apps are shown as exceptions under 'battery optimization'. Restart your phone in '"Safe Mode" (Google for instructions) to see if the idle drain persists. If still no joy install one of the legacy battery monitoring apps like BBS or GSAM (available in the play store) to see if they surface one or more culprits. You can also post a BBS idle dump in the BBS thread where 'good seminarians' will offer commentary on what may be causing the drain.

0.2%?!? Damn! I always look for and am happy with less than 1%. Crazy. You must get days out of the battery

That's idle (screen off) drain rate with only SMS (text) exempted from what is commonly known as 'doze'. Stock A11 configurations; device is not rooted nor have I gone to any length to optimize behaviors. It's a breath of fresh air after many years of 'tuning' hardware, kernels and ROMs to my liking.
Those running a handful of active social apps along with corresponding notifications will see substantially higher 'screen off' drain rates.
Yes, I can score "days" off a charge if I use my phone sparingly. Typical use is somewhat different; I usually recharge every other day with 30-40% remaining. That's obviously much better than others report because I use my phone only when another option (tablet or laptop) isn't readily available.
I usually use my phone 3-4 hours a day because I work 10 hrs but when I go to bed there's still 60% remaining. On the weekend I charge once a day and use my phone constantly (youtube/reddit) with a remaining 20%. Battery definitely doesn't last as long as my old 7t but honestly I have no trouble with it with dark mode/adaptive battery/auto brightness/ restricting permissions to "only when app is running". Like others have said I'd check your battery health and maybe tinker with your settings

Question Greenify on unrooted device

Hey guys. After all the discussion about battery drain while idle, i was curious if Greenify actually helps with battery drain, anymore, or if Google had improved the OS efficiency enough that this app was no longer necessary. I tracked my battery use overnight, and it's close to 0.5% per hour, so about what people were reporting in the battery use thread (with Greenify installed and active). Thanks much!

A 0.5%/hr idle drain is very acceptable, in my opinion. Also, in my opinion, apps like Greenify haven't been needed in a long time. In fact, they can sometimes cause more harm than good (I recall at least 2 people with either a Pixel 6 or 7 who were having problems that were caused by Greenify.)
If you have an app that likes to use more resources than it should in the background, I would recommend just battery restricting it.

Great! That aligns well with my own thoughts. I got burned once by one of those "battery saver" apps that was really a virus. I'll take Greenify off and see what i get.
Agree with a lot of the above. Android and certain devs really have the battery thing locked in, especially compared to 4-5 years ago. I use to have 3ish apps like Greenify running back in the day but there's not much value now from my experience.
Even straight android out of the box on the 6a is pretty damn good for battery longevity - almost any rom really is great now. Personally running the velocity rom + mvk combo and life is good lol.
