Hi friends - Our team has been hard at work delivering ongoing updates as fast as possible. And today, we’re excited to announce (here on Reddit first) the launch of our Oreo beta program!
We’re dedicating tomorrow’s bi-weekly AMA to chat all things Oreo. Until then, see important details below.
Where can I download the beta?
You can download the Oreo beta here, along with each of our previous releases.
How do I install the beta? Once installed, can I go back to the most current public release?
You will receive instructions once you submit your e-mail address here to sign up for the beta.
How can I provide feedback/report bugs?
Please submit feedback using this form. We’ll monitor comments on Reddit as much as possible, but using the form is the best way to ensure your feedback reaches our team.
When will you officially release Oreo?
Your testing will help us accelerate the public release of Oreo. Our goal is to release it before the end of the year. We’ll be in a position to provide a clear timeline once we start to get feedback from this beta program.
Please note:
The Oreo Beta is pre-release software that may contain software bugs. We welcome and encourage you to let us know about issues you experience. However, our Support team is working to get you the final Oreo release as soon as possible. So they won't be available to troubleshoot any software issues that you may encounter on the Oreo Beta.
And if you decide that you don't want to continue on the Oreo Beta, that's OK. You can revert to the latest version of Android Nougat from the Current Builds section of this site. Downloading the Oreo Beta from us won't affect your Essential Limited Warranty rights. But it may affect the terms of any third party warranty you may have.
Known issues list (updated 11/14)
Intermittent Bluetooth connectivity issues with certain auto brands
Battery performance degradations until optimized Oreo framework complete
Occasional ANRs with certain apps
So glad I got this phone.. Looking more and more promising

How's the UI fluidity?
I performed a straight upgrade with everything I was using still installed. It went flawlessly and runs perfect. I did not have to reinstall a single app or re-add any of my personal information. Very pleased with the upgrade both in installation and operation. Nova Launcher seems to run more smoothly for me, could be in head though. Super happy to have Oreo, does not feel like a Beta build thus far.

Cool cool. 7.1.1 had UI issues and lagged a bit .
Ohhhhhhh shiiiiii
I just ordered my pure white today. I fianlly bit the bullet, was debating on it for a month. This is the cherry on top!!!
So far so good! Great job Essential! Only bad thing is Pokemon Go is back to show a horrible black bar at the top. Latest OTA allowed it to be fullscreen

I was on lineage. Flashed the factory image for NMJ32F then side loaded Oreo. Everything is running smoothly. No issues as yet.

WiFi calling doesn't work for me anymore (even after re-enabling it in settings).
It was working fine on 7.1.1.
Otherwise it feels faster (with occasional stuttering while scrolling)
Motion photos is enabled on the Oreo beta if you have the Google camera installed

My first opinion is that it is an improvement over the firmware the S7e came with, but is still missing simple features that the Note7 had built into the UI.

Agreed. I imagine those will be included in official since this has to replace the Note 7.
Honestly, I'm impressed for this to be a beta release. While not totally lag free, some areas are smoother on this beta than in the official MM firmware. Lots of new features

This UI is nicer than TW. It's like a true bargain between AOSP and Samsung in a lot of ways.

Its a completely new UI is the camera. It is similar to the Note 7, but it is different too. Its not the exact same. It does load WAY faster though and the shutter speed is super fast. Overall a great addition to the firmware.

Just found another new feature that is pretty awesome. You can adjust the DPI of the firmware in the developer settings. It is standard at 360, but I changed it to 450 (%25 increase) and now it looks WAY better. Nice feature for one of the things I use to always want root for.
Ok so first here is the screen shot of the adjusted dpi

Changelog
Speed up color/mono image fusion.
Fix 360 video saving.
General stability fixes.
Oh, cool. Those of you with the phone, be sure to test it thoroughly. The camera is the main thing keeping me from getting the phone.
Not super impressed. Maybe more speed stability improvements instead of quality. Here are two shots, no flash, same exact spot. One is with the Google camera and one is the Essential camera. See if you can guess which is which.
EDIT: Just to add that I'm at least happy to see updates coming. It's only been a week and we have another update. And I'm still eager to see what this NMI64C build is that I keep seeing reference to.
Update didn't do much
Fix your shutter Lag and Post Processing Software already!!
It's a step in the right direction. Definitely improved the stability and processing time but not enough for me to switch back from the gcam
Edit: also noticed non HDR pictures seem to be coming out better using the stock app vs gcam (stock left, gcam right)

It's faster and easier to push a single app update thru G play than a OTA file. OTA files are always released in stages some might get it tonight and the rest another day- gplay everyone get's it within hours.
So last night I had to reinstall one of my H918s. I usually just debloat / customize my own ROM, but I have started using Alpha ROM by @i95swervin. Even then, I have a zip that I flash that makes some tweaks that I like, and that saves me time.
Well I was in a hurry, and didn't have quick access to my zip, so I used the phone with a "stock" Alpha ROM.
Wow .. talk about sluggish. I can see why some people have complained.
This morning I decided to try and figure out why, and noticed that logd was enabled. When you root and debloat, you get a massive amount of errors that are logged. If you run adb logcat you will see the massive stream that starts scrolling down your screen.
Unfortunately, disabling logd causes SafetyNet to fail.
For me the performance is worth it. If you don't care about it, you can disable logd by:
* Boot to TWRP
* Mount system
* Use file manager to navigate to /system/bin
* Rename logd to logd.bak
There is a "proper" way to disable it by changing init scripts, but this is by far the easiest.
If you need to pass SafetyNet, or if you need logging again, just rename it back.
-- Brian
Good tip. You may also have noticed my follow up post in the "Is it still worth buying this phone in 2018" thread. In my case, I discovered that a good part of the sluggishness I had reported was being caused by Magisk in i95swervin's ROM. Once I got rid of it, the ROM immediately started to perform so much better. Between disabling logd, removing Magisk and turning Window, Transition and Animator scales to "off", the phone finally feels premium again.
I don't experience any of this on pure stock ROM.
Sent from my LG-H918 using XDA Labs
@BROKEN1981 If you are talking about a stock non-rooted ROM, the logging isn't an issue. Even a stock ROM that is rooted and not debloated doesn't have the issue if you disable rctd. This becomes an issue when you start debloating a lot of crap.

Ahh ok. Only things I deleted out of system was Lookout and a few Google apps. That's probably why I never noticed anything. Also have RCTD disabled.
Right now I'm looking into deleting a few LG apps like LG bridge, switch, account and backup.
Thanks for the heads up on the logd file. I might end up having to rename like you suggested.
Sent from my LG-H918 using XDA Labs
The quick and dirty way to tell if you might be getting performance issues is to run adb logcat while the phone is booted into the OS.
If you are getting a few log entries every couple of seconds, or even a couple of log entries every second, then no, it isn't really going to help.
However, if you are getting pages of log entries every second (as in scrolling by so fast you can't read it), then yea, it is killing your NAND performance -- not to mention killing your NAND since they only have so many read / write cycles.
-- Brian
Anyway to do this without causing issues with SafetyNet? I have a couple of apps I like to use and google pay.
I am researching that now. It looks like older versions of Magisk will work without logd, but I don't have time to test right now.

Ok Thank you. Please keep us up to date.
Will it increase Also battery life?
IF it is writing a lot of logs, yes. Just disabling it if you aren't getting a stream of logs isn't going to do anything.
-- Brian
I totally understand. I hope you didn't think I was given ya sh*t
You may want to consider adding it as an option explaining that (for now) SafetyNet will be broken if they disable it.

i was thinking while reading the thread, if you move the file from /system/bin/ to sdcard/documents.,, that wouldn't trip safety net would it? your technically not your touching(modding) your system .. sorta speak.
Was there any progress with magisk and getting safety net working with this disabled?

I was able to seemingly get it to pass SafetyNet by replacing the logd binary with an empty file via a Magisk module. The issue is if you enable MagiskHide with logd disabled it kills performance. Because of this Magisk auto disables MagiskHide on startup if it detects logd is missing.
So it's actually possible that SafetyNet would pass even if you just delete the file normally and re enable MagiskHide, I haven't tested that, but again not recommended because of the performance issue.

Im Running RR6.1 on my H918ARB1 and it is so smooth comparaed to stock roms that going back feels like installing a beta. There is something definitely wrong with LG. I just leaved RR on it. I have a Gcam that works and the battery is surprisingly very good. There is still no wifi calling or Volte but those are compromises im willing to live with for the sake of better performace and battery life. And best of all is That I have not experienced any throttle when hot. when lineage goes official and RR follows it is better to be AOSP.

That is exactly the point, Some missing features yes, but we are talking 8.1 vs. 7.0 WITHOUT Support from lg. No thermal throttling and smoothness and speed. Heck yes I'm a fan of that.

There wasn't any reference to race in my post, my phone is super fast and smooth on stock as well and all the v20 features work flawlessly where as on Los stuff doesn't work and you have to jump through hoops, dl additional apps to get basic functionality. But I digress this isn't a los thread, and your post was off topic to begin with.

Hi everyone,
Another heads up with respect to a Mi A1 project -- one which will be of special interest to the webOS refugees among us.
The LuneOS project has just announced that the Mi A1 is their new target device. You can read all about it over at PivotCE: https://pivotce.com/2018/11/28/luneos-november-stable-release-doppio/
The LuneOS project is an effort to create an open-source webOS distribution for smartphones (and possibly other devices). It has recently received a major helping hand from LG, which has open sourced a lot of new webOS code developed for their smart TVs. That being said, LuneOS is not suitable for everyday use. There's a lot left to do and the project is run entirely by a group of volunteers who don't do timelines. So don't ask them when it will be ready!
What I really love about this decision is that they were looking for an inexpensive development device to replace the Nexus 4. That's exactly why I bought my Mi A1 -- and I think it's shaping up to be next in the line of great development targets, like the HTC HD2 and the Nexus 4. I couldn't be happier about that.
Yep, very interesting os

Bad? It's a project in development. As I mentioned, it's not suitable for everyday use and there's still a lot to do.
But the RIL and calling not working is a regression. Both used to work on the Nexus 4. The regression is likely the result of adopting a new device and the recent work to integrate with the Halium project. That's just me speculating, though.
Thanks for providing the test results. I'm looking forward to giving it a go and seeing what does and doesn't work at this point (and which of the old webOS apps I can install, etc.).

Which stock ROM (7.1.2, there are quite a few) do I have to flash, and where can I obtain a working TWRP bootable with this stock rom?
I'm somehow not able to boot suggested TWRP image with latest 7.1.2 stock rom, maybe you could provide some links?
By the way: Is latest stable update >>stable<< enough to make phone calls and access LTE internet already?

Impressions so far:
- scrolling is noticably smoother, whether it's web pages or news content on the glauncher.
- battery seems to be better than Pie. The standby is definitely better, but I should note that I used a battery recalibration app right after updating (for the first time).
- the device seems to stay cooler under normal load. For whatever reason, it got hot doing some basic things in Pie and the battery life drained quickly.
- no bugs so far, all of my apps still work from what I can tell. Surprisingly stable for a first preview.

Where is the system wide dark theme?
Enable: adb shell settings put secure ui_night_mode 2
Disable: adb shell settings put secure ui_night_mode 1
For now toggle is missing
May be 3 for gray ?
Dark mode is not worth yet. Cant use Google photos. And maybe few other apps which are not discovered yet .
Try battery saver dark mode and check if you can live with google photos (side menu, etc)
If you can then go for it.
Otherwise not even a single crash yet on android Q beta q. Its a good experience so far.

No not your device..., It freezes sometimes like once in a day but see its just a beta 1 i tend to ignore that 1 time a day thing.
And if you think its too buggy then try a clean flash or formatting your device once. It helps.
