We all want good battery life, that is a given. With the large batteries and the optimized operating systems versions most of us are running today, we all should have it. But often times we don't, why not? Apps with services causing wake lock issues are often to blame. So, I wanted to start this thread to post all apps we have found to either avoid or with workarounds to prevent bad battery life from ensuing.

The paid version or the free one?
Make sure no apps are running in the background, if you're not gonna be using your phone for a few hours turn your brightness to the lowest possible, make sure your screen shuts off in less settings ect.

both have the same funcionality. the paid one is just a donation to developer, if you like his app.
Is it a 'to kill' or 'most wanted' list bro? How many $'s will be paid?LOL..
Ok, as u can search in xda , there are alot of posts ppl complaining about some cpu and battery hunger background processes and apps .
In my case these was built in "download manager " and "audio effect service".
I removed the 2nd one permanently!

I agree, facebook its battery sucker...
Wifi, Scrreen brightness, Auto sync, GPS and games in general seem to be the big culkprits for my battery draining. Even simple things like turning auto rotate off can help a tiny bit for performance and battery life. Limiting your amount of active widgets and screens animations on your fancy launcher can cut down as well on battery and performance. Certain IM apps like facebook chat, skype, and a ton of others will kill your device fast. Google + is known to be a bandwidth hog and batttery killer. I noticed when im browsiing youtube simple things like turning off hd will dramatically help improve battery life because your network is not sucking as much bandwidth.
There is all kinds of stuff to do . It is a constant battle.
Greenify app & use Lean Kernel if possible
Like many have said, apps running in the background are the main culprits of a shirt battery life. Unless you feel those apps are truly essential I recommend uninstalling those apps.

Using greenify like most of you guys. Yesterday I installed lux lite on a new custom ROM and noticed it was responsible for about 25% of my battery usage over about an hour with the screen on. Anyone with experience with this app know if this is normal behavior?

I don't know if anyone realizes this, but what I have experienced with my phones(from Nexus One - Nexus 4) I have noticed when I charge my phone through a computer the battery seems to go out faster. When I connect it directly to power it lasts much longer.
Has anyone else noticed this"?

Hi there,
I bought my one plus a month ago, and am getting around 3.5 screen time.
It is disappointing as I see screenshots of people with one plus who are getting 6 -10 hours screen time.
I am on battery saver mode, not using music, whatsApp, wase games or facebook, just a little bit email and browsing.
At night it is not going down a lot, but when I start using the phone, it goes down quite quickly.
(1 percent every 2 minutes, sometimes every minute). It seems to get worse every day.
If I start using GPS or video or music, my battery will be finished by noon.
I replaced the battery, and it is the same.
Attached three screenshots. (Including the night)
Help please?
Thank you!
I share you the same feeling when I see others having impressive battery performance specially screen-on time.
I have exactly the same drain behavior of yours, when my phone in deep sleep its sleep like a baby. but when I wake it its become beast awakening.
I run 3g when I am out and wi-fi at home, also running regular apps, whatsapp,snapchat,2emails,1gmail,instagram,web browsing, auto brightness, greenify. I checked with BBS and WLD but no culprit. I am on stock rom with root for the apps, no system tuning.
So you can see my setup is like most of regular users will do but noticeable difference in term of battery performance. I have no clue
Your battery life is fine, better mine
Who has a lot of SOT usually doesn't turn off/on the screen that much. The secret to achieve a lot of SOT is making long session on the screen (and having few apps, like you). So no worries I'm at 64% now with 1 hour of SOT, but I flash updates (CM 12) everyday and wake up the phone only when I need it, with 1-2 minutes sessions.

That isn't really true, I have over 100 apps installed and I turn my screen off whenever I'm not actually using it. I'm a heavy user. I get roughly six hours of screen on time.

Hi,
Well, at least I am not the only one....
The problem is that it is getting worse every day and now I lose one percent in a minute!
Horrible! I have to charge it twice a day, and I barely use it.
I have no root, am not using any of the apps, only a little bit of browsing, and checking mails.
If I try to use waze for a half of an hour or a little bit of music (max 30min, I get only about 2 hours screen time!
It seems really poor from a brand new battery.
I have no clue what to do, or what is causing it. If anyone have suggestions, i will be glad to hear!
Are you using the stock OPO rom? because I always had a poor battery life, I had all kind of protections to keep battery life but when I saw, from 100 I had 70, it was awful, one solution I saw was to flash one custom kernel, somehow improved my battery life, but the final solution was to use a custom rom, I have experienced better battery life with 5+ roms rather than the ones with 4.x.x, maybe you should taste another android flavor and check if the battery life increases
How hard was it to change the battery? Was it soldered? Where did you get a replacement ?

Sorry, I don't understand much in roms ... I bought the chinese version color os, and changed it in fast boot to cm11.

I believe this is app related. Some apps keep phones awake. I encountered this problem with my S3 because I have lots of apps. But since I made sure I only install apps I absolutely need in my oneplus, I get a fantastic battery life.

The funny thing is that it is getting worse every day.
Now my battery is going down one percent in 30-60 seconds!
I don't know what to do anymore.
Hello ..
I am getting amazing battery life since I got 6.0 .. Before with lollipop I used to get around 5 hours on screen time. Amazingly though I hit 6.30 hours on the first day after update, and this with wireless, mobile data and Bluetooth on. And no data saving and screen on 70% which is amazing.
Good job Motorola
Excellent I would say
Excellent batt life with this new update very impressive how a software help the hardware to accomplish that task.
I replaced my STYLE and got a new one two days back. The old one would be dead even though it has 80%+ battery.
The current one is pretty good compared with the old unit. I got 4+ hours of SOT and I was on 4G and WiFi all the time. Was using it heavily for browsing and chat.

This is not bad at all. What I am saying is after MM update battery life increased about 1.5 hours extra SOT
Perhaps the update fixed something else? Looking at the MM update from L, there appears to be nothing besides Doze, which only works when the device is still and not used. I notice perhaps 15% better battery life if using the device sporadically during the day (medium use for me). With heavier use, I notice zero difference so far.
I was hoping some kernel adjustments were made, but the device spikes with heat about the same. I first thought it was less, but notice the same apps get the device very warm to hot (the GPU is over it's head with 1440p). Standby time is a lot better though, but only a significant improvement if lighter use though the day (so Doze can be a factor).
Usage is relative only to the user though
How do you get such great battery performance? I barely manage to get 3 hours SOT.
When the device is idle there's no drain, i only lose 2-3% overnight. But when the device is active the battery drains very quickly.
Tried a lot of battery saving stuff, greenify, powernap, and so on, but no luck.
I'm on MM stock rooted. Having a lot of apps installed. May this be the culprit?

If 20% brightness or less, all you do is web surf and a little Youtube, with good LTE signal or wifi and VERY little use of apps that force the GPU to push 1440p, you can get five hours. Everything is relative to the user. That's it.
Counting stock apps, I have 395 apps and 5GB free (64GB model). based on MM battery report, I have no apps that are background battery demons.

Are you talking just 1440p video in general or are you talking 1440p games?
I'm lucky if I get 2 hours of SoT. I can't tell if Android Wear is eating my battery or if it's Sprint, despite having a decent signal. Bluetooth and Cell Standby are chewing up the majority of my battery power. I think the network management is trying to shuffle my phone between their three frequencies and while at work, I can only get on the 1900MHz PCS band due to having to use a repeater.

Some games and apps run at 1440p and choke the GPU. They stand out by running very warm to hot and drain the battery more quickly.

Yes the apps do drain battery.
I uninstalled one particular email app that alone would drain 6% daily!
Anyway this time I got is without gaming. Mostly chatting and browsing and a lot of movies (vlc). I think that day I watched not less than 3-4 hours of continuous movies on the phone.
The only thing I did differently than before is removing unnecessary app permissions and notifications. Other than that I have done nothing. Like I said I do not try to save battery because I always have power source near by, but this 6.30 hours SOT i s awesome I tell you.
Based on my little experience with Android some apps will screw up the phone for no reason. First time I got the phone I got around 3 hours SOT with so many unneeded apps, and I did not know which app is draining my battery so I formatted the phone, and started installing apps one by one and watching the battery. And I managed to hit 4-5 hours with lollipop. Now with the update I got this and I was shocked.
Fully back to stock, unrooted, bootlocker relocked.
Upgraded to MM via OTA.
Installed all my apps via Play Store. Until now, i always restored my apps via TiBu, including data/settings.
I'm curious if my battery life will improve.
Will post the outcome, if any
Cheers!
A lot of the time my phone is just sitting on my desk. It used to say I would get around 1-2 days battery life from it sitting there doing nothing. After MM it says there is 8 days left. I have had it unplugged all day and even with some moderate use I am only at 95%. The doze mode really makes a big impact in stand by times!

I think it did do something to the apps. The way you can block apps from getting access to location or other services is pretty impressive. I love that as I hated that apps would have access to everything on my phone and I cannot do anything about it. Now I can and this particular feature made me love Android even more after I switched two months back.
Is there something wrong with me. I only get 2 to 2 1/2 hours battery tops and actually I've tried amplify (paid version), and power nap and they don't seem to help much. I have only got 3 hours once since I got this phone. Is it just AT&T maybe?
I'd like to mention something else. Probably not related at all, but ..
My old MXS was a faulty unit (as I mentioned in my previous post). Once I got a new replacement, I have not yet charged the phone using Turbo Charger. I am charging it with Mi Pad charger (non-turbo). Yes, it took about 2+ hours to go from 30 to 100%.
Old MXS was always charged with turbo charger and I was getting pretty bad SOT and the baterry would drain as fast as it would charge. Does it have to do something with using a normal vs turbo charger?
I stop pretty much all background services and apps not in use. The only active applications are firefox, whatsapp and VLC.
My screen is set to 50% brightness with adaptive brightness ON. Moto X display and attentive display is ON.
Non-root (planning to root soon) and Moto ROM.

what difference does it make if it is charged slowly or not??
It should not matter, if the battery is not keeping the power that means it is defective, nothing to do with slow or fast charging.

Using Snapchat with 4G, is location, nfc and bluetooth also turned on?
That would explain the bad battery.
Snapchat is a battery hog, maybe also using some facebook services that you allowed location on and GPS is turned on.
I get around 6h SOT on 4G constant, no facebook permissions and not using snapchat.
Hi,
Thank you for the fast response. I have location turned on because of snapmaps so I will turn that off and limit some of Snapchat's permissions. Is there anything else that someone can suggest please it is crucial for me that my phone lasts all day because eventhough I dedicate quite a lot to Snapchat I also need it for word and Samsung internet for at least 2h each day.
Thank you again
Reduce your time on Snapchat and it'll last longer.
I know Snapchat drains my battery but it's the standby that is killing me and I already have optimised the apps and have Greenify but it seems so far that turning off location has helped quite a bit with general SOT so thank you. Also with Snapchat I only used it for 45mins and I know that it drain a lot but it just goes down too fast in general.

You don't generally need Greenify in Oreo and Pie, since they optimise apps pretty nicely on it's own.
Rather turn on advanced optimizations, look at the permission you gave to different apps (those also include the Gapps, they take too much advantage of all the permissions you give to the each app).
Also do check if you have Wifi scanning always on in the advanced wifi settings, that also lessens a battery by a margin.
Face unlock also reduces the SOT of the phone in my practice.
Some of the advices I saw on the forum, and mainly they work for me.
Also, if Gapps are spending loads of battery go to the recovery and wipe cache, let it rebuild cache with a charge or two and see if there are any results.
Thank you, I have cleared the cache and am letting it rebuild. The SoT now actually seems pretty normal just my phone tends to use 2-3% and hour on standby which doesn't seem normal. Thank you for your help though.
@echo246 Bro,
Move to stock. I am also using 128Gb variant and unlocked, wiped and moved back to stock using mega-unbrick tool. I am on OB3 pie and now I am getting 5 hr SOT + 2 days standby time in pure stock. use the stock battery optimizing features. Don't use any 3rd party app since it need to run in the back ground always to get the result. But then the result will be reverse. Also, don't be too curious and open the phone every 1 minute to check weather the battery is draining or not. Let it sleep. Be patient for one or two full battery circle (100% to 1%) get the result. You will get it. I am also in dual SIM always on 4G, location is in "ON" status. No 3rd party apps using for battery saving. Pure stock is always best and most suitable for every phone. as it made exclusively for that phone
I opened "apps" under settings and went through each and every app + system processes after the end of the first battery circle and which ever process or app used more battery, restricted it's back ground battery usage also all the installed apps too. So now no head ache. getting whats app notification even after optimised it. Not using chrome. using samsung beta browser.
Hi,
Thanks this is great thanks. I need Google pay though I tried what the other suggested and 36mins SoT with 3 hours on standby with a normal brightness without power saving mode on is unheard of for me. Thank you so far but is there anyway to make Snapchat more efficient?

I don't know whether you have replied to me or not. Anyway I assume so and replying.
Sorry I am not a snapchat user. I knew that always Facebook and whatsapp consuming more battery since it is running on background. But if you do anything, you won't get proper notifications. Only way for restricting background service is rooting. So forget all those, let the phone run as it is. OP6 is having a learning system how we use apps and accordingly it will distribute the battery. So let it learn from your usage and it will restrict itself.
(Bro, I was also a SOT + standby hunter like you, but now learned to leave everything to phone itself by controlling unwanted eagerness)
Yeah thanks by limiting the WiFi settings on not to scan and turning off location I have amazing standby now and my SoT without even having power saving on is a lot better now. Most of my problems come from Snapchat anyway but they are rewriting the very old and slow app ATM. Thank you
I have analyzed it and it turns out it is just Snapchat while using it 30 mins of using it and I'm down to 77% and I have used nothing else. Hope that snap Inc get the fix in faster coz they started the rewrite of the android code a year ago so hopefully it is done soon.
Some days I get 15hrs SOT without charging for 3 days. It all depends on how heavily your using the device
I also guess it depends on what apps you use because yesterday I had to do lots of research on my phone (I am a student which is why I need good phone battery and also why I use snapchat so much) and without power saving mode on I used 7% battery an hour (on Samsung Internet). My standby is now amazing because greenify just force closes snapchat now whenever my phone is off and when using snapchat away from home I turn location off (snapmaps) and used every optimisation for it possible. This has fixed that problem really well thank you. Yesterday I used snapchat and Samsung Internet and Excel and YouTube quite a lot and I got 5hrs SoT with only using power saving below 50% and with 14hrs standby. This therefore concludes that snapchat is a killer for every single android phone in existence (verified this on my old S6, my friends S6 edge, a S7 edge, a OP 5 and a Huawei P20 Pro). Thank you for all your help and if someone finds a new way to further improve this, then please also share your trick

I don't have anything special enabled. I just turn data off when I'm not using it, I turn location off when it's not needed. This also includes me playing Clash Royale for at least 3 hours a day sometimes more. When you're using SnapChat and your data you're also using your camera and location. GPS is one of the most battery hogging pieces of hardware on your phone. Right now I'm pushing 6 hours of SOT and I haven't charged my phone in over 24 hours and it's looking like I have 13 more hours left on my battery.

Yup, haven't had a custom kernel beat my SoT and idle drain, and tried most of them. Including wakelock blocking, underclocking, etc. Stock remains best by far, here.
Ymmv and sure some kernel fans will chime in and claim completely otherwise, and that's just fine :good:
For now enjoying 10+ hours of SoT and draining 3% per night being idle using the amazing stock kernel
I'm getting about the same, MAYBE a little better on EX Kernel. I use the custom kennel for features usually.
* Increase vibration strength
* Lower minimum MHz for less per drain when idle
* Increase Mac sound volume
* Disable swap file and Zram
* Increase read ahead to 2048kb (ideal with 32gb or more storage)
With the 7 pro I'm getting better battery then my op6 and I have forced 90hz all apps enabled 24/7 and resolution set to auto switch.
i do kernel tweaking on my own but not a custom kernel. Im on the latest h2os and i get 9 hours sot average. idle drain overnight for 8 hours is about 2%
Personally I don't run a custom kernel for power savings, I run it for wireguard support. The best way I've found to increase battery life and reduce idle drain is running xXx magisk ROM and debloating the crap out of the OS
Yeah, best battery and performance balance is the stock kernel.
Stock kernel...I don't need to look at the screen for 10 hours...doing what I do is more then enough to last for more than a day...
just hit 50% battery and I'm at over 6 hours screen on time
2 days 5 hours off charger with 7 hours screen time.
I don't know how some of you can achieve 10h SoT I literally tried everything - all kernels, debloaters, used Swifted to force most of apps to run in dark/black mode, used Automate to toggle off wifi/BT/kill unused apps that use resources in background (like fb etc), some magisk modules, kernel tweaks - I did all of that with all sorts of combinations (not all at once) and basically I couldn't improve bettery life by any noticeable margin, getting 6, sometimes 7 SoT, my goal was 8-8,5.
I don't any heavy lifting - main usage is Hangouts, Gmail, Facebook (maybe that is the killer?), Messenger, Chrome and sometimes other (telegram etc) - Never any gaming nor heavy programs.

Ymmv and sure some kernel fans will chime in and claim completely otherwise, and that's just fine :good:
For now enjoying 10+ hours of SoT and draining 3% per night being idle using the amazing stock kernel

I'd try sticking to the stock kernel, the problem is that OTG doesn't work properly.

Exactly what doesn't work properly? Can't find any peculiarities.

I think some of those messaging apps (or ones that require syncing or wait for push notifications) are the cause.
You wont see the battery page showing that they consume so much battery because in a way they dont (as they are not in the foreground or doing any heavy computation). But i found that these apps prevent the phone from deep sleep.
You can find out by using things like Better battery status to see the wakelock/alarms of those apps. Some of apps wake up the divice periodically so frequently....
But on the other hand if you want to get notifications from an app and it is poorly designed (drains unnecessary amount battery), there is no way to avoid it. But if you just use jt occasionally and dont need timely notification, try using Servicely to disable wakelock/services of the app (requires root and may break the app, but you can just enable those disabled things to restore the app).

Yeah I suspected that as well and did track Wakelocks. I used Automate to kill Messenger and FB in background when the screen is off, also tried few other tricks and amount of % of deep sleep while screen is of was better - starting from 30% awake while screen off to as low as less than 10% but... Battery train in idle was the same and generally battery life didn't improve at all... Strange but True. That's why I went back to all stock without any tricks..

hummm...well right now im on blu_spark and this is the best battery life i am getting. My set up is described here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/development/kernel-t3944179/post79844206
i think im stuck in the same shoe as you cus i rely on Wechat, google sync and a Bluetooth fitness band so the device is going to use quite a bit battery but i managed to get this far...
And battery life is what i require most out of a phone lol
here is a screen shot of battery usesage, its still early in the day but.
I expect screen on consumption will go to about 7.5~8% / hour when the day goes by, like usual.
One interesting thing is that, lol, i never tried stock kernel lol And seeing (in this thread) how people get good sot with stock kernel makes me wanna try it lol will give it a shot over the weekend

Well yours stats look great, I would like to have stats like that as you said, using BT devices connected and messaging app I know I will not hit crazy SoT but still I want a bit better cause as you said battery is like too 1 priority for me I see we are very similar users thanks, in fact I didn't try blue-spark so far, I will give it a shot! I know standy drain will be laso related to Wi-Fi / 4g coverage (low signal = big drain) but I don't think I have such bad signal so I won't to get at least not more that 1% idlle drain per hour and 8-9% on screen and I'm good.
BTW what's your screen brightness usually?

yea lol our needs are very similar.
I just set screen brightness to auto, which changes between 30% ~ 50% when im indoor, whihc is like 90% of time. Then the rest is outdoor at noon lunch time during which screen goes to full brightness for a while.
Oh i also use OLED friendly wall papers and black theme in apps if available.
Ok so your screen brightness and setting (dark theme etc) is same as mine, so this is trsnge why I'm getting almost 2x worse drain... Must try this kernel.

i also forgot to mention that, with PlusBeat, the screen off drain goes up to 1.2 per hour.....and that is because of the wakeups...so i disabled it lol
7+ hours
