Noticed someone mention it about the pixel 2xl, but anyone else experiencing issues with the regular Pixel 2 fingerprint scanner? Randomly having to sign in using my password because the fingerprint scanner isn't working. Last phone was the Nexus 5x and never had issues like this unless my fingers were wet. Tried registering my fingers, but to no avail... Google told me that unless I hard reset my phone they can't exchange it, but any time I hard reset my phone, regardless how backed up it is, something gets lost.
I will say I have not had issues with the scanner. The accuracy is better than the original Pixel.
Sorry to report, no scanner problems here.

My guess is the phone is rebooting without you knowing about it. Anytime you reboot your phone your password, pin or pattern is required before the fingerprint scanner will unlock it. It sounds like this is what's happening.
That's what I was going to suggest. It's easy to confirm: the PIN screen should tell you that you need to re-enter the PIN after a reboot.
I've found the scanner itself to be flawless.
No issues hear thing is so friggin fast I use it more then acculy unlocking my phone with the power button. Only time I have to pin is on reboot and after 4 hour of inactivity in a smart lock location.
I do, yes, but what I think it happening is that the sensor is being triggered while in my pocket and it's hitting a failed attempts threshold which requires the pin. It happens more often if I'm sweaty.
My biggest gripe with the fingerprint scanner is the fact that it seems physically smaller than the OG pixel (I don't still have it to compare). But the software still has the same maximum number of fingers. Therefore it is NOT as good as the OG pixel at doing a full finger profile, and it has shown in my use.
Fast as **** though
I've noticed the finger print scanner tends to struggle with my finger after doing the dishes or washing hands. This is on a Pixel 2

So just now my fingerprint scanner stopped working.
It was fine an hour ago and now it won't recognize my finger. I have to unlock it with the passcode.
I've tried adding a new finger and when it asks to press my finger down, I do so and will lift it off to put it on again but it will say lift your finger for like 4 - 5 seconds as if it doesn't realize I took my finger off until 4 - 5 seconds later.
I've done a reboot a few times and same thing. I really don't want to do a hard reset but might be my next step.
Anyone else experiencing this? Or have suggestions?

Mine just started doing this tonight. I have no idea what's causing it, but I really don't wanna do a hard reset.
It's the weirdest thing, and really bothering me since it's a security feature.....
I'm still holding off for now but if I can fix it by the end of tonight I will do a hard reset.
If THAT doesn't work I'll be marching right into Tmobile tomorrow first thing and won't be leaving without a brand new phone!
Did a factory reset.
I was able to add a new fingerprint but there is now a huge delay before unlocking the phone.
F**king pissing me off. $600+ phone giving me crap like this.
Replacing tomorrow
Can't add another fingerprint now. I get this error, can anyone point me in the right dorection?
Galaxy s6 fingerprint not working
After initial set up of my Galaxy S6 my fingerprint worked briefly then failed to match since. Deleted the fingerprint and added three different fingers prints and still no resolve. I returned the first phone to T Mobile and they exchanged for a second device. Exactly the same issue. Since the phone is so new, not alot of posts are made addressing this issue. Will be calling Samsung next. If anyone has a fix, please post.
Damn sorry to hear. Tmobile overnighting a new one today. Hopefully my new one doesn't have this issue, I'm ALMOST tempted to return completely if this is going to be a issue. This is BS
Same issue with mine!!
I'm returning this phone now
Funny thing mine was having the same issue and it's starting to work again. Still slow but will unlock, not sure what is going on
Which version are you using? As I know, there was an update on Friday lastweek.

Hey a friend just told me he got the same problem
just that he doesnt remmber the pin code
any idea what to do?
I have started to develop this issue since today morning. I have the latest update from Samsung too. It works once in a while but this is not good enough. Not sure whether to return the phone over this.
UPDATE - I deleted the existing finger prints and then redone them again. It works but only at a certain angle and not as efficiently as it was the last couple of days.

I had the same issue. After tinkering around for a bit, the scanner seems to function fine when power saving mode is turned off. YMMV.
Mine is doing the same thing. I don't think this is a hardware issue though so you probably won't see much difference with getting a new phone or a hard reset even. At this point it's wait until a patch / new firmware is released that resolves the issue or play around with the settings to if something is conflicting with the scanner process.
While I do not have the non recognition issue, it is definitely very slow to unlock. Sometimes takes a full 2-3 second to register and unlock. Can even scan the finger pull it off and will take a couple seconds to unlock, so it seems more of a processing/software issue.
Mine has now developed this issue as well. Was hit or miss for about a day, now it doesn't work at all. In fact, if I press the power botton and the lock screen comes on for a second or so and now unlocks itself. I've tried adding new fingerprints and messing around with the settings, but nothing seems to work. I noticed when looking at the list of fingerprints, one would periodically flash blue. I went in to add a new fingerprint and before I could even start, I noticed a fingerprint starting to register. So I sat and watched and sure enough, an entire fingerprint would go through and register without me placing a finger on the key. I tried cleaning the home key thinking it could be reading a dirty or left over print, but no such luck. Bad deal here. I love this phone, but whatever this issue is is complete garbage. It's almost like its registering its own prints...
Just curious. If you're having these issues is your phone rooted and or do you have apps frozen/removed. Thanks
I'm running pure stock...including TW
I was just under my 14 days so I went ahead and returned my s6 this morning. Sprint gave me a new unit that I haven't had time to test out, but hoping this issue isn't going to plague these devices. I'll update if there are further issues.
Same issue here. Really frustrating!
Ever since i got my T Mobile Galaxy S6 Delivered a couple of days ago, the finger print scanner does not work.
It keep displaying the message :
"Make sure that the home key is clean and dry, then try again"
Here is a video of the problem: https://vid.me/aHjp
I bought the phone on Swappa, and the seller claims it never got wet.
I've tried searching for similar issues but have no found anything like it... any thoughts?
I just did a hard reset and still the same issue.
Anyone with any insight please?
Make sure there isn't a protective strip on the button. Peel it off. Had one like that, felt the fool...
It's probably on the way to not working. Mine said that a few times and now always gives me the fingerprint sensor error message.
Hard reset hasn't fixed it.
It's a common issue. Happened to me as well, now it's not working

I would. I switched to an iphone 6s+ and i'm sending my S6 to Samsung for work. The fingerprint sensor stopped working and it has a serious hardware issue with the wifi. I only hope they don't blame their **** product's problems on the crack in the back glass.
So my fingerprint scanner started working ...out of no where.
I ran the test under #*0#*
And it says failed... but it works. For now
Weird
it happened again
tip : when I put my finger on home screen , the message vanishes as it read my fingerprint
it's a software issue after updating my fw
now what?
Samsung galaxy note 5 fingerprint scanner not working after factory reset
I also got the same issue. Everything was working fine and i factory reset the phone to clear storage space. After the reset when i tried to set my fingerprint the scanner stopped working and started giving the same dry and clean message. I have realized that the phone doesn't even tries to read the fingerprint and anyways gives the clean and dry message even if i don't touch my finger on the sensor. I think that Samsung is doing this on purpose. I think that we all should get together in this forum and we should try to contact Samsung about this issue. The have to do something about. Thanks

Well .. finally the issue just got resolved by just replacing the home button at a local repair shop which cost me arround 7$
A few weeks after I got my Pixel I started experiencing random screen locks while I'm holding and using the phone.
I have it set to Auto lock after 1 minute of activity but this can happen sometimes immediately after unlocking with the finger print scanner. Ive only noticed it happening while on my hour train commute but that could just be because that's where I'm using it the most consistently.
I talked to Google support via chat and they suggested booting into safe mode to see if it's a third party app causing the issue. Ive currently been using safe mode for an hour and it has happened but only once when it first rebooted.
Has anyone else experienced this? I've contacted Google support again and will update if they find anything.
Thanks
I have experienced this several times. I can't pinpoint what's causing it. I'm just glad someone else is seeing this happen as well. Hopefully someone gets to the bottom of it.
I use an app "Always On" which has a "timeout" feature.
The app uses AMOLED ambient display to put a clock and notifications on the screen.
I use it when going to bed or at night. The timeout feature uses Device Administrator access and causes the screen to go fully off after a while. Sometimes the app causes the Devices Administrator requires password "error," definitely.
I will test more and report, but earlier in week I noticed screen go off as you describe, as I've noticed now and again too, and I realized it was maybe exactly 3 hours since I freshly set a 3 hr timeout in Always On. At that point I was using my phone when the device locked.
Hmm.

OMG you just blew my mind. This is definitely what it is. When I'm sitting on the train I have my satchel on my lap which has magnetic clasps. I'll remember to keep it away from there in future. THANK YOU SO MUCH! :good:
I know this is an old thready but this blew my mind too! I think my juul is causing it, as it has a magnet on the end to snap to the charger. Never would've put two and two together. Thank you!
P4xl - Same random screen locking symptoms, NOT MAGNET related.
All of the responses in this describe the symptoms of the problem I have with my Pixel4xl, but not the description of the cause.
I most DEFINITELY do not have any magnets within any proximity to my phone.
It only has an Otterbox case, and will often lock when being actively used, while behind held at least 6" from any other object (except my hands).
Is anyone else experiencing this (non-magnet related issue)?

Yes I have the same issue where the phone locks itself randomly on 4XL. No idea what's going on I have a fabric case... Very annoying it happens all the time
I also have the same issue on the Pixel 4. No case, I'm sitting on my couch, no magnet within 6 feet, no electronics other than a remote control, yet my phone just sometimes locks.
Yes I'm facing this issue on my Pixel 2 as well, and no magnets near me!! Can someone Please help?
Hey guys make sure your buttons arent stuck to the frame
It's happening to me too on my pixel 4 xl. Did anyone determine a cause?
Same issue, no case on it or any magnet nearby. It's super annoying.
I had the same issue on my Pixel XL. Didn't think twice about it since it was an older phone, probably a bug with new os/old phone. But i just upgraded to the Pixel 4a and the same thing is happening! Is it related to smart unlock? The weather? Mars in retrograde?

Definitely not the cause for me.
In my Otterbox case, when pressed, the volume buttons cause the volume interface to appear (which isn't happening),
and the power button has a distinct click when pressed (and when held, activates the nfc card payment interface).
A good guess, but unfortunately isn't the cause, in my situation. ??
I am wondering if anybody else has been annoyed by this:
On Samsung Galaxy S7 edge one had to first press a HW btton (home or power) and only then able to unlock using the fingerprint scanner.
On the S8 this is not so. Touching even for a moment the fingerprint scanner instantly unlocks the device!
I noticed that when the phone is in my pocket I would touch the fingerprint scanner inadvertently causing the phone to unlock.
If we look at the iris scanner:
One has to first press a HW button and then utilize this unlock option. But for fingerprint unlock, no...
I think this fingerprint scanner unlock procedure is solved immaturely by Samsung and would like to see if more agree.
Or am i missing an option somewhere? Comments/advises are welcome.
I prefer it that way, although I find it's in such a bad location that it isn't useable.
Hell no, the entire point is that it unlocks instantly. people dont want to be pressing other buttons first, taking extra time and effort dozens of times a day to unlock it. i cant see many people unlocking the thing by mistake by having their hand in their pocket!! It's hard enough to hit the sensor properly even when TRYING to! The fact it unlocks instantly is fantastic, i was impressed by how fast it is (when I manage to hit the scanner properly).

That's the thing. It's fast, really instant.. That's why a momentous touch in the pocket is quite possible to unlock the phone.
I understand why you like it. And agree is useful.
And may be if there was an option to choose instant unlock OR unlock following a screen on first (by a HW button) would have been nice.
Yeah they could add an option for that but i doubt enough people would want it for them to do it
I prefer it like this and the placement isn't bad at all either.

I was only able to unlock with fingerprint about 50% of the time.
I found out that after using a double tap gesture in Nova launcher to lock the screen, it required my pin to unlock. I disabled that gesture and now the fingerprint unlock works almost as well as it did on my Nexus 6P.

All phones with fingerprint sensors on the back will instantly unlock when you put your finger on the sensor. That is the whole point, to quickly and securely be able to log into your phone. For example the Nexus 5x/6p and Pixel phones all work this way. The Galaxy S6/S7 2-step method of pressing the home button and then waiting for the fingerprint to read was a somewhat wonky way of doing things that Samsung is moving on from.
I'm not sure what you mean by "I noticed that when the phone is in my pocket I would touch the fingerprint scanner inadvertently causing the phone to unlock." The phone will not unlock in your pocket with just any incidental touch on the fingerprint sensor. It has to be a registered fingerprint and your finger has to be placed squarely on the sensor. So unless every time you reach down into your pocket you are pressing your finger perfectly centered on the sensor, I find it hard to believe your phone is unlocking due to the fingerprint reader. There is an option called "Keep screen turned off" in Display settings. With this setting enabled, if the phone's proximity sensor recognizes it's in a bag or pocket, the screen will turn itself off after 5 seconds if the power or home button is accidentally pressed, so perhaps you should enable that.

I love this "feature" but yes you're right, it happened to me gazillion time to accidentally unlock the phone in my pocket. My "fix" to this issue is to have the back of the phone facing against my hand - problem solved, I can't touch the sensor that way.
Enjoy your new phone!
The fingerprint scanner works the way it's supposed to. Go buy another phone that has a real scanner & correctly placed (Like the nexus 6p) and test that, then come back.
OP is used to the crap samsung has pulled for many years, front bottom ugly enormous button acting as a scanner. Just look what they've done with the S8/+, Without the button, it's insanely beautiful. I've only owned a samsung within my work, i'd personally NEVER buy one. But the S8+ changed my mind. The position of the scanner isnt even a big problem. Although i'd like to see it in the middle like the 6p and all other correctly placed scanners. But i've got no problems reaching it.
I find the sensor on the S8+ to work very well. I had given up using the one on my Note7, since it failed to identify my fingerprint half the time. But on the S8+ it's much more accurate. And I like that it turns on and unlocks the phone with just a touch (like the Nexus 6P I had before).
I'm even getting used to the placement. Particularly with a case on the phone, the cutout of which helps identify the location by feel, it doesn't seem like a problem anymore.
Works great for me.
Phone is lock in pocket. Pull it out and put finger on sensor and it unlock to home screen..
Works as it should.
Iris scanner works like this if you pick the phone up from wireless charging.
It's really starting to grow on me, especially when Samsung Pay. I don't know how many times I pressed too hard on the Home /fingerprint sensor and ended up closing SP and starting over.

I had a S7 Edge Duos for a day and tried Nova for a short time. I set the double tap gesture and Nova told me about a workaround.
If I wanted it to unlock right away it would ask for a PIN everytime but if I let Nova set a black screen for 5 seconds and then lock itself it would unlock with the finger scanner.
Ontopic:
I totally love that the phone is unlocking this way now. I freaking hated that I had to press a button before the fingertip scanner would unlock the phone and it only lasted 24 hours with me.
Exactly the way I like it. Got used to it on my LG V20.

I hate it too!
I just bought a S9+ and I really hate this feature. I am CONSTANTLY accidentally unlocking my phone. The fingerprint scanner is fantastic in that I barely touch it and it unlocks. Perhaps I just need to delete all of my fingerprints except a pinkie or something weird, so maybe try that. At this point, I just had to turn off my fingerprints together because it was getting sooooo annoying, but I'll probably do the pinkie thing eventually because I loathe having to do a PIN.

I got massive fingers and constantly encounter this issue. Not everyone has fingers the size of rice puffs that accidental unlocks aren't an issue.
A bit of a strange issue. The fingerprint sensor has been working 100% without issue since getting the phone.
I let the kids use my phone for an hour to watch cartoons. After that it started not recognising my finger. I cleaned the glass, removed the case, re created the fingerprint profiles. I made a mistake and tried an OTA update, which then had to fully reset the phone, but that's another issue.
I am using a tempered glass protector. I took it off for 1 day to see if that made a difference and not really. Even being extremely careful after 1 day there were tiny scratches on the screen.
Wondering if anyone else has had an issue like this. I did reload it with the latest Miui 12 stable, but made no difference. Not sure if the kids were pressing it constantly, but no signs of damage.
It will vibrate and attempt to recognise my finger, but just fails. Then the next time it may work, but intermittent and really annoying.
I have found that it seems to work better when out of a case for some reason. Maybe the sides of the case resting on the glass.
Overall I think this is a great phone. Shame about no development happening. As I use it debloated with MicroG it means I can't do ota updates.
I'm considering getting a Galaxy, Oneplus or Pixel phone. Until the possibility of more development happens if ever
We've had ours for about 3-4 days now and I have found the FPS to be crap out-of-the-box. Exactly the same issues as you, and with just the default screen protector on it. Sometimes it works fine at first attempt, at other times I have no choice but to enter the PIN to unlock.
I made the mistake of letting my kids use the phone again a few days ago. After that the fingerprint sensor would sometimes not be detected. The phone randomly won't switch on and have to hold down power for about a minute then it turns on. Very annoying, but doesn't happen all the time. Did it almost all weekend, then today it's working almost fine.
Did test in TWRP and didn't have the same issue. So making me think it's either software or fingerprint sensor related, causing the issue.
Still think the phone is great and there's not really another phone on the market I'd prefer at the moment, just need some custom rom support. A work friend has a Note 8 and his will be 50% battery while this is still about 85% or so

I have the same issue since I got the phone, the fingerprint sensor is ****, I opted to unlock it via bluetooth by recognizing my smartwatch.
Hydrate or moisturize your fingers/thumbs
Much faster accuracy unlock speed
Try to Change the Glass Protector
Your using alcohol based hand sanitizer, these remove moisture from the hands making them dry. Just put some lotion you'll have much better response.
What game were your children playing on phone?
Have you looked at their fingers?
I don't like on screen fingerprint sensors. Maybe too much pressure leads to an issue.

Also, I remember to have activated the "show touches" option on developer settings. It was almost unable to recognise fingerprint. Deactivated again.
